The May 17, 1976 issue of Sports Illustrated is the perfect time capsule for Past Our Prime, capturing the sports world exactly 50 years ago through unforgettable stories and personalities. Headlined by Julius Erving on the cover, the issue showcased “Dr. J” at the peak of his ABA brilliance with the New York Nets as the league headed towards extinction and its historic merger with the NBA. But the magazine also stretched far beyond basketball, with features on the Flyers Reggie Leach's playoff explosion, Björn Borg's rivalry with Guillermo Vilas, baseball quirks, golf drama, and even Japanese baseball culture. It's exactly the kind of rich, entertaining snapshot of sports history that we love revisiting each week. On this week's episode of Past Our Prime, we jumped into that May 17, 1976 issue with author Michael MacCambridge who joined us to discuss his acclaimed book The Franchise: A History of Sports Illustrated Magazine. He took us behind the scenes of how SI rose from near failure in the 1950s to become the gold standard of sports journalism, blending deep reporting, cultural insight, and unforgettable storytelling. MacCambridge explored the magazine's internal battles, larger-than-life personalities, and its profound influence on how America viewed sports for decades. His book is both a love letter and a clear-eyed history of one of the most important publications of the 20th century. MacCambridge tells us how as a child in 1976, his favorite player was Dr. J. Despite the fact he had never seen him play. Not in person. Not on TV. Only through the beautiful shots and words of SI. MacCambridge recalls how SI was one of the first magazines to implement color phots and how Henry Luce and Andre Andre Laguerre took an idea and turned it into a cultural phenomenon. He tells us how Sports Illustrated lost money its first 10 years in business before they started to turn the corner.  He compares being on the cover of SI to a musician being on the cover of Rolling Stone and he tells us how “a case can be made Julius Erving was the last truly mythic figure in American sports” MacCambridsge is a history professor and his subject is Sports Illustrated and he's teaching a class this week on Past Our Prime. Nonfiction author extraordinaire Luke Epplin joins the pod this week to unpack the intertwined legacies of basketball legends Julius Erving and Moses Malone, as chronicled in his acclaimed new book, "Moses and the Doctor: Two Men, One Championship, and the Birth of Modern Basketball." What unfolds is more than a dual biography — it's a portrait of a transformational era when professional basketball's future hung in the balance. Epplin traces both players back to their early professional years, including their formative time in the upstart American Basketball Association. There, Erving's aerial artistry helped legitimize a bold, improvisational style of play, while Malone's relentless presence in the paint established a new model of dominance — built on effort, positioning, and physical control. Together, those contrasting identities shaped their transition to the NBA: Erving, the ever-visible icon and cultural ambassador; Malone, the quiet, force-of-nature interior anchor. Their partnership culminated in the Philadelphia 76ers' historic 1983 championship run — a moment that represented the perfect blend of style and substance, and altered the trajectory of the modern game. + + +   SUPPORT THE SHOW: Buy Us a Coffee: https://ko-fi.com/goodseatsstillavailable The "Good Seats" Store: http://tee.pub/lic/RdiDZzQeHSY BUY THE BOOKS:  "Moses and the Doctor: Two Men, One Championship, and the Birth of Modern Basketball": https://amzn.to/4lVpe0Z SPONSOR THANKS:  Royal Retros (10% off promo code: SEATS): https://www.503-sports.com?aff=2 Old School Shirts.com (10% off promo code: GOODSEATS): https://oldschoolshirts.com/goodseats FIND AND FOLLOW: Linktree: https://linktr.ee/GoodSeatsStillAvailable Web: https://goodseatsstillavailable.com/ Bluesky: https://bsky.app/profile/goodseatsstillavailable.com X/Twitter: https://twitter.com/GoodSeatsStill YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@goodseatsstillavailable Threads: https://www.threads.net/@goodseatsstillavailable Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/goodseatsstillavailable/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/GoodSeatsStillAvailable/ LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/good-seats-still-available/

This week on the podcast, I'm recommending four sports movies from the 1970s. These aren't the usual titles you hear brought up. Some are a bit strange, some are just overlooked. All of them are worth checking out.Slap Shot (1977)Directed by George Roy Hill, who also did The Sting and Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. Paul Newman plays the player-coach of a struggling minor league hockey team. The film is known for its rough humor and violence on the ice. It was written by Nancy Dowd, based on her brother's experience in the minors. The Hanson Brothers, who steal most of their scenes, were played by real hockey players. The film didn't do well at first but built a strong following over the years. The Fish That Saved Pittsburgh (1979)This one is about astrology and basketball. A Pittsburgh team becomes good after aligning its players' zodiac signs. It stars Julius Erving, who was still playing in the NBA at the time. The movie was shot in actual basketball arenas and features real NBA footage. The soundtrack was put together by Thom Bell, known for his work with The Spinners and The Stylistics. It's not a typical sports movie, and it's not serious, but that's part of the appeal. One on One (1977) Robbie Benson stars as a small-town high school basketball player who gets a scholarship to a big college. Benson co-wrote the script. The film was directed by Lamont Johnson, who worked mostly in television but had a few feature films. The music is by Seals and Crofts. It's more grounded than the other films in this group. The basketball scenes are decent, and the story focuses on the pressure college athletes face. The World's Greatest Athlete (1973) A Disney comedy with John Amos and Tim Conway. They go to Africa to find a new track star and bring back a Tarzan-type athlete played by Jan-Michael Vincent. Vincent did some of his own stunts, including a few track scenes. The film mixes broad humor with some light sports moments. It's not realistic, and it wasn't supposed to be. Worth a look if you want something lighter. All four of these were made during a time when studios were trying different things with sports movies. None of them are exactly like the others. If you're looking for something off the usual path, any of these would work. This is probably the first in a series of episodes I will eventually do about sports movies from this decade, I hope you enjoy them. Thanks for reading Video Store Podcast! Strap in and try to keep up, as we attempt to follow the peripatetic 58-year journey of one of the NBA's most wandering franchises - with New York-area sports beat reporter Rick Laughland ("A History of the Nets: From Teaneck to Brooklyn"). Today's Brooklyn Nets club began its life in 1967 as the New Jersey Americans - a charter member of the American Basketball Association, playing at the Teaneck Armory.  A year later, they moved to Long Island (LI Arena, then Island Garden, then Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum) to become the New York Nets, winning two ABA championships (1974, 1976) behind superstar Julius Erving.  Absorbed into the NBA in 1976, the team struggled financially and was forced to sell Erving, leading to early-season struggles. In 1977, they relocated to the Garden State as the New Jersey Nets, playing at Rutgers Athletic Center (now Jersey Mike's Arena) before moving to Brendan Byrne (aka Meadowlands) Arena in 1981.   After almost becoming the "Swamp Dragons" in 1994, the early 2000s saw breakthrough success with Jason Kidd, Kenyon Martin, and Richard Jefferson - making back-to-back NBA Finals runs in 2002 and 2003.  Before a brief move to Newark's Prudential Center (2010–12), the team relocated to Brooklyn's purpose-built Barclays Center, with a complete franchise name, logo and color-scheme rebrand.  Initially building around Deron Williams, they later pursued star power with Kevin Garnett and Paul Pierce, followed by Kevin Durant, Kyrie Irving, and James Harden in 2019–2021. Still bereft of an elusive NBA title, will the Nets continue to ply their trade in Brooklyn - or will they eventually return to their nomadic ways? + + +    SUPPORT THE SHOW: Buy Us a Coffee: https://ko-fi.com/goodseatsstillavailable "Good Seats" Merch: https://www.teepublic.com/?ref_id=35106 SPONSOR THANKS (AND SUPPORT THE SHOW!): Old School Shirts.com (10% off promo code: GOODSEATS) https://oldschoolshirts.com/goodseats Royal Retros (10% off promo code: SEATS): https://www.503-sports.com?aff=2   BUY THE BOOK (AND SUPPORT THE SHOW!): " A History of the Nets: From Teaneck to Brooklyn": https://amzn.to/41oxSev FIND AND FOLLOW: Website: https://goodseatsstillavailable.com/ Bluesky: https://bsky.app/profile/goodseatsstillavailable.com X/Twitter: https://twitter.com/GoodSeatsStill YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@goodseatsstillavailable Threads: https://www.threads.net/@goodseatsstillavailable Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/goodseatsstillavailable/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/GoodSeatsStillAvailable/

Julius Erving, better know as Dr. J, was one of the most entertaining players of all time. He spent his first five seasons of his pro career in the ABA. Unfortunately, there is painfully little video of his time in that league. Stories about his exploits grew into mythical status because there was no video to prove otherwise. Some claimed that he dunked the ball from the 3-point line. The stories began to grow out of control until he joined the NBA and people could see how good he really was. And he was indeed very good.CREDITSRick Loayza: Head researcher, writer, and voiceJacob Loayza: Editor, producer, and publisher MUSIC"Disco Funk" by Jam Morgan"Horizons" by Roa SPORTS HISTORY NETWORKsportshistorynetwork.comsportshistorynetwork.com/podcasts/basketball-history-101/ FACEBOOKm.facebook.com/Basketball-History-101-103801581493027/ BUSINESS CONTACTbballhistory101@gmail.com

The Golden State Warriors and Philadelphia 76ers faced off on November 25, 1977, at The Spectrum in Philadelphia. At this point in the season, the Warriors (entering at 9-9) were aiming to stabilize their campaign under head coach Al Attles, driven by veteran stars Rick Barry and Phil Smith. Meanwhile, the 76ers (entering at 12-5), coached by Gene Shue, were led by the dynamic Julius Erving and George McGinnis, both of whom were vital in establishing the team as contenders in the Eastern Conference. The 76ers were riding high on momentum and were already seen as a major threat in the league, while the Warriors were looking for consistency amidst a competitive Western Conference landscape. The game was a high-scoring and tightly contested affair, with both teams showcasing their offensive firepower. Philadelphia jumped to an early lead, outscoring Golden State 32-26 in the first quarter, thanks to a strong performance from McGinnis, who would finish with 34 points and 20 rebounds. Julius Erving added 28 points, asserting his all-around dominance. Golden State, however, kept the game close with Phil Smith scoring a team-high 30 points and Rickey Green adding an efficient 22 points off the bench. The Warriors mounted a late comeback, forcing the game into overtime after a balanced scoring effort in the fourth quarter, but Philadelphia's composure in the extra period sealed the win. With the victory, the 76ers improved to 13-5, solidifying their position as Eastern Conference frontrunners in a season that would see them finish second in the Atlantic Division and eventually reach the NBA Finals. The Warriors, dropping to 9-10, continued their uneven season but showed promise in players like Smith and Green. For Philadelphia, this game was another step toward establishing themselves as one of the league's elite teams of the era.philadelphi76ers #goldenstatewarriors #juliuserving #georgemcginnis #rickbarry #philsmith #rickeygreen #nbahistory #1977season
