Delta Force operator Wade Ishimoto was one of the founding members of the elite unit when it was first formed. The story of his progression from an American of Japanese ancestry born in Hawaii just prior to the attack on Pearl Harbor to the Delta Force is told in his book “The Intoku Code”.  Intoku is a Japanese word that means “doing good in secret.” Wade began his Army career as a military policeman and then moved on to counter intelligence and human intelligence. Fourteen of his twenty years in the Army were spent in Special Forces.  He originally wanted to join the Marines, but the recruiter was at lunch. On his way to see the Air Force recruiter, he says the Army recruiter tapped him on the shoulder and “fed him a bunch of lies”. Wade was laser focused on getting into the Special Forces but the path was not an easy one. Eventually he joined the 5th Special Forces group because of a personal recommendation from a Warrant Officer. Terrorism was becoming more common in the 1970's and the US Government realized it did not have the capacity to conduct surgical hostage rescue missions. At the time, Charlie Beckwith had been developing a plan for a unit based upon the British SAS that became the basis for Delta Force. Wade had worked for Beckwith before and wrote him a letter describing how Special Forces could be improved. It obviously made an impression because Beckwith asked him to come on board with Delta Force. The Intoku Code describes numerous challenges involved with standing up Delta Force, including keeping itself secret from other military and government units and some of their training methods. Wade says another challenge was recruiting the “best of the best” from other branches because the commanders didn't want to give up their best personnel. Wade's book provides fascinating insights into the planning of the ill-fated “Operation Eagle Claw”, the mission to rescue hostages being held in Iran.  He was nearly left behind when that mission was aborted. TAKEWAY: Wade's hope is that he will inspire others to do good things in secret. “Be steadfast, be resolute and continue to care for others.”

Send us a textEpisode 166Hugh Thompson Jr. was born in Atlanta, Georgia, in 1943. He grew up with a strong sense of right and wrong, nurtured by his upbringing in a small Southern town. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy and then the Army, eventually becoming a helicopter pilot with the rank of Warrant Officer. By 1968, Thompson was stationed in Vietnam, flying reconnaissance missions and transporting wounded soldiers from the battlefield. Now, let's fast forward to March 16, 1968—the day of the My Lai Massacre. Thompson's mission that day was to provide air support for a ground assault in the village of My Lai. As he circled above, Thompson began to notice disturbing scenes below: bodies of unarmed villagers lying in ditches, huts on fire, and soldiers firing indiscriminately into crowds of civilians. He quickly realized this wasn't a battle against Viet Cong forces; it was a massacre.Horrified by what he was witnessing, Thompson made the unprecedented decision to intervene, even if it meant going against his fellow soldiers. He ordered his helicopter crew to land between the American troops and the remaining villagers. In an extraordinary act of bravery, he then got out and confronted the platoon, which was led by Lieutenant William Calley, the officer directly responsible for the massacre. Thompson demanded they stop the killing immediately.Risking his own life and career, Thompson instructed his crew to cover him with their weapons as he approached the villagers. He also radioed for backup to evacuate the surviving Vietnamese civilians. Thanks to his actions, around 11 villagers were saved from imminent death.Following the massacre, Thompson was vocal about what he'd seen and reported it to his superiors. But instead of receiving commendation, he faced a harsh backlash. Military officials tried to downplay the massacre, and for years, Thompson's reputation suffered. He was criticized, ostracized, and, at one point, even received death threats.Despite the challenges, Thompson never backed down from telling the truth. Years later, after investigations brought the horrors of My Lai to public attention, the U.S. government recognized Thompson's actions as heroic. In 1998, three decades after the massacre, he was awarded the Soldier's Medal, the highest honor for bravery not involving direct enemy action.Thompson's story is one of incredible moral courage. He was a man willing to stand against his own comrades in defense of what was right, even in the face of immense pressure. By risking his life and career, Thompson saved others and bore witness to an atrocity the world needed to know about. He later said that what he did wasn't brave—it was just the right thing to do.Hugh Thompson Jr. reminds us that even in war, humanity and justice should never be abandoned. His life serves as a powerful example of moral integrity, proving that one person's courage can make a difference, even in the bleakest of times. Summary   In this episode of the Rising Tide Leadership Podcast, host Mo interviews his friend Dave, a retired Chief Warrant Officer from the United States Army. They reminisce about their time in the Army and discuss the role of a Chief Warrant Officer. Dave shares his journey from enlisting in the Army Reserves to becoming a Warrant Officer specializing in food service. He explains the unique position of Warrant Officers as specialists in their chosen fields, advising commanders and keeping them out of trouble. Dave also shares a funny story about a deployment where soldiers were fed nothing but chili dogs for several meals.    Overall, the conversation provides insights into the life and responsibilities of a Chief Warrant Officer in the Army. David Morphis shares his experiences working as a logistics officer in Northern Iraq and the challenges of being away from his family during his wife's labor. He emphasizes the importance of finding value in everyone and learning from their experiences. He also discusses the influence of his father and wife in shaping him as a person of influence.    David recommends the books '12 Rules for Life: An Antidote to Chaos' by Jordan Peterson and 'David Copperfield' by Charles Dickens. He encourages listeners to strive to be better and uplift those around them.   Takeaways   A Chief Warrant Officer in the Army is to be a specialist in a chosen field and advise commanders. Warrant Officers manage specific areas, such as food service, and ensure the commander's decisions align with regulations and best practices. Army deployments can last for extended periods, with soldiers spending months in a foreign country before returning to the United States. The Army Reserves have a different mobilization process than the active duty Army, with reservists going to a mobilization site before deployment. Deployments can involve challenging and dangerous situations, but soldiers find ways to cope and maintain communication with their families. Humor and camaraderie play a significant role in soldiers' experiences, even in difficult situations like being fed only chili dogs for multiple meals. Find value in everyone and learn from their experiences. The influence of family members, such as fathers and spouses, can shape a person's character. Read books like '12 Rules for Life: An Antidote to Chaos' and 'David Copperfield' to gain wisdom and inspiration. Strive to be better and uplift those around you.   Sound Bites   "An entire training organization of 2,000-3,000 soldiers was fed only chili dogs for about four meals." "It was the best deployment I ever had, mainly because of those four months working with the special forces." "We all have those staples of influence and shifting influences." "You can overcome just about all obstacles. You just have to stick with something." "There's a lot of wisdom in organizing yourself before you try to organize others." ------------------------------------ Books Mentioned in the Show 12 Rules for Life: An Antidote to Chaos, by Jordan Peterson David Copperfield, by Charles Dickens ------------------------------------------ Special Thanks To: Work it out by LiQWYD https://soundcloud.com/liqwyd Creative Commons — Attribution 3.0 Unported — CC BY 3.0 Free Download / Stream: https://bit.ly/l_work-it-out Music promoted by Audio Library https://youtu.be/erSmdVocHO0

Alan C. Mack joined the Army upon graduating High School. His desire to see the world as a US Army helicopter mechanic took him to the Republic of Korea, West Texas, and the Federal Republic of Germany before attending Warrant Officer flight school at Fort Rucker, Alabama. The nearly year-long flight school yielded a UH-1H, Huey, and CH-47D, Chinook, aircraft qualification before his first pilot assignment in Savannah, Georgia. He arrived in time to progress with his new unit as a copilot in Operation Desert Shield. Then, several months later, he flew combat missions in the lead aircraft penetrating deep into Iraq. Upon his return to the United States, he quickly achieved the status of Pilot-in-command and eventually assumed the coveted role of Night Vision Goggle Unit Trainer. The NVG UT position is a precursor to flying as an Instructor Pilot (IP). Another assignment to the Republic of Korea was in store for Alan before attending the CH-47 Instructor Pilot course at Fort Rucker, Alabama. The call to adventure was persuasive, drawing Alan into the special operations community as an MH-47 pilot, where he served for nearly 17 years at the 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment (TF-160th). He carried in the Horse Soldiers in 2001, Navy SEAL Neil Roberts fell from his helicopter when he was shot down during Operation Anaconda, he was the overall flight lead for Operation Earned Respect (the recovery of fallen from Operation Redwings, and the rescue of Marcus Luttrel), among many other missions. CW5 Alan C. Mack is a Master Aviator with more than 6700 hours of flight time, of which over 3200 hours were flown with Night Vision Goggles. Alan C. Mack's awards include • Legion of Merit • 2 Distinguished Flying Crosses • 3 Bronze Star Medals • 3 Meritorious Service Medals • 10 Air Medals; one with Valor device, Combat Action Badge, and the Army Broken Wing award.
