Dennis is joined via Zoom by Argentine-born filmmaker Tomás Gómez Bustillo to talk about his delightful, three-time Indie Spirit Award-nominated film Chronicles of a Wandering Saint, which was first mentioned on this podcast earlier this year when Drew Droege raved about it during our year-end movie wrap-up. The movie is about an elderly woman in a small rural town in Argentina named Rita (Wild Tales Monica Villas) who is so competitive with the other ladies from her church that she fakes a miracle to try and improve her status. Tomás talks about how the film was partly inspired by the time he spent as a young Catholic missionary in towns just like Rita's. He also talks--cryptically--about the giant swerve the movie takes halfway through and how many people he shared the script with told him he could never pull it off. He also recalls getting rejected by Sundance and another major festival and actually having a ritual where he let it go. He burned a piece of paper with the film's name on it, thanked the film for all it had brought to his life and accepted that it wasn't going to be a festival movie...and then days later, he got accepted by South By Southwest, where the film was a breakout hit. Other topics include: graduating college with a degree in Political Science in Argentina and then leaving that path behind to study film at AFI in Los Angeles, his love for magical realism, how his pursuit of music led to him discovering filmmaking, why The Lion King f-ed him up as a kid and the movie costume he wish he owned so he could wear it around the house. www.chroniclesofawanderingsaint.com

STEWART WADE From a young age, Stewart Wade knew he wanted to tell stories. He performed skits in the backyard for his captive parents and friends, and attempted his first novel at age ten.  A bit later, Stewart tried his hand at poetry, short stories, and playwriting, ultimately getting a Master's degree in Theater, Film and Television from UCLA.    After a few years in the Hollywood trenches, Stewart wrote and directed his first feature film, Coffee Date, starring Wilson Cruz, Jonathan Silverman,  Sally Kirkland, Elaine Hendrix, Jason Stuart, and Debbie Gibson. The movie garnered numerous awards and received a limited theatrical release, ultimately playing in rotation for a year on MTV's LOGO channel. His next movie, Tru Loved, starred Najarra Townsend and Jake Abel, and featured Jasmine Guy, Alexandra Paul, Alec Mapa, Cynda Williams, Bruce Vilanch, Nichelle Nichols, Vernon Wells -- and Jane Lynch. It also won several awards before playing in rotation on Here!TV for many years.   Next up, Stewart directed and co-produced Such Good People, a screwball comedy written by David Michael Barrett and starring Michael Urie, Randy Harrison, and James Urbaniak, with supporting roles by Scott Wolf, Ana Ortiz, Lance Bass, Alec Mapa, Tom Lenk, Drew Droege, and Rick Overton.   At about this same time, Stewart created Coffee House Chronicles.  This web series is an ongoing passion, as each episode is self-contained and can be produced when time and money allow. Most recently, Stewart has written and directed his first drama, Say Yes, and now the sequel, Baby Steps. "I look into my future and all I see is a long, dark hallway... and no exits." We watched Polyester (1981) with the hilarious Drew Droege and we're ready to eat an entire cake in one sitting. The legendary John Waters takes us on a melodramatic trip through the suburbs by way of the famous "Women's Pictures" directed by Douglas Sirk.  We take a peek behind the velvet curtains and French Provincial decor of the 'burbs with Divine, who gives a stellar performance as Francine Fishpaw, the put upon wife of a filandering pornographer, mother of juvenile delinquents and daughter of a social climbing snob. Francine's oversensitive nose plays a key role in her already fragile mental state and the gimmick of Odorama was developed for the original screenings. Where else but a John Waters picture could you get a scratch-and-sniff card with such fragrances as Roses, Flatulence, Gasoline and New car smell? Polyester may have been Waters' first foray into "mainstream cinema" but all his usuals are there; Mink Stole as the sass-mouth other woman, Edith Massey as Francine's nouveau riche former housekeeper, and Jean Hill as a tire biting gospel singer. We can't forget the absolute dreamboat Tab Hunter as sleazy lothario Todd Tomorrow. Polyester is as tacky as late '70s/early '80s houshold decor and we can't get enough of it. Watch out!  It's the Baltimore Footstomper!!
