Rockshow Episode 206 Public Image LtdPublic Image Ltd (PiL) is a post-punk band formed in 1978 by John Lydon (formerly Johnny Rotten of the Sex Pistols) after the breakup of the Sex Pistols. The group is renowned for its experimental approach, blending elements of punk, dub, dance, and avant-garde music. Lydon's provocative lyrics and distinctive vocal style have been central to the band's identity.Key Features and History:1.Formation and Early Years:•After leaving the Sex Pistols, Lydon teamed up with guitarist Keith Levene (formerly of The Clash) and bassist Jah Wobble.•Their debut album, First Issue (1978), introduced a stark departure from punk's raw simplicity, featuring a more experimental, bass-heavy sound.2.Breakthrough Album: Metal Box (1979):•Metal Box, their second album, is often hailed as a post-punk masterpiece. It featured hypnotic rhythms, dissonant guitars, and dub-inspired bass lines, with songs like “Death Disco” and “Albatross.”•The album was originally released in a metal film canister, emphasizing their avant-garde ethos.3.Lineup Changes:•PiL has gone through numerous lineup changes over the years, with Lydon being the only consistent member. Key collaborators have included Martin Atkins (drums) and later musicians like Bruce Smith and Lu Edmonds.4.Musical Evolution:•Over the decades, PiL has experimented with a wide range of styles, from danceable grooves on albums like Album (1986) to a more stripped-down rock approach on later works.•Their hit “Rise” (1986) remains one of their most accessible songs, with the refrain “Anger is an energy” becoming iconic.5.Hiatus and Reformation:•After releasing That What Is Not (1992), the band went on hiatus as Lydon pursued other projects.•PiL reformed in 2009 and released new material, including This is PiL (2012) and What the World Needs Now… (2015).6.Legacy:•PiL is credited with influencing numerous genres and artists, from post-punk to industrial and alternative rock.•Their emphasis on innovation and boundary-pushing has solidified their reputation as one of the most daring and original bands of their era.Notable Songs:“Public Image”“Death Disco”“Rise”“This is Not a Love Song”“Flowers of Romance”PiL remains a vital force in music, with Lydon continuing to challenge norms and redefine his artistic output.https://www.pilofficial.com/https://www.facebook.com/share/17tcHb1i8G/?mibextid=LQQJ4dhttps://www.instagram.com/pilofficial?igsh=MmQ0ajVibTA2N3Ixhttps://x.com/pilofficial?s=21&t=Mzw5de5zsR-SDDbhyzH0Lghttps://youtube.com/@pilofficial?si=BcHd6fXVRXQxQfrb#PublicImageLtd#PiL#JohnLydon#PostPunk#ExperimentalMusic#MetalBox#AngerIsAnEnergy#Rise#ThisIsNotALoveSong#PostPunkLegend#AvantGardeMusic#PunkRockHistory#DubInfluence#80sMusic#MusicInnovation#AlternativeMusicIconsPlease follow us on Youtube,Facebook,Instagram,Twitter,Patreon and at www.gettinglumpedup.comhttps://linktr.ee/RobRossiGet your T-shirt at https://www.prowrestlingtees.com/gettinglumpedupAnd https://www.bonfire.com/store/getting-lumped-up/Subscribe to the channel and hit the like button This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/rob-rossi/support https://www.patreon.com/Gettinglumpedup

Darryl Hurs stops by to chat the Indie Music Scene and Venue X Venue Festival Event Introduction: Indie Week and Venue X Venue Brent welcomes Darryl Hurs, who introduces the upcoming Venue X Venue festival happening from November 14-16 in London, Ontario. This event, featuring 60 artists across seven venues, is a significant addition to Ontario's vibrant music scene. DIT Platform and Industry Reset Post-COVID Darryl discusses his DIT (Do It Together) platform, a networking hub similar to LinkedIn but tailored for indie artists and industry professionals. Post-COVID, there's been a notable shift toward digital spaces, including online webinars and events through DIT, with mental health becoming a crucial focus as artists navigate new industry challenges. Supporting Indie Artists: Challenges and Opportunities Through DIT, Darryl's work centers on educating and connecting indie artists. He explains how shifts from record sales to streaming have reshaped artist careers, while social media has become essential for visibility. Challenges include navigating an industry that now demands more self-promotion and business savvy than ever before. London's Music Scene and Venue X Venue's Community Impact Venue X Venue is also a testament to London, Ontario's thriving music environment. With backing from the London Music Office, the festival aims to foster community by giving artists performance and networking opportunities, facilitating growth in the indie music sector. Festivals and Conferences as Career Catalysts Brent and Darryl highlight how festivals and conferences are crucial for indie artist growth, with networking being a key component. Darryl shares a personal example of meeting music industry icon Martin Atkins on MySpace, which evolved into a meaningful professional relationship. The Future of DIT and Venue X Venue DIT's mission is to provide growth avenues for indie artists and to create new industry connections. Darryl and Brent discuss the need for sustained support systems and platforms like DIT to help artists and professionals thrive in the evolving music landscape. Networking and Relationship-Building in the Music Industry Both Brent and Darryl stress the importance of networking, sharing that respect for all members of the industry—from interns to executives—is essential, as today's juniors can become tomorrow's leaders. Festivals like Venue X Venue provide a prime environment for these connections. Data, Targeted Marketing, and International Reach Data analysis is increasingly valuable in the music industry. Darryl mentions tools like Chart Metric for identifying potential markets and using affordable online ads to test audience interest. Targeted marketing and understanding data help artists efficiently grow their fan base, especially when aiming to reach international markets. Social Media's Role in Today's Music Scene Social media has made it easier for indie artists to enter the industry, though maintaining authenticity remains a challenge. Darryl emphasizes the importance of a sustainable approach to career-building in a social-media-driven environment. Online platforms and webinars will continue to offer essential learning and networking opportunities. Moreover, Darryl highlights the importance of wellness, recalling past events where a full day was dedicated to mental health and wellness. Community and Collaboration Community is at the heart of Darryl's vision, with Venue X Venue and DIT both aiming to foster collaboration and support among artists. Here's where things get a little bit strange. Back in the late 90's, there apparently was a meeting that very nearly created a revival, not reunion, of what was once considered to be Public Image Ltd, but Johnny Lydon wouldn't do it. So, instead we got The Damage Manual featuring Martin Atkins of PIL, Chris Connelly of Ministry on vocals, Geordie Walker of Killing Joke on guitar, and Jah Wobble of PIL on bass. What could've been right? But the DMA didn't miss the mark, we were lucky enough to have Brandon Ringo of the Little Rock, AR sludge doom metal band, Mammoth Caravan, join us to give his thoughts on the record. In The Earthscape segment, Robin and co-host Wendy Sheridan discuss their results of the 7 Identities Test for gender. In News: the historic indictment of Donald Trump, recent major US Supreme Court decisions, the confirmation of Nusrat Choudhury, the US' first female Muslim federal judge, the grand jury indictment of Marine veteran Daniel Penny on charges connected to the fatal choking of Jordan Neely on a New York City subway, the remarkable house painting of Tash Frootko in Gloucester UK, and Illinois becomes the first US state to ban book banning in libraries, which leads to the question: How many book bans would a book ban ban ban if a book ban ban could ban book bans? At the top of the show, Wendy and Robin reveal Random Facts about ant life and a tiny unit of time. The show is rounded out by the You Got Questions? In the season two premier of the HigherEdJobs Podcast, Martin Atkins shares his advice for job seekers and life seekers. Martin stresses that the worst time to look for a job is when you are under any kind of duress. Andy and Martin discuss how job searches can shift in scope and emotional duress depending on the circumstances. Finding a job because you are interested in expanding your skillset versus finding a job because you HAVE to, are two very different job searches. Our second premiere of the day comes from Closer Orbit as he releases an EP on Detroit's Motech Records. 'Rave Things' is an ode to Detroit, as Closer Orbit channels the classic slamming groove, combined with deep and soulful undertones. Detroit's Motech Records welcomes Nicolaas Black to the fold, as he unveils his newest project Closer Orbit with the ‘Rave Things EP'. A four track project that see Nico return to the roots of his sound and to the basics of techno funk. Nico has a long musical history, from his exposure to opera and classical at a young age to the experimental explosion in the 90s via artists like Front 242, KMFDM, 808 State, Nitzer Ebb and NIN. After attending his first illegal rave in Detroit, he learned to mix vinyl and the progression to a dancefloor aesthetic was sealed. His instinct led to a 6 year sojourn in Chicago, where he was fortunate to meet some of the seminal pioneers of house, and began assisting studio sessions at Slang Music Group - Frankie Knuckles, Paul Johnson, Joe Smooth, Ron Carroll, Craig Loftus and Vince Lawrence, amongst others. Later he worked for Mark Picchiotti at Blueplate Records, rounding out his 4-on-the-floor education. He also engineered a “Pigface” album for Martin Atkins of P.I.L. fame, solidifying his industrial roots. Countless DJ sets, raves, festivals and recording sessions later, he is now based in Los Angeles and stays committed to the studio and impromptu surf missions. A consummate producer, under several monikers his music and sets bridge the width of the underground dance music spectrum, from Chicago to Detroit, Berlin to LA; from techno to electro, jazz to funky house, disco, acid, industrial and beyond. His reproduction of Fela Kuti's ‘Zombie' remains a seminal warehouse favourite and 2020's ‘The Sun' has to-date racked up well over a million plays on SoundCloud. Priding himself on constant evolution and growth, he presents his Closer Orbit incarnation. ‘Rave Things EP' releases on 17 June, and features 4 new tracks that draw from his many influences including the monster house opener ‘Piano Track' and melodious ‘State Of (I Still Believe)', to the Detroitesque ‘Rave Things,' before the deep and synthy ‘Foldspace' closes this varied and reflective EP. 'Rave Things' is a peak time dance-floor bliss, as Nico works a 909 to the fullest and stabs and strings simmer around the front of the tracks soundscape. This is techno at it's rawest, funkiest and best. For this last episode of 2021, Canadian Musician Editor-in-Chief Mike Raine shares a special keynote interview with Martin Atkins that was originally livestreamed in November during Indie Week 2021. Atkins' three decades in the music business spans across genres, borders, and industries. Having experience in nearly every aspect of record production and promotion has given him a unique perspective not only on where the music industry is currently, but where it is going in the future. As a drummer, he known for being a member of Johnny Rotten's Public Image Limited in the late'70s and ‘80s, and then for managing and playing with Killing Joke and touring with Ministry. In 1990, while on tour with Ministry, he formed his own band, Pigface. He also worked with Nine Inch Nails, performing on the Grammy award winning “Wish” and appearing in the “Head like a Hole” video. Martin began working on the business side of music in 1988 when he formed Invisible Records and then Mattress Factory Studios in 1996. Atkins wrote his book Tour:Smart in 2007 and has since spoken around the world at major industry conferences, universities, and organizations. Atkins currently teaches at Millikin University in Decatur, IL and acts as the Music Business Program Coordinator, leading courses on Touring, Advanced Entrepreneurship, Artist and Event Management, and Online Marketing. Needless to say, the stories and advice Atkins can offer to independent artists are endless, and this is a conversation really worth hearing!
Martin Atkins is an English drummer and session musician, best known for his work in post-punk and industrial bands including Public Image Ltd, Killing Joke, and Pigface, which has been around since 1990. Martin is an entrepreneur, educator, and musician who has been in the music business for 40 years now. In this episode, Martin shares his crazy experiences being in a band, joining an initiative that impacts the community, and writing a book, Band:Smart, which probably holds the World Guinness Record for the number of f#%* in a book. Here are some power takeaways from today's conversation: Martin's band journey Finding empathy inside music despite all the chaos The transfer of energy from music to coffee Why Martin thinks optimism is “naive stupidity” Episode Highlights: Finding Protection From Charisma In a music world where spit and piss were commonplace back in the 70s, Martin believes there's this swirling dark side of charisma, which is a powerful magnetic force. He recalls seeing their vocalist, Johnny Rotten, magnetize 10,000 people who protected them at a time when no physical security guards or barriers could protect them. The Tiny Things Many people want to be a worldwide superstar, a global person, or number one in whatever field or industry they're in, and so, the tiny things can seem useless and not worthwhile. But this pandemic has definitely shown us how it's those little things you do to help other people who are struggling that actually make a huge impact. Martin's Thoughts on Optimism Martin thinks optimism is “naive stupidity” because what really matters at the end of the day is how you're able to express little acts of kindness to the people around you. Music On Your Own Terms 125 - Martin Atkins - The Secret To Success Is Unneutered Zombie Kittens It is with great pleasure that I present my interview with the one and only Martin Atkins, drummer for Public Image Limited, Killing Joke, Ministry, his own band Pigface, entrepreneur, college lecturer, author, and international speaker. Martin talks about his journey, from his dad getting him a drum kit and setting him up with gigs, the early punk scene and joining PIL, to noticing the mismanagement of the bands, he was in and turning their finances around through merch. We learn about how Martin got into teaching students through his experiences with touring and the music business, writing books based on those classes, how that led to talking at music festivals, and the impetus of turning the collections of memorabilia from the past 40 plus years into a museum. We also find out how Ivar Bjornson, guitarist for the Norwegian band Enslaved, taught Martin the importance of saying YES, to everything. Click here for the main show notes page! Question: How do you decide what adventures to take in your nonlinear career? What are intentional plans vs. accidents? Guest: Martin Atkins, Music Industries Coordinator, Millikin University; producer, drummer, documentary filmmaker, DJ, and teacher Photo: Kara Hammond and NARAS Martin Atkins talked with our host, Gigi Johnson, from his studio that also acts as a museum of all of the adventurous projects around his career. Martin shared how he began drumming at age 9 and persistently getting into Public Image Ltd, waiting through 5 drummers. He talked about believing early on that he had a job -- "it's being me." He diversified by accident and kept adding roles as blockages came his way, including launching bands and labels. Each time, he picked the best option that arose and looked for both safety nets and for solutions IN the problem itself. Our Guest Martin Atkins is the definition of entrepreneurial activity in cultural arts endeavors, his 35+ years in the music business spans across genres, borders, and industries. Young Southpaw talks to Martin Atkins (Pigface, PiL, Brian Brain, Killing Joke, Damage Manual, etc.) about his punk rock ethos, entrepreneurial skills, books and zoom talks, as well as Public Image Limited on American Bandstand, Commercial Zone, GG Allin, the ‘Paul McCartney clause’, and much more https://martinatkins.bigcartel.com/products https://twitter.com/marteeeen Martin Atkins: I’ve got four drawers of board tapes, alternative mixes...So if you’re a PiL fan, I’ve got both nights in Paris, it was released as Paris Au Printemps, that was my first show. And I’ve got both nights’ board tapes. It was actually my suggestion that we release it as a live album. I’ve got both nights in Tokyo. We released one night. [Commercial Zone] is only Keith Levene’s album in that he stole the tapes. I talk about this in one of my presentations - while we were in New York, there were 17 rolls of two-inch tape. So this is me applying - I have my Master’s Degree now, big deal, but it changes the way I look at things - so instead of just going ‘we recorded a bunch of material, it was crazy’, well how much material did we record? Okay, so I go and look at my cassette archive, there’s 17 rolls of two-inch tape. How much music fits on a roll? 32 minutes. Oh my god. So now I have a spreadsheet with all of the songs, all of the versions. There are some songs on Commercial Zone that Keith isn’t even on, that he didn’t know existed until he took the tapes. I don’t think it’s any secret that Keith had a drug problem. Like a really serious drug problem. A really serious problem with serious drugs. We were all using speed and drinking a lot, but he was levels above. There were times...you know John [Lydon] is a magical, charismatic individual. And his charisma protected PiL. There could be 10,000 people in a room and John could stare everybody down, more effectively than security punching people. And we were protected by that. It also allowed for Keith to be not always there at shows. He’d take a two song break. And we’d just do an instrumental version, or John would just sing over bass and drums. And people would be like ‘wow, PiL, it’s crazy’. Instead of ‘hold on a minute, where’s the guitarist? I like this song.’ But we got away with it. I think less and less, but we did get away with it. When we booked ten shows in Japan, the walls started to close in on this version of the band. There are very strict drug laws in Japan. You can’t have a Vicks inhaler. They’re illegal because they’re a stimulant. Never mind heroin. And then Paul McCartney and his band, Wings, he got off a plane with like a kilo of weed. He was in jail for 11 days. I mean, the world went mad. He was fined a million dollars, and then let go. But what happened was every Japanese promoter then retroactively inserted something called ‘the Paul McCartney clause’....

Interview with musician and educator Martin Atkins
Portion of an interview with musician and instructor Martin Atkins.
Martin Atkins’s book, Tour Smart: And Break the Band, is celebrating its 10-year anniversary. It addresses all the aspects that go into planning a successful tour and features interviews with prominent musicians, club owners, tour managers, and other music industry professionals. Some of the people interviewed in it include Chris Connelly, Henry Rollins, and representatives from the House of Blues […] The post Tour Smart: Music Industry Lessons from Martin Atkins appeared first on The nsavides Podcast | filmmaking | music | cinematography | writing.
Martin Atkins played with Johnny Rotten/Lydon in Public Image, Ltd. He was a member of Killing Joke. He created the industrial rock supergroup Pigface (now celebrating its 25-year anniversary). He's played with Nine Inch Nails and Ministry. He's written indispensable books about the music industry (Tour:Smart, Band:Smart and Welcome to the Music Business: You're F****d!). And now, his career path has brought him to the front seat of my Mazda 3 to eat Italian Beef sandwiches at Fabulous Freddies in Bridgeport (not all that far from U.S. Cellular Field). Over the course of conversation, Atkins talks about his relationship with John Lydon (it's up and down). He also tells some amazing Pigface stories. For instance: A guy once played a shopping cart on stage; it was exactly what you'd expect. On the more scandalous tip, Martin once turned the tour bus over to a pair of newlyweds who did a lot of what newlyweds do. He talks about the music industry, writing process and a lifetime's worth of memories I can't help but be awed by. And I also discovered in this episode that Martin doesn't need water to survive; he sustains himself on au jus. Note: There are a few salty words in this week's show, but they sound really good and proper when Martin says them.

I have been speaking to Martin about doing this interview for about a year. Between our schedules it seems to have been almost impossible to line it up. Finally we made it happen and 25 minutes in you'll find out how it ended... Martin is a guy that has "been there, done that..." he has played with everyone from Johnny Rotten in his band Public Image, Ltd to Pig Face, Killing Joke, Nine Inch Nails, Ministry, Flea, Danny Carey from Tool, and many others... He owns a record label and is an in demand speaker at music conferences around the world as well as a professor at Columbia College in Chicago. He is the author of many books including most recently Tour Smart. I was curious to find out what the decisions and opportunities had been along the way that lead Martin from Johnny Rotten to the educator and entrepreneur he is today. For the record he still plays on albums and sits behind the kit for bands. How he has time for everything I don't know but he was up for sharing some of it with me to answer these questions! Enjoy!
