Die Biennale in Venedig wird in diesem Jahr von politischen Kontroversen rund um die Teilnahme Russlands und Israels überschattet – Debatten über Boykotte, Proteste und den Rücktritt der Jury bestimmten den Auftakt der Kunstschau. Dennoch sei die Kunst weiterhin präsent, sagt Monopol-Chefredakteurin Elke Buhr, die selbst vor Ort ist, im Gespräch mit SWR KULTUR: „Die Kunst ist da und die Kunst kann auch nicht zerstört werden, selbst nicht durch so eine Politisierung.“ Besonders viel Aufmerksamkeit zog am Eröffnungstag der österreichische Pavillon mit der Performance-Künstlerin Florentina Holzinger auf sich, deren spektakuläre Inszenierung laut Buhr „eine tolle Metapher“ für das Überleben in einer bröckelnden Welt sei. Auch der deutsche Pavillon mit Arbeiten von Tsung Thieu und Henrike Naumann überzeugte durch seine Auseinandersetzung mit deutscher Geschichte und Migration. Über die Beiträge aus Russland und Israel urteilte Buhr dagegen kritisch: „Man merkt eben, dass in solchen Situationen offensichtlich gute Kunst irgendwie nicht gelingt.“
