About a quarter of a million 18-year-olds in the UK secured a university place this summer and are now preparing to head off to their chosen institution. The numbers increased by about 5% at a time when the costs associated with getting a degree are also rising. There's a patchwork of different funding models across the UK, but for students in England and Wales tuition fees have gone up for the first time in eight years. We take a look at how tuition and day-to-day costs are funded across the UK, and hear from students about their housing - another major cost that has been increasing.Debt is also now a major part of the university experience, with students in England graduating with an average debt of £53,000. One graduate explains how she has struggled to make a dent in her debt over the past 10 years despite holding well paid jobs.Felicity Hannah is joined by Tom Allingham from the student money website Save the Student and Clare Dickens, director of the Student Life team at the University of Wolverhampton.Presenter: Felicity Hannah Producers: James Graham and Helen Ledwick Editor: Jess Quayle(This episode was first broadcast at 3pm on Radio 4 on the 10th of September 2025).

Guests: Andy Winter, Interim Director of Student Life at the University of Kent; Helene Usherwood, Senior Partner at Anderson Quigley; Jeremy Shute, Fortune 500 Leader and Co-Founder Ignition Strategy.     The Higher Education sector is adapting to the changing strategic and financial environment, and a particularly visible part of this adaptation is restructuring within many institutions. In this episode, 3 guests from inside and outside HE reflect broadly upon restructure and redundancy – how we talk about it in day-to-day working life, the impact it can have, how it is led, and the type of support that can be valuable in helping colleagues and institutions transition to a new phase. We also delve into the topic of who owns a career path, and whether we need to change our approach to better embed career conversations into overall professional life. While we will not have captured every angle of a redundancy and restructuring experience, the episode aims to provide an important space for some reflections and advice.  The Association of Higher Education Professionals is proud to support Job Shadowing HE as a valuable source of professional insight.

Hi friends, and welcome back to the podcast. This one's going to be short—and honestly, it's an episode I didn't think I was going to record. Why? Well, if you've been following along with Cassidy's journey over the past year, you know we've covered a lot: from brainstorming her personal statement, to revising her supplements, to weighing her college acceptances. And when we wrapped Part 5, I figured we could leave it there. I thought it might be enough to know she had some great options. Silly me. You wrote in. You wanted to know: Where did she end up? So here we are: the final chapter (well, really the beginning) of Cassidy's college journey. In this quick update, Cassidy shares where she's heading this fall, why she chose it, and how she's getting ready for this next step.
