Drag Time with Heklina is back! I'm on my way to Reykjavík for Pride but we spent some time with producer, actress, vocalist, musician, and author Calpernia Addams! We get into the weeds about how language can change, casual activism, and reflect on fighting and surviving the queer liberation. Calpernia shares some of her experiences growing up in a strict fundamentalist Christian cult and her journey coming to adulthood serving in the military as a combat medic in Saudi Arabia during the Gulf War. Then she tells us all about how Navy lesbians contributed to her post-service glow up! Calpernia gives us an insider perspective on Hollywood casting of transgender, gay, and lesbian roles and she tell us about the work of her production company Deep Stealth Productions with Andrea James. We ask her about the film Soldier's Girl (2003) which portrayed the 1999 hate crime murder of her real life boyfriend PFC Barry Winchell at Ft. Campbell, Kentucky, USA. We ask her all about her very fun and irreverent podcast with Alec Mapa and Rachel True called Nooner. The podcast is on a hiatus but you can still catch the gang dishing with some of Hollywood's most interesting people in all of the past episodes! But you will have to listen-in to this very sweet episode of Drag Time with Heklina to find out what's next from Calpernia Addams! This is Part 2 of a 2-part series on the murder of Barry Winchell. I highly recommend listening to Part 1 before continuing with this episode. In 1999, 21-year old Barry Winchell was a part of the 101st Airborne Division at Fort Campbell. In March, he began dating a transgender woman named Calpernia Addams. Although he met her at a gay club after Barry’s roommate, Justin Fisher, invited a group of friends to the club, Fisher began to taunt Barry about his sexuality. Fisher began a wicked rumor around the barracks that Barry was gay. This was a big deal, since someone discovered to be gay could be forced out of the military with a less than honorable service characterization. Barry tried to lay low, but the taunts continued. During the 4th of July weekend, the guys were BBQing in the barracks, when the youngest member of the unit, Calvin Glover, came outside and began slinging absurd tales about the crimes he committed back home. Barry told the young soldier to shut up and go to bed and this ignited a feud that would lead to Barry’s murder just 30 hours later at the hands of 18-year old Glover, but instigated by Barry’s roommate, 26-year old Fisher. Dig in with Margot as she discusses the conclusion of the murder of Barry Winchell, the ensuring trials, and the DADT policy. -----All sources for this episode can be found here. In 1999, 21-year old Barry Winchell was part of the 101st Airborne Division at Fort Campbell, Kentucky. He planned to make the military a career. Specifically, he wanted to go to Warrant Officer school and eventually become a helicopter pilot. In March 1999, he began dating Calpernia Addams, a transgender woman who was preoperative. To many, this is not a big deal, but to the military during the “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” era – it was a big deal. Barry’s roommate, Justin Fisher, began a campaign to get Barry kicked out of the military. But Barry was so evil, that he used a younger soldier as his weapon to destroy Barry. A domestic thriller in the literal sense, BAD RONALD answers the question, "What if Dorothy Zbornak's son were a murderer?" This 1974 ABC TV movie stars Scott Jacoby as a teenaged killer lurking within the walls of an unwitting family's home. It's got some issues, as Sam and guest Calpernia Addams find, but it also has enough potential that we should all want to see the 1992 French remake. Here is what is said about Andrea on the Deep Stealth Website… “Andrea James has spent her career crafting communication that makes a difference, and now she’s applying her expertise in Hollywood. After graduating with a Master’s Degree in English from University of Chicago, she wrote ads for ten years at top Chicago agencies. Her ads for blue-chip clients premiered on the Super Bowl and other major television events and were frequently among audience favorites. She has also created free websites for consumers considered among the best in their categories. Having established a loyal following on the internet, Andrea branched out to film and television with her business partner Calpernia Addams. In 2003, they created Deep Stealth Productions, with the goal to counter the dismal depiction of transgendered people in the media with more accurate and positive portrayals. Andrea produced Deep Stealth’s sold-out V-Day LA 2004 benefit production of “The Vagina Monologues,” under the direct guidance of playwright Eve Ensler and mentor Jane Fonda. The event was featured in the documentary Beautiful Daughters. Andrea has made numerous film and television appearances, including The Big Idea with Donny Deutsch, the sitcom Two and a Half Men, The Insider with Pat O’Brien, and the documentary Middle Sexes. Andrea stars in the popular instructional video Finding Your Female Voice, and her work as a voice coach for trans women led to consulting with star Felicity Huffman for the feature film Transamerica. Andrea consulted on the script with Felicity and appears in the opening scene of that film as the voice coach. Andrea directed the 2007 short “Casting Pearls” and and the 2009 film Transproofed.” More information and links can be found on Andrea’s Page on www.prismdirection.com .
