We also analyze fun example videos along the way!

In this episode I discuss the importance of including an ISRC (International Standard Recording Code) when including a previously released song in a new release. The example I share is the new single 'Big Blue Sky' which is a collaboration between Date Night (my group) and Chris Robley. On this release we included a second song 'True North' which was previously released. On release day there was over had 1 million streams in Spotify for Artists because of the existing streams that 'True North' had already were merged. This shows the power of an ISRC and why artists should consider releasing EP's, Compilations and Albums to include previously released songs and give them another chance to be heard. datenightmusic.com chrisrobley.com workhardplaylisthard.com

The foundations of music marketing stay pretty solid: capture attention, offer value, lead listeners on a journey from awareness to action. But the house you build on that foundation is always shifting. What older marketing strategies still work for musicians in 2019? What are the new tools to tell your story? How do the shifting expectations of your audience alter your approach? In this LIVE taping of the DIY Musician Podcast, CD Baby's Kevin Breuner and Chris Robley will discuss what effective music marketing looks like today — and tomorrow.

Article: http://diymusician.cdbaby.com/music-distribution/biggest-myths-music-streaming/ Author: Chris Robley http://diymusician.cdbaby.com/author/chris-r-at-cd-baby/ This week Blasko and Mike get into the myths of music streaming and digging into the article “The Biggest Myths About Music Streaming” by Chris Robley, tackling the following points: There's no money in itFor artists who own 100% of their publishing and sound recording rights, all their streaming revenue flows to them. No label advances, catalog licensing deals, or complicated splits to contend with. In the major label world though, most songs are written by teams of people. If the artist is lucky enough to be credited as a writer, they're still often splitting those publishing royalties three, or six, or twelve ways. As for the royalties generated by the streaming of a sound recording, well, let's just say the labels have done a fine job keeping much of that dough for themselves It killed the albumStreaming didn't kill the album. Downloads did. If anything, I'd argue that streaming might actually HELP albums. I can window or withhold to drive physical sales or downloads(Windowing is the act of releasing a certain piece of music to different platforms/formats at different times so you can direct fans to whichever outlet benefits you most. Again, that might work if you're Adele. Her fans will go where she commands.) Don't window and don't withhold. Be everywhere, because your fans need you to meet them where THEY hang out. Not visa versa. It's only a matter of time before people realize they miss having the tangible, physical record or CDIf you grew up with vinyl or CDs, I get it — you miss them (or some aspect of them, at least). But most people who were born in the past two decade don't miss them, don't need them, and won't demand their return. If we boycott streaming, everyone will have to go back to the way it was.Whoever does get together to remove their music from, say, Spotify — it's just not going to make that big a difference, because your music isn't as in-demand as bigger artists that actually embrace streaming. Then you're just left out of the party, because your potential fans will be dancing to another artist's jams. --- Email any questions or comments to askblasko@gmail.com Find Blasko on Twitter and Instagram: @blasko1313 Find Mike Mowery on Twitter and Instagram: @mikeoloop ManageMental is part of the Jabberjaw Media Network. www.jabberjawmedia.com Learn more about your ad choices. Hi Listeners! Happy 2017! In the first segment, Ryan and Dave talk about what they did over the holidays. It has been two weeks since the last episode and they missed the listeners a lot. They also talk about some insightful crowdfunding tips from Chris Robley from a recent "DIY Musician" blog post and give an update on the Phillip Phillips lawsuit that may get the American Idol star a little closer to a positive outcome against his former management company. The Phillip Phillips case serves as a useful reminder to all musicians when considering bringing a manager into their career: You cannot let the manager control you. You always have to be the boss. Your manager manages your career, but should not manage you. In the second segment, entertainment lawyer and Artist Empowerment founder Jo-Na Williams stops by. She discusses some legal pitfalls that indie artists should try to avoid and also gives some great advice on managing burnout and taking care of yourself as a human being. You can find out more about her work by visiting www.artistempowerment.co. and www.jo-nawilliams.com. In the final segment, Ryan and Dave talk about recent updates with the Star Trek Axanar lawsuit. Hi Podcast Listeners! The BTB Podcast has moved into its new studio starting with this episode. We hope you enjoy the improved digs. In the first segment, Ryan and Dave talk about the new studio and then discuss the recent controversy involving Kesha's Billboard Music Awards performance. Kesha is currently involved in a lawsuit with her record producer Dr. Luke. Kesha has accused the producer of sexually assaulting her and is trying to get her recording agreement with him terminated. This week, Dr. Luke originally prohibited Kesha from performing at the BBMA's, but eventually changed his mind and approved her appearance. While many are cheering about Kesha being back on the air, Ryan is wondering why Dr. Luke should even have a contractual right to keep her from performing in the first place. In the second segment, musician/blogger/podcaster/marketing professional Chris Robley joins the show. He talks about his latest album ("The Great Make Believer") and his work at CD Baby, and he also gives tips for artists on how to create great music videos on a budget.
