65. The Amazing Emu... Jim Kern

Past Our Prime

1975 was a banner year for Rookies in Major League Baseball. Fred Lynn broke onto the scene in Boston and won Rookie of the Year and MVP… the first player ever to do that. And in the National League, John, “The Count” Montefusco took home the honors of National League Rookie of the Year. The Giants hurler narrowly beat out The Kid, Gary Carter, who went on to have a Hall of Fame career as a catcher. The only other player to get a vote for American League Rookie of the Year was Lynn's teammate, a future Hall of Famer himself, Jim Rice who had a fantastic freshman year. The 3rd Hall of Famer in that rookie class was a pitcher in Cleveland by the name of Dennis Eckersley. But he wasn't the only young stud on that staff… Enter The Amazing Emu… Jim Kern.  A non-drafted pitcher out of Midland, Michigan, Kern didn't rise quickly through the minors and took a detour when he joined the marines in 1969. After a year of serving and 5 more in the reserves, Kern's baseball career started to take off and after a brief callus to the bigs in '74, he came up for good in '75. As a starter he had inconsistent success but with Frank Robinson as his manager, he converted to a receiver in 1976 and a star was born. One of the hardest throwers in the game, Kern took to his new role immediately, winning 10 games and saving 15 with an ERA of 2.37 over 117 innings. He was an American League All-Star the next three seasons culminating in 1979 when he won 13 games out of the pen and saved another 29 while amassing 143 innings with an ERA of 1.57. A season for the ages for the 6'5 flamethrower. Unfortunately injuries plagued Kern for much of the rest of his career. He bounced around the league and other than a resurgence in 1982 for a bad Reds team, he never was as dominant as he was during that 4-year stretch from 1976-79… On the Past Our Prime podcast, Kern tells us about his journey from being undrafted out of high school, to the marines to a 3-time All-Star reliever from 1977 to 1979. He tells us about his days in Cleveland that included playing for the first black manager in baseball history, Hall of Famer Frank Robinson and being on the same pitching staff as another Hall of Famer, Dennis Eckersley. Kern speaks fondly of many teammates including Gaylord Perry, Pat Dobson, Sparky Lyle and Boog Powell who taught this “dumbass rookie” as much about being a pitcher as anyone he ever came across. And this baseball character tells us about the best prank he ever took part in, and how Buddy Bell got his revenge! It's a bunch of laughs with one of the funniest relief pitchers of the late 70's who could throw the ball about as hard as anyone for a brief, yet electric time in Cleveland and Texas. In this episode, we also remember the career of Hall of Fame slugger Jim Rice and his Red Sox and All-Star teammate Tony Armas. We take a dive into Howard Cosell, scratching only the surface of this complicated, iconic broadcasting figure. Dwayne Murphy, Randall "Tex" Cobb, the Jane Fonda Workout, and a Stroh's Beer commercial with some racial stereotypes that didn't age well also get our attention in this one.

1978 Game AL East Playoff Monday October 2nd, 1978 @ Fenway Park Boston, MA After 162 games played, the bitter rivals of the northeast find themselves deadlocked for the division crown, each sporting identical 99-63 records. The entire season comes down to just one game at Fenway Park, and it's gonna be a great one. It looked like it was going to be a banner year for the Red Sox, with Jim Rice playing like an MVP, Dennis Eckersley winning 20 games, and a whole host of spectacular performances. But like the previous season, the division lead began slipping away. They were up 14 games on the Yankees in mid-July, but that was cut to just 7 games by the end of August. And after a four game sweep dubbed “The Boston Massacre” in early September, the Yankees had caught the Sox.  The downward spiral continued in Beantown, but a furious rally of eight straight wins to close the season has forced a playoff against the Yanks. Having been forced to use their best starters (Eckersley and Luis Tiant), manager Don Zimmer will turn to an experienced, post-season tested veteran, Mike Torrez (16 - 12 3.92 ERA 243 IP). The big righty was instrumental for New York's World Series run in 1977, but he has scuffled in the stretch run, losing 6 of his last 7 decisions. They'll need him to recapture his form if they hope to advance to the ALCS. The 1977 season was tumultuous for the New York Yankees, but it culminated in a World Series and a return of nearly everyone who contributed to that greatness. But a second go-round for this group was filled with turmoil once again, as the Yankees struggled out of the gate. This time, there was too much trouble on and off the field, and it cost Billy Martin his job. They were just 52 - 42 with Martin at the helm, but once again caught fire (47 - 20) in the second half under Bob Lemon's stewardship. Reggie Jackson, Thurman Munson, Graig Nettles were excellent once again. Goose Gossage was a new weapon out of the pen, and Catfish Hunter had a great rebound. The story of this season, however, was the ascendance of their young lefty, Ron Guidry. The fireballer ran roughshod through the entire American League (24 - 3 1.72 ERA 267 IP), putting together one of the most dominant modern pitching seasons in baseball history. He will get the ball with the season on the line, and there's no other pitcher in the league you'd rather have. July 20, 1986. Saint Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands. 66-year old Jim Rice phones his daughter to let her know that he will be traveling to California to undergo shoulder surgery the following week, but he never arrives and no one ever hears from him again. Jim's common-law wife, Astarte Davis-Rice, initially claims that he took off to Australia with another woman, but evidence soon emerges that Astarte has committed fraud to seize control of Jim's estate. Astarte eventually winds up serving prison time for these offenses, but while the authorities suspect that she killed Jim and disposed of his body, there is not enough evidence to file murder charges and no trace of him is ever found. April 7, 1984. Golden, Colorado. The body of 29-year old Mark Groezinger is found inside his parked car on Lookout Mountain and he has been shot several times with a .38-caliber weapon. Mark's wife, Judy Groezinger, comes under suspicion once investigators discover that she purchased a .38 in the days prior to the murder and stands to benefit from a substantial life insurance policy on her husband. Even though there are a number of discrepancies in Judy's story and circumstantial evidence pointing to the involvement of multiple conspirators in a murder-for-hire plot, no one is ever charged with killing Mark. On this week's episode of “The Trail Went Cold”, we explore two cold cases featured on “Unsolved Mysteries” in which a male victim was suspected of being murdered by his spouse. December 26th Show Notes December 26, 1919 —  Boston Red Sox owner Harry Frazee makes a secret agreement to sell Babe Ruth to the New York Yankees for $100,000 (one-fourth cash, plus $25,000 a year at 6 percent) plus guaranteeing a $300,000 loan with Fenway Park as collateral. The transaction will be announced publicly in one week. December 26, 2005 — The Associated Press reports that baseball took a lot of shots in 2005 from politicians, commentators and players themselves as the sport struggled with steroids. MLB went from no drug policy in 2002 to anonymous testing in 2003, to counseling for positive tests in 2004, to a dozen 10-day suspensions this year. Starting next year, an initial positive test will result in a 50-game suspension, and players will be tested for amphetamines for the first time, with penalties for a second positive result. MLB took similar shots in 1973, many people don't realize this, but they were on the hot seat by the Staggers Committee that found steroid and amphetamine use in baseball was alarming in November of 1973. Bowie Kuhn was there and testified under oath along with Bud Selig. They did vow to clean up the game and congress let them off easy and never reviled the names of the players, unlike 2003. Tom House would later tell folks that 6 of 8 players were using steroids and his famous line was we never felt we lost, we were out-milligrammed.  Born: December 26, 1954 in Mobile, AL. Defying critics who said he was too small and would never hit enough to stay in the big leagues, Ozzie Smith soared through the infield with his acrobatic moves, redefining the role of shortstop. He won 13 consecutive Gold Gloves and set a major league record for assists by a shortstop. Dealt to the St. Louis Cardinals early in his career, Smith became one of the most popular players in franchise history. A switch-hitter, Ozzie blasted one of his few home runs from the left side of the plate to win the 1985 National League pennant. He was elected to the Hall of Fame in 2002, his first year of eligibility. Died: December 26, 2013 in Baltimore, MD An eight-time Gold Glove Award winner, Paul Blair was the best defensive center fielder in the American League in the late 1960s and early 1970s. With uncanny instincts and great speed, Blair positioned himself perfectly, often gliding into shallow center to snare would-be singles. He had several great moments in the postseason, including a game-winning homer in Game 3 of the 1966 World Series, and a leaping catch the next day to prevent a home run. In 1970, Blair was hit in the cheek, under his left eye, by a fastball from Ken Tatum of the Angels. It shattered about four different bones in his face and he underwent surgery. He missed 21 games but rebounded to play another 10 seasons. Contrary to some who say he was never quite the same hitter, Blair claimed he was unaffected by the incident. He never saw Tatum's pitch, so, Blair said “I was never haunted by images of the ball hitting me.” On January 20, 1977, Blair was traded to the New York Yankees. On June 18 of that year in a nationally televised game against the Boston Red Sox at Fenway Park, he was involved—though not directly—in one of the most bizarre scenes in baseball history. Yankee manager Billy Martin took right fielder Reggie Jackson out of the game and replaced him with Blair after Jackson had misplayed Jim Rice's fly ball for a double. As the cameras watched, Jackson and Martin nearly came to blows. After winning World Series titles with the Yankees in 1977 and 1978, Blair was released early in the 1979 season. He earned four World Series rings, two with the Orioles and two with the Yankees. December 26, 1947 – Future Hall of Famer Carlton Fisk is born in Bellows Falls, Vermont. A unanimous Rookie of the Year selection in 1972, when he would win his only gold glove, the studious Carlton Fisk was at times the best catcher in the American League during the 1970s and 1980s. He hit one of the most dramatic home runs in postseason history, winning Game 6 of the 1975 World Series for the Red Sox. Fisk was one of the most interesting characters of his era. He marched to the beat of his own drum. While with the Red Sox, he earned a reputation as a tough competitor and clubhouse lawyer. In both Boston and Chicago, he clashed with his GM and owners, and he was involved in the collusion case against baseball in the late 1980s. In that case, free agents like Fisk and Kirk Gibson charged that owners had conspired to limit free-agent movement. The players won in a slam dunk and Fisk emerged even more bitter and suspicious. As a player, Fisk walked like an 85-year-old man, even when he was in his twenties. He was very concerned with his appearance, and he took as much time as any batter in preparing to hit. He once walked so slow to the mound to talk to his pitcher, that Rangers' manager Bobby Valentine wondered if he was "paid by the hour." Fisk considered himself a protector of the game's honor. On numerous occasions, he challenged teammates for failing to play the game properly or (worst of all) failing to hustle. In a celebrated incident, he nearly came to blows with the entire New York team after he admonished Yankee rookie Deion Sanders for failing to run out a routine grounder. Shocked by the confrontation, Sanders later apologized for his actions. At the end of his career, Fisk had proved most of his critics and skeptics wrong, playing more games than any other catcher in baseball history, despite injuries (many of them before the age of 30), having to fight for playing time, and a tall frame that took abuse. Over 24 seasons, his back and knees held up well and he caught his last game at the age of 45. He was the Nolan Ryan of the catching profession. With the White Sox, he set single-season and career records for homers by a catcher, as well as games caught in a career. He was elected to the Hall of Fame in 2000.
