This is a fun episode, folks.  It's also a little depressing.  But depressing can be fun, right?  Well, fun or not, we're about to take a deep dive on three actors whose fall from grace left television as their only option in the 80s.  George Peppard, George C. Scott, and Jan-Michael Vincent were once stars of the silver screen, bur after years of drinking, financial woes, and poor behavior, found that TV was their last chance for any significant roles.  Like Richard Gere in An Officer and a Gentleman, they had nowhere else to go!!!  Enjoy!

This week, I'm honored to be joined by not one but two brilliant screenwriters, Larry Karaszewski & Daniel Waters. Larry Karaszewski & his writing/directing/producing partner Scott Alexander are best known for writing unusual true stories such as the films ED WOOD, THE PEOPLE VS. LARRY FLYNT, MAN ON THE MOON, AUTO FOCUS, BIG EYES, DOLEMITE IS MY NAME, & the hit television miniseries THE PEOPLE VS. OJ SIMPSON: AMERICAN CRIME STORY. The team has won Emmys, Golden Globes, Producers, & Writers Guild Awards. Additionally, Larry is also a former Governor & Vice President of the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts & Sciences. Born in Ohio & raised in Indiana, Daniel Waters is the Edgar award-winning screenwriter of the 1988 cult classic HEATHERS starring Winona Ryder & Christian Slater. Additionally, the man who wrote or co-wrote the films BATMAN RETURNS, HUDSON HAWK, THE ADVENTURES OF FORD FAIRLANE, DEMOLITION MAN, & more, he's also the writer-director of HAPPY CAMPERS & SEX & DEATH 101. Best friends & movie buddies since their teenage years in Indiana, in the fourth season of Watch With Jen, the two joined me to dissect the films of director Michael Ritchie, & this year, they're back to take us on another trip through the films of the 1970s, courtesy of actor Jan-Michael Vincent whose luscious blonde hair & laid back approach made him one of the most popular up-and-coming stars of the era. Although initially, we agreed on five films, including BUSTER & BILLIE, THE MECHANIC, WHITE LINE FEVER, THE WORLD'S GREATEST ATHLETE, & VIGILANTE FORCE, Larry & Dan made it their mission to do as much extra credit as possible, watching everything from obscure TV movies like TRIBES & SANDCASTLES to bigger hits like HOOPER & more. Along the way, we discuss Dan's issues with JMV in the '70s & this dream (or nightmare) he had where I ruined the vibe of his party, Larry's decision to watch two JMV movies on the ceiling under laughing gas at the dentist, & much, much more. What can I say? This conversation is a journey - a rollicking, thoughtful, & very engaging journey - & you're sure to love it.Originally Posted on Patreon (8/20/24) here: https://www.patreon.com/posts/110417546Theme Music: Solo Acoustic Guitar by Jason Shaw, Free Music Archive Shop Watch With Jen logo Merchandise in Logo Designer Kate Gabrielle's Threadless ShopDonate to the Pod via Ko-fi

Back in 1972 when you had a problem with someone, and if you could afford it you'd call a mechanic, but if Charles Brosnson turned up at your door chances are he wasn't going to replace a tyre of cam belt. The mechanic in question is a term for a hit man and Charlie is doing nicely until Jan Michael Vincent comes along and want to be taught the ways of the world. Luckily we're not discussing Jan's interpretation of the script...that's a whole different podcast, but the action is in good hands with ALAN GIBBS in charge, in particular the exciting bike chase which we highlight here. Brian and I met under very unique and stressful circumstances when we were 20 years old at the US Marine Corps' Officer Candidate School in Quantico, Virginia. This article in the Washington Post made me question my decision to attend OCS.  I then ended up  watching this movie, Baby Blue Marine, with Jan Michael Vincent, the night before leaving for Quantico.  As a result, I was extremely concerned about my upcoming fate at Quantico!  Sully and my bunkmate, Pete Swicker, made the time and stress at OCS manageable and the three of us still talk to this day. It is hard to believe that over 40 years have passed by since we first met. I enjoyed catching up with Brian on this episode.

Once Upon a Time back in the 1970's, there was NO bigger star in the world than Burton Leon Reynolds from Lansing, MI.....known to most as Burt Reynolds.  The late great Burt stars as the eponymous Hooper who is considered by many to be "The Greatest Stuntman Alive!"  Hooper LOVES his job and is loving the work on his latest picture - only years of punishment on his body is starting to take its toll so Hooper is starting to wonder how many years he has left in this trade which his girlfriend (Sally Field) is also starting to worry about.  That and a hot new stuntman (Jan Michael Vincent) has emerged  providing some competition.  And what results is a rip-roaring action comedy/drama filled loads of impressive stunts which was directed by stuntman extraordinaire Hal Needham who had also directed Reynolds the year before in the smash hit Smokey & the Bandit.   Host: Geoff Gershon Editors: Geoff and Ella GershonProducer: Marlene Gershonhttps://livingforthecinema.com/ https://livingforthecinema.com/Facebook:https://www.facebook.com/Living-for-the-Cinema-Podcast-101167838847578Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/livingforthecinema/Letterboxd:https://letterboxd.com/Living4Cinema/

Film reviews, shmilm reviews! I've gotta catch up on these film reviews. Hi friends today we have a podcast available for you to listen to and perhaps even enjoy where we review 6 movies from the 70's. If yer curious about them we will give you some insights and maybe spoil a lil bit of a 40 to 50 year old plus film. I don't think we will do any real enjoyment damage though, I dunno, tell me different. Also if you like any of these films, you get some nice new content about it, thus strengthening our great shared experience of life. Ok, we begin today with Sidney Lumet's (The Anderson Tapes 1971) I can tell you that at the very least it represents trippy early 70's filming very well. Next we review (Glass House 1972) where Captain Benjamin Franklin ‘Hawkeye' Pierce, finds himself in a very serious 70's prison movie. Onward cinephiles to (Oh Lucky Man 73) which according to Henry Rollins in his fun book, Get in the van is one of Sham 69 vocalists Jimmy Pursey's favorite films. We split a lil on this one, oh what fun. When researching wiki for the spelling of Jimmy's last name I noticed they once had a drummer called Danny fury that is NOT the same drummer as the Avengers Danny Furious, wow. Back to review list info with (Scott Joplin 1977) Here we have usually non period piece director Jeremy Kagan giving us a period piece about the greatest ragtime performer of all time. Sounded way worse than it was, though V said it didn't capture his life well enough. Would you like to know more? Second to last we have (Coma 1978) O.G. Janeway and the alligator boots guy from romancing the stone star in this good but barely sci fi thriller that we figure out is perhaps not as cool as just looking at the poster makes you think it is. It does of course make it one of the greatest movie posters of all time. Finally today yer decade under the influence crew will review (Hooper 1978). This one was fun to research, I had no idea how perfect it was for (RAD 1986) movie director Hal Needham to direct this film about stunt peeps. Jan Michael Vincent, the guy from boogie nights, and sybil drink and f shit up magically in this, enjoy. Thanks for listening.

Who was Jan Michael Vincent?  Sadly, most people would answer with things like "Airwolf", "drugs", "amputee", and other non-flattering, yet true, descriptions.  However, before all of that he was a talented, handsome actor who could command the screen and hold his own with Hollywood legends.  He was Brad Pitt before Brad Pitt, but then devolved into a "never was".  I am on a quest to remind the world of his artistry and greatness and maybe steal back some of the negative memories.  And while doing that I'll also chat about all of the famous sexy nurses movies of the 70s, The Hardy Boys books, the fates of Rick Dalton and Cliff Booth, and I make a very sloppy connection between Michael Myers and Jesus.  Yep...Michael Myers and Jesus.

Prodigal Son was conceived by Kove and writer-producer Don Handfield — who co-writes the series. Handfield is the author of hit comic series The Dark Age, The Source and The Rift. He is also co-creator and EP of History Channel's Knightfall, and producer of The Founder, staring Michael Keaton. Actor-writer Clay Adams penned the series alongside Handfield and is a voice talent behind animated series TMNT, Yu-Gi-Oh! and writer of Scout Comics' Red X-Mas. Producer Chris LeMole (Mudbound, Peanut Butter Falcon) also shares story credit.Pre-launch Page Link: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1546838856/prodigal-son-1Martin Kove was born on March 6, 1947 in Brooklyn, New York. Strong-featured, narrow-eyed actor who has portrayed a mixed bag of both good guys and bad guys. He first turned up on screen in several minor roles, and was noticed as the villainous Nero the Hero in the low-budget road race Death Race 2000 (1975), and then as Clem the sadistic rigger, breaking Jan-Michael Vincent's ribs in White Line Fever (1975). He cropped up on the television series Cagney & Lacey (1981) portraying honest Police Detective Isbecki, and then ended up on the wrong side of a rampaging Sylvester Stallone in Rambo: First Blood Part II (1985).Kove probably scored his greatest visibility to the public in the hugely successful The Karate Kid (1984) in which he played John Kreese, the head instructor of the Cobra Kai karate school. He reprised the role in the two sequels, The Karate Kid Part II (1986) and The Karate Kid Part III (1989). Kove has since kept consistently busy, primarily in the action-thriller film genre, and has notched up over 80 film appearances to date, as well as numerous television guest roles.

Reviews reviews reviews, hey ho, let's GO! That said I'm still not a Ramones fan, though I like about 2 songs, whatever. Love them or hate em, let's kick off another round of 70's movie reviews. Today's offering starts off with a 1970 made for TV movie which later did get a theatrical release titled (The Tribe). Here the dad from a Christmas story, hates that the marines are now taking draftee's. He also hates hippies, especially one played by Jan Michael Vincent. Set a course for zaniness here on the military base. So great to see Darren McGavin play a drill Sargent. Seems unlikely but I heart it very much. Lets move on to (Walkin g stick 1970). Here we have Samantha Eggar as Deborah a cool person who is used for crime by this asshat. I believe it's called a love con. Lots of 70's London in this and she figures out asshat in the end, oops spoiler. I can't really figure out how the whole spoiler thing fits into our lil pod, I do know that I'd like to assume you've seen it and wanna hear our take, but also we could be turning you on to some great films so I'll keep spoilers to a minimum. Let's advance now to level 3 with (11 Harrowhouse 1974) and can Candice Bergen, Charles Gordon, and James Mason, make this jewel heist film NOT dull as dishwater. See Ma, no spoilers, HA. Ok next up is (Green Eye's 1977) No spoilers but we love us some Paul Winfield, and this made for TV movie about a very sweet man with a cool mom, trying to do right and cope with what happened in nam, that I've been searching for forever and is now on you tube, is flipping amazing!!!! Also it deals with a very under talked subject in film, and that's our war orphans. Along comes another made for t.v. movie that is finally available on you tube, and that's (Perfect Gentlemen 1978). So much amazing stuff going into this one, Lauren flipping Bacall, Ruth Flippin Gordon, Sandy flipping Dennis, with a script by Nora flipping Ephron. It's quite a feat that this doesn't seem to exceed the sum of it's parts. Oops spoiler. It is good though, and you can always listen, if you want to know more. Finally today we have (Starting Over 1979) this is also a film that has a lot of awesome goin into it. Screenplay by Mary Tyler Moore and the Simpson's creator James Brooks, Murphy flipping brown, Jill Clayburgh, Charles Durning, Francis Sternhagen, the expert directing of Alan Pakula, and even Burt flipping Reynolds. Lets hear it folks. I think this one delivers, but I may sadly be alone in that assessment, but I'm writing this SO , it's the best and is loved by all. He he, I'm having a bit of fun today, thank you dear listers for your time, please tell your friends and or write us a review. Love us or hate us we'll take the feedback form, today only. Seriously though , thanks.

The Billy Picture: Vincent Gallo's Buffalo '66 On this week's episode of WatchThis W/RickRamos, Mr. Chavez & I sit down with an incredibly underseen and underappreciated independent film from 1998, Vincent Gallo's Buffalo '66. Some films are difficult to define . . . they are problematic in their narratives and politics. Vincent Gallo's directorial effort from 1998 is a film that few people have seen and which was - most likely - never intended for a mass audience. But there is great beauty in this film. There's an anger, strange character study, and sadness to this film. Featuring great performances lead by Gallo (as a recently paroled loser, struggling to impress . . . who knows!?!), Anjelica Huston, Ben Gazzarra, Mickey Rourke, Jan Michael Vincent, Kevin Corrigan, and a beautiful and brilliant Christina Ricci. This is certainly not a film for eveyone, but for those audiences that are fans of WatchThis, it certainly is a worthy investment of time and cinematic enjoyment. Take a listen and let us know what you think. Questions, Comments, Complaints, & Suggestions can be directed to gondoramos@yahoo.com. Our Continued Thanks.

Hello again film chums. Today we finish off a big batch of rare 70's gems, mostly. Please reach out if you want help acquiring any of them. First off we review the film adaptation of Kurt Vonnegut's (Happy birthday Wanda June 1971) Rod Steiger and Susan York star in yet another in a very long line of 70's movies based on plays. Also with this one as my English professor used to say “If it gets deep, start swimming.” Next we have (Sandcastles 1972) Which was a made for tv film that sadly sounds a lil more trippy than it is. It is weird though and does have Jan Michael Vincent, and Mariette Hartley from that one episode of Star Trek where Spock gets into primitivism. Travel with us now to (OZ 1976) later called 20th century oz. This is definitely trippy and quite fab n magical in bits. Features the whirlybird pilot in the road warrior. Next up is (A circle of children 1977). Jane Alexander stars as Mary who takes on the treatment of disabled children, bringing us along for the ride. Far from perfect but it does look right at it which was a definite positive step. Willis from different strokes is here, as well as Rachel Robert's as Helga. Movin right along to (Thieves 1977) Marlo Thomas and Charles Gordin, Star in this sadly out of print dark comedy directed by John Berry (Claudine- podcast coming very soon) Would you believe that this film is based off a play. Wow. Finally today we review (Before and after 1979) This is another made for tv film that gets a lot of once taboo stuff out there, so we can talk about it and deal. Here it's weight loss, anorexia, body image, shitty husbands etc. May be the first film to mention anorexia. Omg Betty White plays quite a sadist in this. stars Patty Duke, Barbara Feldon, Art Hindle, and is directed by Star Trek director Kim Friedman. Written by Hindi Brooks. Thanks for listening everyone.
