During this episode, Amy Neumann, the Founder and Executive Director of Resourceful Nonprofit, highlighted how AI can help nonprofits streamline operations and amplify their impact. Drawing from her book, Empower Your Nonprofit, Amy explained how AI offers unprecedented opportunities for mission-driven organizations to achieve more with fewer resources.“AI enables nonprofits to synthesize years of data into actionable insights,” Amy explained. She noted that this can help nonprofits create concise impact reports, donor presentations, or executive summaries that would otherwise require hours of manual effort. “It's not about the technology itself but how it can help us impact the world positively,” she said. One standout example Amy shared was the use of generative AI tools like ChatGPT or Claude for drafting content. These tools not only accelerate content creation but also provide tailored insights to refine messaging for specific audiences, such as funders or volunteers. Amy emphasized that AI allows organizations to “turn insights into impact” by removing barriers to efficiency and creativity. She also addressed common fears surrounding AI adoption. “Some people have a moral objection to AI,” Amy acknowledged. However, she shared success stories of skeptics who, after learning how accessible and effective AI tools are, became champions of their use within their organizations.Amy's enthusiasm for technology's potential to drive social good was infectious. Her insights challenge nonprofits to embrace AI as a tool for amplifying their mission. Her organization, Resourceful Nonprofit, is pioneering this approach by helping nonprofits integrate AI into their workflows to foster inclusivity and efficiency.Nonprofits looking to amplify their impact should heed Amy's advice: Start small, experiment with accessible tools, and focus on how AI can support—not replace—the human element of mission-driven work.tl;dr:* Amy Neumann highlights AI's potential to help nonprofits synthesize data and amplify their missions.* She explains how generative AI tools simplify tasks like reporting, content creation, and impact measurement.* Amy shares her superpower of translating complex technologies into actionable social impact initiatives.* A compelling example shows how AI accelerates learning, saving time for mission-driven work.* Practical tips encourage nonprofits to embrace AI for efficiency and creativity without requiring technical expertise. How to Develop Translating Technology into Action As a SuperpowerAmy's superpower is her ability to translate complex technologies, like AI, into actionable insights for creating meaningful social impact. “I got obsessed early on with figuring out how technology could change the world,” Amy said. She leverages this skill to inspire others to adopt and implement technology for their missions.Amy shared how she uses AI to accelerate her own learning and productivity. For example, she uses generative AI to quickly gather and synthesize credible resources, enabling her to stay ahead in her studies and work. This efficiency has not only transformed her learning process but also demonstrates how nonprofits can use AI to better serve their missions by saving time and effort.Tips for Developing This Superpower:* Start with curiosity: Explore how new tools can help solve everyday challenges.* Practice co-creating with AI by combining its insights with your creativity.* Use generative AI tools for tasks like research, content creation, or problem-solving.* Start small: Experiment with user-friendly tools like ChatGPT or Poe for specific tasks.* Embrace a growth mindset: Recognize that no one is born with expertise—practice and learning are key. Conclusion: By following Amy Neumann's example and advice, you can make “translating technology into action” a skill. With practice and effort, you could make it a superpower that enables you to do more good in the world.Remember, however, that research into success suggests that building on your own superpowers is more important than creating new ones or overcoming weaknesses. In this short podcast episode, Clifton Beck joins us to talk about Bluon's free tech support and resources available to technicians and installers. Clifton has been very in touch with the HVAC technician community since he got his start in the trades, and he has taken that into tech support. He has noticed that the inefficiency in our industry tends to come from poorly learned practices, and working in tech support is a way for him to do his part to spread better practices while helping others. Lately, Bluon has become more of a tech support business. The new shift to focus on innovation has prompted Bluon to shift from making equipment more efficient to making technicians more efficient. The whole HVAC industry relies on that progression from developing on equipment to people. Tech support consists of answering calls but also creating training videos and creating layers of technician education and development. Manuals are just part of the picture; tech support helps with part identification AND the sequence of operations. Tech support reduces the amount of time it takes to learn about a part or locate components, which makes technicians more efficient and strengthens our industry. Overall, tech support calls are opportunities to train technicians to do better; they don't just have to give away simple answers that don't really help anyone. Clifton and Bryan also discuss: Bluon's growth Trends in tech support calls Tech support and community involvement Feeling accomplished as a tech support representative   Learn more about Bluon's free tech support on the Bluon app, or you can check out bluon.com.  If you have an iPhone, subscribe to the podcast HERE, and if you have an Android phone, subscribe HERE. I rarely get nervous interviewing someone but when you speak with a Canadian broadcast legend, you can't help but get a little bit flustered. Valerie Pringle, the former host of Canada AM is now working tirelessly behind the scenes to raise awareness for the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health Foundation, and candidly shares some details of her own experience helping her three children with their mental health struggles, PLUS some tips for parents going through the same in their homes. Anne Brodie is back with more entertainment this week as Omicron leaves us few options outside the home. You will definitely want to sink your teeth into Shonda Rhimes latest on Netflix called Inventing Anna. This 10 part mini-series stars the incredible Julia Garner from Ozark in the lead as Anna Delvey, who committed massive fraud pretending to be a mysterious German "heiress”. This based on a true story series is just the escape we all need right now. The need for women in politics is clear, but the barriers to entry are high as Glynis Ratcliffe found out when she considered throwing her hat in the ring for the upcoming provincial election in Ontario. Glynis shares some of the hurdles she faced, why she had to pause, and some thoughts on making a path into politics more equitable. After almost two years in isolation together, couples are noticing a lot of things about each other, including the division of labour in the house. So when is it problematic? When it's weaponized incompetence. Lisa Sonni, a life and relationship coach who helps clients of all walks of life overcome challenges stemming from traumatic and or abusive partnerships joins me to help us define the term, recognize it and get it out of your life. Are you looking to upgrade your skills for the job market? Then you will definitely want to stick around to listen to my interview with Nancy Baker from Fort Erie International Academy, who has details to share on ten courses being offered to the public absolutely free to help upgrade technology skills. Finally, Ontario has passed right to disconnect legislation that takes effect June 2 this year. While it's most certainly welcome, especially for those seeking work-life balance after two years in in a pandemic, my final guest says that so far it appears to be largely a political move, that doesn't carry a lot of substance or direction with it. Deborah Hudson, an employment lawyer from Hudson Sinclair LLP joins me to share what employers and employees need to know right now about Right to Disconnect. He added that we could see a 50% slump in office occupancy for up to a year after lockdown due to "phased occupancy and seating teams much wider apart physically." Gedye added that some companies are even considering seven day working weeks to move away from traditional office utilisation peaks and troughs and explained how occupiers are starting to rethink their longer term space and lease requirements.  For this plus his thoughts on how this could impact the future of the office more broadly, tune in to this week's Tech Talk Radio podcast.

We’re doing something different today! This episode features my very first on-air coaching guest, Jasmine Saab. Jasmine is a second-year fourth-grade teacher at Marrington Elementary School near Charleston, South Carolina. She loves integrating movement and technology from her classroom. Originally from California, Jasmine fills her time with a wide array of hobbies ranging from tandem bike riding to volunteering to singing in foreign languages. Jasmine’s awards and accomplishments list is so long that I need to include it separately, so check it out below! As you can probably guess from that impressive list, Jasmine is an excellent teacher who’s doing some truly amazing things in her classroom. As you’ll hear today, she also has some struggles, specifically around technology. She’s inspired by technology without always thinking things through to the end in terms of planning and her learning goals. And that’s why she’s on the show today! I’ll coach her through this struggle and help her think of some new ways to think of her lesson design. One of Jasmine’s coolest projects is her robotic water cycle lesson, which involves all kinds of skills from her students. As she’ll explain, though, the lesson didn’t go perfectly. In our conversation today, we’ll focus specifically on this lesson, and I’ll ask her a series of questions that will help guide her through ways to make it better. We also talk about Jasmine’s new classroom toy, a 3D printer and how she can design meaningful learning experiences for her students using this device. These questions should help her (and you!) figure out how to improve various other lessons too. Listen in for some advice on how to make sure that tech fits your learning goals, and to hear about why it’s so important not to get distracted by the fun, shiny objects in technology. [ctt template="1" link="N6Rh2" via="yes" ]How to Stay Focused on the Learning Goals, NOT the technology! #edtech[/ctt] In This Episode: [00:28] - Kasey welcomes listeners to today’s episode and explains what it will be all about. [02:11] - Before we dive into this episode, Kasey gives a shout out to the Shake Up Learning podcast launch team! [03:38] - Jasmine introduces herself and talks about the students and parent involvement at her school. [08:58] - We hear about what Jasmine’s class looks like on a day-to-day basis, specifically in terms of technology. [16:54] - Kasey shares her response to all of the awesome things that Jasmine is doing in her classroom. [17:44] - Does Jasmine have any videos of the projects she’s been talking about? [18:35] - Jasmine explains why she wants Kasey’s help. [20:14] - Kasey starts off her coaching by asking Jasmine some questions specifically about the water cycle lessons. [21:48] - On a scale of 1-10, how would Jasmine rank her water cycle lesson? [24:57] - Kasey responds to Jasmine’s rating of her lesson, as well as the issues that she struggled with in her classroom [26:05] - How much time did Jasmine originally plan for this lesson? [27:44] - We hear about what would have made Jasmine’s lesson a 10 instead of a 9. [30:50] - Kasey points out the importance of having an end goal in mind. [32:31] - Jasmine talks about the 3D printer project that she’s working on right now. [34:50] - Kasey takes a step back and offers Jasmine a piece of advice: always start with the learning goal! [37:03] - Was there a learning goal that Kasey had in mind with all of this? [41:38] - We hear Kasey’s advice on adding in tech only when it will lead directly to learning goals. [43:25] - Jasmine replies to Kasey’s advice and talks about where her thoughts are now and what she is realizing from this conversation. [45:48] - Kasey makes a suggestion for Jasmine. [47:31] - What Kasey has been saying is related to the fail-forward concept, Jasmine points out. [48:29] - We learn more about Genius Hour and how it works. [51:40] - What are Jasmine’s next steps, and what does she think she’ll work on next? [54:51] - Here’s this week’s podcast question: have you ever tried to integrate too much at once, like Jasmine? How do you ensure that your enthusiasm doesn’t distract from the purpose of the lesson? Share your answers on your favorite social media platform using the #shakeuplearning hashtag, or post it in the Shake Up Learning Community on Facebook! [56:06] - Kasey has three Google Certification courses, for which enrollment is opening on May 21st for a limited time! These are: The Google Certified Educator Level 1 Academy The Google Certified Educator Level 2 Academy Become a Google Certified Trainer Online Course If you want to take all of the courses, you can save by buying the bundle! This past week, Google Slides released some pretty amazing updates that are certainly going to be helpful for both teachers and tech coaches. On this episode of the TechEducator Podcast (https://www.teachercast.net/tep) , we take a look at these new features and how they can be used in your classroom. Please join us LIVE every Tuesday night for the TeacherCast.tv (http://TeacherCast.tv) and join in our live interactive chat box. How can we use the following new features?Grid ViewGrid view allows users to see all of your slides in a multi-row, multi-column grid. This feature revolves nicely around another new feature where you can now mute slides so they don't appear in your final presentation. Let's face it, when your slides are on the left side of the screen, you only see a handful at a time. With your slides in a grid, you can quickly see more of them to rearrange and edit quicker. Linking SlidesMany of us teach a class or subject that is also taught by another set of teachers. Or, perhaps a school leader is creating slides for a parent presentation and they want their school building leaders to embed that presentation on to THEIR slide decks. With a new slide-linking feature, users can create a set of slides and copy/paste them into another slide deck. When you hit the paste button, the new deck will give you an option to copy as is, or link the slides. When slides are linked, they act as one single slide. If you adjust one slide, the other deck gets adjusted as well. This is a game changer for anyone doing PD on a topic but uses that same set of slides for multiple presentations. Timelines, Graphs, ChartsI recently had a horrible experience where a math teacher told me (several times) that Google and Math just do not work well together. This same teacher came up to me recently with a smile on their face and told me that the new ability to add and manipulate charts and graphs on their slides was a total game changer. To add a chart, simply go to the Insert menu and insert one of several beautifully designed templates onto your slide. Coding boot camps are everywhere these days, promising to arm you with the most highly sought skill in the modern economy: computer programming. This week Bloomberg Technology's Sarah McBride and Marie Mawad report on Ecole 42's newly-opened Silicon Valley branch, which is hoping to repeat the Paris school's success in training underprivileged youth.
