(To be read in a dramatic voice) No one would have believed... ... that a tale so vast- of death, alien destruction, heat rays, Phil Lynott, and the Moody Blues- could be told through orchestral prog rock, synths, and frying pans. Yet today, Frizz and Bob pop open Quest's End Paladin Whiskey & Ardbeg Uigedal Scotch to bring you PART ONE of Jeff Wayne's Musical Version of The War of the Worlds- a British sci-fi marvel that, for decades, has been misunderstood and mostly unseen by the American eye. In this first chapter, we set the stage: The backstory. The architects of the sound. The players of this curious sonic war. The chances of you missing this are a million to one, they said. Yet, here you are. Next week... the invasion begins.
In this episode, music legend Huey Lewis joins Tim and Troy Green for a wide-ranging conversation about life, loss, fame, and finding joy after adversity. Huey reflects on his early years—hitchhiking through Europe with a harmonica, busking on the streets, and discovering his voice in London's punk scene. He shares powerful memories of mentors like Phil Lynott, the lessons he learned from Robert Altman, and the unforgettable night recording We Are the World with Michael Jackson, Stevie Wonder, and others. Huey also opens up about his profound hearing loss and the spiritual peace he's found in nature, fishing, and family. With characteristic humility and humor, he talks about his Broadway-bound musical, the impact of Back to the Future, and why sometimes the setbacks are what set you free. This isn't just a trip through 80s nostalgia—it's a story about staying grounded when the world goes wild, and why the journey matters more than the spotlight. Escuchar audio

Send us a textOn this week's episode, we take a listen to another Listener's Pick: Thin Lizzy's sixth studio album, Jailbreak from 1976. It took some time, but by the time they recorded Jailbreak, Thin Lizzy's had figured out their formula and Jailbreak became their breakout LP. Showcasing the tuneful songs of Phil Lynott and the expert twin guitar interplay of Scott Gorman and Brian Robertson, the album is the ultimate combination or power and melody.Lyrically, Lynott tapped into mythos of both Irish folklore and the American west to create his own version of story songs written by the likes of Bruce Springsteen and Van Morrison. Musically, Jailbreak is an absolute blast to listen to, providing future inspiration for both punk bands and bands of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal. Visit us at www.tappingvinyl.com.

I am extremely excited that I have an interview with a true keyboard legend for you today: MARK STANWAY has played for British Rock Band MAGNUM from 1980 to 2016 and has seen it all: Working with star producers like Keith Olsen, Queen's Roger Taylor and Jeff Glixman, world tours with giant stage sets (including the feeling of being pulled up with your keyboard setup like 15 feet in the air), seeing the technology evolve from the times of the Mellotron up to the rise of modern Sampling technology.MARK STANWAY has also worked with Phil Lynott, forming "Grand Slam", has worked with Robert Plant in the "Honeydrippers" and has been in the Lineup of bands like "Stampede" and "M3 Classic Whitesnake". Together with former Magnum members and friends Mark Stanway now plays with his own outfit "Kingdom Of Madness".But his years in Magnum, playing on groundbreaking records like "Chase The Dragon", "On A Storyteller's Night", "Wings of Heaven" and "Goodnight L.A.", which all have been international mega sellers, are probably the defining part of his almost 50 year career as a pro musician.I am extremely honored and proud to be able to bring you this interview with one of the groundbreaking idols of Rock keyboard playing - a true time travel (with Synthesizers!).
What made the band Thin Lizzy different from your standard 1970s rock and punk? Crime, that's what. The criminals who populated Phil Lynott's mother's bar and the stories they told that influenced the songs Phil wrote. That and a harmonized guitar assault. Who is your favorite Irish band? Why? It is with heavy hearts that we deliver this week's episode honoring the passing of a guitar hero giant who also happened to be an awesome singer and songwriter: John Sykes. He was a guitarist deserving of the title guitar god who rarely got mentioned in the same circles as the Satches, Vais, Rhodes, and Van Halens. Most known for his brief stint in Thin Lizzy at the end of their career and as a brief member of Whitesnake. He should have been a household for playing on the Whitesnake 87 album that sold 25M records worldwide, but he was fired before it came out. Kevin's a huge fan of Blue Murder, so we will focus on that band and some of the lesser-known projects he was involved in while also paying homage to his mainstream successes. New to InObscuria? Typically, what we do is exhume obscure Rock n' Punk n' Metal in one of 3 categories: the Lost, the Forgotten, or the Should Have Beens. Rest In Peace John. Your pure musicality and amazing songs will live forever in our hearts!Songs this week include:Blue Murder – “We All Fall Down” from Nothin' But Trouble (1993)Streetfighter – “She's No Angel” from Lightnin' To The Nations: NWOBHM 25th Anniversary Collection (2005)Tygers Of Pan Tang – “Blackjack” from Spellbound (1981)John Sykes – “Pride And Joy” from Crossfire: A Salute To Stevie Ray (1996)Derek Sherinian – “God Of War” from Mythology (2004)Thin Lizzy – “Cowboy Song” from One Night Only (2000)John Sykes – “Cautionary Warning” from 20th Century (1997)Blue Murder – “Still Of The Night” from Screaming Blue Murder: Dedicated To Phil Lynott (1994)Blue Murder – “Jelly Roll” from Screaming Blue Murder: Dedicated To Phil Lynott (1994)Please subscribe everywhere that you listen to podcasts!Visit us: https://inobscuria.com/https://www.facebook.com/InObscuriahttps://twitter.com/inobscuriahttps://www.instagram.com/inobscuria/Buy cool stuff with our logo on it!: https://www.redbubble.com/people/InObscuria?asc=uIf you'd like to check out Kevin's band THE SWEAR, take a listen on all streaming services or pick up a digital copy of their latest release here: https://theswear.bandcamp.com/If you want to hear Robert and Kevin's band from the late 90s – early 00s BIG JACK PNEUMATIC, check it out here: https://bigjackpnuematic.bandcamp.com/Check out Robert's amazing fire sculptures and metal workings here: http://flamewerx.com/
Rockshow episode 210 The Story of Phil Lynott and Thin LizzyPhilip Parris Lynott, born on August 20, 1949, in West Bromwich, England, and raised in Dublin, Ireland, was the charismatic frontman, bassist, and primary songwriter of Thin Lizzy—one of the most influential rock bands of the 1970s and early 80s. Known for his poetic lyrics, distinctive voice, and commanding stage presence, Lynott played a crucial role in shaping the band's signature sound, blending hard rock with Celtic influences and storytelling. The Formation of Thin Lizzy (1969-1972)Lynott formed Thin Lizzy in Dublin in 1969, along with drummer Brian Downey, guitarist Eric Bell, and organist Eric Wrixon (who left shortly after). The band was named after a character from a comic book (The Dandy's “Tin Lizzie”). They signed with Decca Records and released their self-titled debut album in 1971, but mainstream success eluded them at first.Their breakthrough came in 1972 with their reworking of the traditional Irish folk song “Whiskey in the Jar,” which became a major hit in Ireland and the UK. However, after their next few albums underperformed, Eric Bell left the band, leading to a major lineup change that would define their classic sound. The Classic Thin Lizzy Lineup (1974-1980)After Bell's departure, Thin Lizzy transitioned into a twin-guitar rock powerhouse. Lynott recruited Scott Gorham and Brian Robertson, forming the band's legendary dual-guitar attack. Their first major success in this era came with “The Boys Are Back in Town” (1976) from the Jailbreak album, which remains their most famous song.Notable Albums & Songs:•Jailbreak (1976) – “The Boys Are Back in Town,” “Jailbreak” •Johnny the Fox (1976) – “Don't Believe a Word” •Bad Reputation (1977) – “Dancing in the Moonlight,” “Bad Reputation”•Live and Dangerous (1978) – Regarded as one of the greatest live rock albums of all time•Black Rose: A Rock Legend (1979) – “Do Anything You Want To,” “Waiting for an Alibi,” “Black Rose”Thin Lizzy became known for their explosive live performances, poetic lyrics, and blending of hard rock with Irish storytelling. However, internal tensions, particularly with Brian Robertson's unreliability, led to lineup changes. The Later Years & Decline (1980-1983)Thin Lizzy disbanded in 1983 after a farewell tour, marking the end of an era.Phil Lynott's Solo Career & Tragic DeathAfter Thin Lizzy, Lynott pursued a solo career, releasing two albums:•Solo in Soho (1980) – “King's Call,” “Dear Miss Lonelyhearts”•The Philip Lynott Album (1982) He also collaborated with musicians like Gary Moore (“Out in the Fields”) and worked on various projects. However, his drug addiction worsened, and in late 1985, he collapsed due to complications from heroin and alcohol abuse.Phil Lynott passed away on January 4, 1986, at the age of 36.Thin Lizzy's LegacyDespite Lynott's passing, Thin Lizzy's influence remains strong. Various members have carried on the band's music, with Scott Gorham leading tribute tours. Lynott's lyrical storytelling, stage presence, and fusion of Celtic themes with hard rock inspired countless musicians, including Metallica, Iron Maiden, and U2.Today, Lynott is celebrated as Ireland's first great rock star, with statues, documentaries, and tributes keeping his legacy alive.Essential Listening for New Fans: Phil Lynott remains one of rock's most beloved and tragic figures—a poet, a rocker, and a legend whose music still resonates today.http://www.thinlizzy.org/phil.htmlhttps://youtube.com/@thinlizzyofficial?si=HtxqVIFF3_AuRiWrhttps://www.thinlizzyofficial.com/https://www.facebook.com/share/15serR1qV2/?mibextid=wwXIfrhttps://x.com/thinlizzy_?s=21&t=Mzw5de5zsR-SDDbhyzH0Lghttps://www.instagram.com/thinlizzy?igsh=bjE3aXRvdnhnMDVh#ThinLizzy #PhilLynott #RockLegends #ClassicRock #IrishRock #TheBoysAreBackInTown #Jailbreak #LiveAndDangerous #70sRock #HardRock #WhiskeyInTheJar #BlackRose #DancingInTheMoonlight #RockNRoll #LegendaryBands
For our first Live Music & Me podcast of 2025, we were joined by our good friend the Scottish singer, songwriter & musician JJ ‘Jinky” Gilmour. You go into the New Year full of plans to make the podcast lean and mean, focus on the music etc. However, before we even got to the first gig question, we had discussed the ageing process, the relative merits of the Old Firm and hot water bottles. No, really. As a long-standing member of The Silencers, we were sure that JJ would have a few stories to tell – and he did. From a first gig at the Glasgow Apollo that JJ remembered more for what was happening in the crowd (it wasn't moshing), paying tribute to the legend that is Phil Lynott, and playing Blenheim Palace even although the promoter didn't know who he was – JJ was on very good form. JJ also clarified how many Coatbridge tramps were in The Silencers (clue- it wasn't 100%) – and mentioned U2 & Simple Minds a couple of times during the chat. And for the last question, one of them got the ‘one live album we should all own' nomination from him (and it's a belter). We tried for thick end of 6 months to make this one happen, and we hope you agree it was worth the effort. Enjoy and stay safe PS. JJ mentioned that he has had a couple of personal challenges during his career and has always been a big supporter of those organisations that offer Mental Health support. This week we catch up with Night Demon in August 2024. On the heels of a much-needed two-month break from band activities, Night Demon regrouped in Ireland to play the second installment of the Frost & Fireland Festival along with Cirith Ungol and a stacked international lineup. You will hear why it was important to the band to put on this festival in Limerick, despite the arduous travel logistics. They explain why they love the venue and why this show was so fulfilling and rewarding for them, even though they were pulling double-duty with back-to-back Night Demon and Cirith Ungol performances. Author Alan Byrne is a first-time guest. He has a new book on the late great Phil Lynott called Philip Lynott: Renegade. This is a brand new edition of the book originally released in 2012. It's the story of the pioneering Irish musician, from his early days on his beloved Dublin music scene through the adventurous days of Thin Lizzy, the band he led for thirteen years. Once mainstream success came his way with Thin Lizzy's powerhouse Jailbreak album in 1976, his musical thirst only heightened, and this book also offers an intimate insight into his musical experimentation beyond the Thin Lizzy framework. From the slow burn of his rise with Thin Lizzy to the unfortunate and unnecessary outcome of his short life, Renegade offers a vantage point from the people who were by his side through it all.Purchase a copy of Philip Lynott: Renegade Episode PlaylistFollow Alan Byrne on Facebook ---------- BookedOnRock.com The Booked On Rock Store The Booked On Rock YouTube Channel Follow The Booked On Rock with Eric Senich:FACEBOOKINSTAGRAMTIKTOKX Find Your Nearest Independent Bookstore Contact The Booked On Rock Podcast: thebookedonrockpodcast@gmail.com The Booked On Rock Music: “Whoosh” by Crowander / “Last Train North” & “No Mercy” by TrackTribe

This was recorded in my kitchen at home, hence the echo. I love getting on tape the memories of someone like Brush about "Philo" or anything else.
New Post-Punk vibes from Gap Year, synthpop from TR/ST, and a wayback track from Phil Lynott. Plus Vancouver indie trio leaves us a voicemail message about their new LP "Mingling With The Thorns"
Released on the 9th June 1978, “Jeff Wayne's Musical Version of The War of the Worlds” went on to sell an estimated 15 million copies. As you likely know, the album features an adaptation of H.G. Wells' classic sci-fi story, narrated by actor Richard Burton set to music, with vocal performances from the likes of David Essex, Justin Hayward, Phil Lynott, Chris Thompson, and Julie Covington. A single, “Forever Autumn”, reached number 5 on the UK singles chart, and has become an enduring classic. In 2006, the album was brought to life as a touring stage show. It's has had several revival tours since, including a London West End run in 2016. Jeff Wayne is picking up the baton again for the 2025 arena tour featuring Max George and Maisie Smith. Jeff Wayne was born in 1943 and wrote around 3000 advertising jingles which appeared on TV in the 1970s, as well as various television themes. He's also been a professional tennis player. He joined me from his home studio in Hertfordshire for our chat. Instagram: @sendingsignalspodcast

Aaron's Audio Edibles Track 17 is one of the most underrated hard rock albums of all time, "Jailbreak" by the insanely talented Irish rock band Thin Lizzy. Lead by the charismatic lead singer/bassist Phil Lynott, Lizzy has been cited by legendary bands in myriad genres of rock as a dominating influence over their own projects. Returning for this riff-filled hour is TJ "The Deuce" from our favorite podcast, The Rock and Roll Heaven Podcast on the Pantheon network. TJ had just concluded his 7-part series on the late, great Lynott and was more than happy to help us break down this incredible album track by track! #thinlizzy #phillynott #jailbreak #emerald #boysarebackintown #scottgorham #hueylewisandthenews #briandowney YUH Theme by David T and Mojo 3 https://www.amazon.com/Insanity-Sobriety-Blues-David-Mojo3/dp/B091N8BJNB The Rock and Roll Heaven Podcast on Apple Podcasts https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/rock-and-roll-heaven/id1450730862 Pantheon Podcasts https://pantheonpodcasts.com/ Jailbreak on Spotify https://open.spotify.com/album/2TCSZn8ArTdDhXYhsTNBPm?si=0Kd-dXSYT7iy8EmQvmT3tA Track List - Number One Record - Big Star 1 Jailbreak 2 Angel from the Coast 3 Running Back 4 Romeo and the Lonely Girl 5 Warriors 6 The Boys Are Back in Town 7 Fight or Fall 8 Cowboy Song 9 Emerald Banger of the Podcast: Emerald Yeah Uh Huh Social Stuff: Yeah Uh Huh on TikTok https://www.tiktok.com/@yeahuhhuhpod Yeah Uh Huh on Facebook https://facebook.com/YeahUhHuhPod Yeah Uh Huh on Twitter https://twitter.com/YeahUhHuhPod Yeah Uh Huh on Spotify https://open.spotify.com/show/7pS9l716ljEQLeMMxwihoS?si=27bd15fb26ed46aa Yeah Uh Huh on Apple Podcasts https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/yeah-uh-huh/id1565097611 Yeah Uh Huh Website: https://yeah-uh-huh.wixsite.com/yeahuhhuhpod

Graeme is an old friend of the podcast. We've talked to him in the past about his books on Phil Lynott and John Martyn. ‘Under The Ivy: the Life And Music of Kate Bush' first appeared in 2010, and was revised in 2015 after her Before the Dawn concerts and it's now been updated again as, despite no new music or public appearances, her worldwide reputation has rocketed through the roof. We look back here at various key points in the story including ... … why the way she made records was ahead of its time. … the ‘70s footage and recordings that were “supressed”. … the “reclusive” decade and how the press filled the vacuum. … divinely daft and humorous TV appearances eg with Delia Smith: “Waldorf Salad – that's got waldorfs in it!” … her bohemian childhood and the powerful influence of male counterparts, particularly eldest brother and erotic poet John Carder Bush. … the unconventional Smash Hits interview of 1981. … the ‘Before the Dawn' concerts and the reason she staged them. … her seven-year stand-off with Top Of The Pops. … her ‘70s rock group – the KT Bush Band (still going!) – and the songs they played eg The Stealer by Free, Brooklyn by Steely Dan, Shame Shame Shame by Johnny Winter. … Danny Baker's NME review – “nothing she writes about matters”. … Pamela Stephenson's vicious pastiche and Alan Partridge's part in her comeback. ... Talk Talk, Blackadder, Monty Python, Powell & Pressburger, Oscar Wilde, Celtic folk, the Pre-Raphaelites and other early influences. … and the advantage of never being cool. Lord of the Les Paul and Mariscal of the Marshall Stack, Scott Gorham shot to worldwide prominence with the legendary rock band Thin Lizzy. He created what would become known subsequently as “The Twin Guitar Attack” - a harmonised lead guitar style developed alongside players such as Brian Robertson and Gary Moore, driving home the larger-than-life persona of frontman and bass player Phil Lynott. At the height of their powers, Thin Lizzy were a world-straddling colossus of a band - hard rocking for sure but real songwriters, too. And just incredible live! I caught up with Scott at what used to be Olympic Recording Studios in Barnes (Led Zeppelin, Queen, Lizzy ... they all made records there). It's now a cinema complex and restaurant with a private members club hidden away for those in the know. We talk about Scott's early exposure to the guitar and live music, his relocation from California to London, and an audition for Thin Lizzy which I suspect would have broken most of us. We discuss the iconography of Gibson's Les Paul model. In particular, the heavily supervised shopping trip for the mini-humbucker Deluxe model with which Scott has become synonymous. We go deep on the semantics of scratch plates, amplifiers the size of a family SUV, and what happens when your guitar gets famous without you. But it wasn't all gold tops, champagne and caviar, life in Thin Lizzy could be tempestuous and Scott is candid about the darker times including how golf helped with the pain of recovery from addiction. Hey, if it works… right? We talk in depth about Scott's secret double life as a visual artist, discuss two of the rarest materials in the universe and share a fond hope that benevolent extraterrestrial life might just have our backs after all. Now, what no-one knew - because he had kept it a secret from the world - is that Scott Gorham is an extremely skilled artist and some of his extraordinarily detailed pencil drawings from the Thin Lizzy period have been rediscovered and are now available as fine art prints. He's had his first gallery showing and it's all going rather well. You can see more here: https://scottgorhamworld.com Take a look at Pain, Curiosity and Apocalypse, three works that we discuss in detail. Be advised - the language gets a little fruity as we progress. It doesn't get too awful, but listeners with delicate sensibilities or the under-fives should proceed with caution. In this episode, we speak with veteran guitarist and original co-founder of Grand Slam. Laurence Archer. Laurence originally formed Grand Slam with Phil Lynott of Thin Lizzy in 1984. The band was short-lived after Phil passed away in 1986. However, Laurence has reformed the band and they are releasing a great new album Wheel Of Fortune.
How many power chords do you have? Because this week we've got plenty to spare!Thin Lizzy had been more or less given one final shot to break big. Despite big creative differences, perhaps a little too much "hydration," and maybe not enough discipline early on, the crew behind Jailbreak all recognized the stakes.Packed with rock radio staples and incredible deep cuts, Jailbreak secured Thin Lizzy's future on the recording front. Driven by Phil Lynott's vision and supported by exquisite drumming and twin guitar work, the band turned in an absolute classic.Jailbreak is simply some of the purest rock you will ever hear. Thanks for listening! UK artist Laurence Archer of Grand Slam discusses how he began his music career at age 17 1/2; his experience working with Grand Slam and Phil Lynott; reviving Grand Slam and songs written in the 80s with Lynott (the original reels were stolen from Lynott's studio after his death); quitting guitar for 10 years after working in the film industry; the new upcoming album Wheel of Fortune and the re-release of Hit the Ground, an album released in 2019 prior to COVID; and much more! Having returned to Austin after a day in Dallas (dallas't place you wanna be) and Fort Worth (fort what it's worth), myself, Sloane and Felix found ourselves in a familiar formation around the kitchen table mic in hand, ready to welcome to the show for the first time Madison Clapp! Together the four of us recap on our yester-day trip, making sure to sprinkle in some of the artist's work we bore witness to at a museum in Fort Worth ('bore' being the operative term). This gives the show some edge before we dull said sharpened edge with everything we say afterwards. Having established ourselves as worldly and learned, we immediately dive into the iPod songs we thought defined our singular experiences in childhood but quickly find, thanks to Adam Sandler, that the illusion of individualism is a myth designed to blind us from the horrors of the hive mind we're all a part of. Brushing that aside rather quickly, we recap on the month that was after last month's episode which included some Austin shows, karaoke and a renaissance faire. That frees us up to dive headlong into the segments which sees us highlight micro-genius moments from the likes of the Flying Burrito Brothers, St Vincent, Chappel Roan and Olivia Rodrigo and discuss Phil Lynott's inability to consume confectionary effectively. Make sure to stick around to the end so you get to hear the visceral disappointment in our new guest's voice when we get to Guilty Hatred's and then despair at the time you've wasted listening to these four specific individual's once Pete's Patent Pending comes to a merciful close.
