He earned a Master of Dental Sciences in Pediatric Dentistry from the University of Connecticut, a Master of Science in Dentistry in Orthodontics from the University of Washington, and a PhD from the Peruvian University Cayetano Heredia. Dr. Castillo is a Professor in the Department of Stomatology for Children and Adolescents at the Peruvian University Cayetano Heredia and serves as an Affiliate Assistant Professor in the Department of Oral Health Sciences at the University of Washington. He is a Diplomate of both the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry and the American Board of Orthodontics. A past President of the International Association of Pediatric Dentistry (2013–2015; 2021–2023), Dr. Castillo currently serves on the Executive Committee of the World Federation of Orthodontists (2025–2030).
