In this concluding message of Matthew 13, Pastor Karl unpacks the final three parables of Jesus — the Hidden Treasure, the Pearl of Great Price, and the Net — and challenges the common interpretations most of us have grown up hearing.Rather than reading these parables through a modern American lens, Pastor Karl takes us back into a first-century Jewish mindset to uncover what Jesus was really communicating. The treasure hidden in the field isn't something we purchase with our devotion — it's a picture of Jesus himself, who in joy gave everything to redeem his chosen people. The pearl of great price wasn't a treasure to the Jews at all, which is exactly the point: Jesus was revealing the shocking mystery that Gentiles — the unclean, the outsiders — would be included in the kingdom of God. And the parable of the net reminds us that not all roads lead to heaven, and that a day of separation is coming.Pastor Karl also draws a striking connection to the book of Ruth, showing how Boaz purchasing the field to gain Ruth as his bride foreshadowed what Jesus would do for his people — buying the field to possess the treasure within it.The message closes with one of the hardest passages for any pastor to preach at his own church: Jesus returning to his hometown, only to be met with familiarity and low expectation. The takeaway is pointed — low expectation limits reception. The messenger can be overlooked, but the message cannot: God chose to treasure you, not because of anything you offered, but because of the price his Son was willing to pay.Watch all our sermons on our youtube channel "Flipside Christian Church"Join us in person 8:00am, 9:30am & 11:00am every Sunday morning.37193 Ave 12 #3h, Madera, CA 93636For more visit us at flipside.churchFor more podcasts visit flipsidepodcasts.transistor.fm

It happened. We finished. After walking through all the books of the New Testament—over many episodes, many conversations, and what felt like several church calendar years—Jonathan and Brandon finally wrap up the New Testament Survey series. In this final episode, we look back on what we've learned, how studying Scripture together has shaped our faith, and why taking time to carefully walk through God's Word is always worth it… even if it takes a little longer than originally planned. (Okay, a lot longer.)Expect reflection, encouragement, a few laughs, and some good-natured jokes about just how ambitious this series turned out to be. More than anything, this episode celebrates the faithfulness of God, the richness of His Word, and the joy of learning it together.Resources Jonathan's BookBrandon's Book
In Revelation: Part 2 of our New Testament Survey series, Jonathan and Brandon move from timelines and theories to the heart of the book—its theology, themes, and why Revelation still matters for Christians today. We explore what this powerful book teaches about worship, perseverance, faithfulness, suffering, and the ultimate victory of Christ. This episode reminds us that Revelation is about living faithfully in light of who Jesus is and what He has promised. We'll talk about why believers are called to read, understand, and apply this book in everyday life. And yes… somehow we even manage to connect the Olympics, Revelation, and Snoop Dogg—because apparently nothing is off-limits in this series. (You'll just have to listen to find out how that happened.)If you've ever wondered why Revelation matters beyond end-times discussions, this episode is for you—slightly sarcastic, deeply biblical, and surprisingly relevant.
Welcome to the book of Revelation… where opinions are strong, charts are plentiful, and nobody agrees on anything. Resource links at the bottom. In Part 1 of our Revelation discussion, Jonathan and Brandon lay the groundwork by walking through authorship, possible dates of writing, and then bravely stepping into the deep end of end-times interpretation. Yes, we cover all the major views—especially the different perspectives on the millennium—and yes, we probably left someone's favorite chart out. Don't miss part 2 next week though, which is more important as we will discuss the theological implications of the book.Along the way, both hosts share their own interpretive viewpoints, explain why they hold them, and do their best to be fair… while fully expecting to upset at least a few listeners in the process. If you have strong opinions about Revelation, rest assured: there is a very good chance you will feel personally challenged at least once. This episode is thoughtful, biblical, honest, and occasionally sarcastic—because sometimes that's the only way to talk about apocalyptic literature without losing your mind.Listen in for solid background, respectful debate, and a reminder that faithful Christians can disagree while still standing firmly on God's Word. Don't miss part 2 next week where we focus on the theological teachings of the book. 4 Views the Millennium Article4 Interpretations of Revelation ArticleRevelation Commentary Jonathan quoted from
It's only 25 verses… so naturally we talked about it for over 35 minutes. You're welcome. In this episode of our New Testament Survey series, we tackle the tiny-but-mighty book of Jude and somehow manage to stretch it into a full-length conversation. Along the way, we cover the date of the letter, dig into authorship (yes, which Jude wrote it), and talk through why those details actually matter. We also step into an important discussion about what the Bible teaches regarding Mary and Joseph having biological children, and how that fits with Jude's identity and the broader New Testament witness. If you've ever thought, “What could you possibly say that long about Jude?”—this episode is here to lovingly prove you wrong. It's packed with theology, history, a few rabbit trails, and plenty of good conversation as we continue learning our way through the New Testament together.
