Pass the Baton: Empowering Students in Music Education, a Podcast for Music Teachers
In episode 76, Theresa and Kathryn welcome Gillian Desmarais Keller, an award-winning music educator specializing in K-12 music technology. Gillian shares her journey from teaching elementary music to establishing a cutting-edge music technology program in Maplewood Public Schools. She highlights the importance of integrating technology into traditional music education, offering students new opportunities for creativity through recording, lyric writing, and music production. Gillian also discusses how technology can enhance the learning experience by blending traditional music theory with modern tools like digital audio workstations (DAWs) such as Soundtrap and Ableton. The conversation emphasizes the potential of music technology to engage a wider range of students, including those who may not be interested in traditional music programs. Gillian shares practical tips for teachers to start incorporating technology into their classrooms, advocating for the use of web applications like Chrome Music Lab and Groove Pizza as entry points. Whether you're a band director, choir teacher, or general music instructor, this episode provides valuable insights on how to make music education more accessible and relevant to all students. Welcome back to Artbeat Radio! This episode consists of 2 songs made by service users using the digital audio workstation Soundtrap. The first song's theme is “happy”, and the second song's theme is “excited”. Service users first picked the theme of the songs and then picked different available loops they decided related to the theme. Drum, bass, synth, and melodic loops were chosen to create the entire soundscape. Next, a melodic line was created using Chrome Music Lab's Melody Maker application. The lyrics were then explored by discussing what made service users both “happy” and “excited”. Finally, lyrics were recorded by the service users and layered on top of the created soundscape. The final product represents the service users' experiences of these two emotions. Thank you to Nancy Terrey, Brian Corder, Doug Calhoun, Maria Ramirez, Aaron Francis, and Jamie Haverman Thanks for listening and tune in next time! Welcome to episode 207 ("Scraping is NOT a Crime") of the EdTech Situation Room from February 3, 2021, where technology news meets educational analysis. This week Jason Neiffer (@techsavvyteach) and Wesley Fryer (@wfryer) discussed digital security, 5G / Connectivity, Apple news, Google news, burgeoning Chromebook sales, and "the tech correction." This included the threat and possibility of Google discontinuing its search service in Australia in response to newly proposed tax laws. Ongoing disclosures via Parler following the January 6, 2021 riot at the U.S. capitol were also discussed, including a Lawfare article explaining why the "web scraping" which was done to archive / backup Parler's terabytes of user submitted media was NOT illegal / a violation of U.S. law. We also briefly mentioned two new videoconferencing / video chat platforms, Kumospace (via Peggy George and Teachers Teaching Teaches) and Class.com from Zoom. Geeks of the Week included Stack Social, Jimmy Wales' nascent social network (WT Social,) an Ethan Zuckerman podcast interview with Jimmy Wales, the Chrome Music Lab, and the "Ground News" media aggregator. Jason delivered tonight's 1AR. Our show was live streamed and archived simultaneously on YouTube Live as well as our Facebook Live page via StreamYard.com, and compressed to a smaller video version (about 100MB) on AmazonS3 using Handbrake software. Please follow us on Twitter @edtechSR for updates, and join us LIVE on Wednesday nights (normally) if you can at 10 pm Eastern / 9 pm Central / 8 pm Mountain / 7 pm Pacific or 3 am UTC. All shownotes are available on http://edtechSR.com/links.
Welcome to episode 4 of “Quarantunes” where quarantine can’t stop our creativity! For this new episode, we get to experience musical expression by our artists at ART Center (Achieving Results Together) 0:33 “The Toy Shop of My Past” In this first song, the class wanted to do a song that was more upbeat, fun, and something you can dance to! Throughout the song, you can hear Eric, an artist at ART Center, playing the accordion and several other of his toys/instruments on top of instrumentation that was put together as a class. 2:30 “Hi Hi Hi” To start off the song, the class voted on a slower tempo. The class then wanted the song to sound happy. Next, they voted on all of the drum sounds and rhythms. Christy, an artist at ART Center, recorded her voice by saying “hi”. Eric then suggested we record a live sample, so he used the V-tech Little Smart Driver from 1989. Eric also suggested we put in keyboard clicks throughout the song. Our first recording together proved to be challenging, yet a lot of fun! 3:40 “Space Capsule” The class voted on doing a more electronic-driven song. The class started with voting for a fast tempo and leaned more towards electronic instruments. Eric started off the song with typing out a live sample. Maria, an artist at ART Center, also sang for the recording. 4:49 “Laboratory Experiment” This last song started off by messing around and getting acquainted with Chrome Music Lab, a free and accessible website that offers fun ways to experiment with music. The class played around with creating a melody they liked and exported it so they could expand on it just a little bit more. It was a new and fun way for the class to create a song! A very special thank you to artists at ART Center for their compositions and album artwork! Learn more about our organization by visiting AbleArtsWork.org Thanks for listening!

So I made this little ditty on Chrome Music Lab, what do we think?
Welcome to episode 2 of Quarantunes! Where quarantine can’t stop our creativity! For this new episode, we get to experience musical expression by artists over at our Therapeutic Arts Program (TAP II) 0:47 "Handwashing Song" is a parody of one of TAP II's favorite songs, "Here Comes the Sun" by the Beatles. The lyrics were written by artists via the online platform, Zoom. The focus of the song is to demonstrate how to properly wash your hands. The artists at TAP II decided to take a basic procedure of maintaining proper hygiene and turn it into a fun tune for their peers and family to listen to! The vocals and guitar were recorded by Jessica, a music therapist at TAP II and Jamond, an artist at TAP II. All other instruments were recorded by various artists using Garageband in the comfort of their own home. Enjoy this wonderful piece and remember to wash your hands! 3:49 “Your Virtual Heart” was composed in a group music therapy session via Zoom. A total of 13 students worked on this instrumental song. Artists used the program ‘Song Maker’ on the website ‘Google Chrome Music Lab’ to compose this piece collaboratively. All artists voted on the instrumentation, tempo, and structure of the song before composing each section independently. There are three sections-- A, B, and C -- each with its own unique style and texture. About half of the artists directly composed their own designated short segments of each major section using the control screen function on Zoom. This means they directly manipulated the program with their own computer, placing notes on the screen where they saw fit. The other half of the group communicated to the music therapist where they wanted their notes placed in preferred rhythms. This created a truly unique songwriting experience, in which each motif represents each individual in the class, creating a comprehensive instrumental piano piece. The title “Your Virtual Heart” reflects the artists’ collective journey exploring music-making in a new, virtual environment. 5:08 "Garageband Quarantunes" is a compilation of various instrumental improvisations that the artists at TAP II recorded on Garageband to a simple guitar sample that the music therapist, Jessica, provided. Each artist chose an instrument of their choice and recorded their improvisation in the comfort of their own home. This song was created to show each artist's expression and emotion by using the gift of music. Enjoy this wonderful piece! 6:42 “My Heart Broke in Music Lab” was composed by TAP II artist, Rudy during his 1:1 music therapy sessions. This artist utilized the ‘Song Maker’ app found on the website “Chrome Music Lab”. He made all choices about instrumentation, tempo and structure prior to composing. This artist controlled the music therapist's screen to independently explore different musical motifs and lay down notes to create three distinct sections of music. The music therapist and artist converted the sections to Garageband where effects were added and he got to select percussive styles and drum tracks. This song was meant to highlight the creative ways musical collaboration can still take place even when we are not able to do so in person. A very special thanks to our narrator from ART Center, and album cover artist from TAP II.
