Chris Creamer founded the website SportsLogos.net 25 years ago, and since then it's become an invaluable resource for fans of sports logos, uniforms, and branding news. Baseball By Design host Paul Caputo has been covering minor league baseball logos for Chris's site since 2014, and so it's only fitting that Chris is the guest on the debut episode of the podcast. The crew is back for Episode 5 talking about the big trade that sent Jack Eichel to the Golden Knights. How hard is to develop trust between a front office and the players and what are those relationships really like? Also, how long a leash should players give management? And the guys share stories from their careers about disgruntled players and the impacts it has on both teammates and the front office. And then, we're joined by sports uniform and logo expert Chris Creamer, who is the co-author of "Fabric of the Game," to have some fun talking about uniforms, logos and how certain teams got their names.
Chris Creamer launched his online museum of logos (Sportslogos.net) as a teenager -- now it's a full-time job that often puts him at the center of conversations around design in sports. His recent book, written with designer Todd Radom, "Fabric of the Game: The Stories Behind the NHL's Names, Logos, and Uniforms" reflects the deep love and historical knowledge he brings to his work. Hear him discuss the origins of his site, notable logo redesigns and his advice on finding the best logo for your business. Chris is a fourth generation artist whose work includes designing logos for the MLB and publishing numerous books on sports logos. Chris runs a website dedicated to the vocation, and his attention to detail and history has landed him gigs with the NHL as a consultant during their centennial season. You think combining forces and writing a book on the history of hockey via the teams and their jerseys would be a success? We learn how the book came about, how you can pick up a copy if you missed out originally, and pick their brain on the current state of the NHL's jerseys and logos. Which team's logo would Todd like to redesign? Why are hockey jerseys the best sports jerseys? Tune in to find out!

Logo archivist Chris Creamer (SportsLogos.net) and graphic brand designer Todd Radom (Todd Radom Design) join this week's show to dive into the rich and fascinating visual story of the National Hockey League's nearly 103-year history - as told by the names, logos and uniforms of its teams. Their new book collaboration Fabric of the Game: The Stories Behind the NHL's Names, Logos and Uniforms is a comprehensive look into the rationale behind and the execution of the iconography of each of the league's major historical franchise lineages - from the respective journeys of today's 32 teams to the forgotten former clubs of yore. Of course, we go long and hard into the visual foibles of the latter - who can forget the Cleveland Barons, Kansas City Scouts, Colorado Rockies, California/Oakland/Bay Area/California Golden Seals, the Atlanta Thrashers, or even the New York/Brooklyn Americans? But there are plenty of revealing tidbits and surprising twists for fans of today's NHL franchises - including directionless Stars, wayward Flames, cartoonish Ducks - and a hot debate on just where team histories should go when they pull up stakes for greener pastures.

On this episode, we have a crossover episode of sorts as I bring you the raw and uncut audio from a Q&A on SportsLogos.net I conducted with Brian Gundell of Brian Gundell Graphic Design Co. and Brandon Moore of the Miami Dolphins regarding their open branding freelance project for Baseball New Zealand. We discuss how the idea came about to publish a public log of process work for branding a sports organization like Baseball NZ, as well as chat about the challenges of working across 3 timezones, including one that is 18 hours ahead of Eastern Standard Time. We also chat about how the designers are compensating for the cultural knowledge and differences in having never been to New Zealand or being intimately familiar with NZ heritage. In addition, we discuss how the designers plan to veer from New Zealand's biggest sports brand, the All Blacks, in order to build a brand of its own for baseball. “The best designers are always problem-solvers...[our] job is to figure out how to make this [project] the best it can be.” On this week’s podcast, freelance sports designer Brian Gundell joined the show to discuss his career working in a few different limbs of the sports industry. "I know you say you (designers) are not curing cancer but you affect people. You affect people positively and negatively (with your work)." Our second Canadian guest comes aboard the podcast this week as Chris Creamer, Founder and Editor-in-Chief of SportsLogos.net joined the the show to tell the story of one of the most influential sports logo and uniform sites on the Internet. The site was started in 1999 when Chris was only 14 years old and has survived throughout his high school, college years, attacks from hackers and even the Web 2.0 era. Chris and I nerd out about being some of the older tech guys on the web in our 30s and mixing that with our love of both tech and sports. Chris tells a few stories about the growth of the website, its early rebellious nature, the infamous forums and the sites move from archiving sports logos to daily content and news. We also discuss breaking new logo stories and Chris has been able to develop relationships within the media and sports executive community to get first-hand access to new logo information. "By faling to prepare you are preparing to fail." – Benjamin Franklin Preparation is often overlooked in regards to success. But those that are the most successful, have definitely taken the time to prepare and develop processes over time to allow them to react instead of overthinking obstacles in their career. An example is Chris Fowler, former College Gameday host of 25 years. Chris works hard to prepare developing notes, storylines and more, all while leading his comrades as QB of Gameday. On this episode, I discuss the importance of preparation and give you some tips on how to learn from the masters in regards to it.
