Jerry Kramer, Green Bay Packers Hall of Fame guard, joins the show today regarding his new book Run To Win--My Packers Life from Lombardi to Canton. Kramer is a 2x Super Bowl champion who appeared in the first two Super Bowls ever and was a member of several NFL Championship teams prior to that, all coached by the great Vince Lombardi (after whom the Super Bowl trophy is named). Wayne Monbleau, longtime host of Let's Talk About Jesus, also spends time with us, sharing about the origin of the program, several of the books he has written, and what he has learned about the Lord in 50+ years of walking with Him. LTAJ has been on the air with WFIL for 20 years and prior to that, WFIL's sister station AM 990 (then WZZD) since 1981. 3-21-2023 Passed Ball Show. John spends this show talking about the once proud Men's College Basketball programs at St. John's and Georgetown and whether they could return to prominence with the respective hires of Rick Pitino and Ed Cooley. John believes that it was those programs success in the 1980's that carried the Big East nationally, not the likes of Syracuse and Connecticut. After John makes it clear why Farleigh Dickenson should have not been in the NCAA Tournament. After giving them credit for their unprecedented victory over number one (1) seeded Purdue, John discusses what he believes are the biggest upsets in the history of sports. On "Saving Sports History!" John talks about Joe Louis, 106 fouls, Ron Tugnutt, Tommy Davis, Ducky Medwick, and Chuck Bednarik, among other historical sports topics.
2-11-2023 Passed Ball Show. John opens up this program by talking about the real football championship history of the Philadelphia Eagles and Kansas City Chiefs, not just in the “Super Bowl era.” John honors the Eagles NFL Championships in 1949, 1949, and 1960 while talking about greats like Steve Van Buren, Norm Van Brocklin, and Chuck Bednarik. John then talks about the 1962 AFL Champion Dallas Texans, led by Hall of Fame Coach Hank Stram and HOF QB Len Dawson. John then gets into his This Date in Sports History segment when he remembers Buster Douglas beating Mike Tyson, the NHL Players Association forming and the Philadelphia 76ers losing their 20th straight game. Finally, John gives his Super Bowl 57 prediction as he hopes for a competitive and entertaining game.

As we dive into our “Thoughtful Money” series, I wanted this series to contain unconventional conversations that challenge our money mindset and uncover the reasoning behind how we think of money. While many athletes, entertainers and celebrities are known for having access to a lot of money, it’s interesting how so many have fallen victim to bankruptcy and financial struggles. I believe that who we are with a dollar, is who we are with a million dollars. Unless we have the discipline and education to manage our money wisely, it can be very easy to revert back to toxic spending habits that serve temporary pleasures instead of strategically building a lifestyle that attracts and maintains wealth. Today’s guest is an athlete who excelled both on the gridiron and in the game of money. Former NFL player, Takeo Spikes was drafted in the first round (13th pick overall) by the Cincinnati Bengals in 1998. After a successful 15 year career in football, he became a two-time All-Pro, a two-time Pro Bowl selection and is one of only seven linebackers in league history with more than 200 starts while playing for the Bengals, Buffalo Bills, Philadelphia Eagles, San Francisco 49ers and San Diego Chargers. In preparation for life after football, Spikes began his broadcasting career with national appearances on television and radio and in December 2016, published his first book, Behind the Mask, a collection of intimate short stories about and photographs of some of the greatest linebackers to ever play in the NFL. His podcast of the same name, Behind the Mask, tells the REAL stories of some of your favorite players on and off the field, including Mike Singletary, Derrick Brooks, and the late Chuck Bednarik. In this episode, he shares his thoughtful money mindset and his amazing journey from the NFL to becoming an influential philanthropist who educates athletes and young men on how they can play the game and grow in wisdom and in wealth. Key discussion points from this episode include: Evolving in Purpose After The NFL - 8:36 Do What Comes Naturally To You - 13:24 Having An Intentional Money Mindset - 14:33 Split The Bill To Build Wealth Together- 18:36 Setting Parameters To Avoid Financial Guilt - 23:09 Have A Heart To Serve - 33:26 Behind The Mask - 40:15 This episode is brought to you by my new book, Redefine Wealth For Yourself: How To Stop Chasing Money and Finally Live Your Life’s Purpose. Through stories, principles, and practical exercises based on the Six Pillars of Wealth, this book serves as a guide to take you step by step through the process of creating a life of peace, purpose, and prosperity. If you’re tired of chasing money and ready to pursue your purpose, this holistic guide to wealth is for you. Purchase your copy today at RedefineWealthForYourself.com I'm Not Going Back Takeaways “What you put in is exactly what you’re going to get out.” - Takeo Spikes “I felt purpose in helping people.” - Takeo Spikes “When you serve people, you’ll be surprised what you get back in return.” - Takeo Spikes “Why wait on someone to do something for you when you can do it yourself.” - Takeo Spikes “Whatever you do, you can’t go back and you can’t go broke.” - Takeo Spikes “As much as I loved where I came from, I’m not going back because I have to go back.” “You have to be intentional and strategic about everything that you do.” - Takeo Spikes “The true definition of “Balling” or having a sustainable lifestyle is not what you can do while you’re getting paid at the moment, but how long you can do it after you leave the game.” - Takeo Spikes “The thought of me having a ferrari excites me more than having a ferrari.” - Takeo Spikes “You don’t owe anybody anything.” - Takeo Spikes “Everybody wants to eat and that's okay, but how can you make them sustainable so that they will be able to eat on their own without eating off of you.” - Takeo Spikes Without financial parameters, it never will be sustainable.” - Takeo Spikes “You can’t be afraid of letting go in order for it to come back.” - Takeo Spikes “Sometimes, to help people you have to stop helping them, because there’s a difference between a hand-up and a hand-out.” - Patrice Washington “Broke + Broke = Broke” - Takeo Spikes “We can never become the person we’re destined to be if we don’t understand the principle of serving.” - Takeo Spikes “In life you work for two types of checks: emotional and physical.” - Takeo Spikes “When you’re sick and tired of being sick and tired, that’s when true change is going to come.” - Takeo Spikes “It’s not about what happens to me, but how I respond.” - Takeo Spikes “You cannot weaponize what I’m willing to tell.” - Patrice Washington “It’s not if adversity hits, it’s when it’s going to hit.” - Takeo Spikes “I’m relentless. There is nothing you can do that is going to stop me.” - Takeo Spikes “If we don’t tell our stories in any form or medium, somebody will tell it for us and they won’t always get it right.” - Patrice Washington Redefining Wealth Rapid Wisdom Questions And with that, let’s dig into Takeo’s responses to our Redefining Wealth Rapid Wisdom Questions. Define Success: “I define success not by what happens to you, but by how you respond.” Define Wealth in 3 Words or Less: “Hustle. Desire. Relentless” One Book that Has Redefined How You See Wealth: Good Company by Arthur M. Blank Fill-in the Blanks … “My name is ___ and the truth about wealth is ___”: “My name is Takeo Spikes and the truth about wealth is receiving clarity: hearing what you need to hear versus receiving what we want to hear. Originally we had thought of doing a Pro Bowl/Superbowl episode. Given the death of Kobe Bryant and eight others, we decided to switch it up and dedicate this episode to Kobe. We had no notes and nothing here was scripted, just raw unadulterated emotion coming from both of us. Kobe, even though he never played for a Philadelphia sports team, we considered him family. We clumped him with other Philadelphia sports legends; Brian Dawkins, Julius Erving, Donovan Mcnabb, Joe Frazier, Chuck Bednarik, Wilt Chamberlain, Ron Jaworski, and Randall Cunningham among others. It hit the city of Philadelphia and Kobe fans alike immensely hard. It was shocking. It's a harsh reminder just how fragile life is and how quickly someone can leave this world. Kobe did amazing things as a player and was the Michael Jordan of this generation that missed out on watching Jordan in his early years. You could consider that Kobe was one of the biggest reasons that the NBA recovered after Jordan retired. His reach was far and wide. Controversial, possibly, but you can't deny how hard Kobe worked, and how he completely switched himself up after basketball and became a mentor to so many, and tried to become the best father and husband he could be. That's something anyone can respect. To Vanessa Bryant and all the families affected, we are so very sorry. We are praying for you all in this terrible time. God Bless. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/birdsoverboys-podcast/message

Many fans store a vast collection of sports images in their brains. With just a moment’s glance at a picture, even a slice of the picture, they can recognize the athletes, the season, the game, the particular play that the photographer captured. I experienced this recently when one of my Facebook friends posted a new cover photo on his profile page, a classic shot from the golden age of American football. Cropped down to fit on the page, only the upper corner of the original black-and-white photo was visible, showing a player in shoulder pads and helmet, looking down and raising his right fist, as if to punch downward. I didn’t need to see the rest of the picture. I knew it immediately: the photograph of Philadelphia Eagles linebacker Chuck Bednarik after he had just put a punishing hit on the New York Giants’ Frank Gifford in a game at Yankee Stadium. Even though the photo had been taken eight years before I was born, and featured two teams–the Eagles and Giants–for which I have no affection, the image of this one play is lodged in my anterior cingulate cortex, able to be recalled in an instant. Our experience of sport is mediated through images. Even when we have a ticket to the stadium, we spend more time watching the action on the giant screen than straining to see the distant figures on the field. But in the vast blizzard of images–the online galleries, the double-page spreads, the video highlights–do any frames qualify as art? Are there any sports photos that deserve a place in a museum, alongside, say, a Richard Avedon portrait or an Andy Warhol series? David Little thinks so. The head of the photography department at the Minneapolis Institute of Arts and a lifelong sports fan, David organized the 2012 exhibition “The Sports Show.” The exhibition featured over 200 items, including photographs by Avedon and Warhol, the 1927 Buster Keaton film “College,” and the 2006 documentary “Zidane: A 21st Century Portrait.” Over 150 of the images are reproduced in the exhibition catalogue The Sports Show: Athletics as Image and Spectacle (University of Minnesota Press, 2012), making the book an absorbing treasury of sports photography. In our interview, David describes some of those images, explaining what makes them compelling, beautiful, and original–in short, works of art. And we ask if it still possible to recognize these qualities in a sports photograph, in an age of jumbo screens and Instagram. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
