BUFFALO, NY- July 10, 2024 – A new #editorial paper was #published in Oncotarget's Volume 15 on June 20, 2024, entitled, “Targeting ABC transporters in PDAC – past, present, or future?” In this new editorial, Cecilia Bergonzini, Elisa Giovannetti and Erik H.J. Danen from Leiden University discuss targeting ABC transporters in pancreatic ductal carcinoma (PDAC). Despite its lower incidence as compared to more common cancers such as lung or breast carcinomas, PDAC ranks as the third leading cause of cancer mortality in the US and the sixth worldwide. This is due to the fact that PDAC survival rates are among the lowest for cancer patients, around 13% in the US. ATP-binding cassette (ABC) transporters represent a family of transmembrane proteins that, using the energy from ATP hydrolysis, extrude molecules from the cytoplasm to the exterior or into vesicles. Some of these transporters have been associated with resistance to a spectrum of structurally diverse chemotherapeutic drugs, earning them the name of multidrug resistance (MDR) pumps. One of the best-characterized ABC transporters is ABCB1 (MDR1). It is physiologically expressed in tissues such as kidney, liver, pancreas, intestine, the blood-brain barrier, and more, where it exerts a protective role, by extruding xenobiotics and potentially toxic molecules. Moreover, increased ABCB1 expression in tumors has been associated with poor prognosis. “Paclitaxel is a bona fide substrate for ABCB1 [18] and ABCB1 has been implicated in paclitaxel and nab-paclitaxel resistance in multiple types of cancer [19, 20]. Could ABCB1 represent a therapeutic target in PDAC patients to suppress resistance against GnP? Danen Reed and Dillon Jordan make up the other 2/3rds of Charlotte Sands onstage and behind the scenes. Danen drums onstage, but also writes and produces most of the music for Charlotte Sands. Patrick "Paddy" Danen is now a non-player member of the SNC Basketball team, who is transitioning to the baseball team to become a pitcher for the Green Knights. Patrick is also a 2-time Gold Medalist with the USA Deaf Basketball Team whose selfless personality resonates with many members of the Saint Norbert College Community. Paddy has been through a lot in this life, which he discusses at length in this interview, of being deaf in both ears after a meningitis diagnosis at just 6 months old, as well as atrial fibrillation, which has cut into his basketball career. Nonetheless, Danen utilizes an outgoing personality, as well as a positive outlook in life to inspire those around him.

Welcome back to the highlight of your weekend, this is be & Friends by GM. One of the biggest challenges moms complain to me about is catering to everyone's dietary needs or preferences in the family. I hear questions like, How do I NOT make more than one meal for my family? How do I make my kid eat what we eat? How do I get my picky eater to try new foods? I get it believe me. I also have a picky eater at home and it is definitely a challenge to not only make a healthy meal but actually get this food in her mouth without coercion, threatening or punishment. I believe that feeding, as well as parenting, has got to be done in a respectful manner with understanding, compassion, grace, and patience. I hear many moms complain that they are not enjoying to be in the kitchen, that they hate cooking. A lot of it is not really because they hate cooking, but actually because they've never learned to cook, which in my belief is one of the most important skills to learn ourselves and teach our children. Let's start by saying that if you are not enjoying cooking in general, or that you are dreading spending time in the kitchen this activity would seem both laborsome and a lot of hard and not fun work. No judgment here, I admit that I don't LOVE cooking, I do it because I choose to. You know that I am a huge proponent of sustainable living and this is true with regards to eating and feeding as well. If you find yourself repeatedly struggling and dreading mealtime then you have to ask yourself, WHY? What about this time of day is making me feel this way? Is it because I did not prepare ahead of time? Is it because the recipe I've chosen Is too complicated, has too many ingredients and steps? Could it be because I am too slow in the kitchen? Or is it because there is too much chaos around this time every day? Even as a nutritionist and a health nut myself I don't think it is necessary to overcomplicate food, especially the weekly meals. I enjoy cooking, but you will not find me during the week cooking elaborate meals with more than 10 ingredients, and I'm also not afraid of repeating meals and eating the same food the next day (with the exception of salads of course). Whatever I have to do to streamline this process for myself, make life easy for myself, I do it. So, yup, today we're having the same rice with chicken like yesterday, yes we're having soup, again. Remember, you are not only their mom, you are also the leader, and it is important to assert yourself with confidence consistently. This way they are learning that they can trust you, that it is OK to wait until the food is ready, that they are not going to die. I love talking with other nutritionists and dietitians who also work with moms and pick their brains on how they approach these issues. Danen Kane has never been afraid to break convention in his music, but he has a remarkable ability to maintain accessibility and consistency of voice while creating eclectic and sometimes surprising tunes. Part of that ability comes from his unconventional path to music ministry. Kane's first love was not piano or guitar; it was basketball. In fact, he didn't do anything musical until he was twenty years old, when he felt a strong call from God to lay down the hours invested in his sport and focus on pursuing his faith. “During my sophomore year of college,” Kane recalls, “I had a roommate who had an acoustic guitar and I was really curious. I grew up in a small town that didn't have any avenues of learning that kind of thing, so I just asked him if I could use it to try to learn some worship songs that I'd heard at Campus Crusade for Christ.” Despite no formal guitar or vocal training, one short year later he had completed his first independent project. Being honest with himself is something that has served Kane well both in his faith and his music. That honesty is part of the strong theme woven throughout the songs of his new CD, Flesh and Soul. Kane explains, “There is a battle between flesh and spirit, a tension of living in our brokenness and our bodies and yet very much desiring God in every single moment. It's a daily battle for the brand-new Christian or the Christian of 40 or 50 years. This record is about embracing the journey of sanctification and encouraging myself and encouraging others that if you're not in the best spot, or if you're struggling or feel like you've taken a step back, to keep fighting and keep wrestling with that.”

Kane explains, “There is a battle between flesh and spirit, a tension of living in our brokenness and our bodies and yet very much desiring God in every single moment. It’s a daily battle for the brand-new Christian or the Christian of 40 or 50 years. This record is about embracing the journey of sanctification and encouraging myself and encouraging others that if you're not in the best spot, or if you're struggling or feel like you've taken a step back, to keep fighting and keep wrestling with that.”
