Come in, and know my satire, man! It is that time of year once again, when satire is all around you and you are cordially invited to the Smith & Waugh Festival Satirical Party! This year Jo and Adam take a look at the Christmassy satire of Stella Gibbons' Christmas at Cold Comfort Farm, the festive scenes in George and Weedon Grossmith's Diary of a Nobody and the contagious comedy of Nancy Mitford's Christmas Pudding. Jo also revisits a cherished Christmas story from her childhood and, of course, no Smith & Waugh Christmas would be complete without our very special, extremely self-indulgent Christmas sketc h(featuring a wonderful cameo appearance from our friend, Ben of The Pod)!
What sinister secret lies in the Christmas pudding? The perfect setting for an old-fashioned English Christmas - a cosy manor, falling snow, and family gathered round - gets an unexpected guest: Hercule Poirot himself! When a foreboding note appears on the famous detective's pillow, he knows the idyllic festive traditions conceal a mystery more twisted than ribbons on parcels. As joyful carols fill the air, goings on go on behind closed doors. Then a body is discovered! (Though things are not what they seem) And Poirot turns a deception deftly to his advantage. Can Poirot navigate the web of secrets and uphold justice amid the joyful festivities? Enjoy Agatha Christie's witty characterisations as her beloved detective celebrates an unforgettable Christmas in the country. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Agatha Christie The Adventure of the Christmas Pudding 25-12-06
In this episode, Robert and Lisa share fond memories and hilarious stories of the annual making of the Boiled Christmas Pudding hosted by Robert's mother and his Aunt Carol. If the holidays are a time for catching up with old friends, laughter, and taking a respite from the drudgery of every day life, this is the ultimate holiday episode. Between high school and college, I spent a gap year in Japan. There I met Robert, truly one of the funniest and fun-loving people I know. After that year, we stayed in touch as he met and married Lisa. They raise their family in Japan. Our families only see each other every 4 or 5 years. However, as you will hear, those times are as joyful and familiar as if we saw one another every day. Highlights A lot of laughter What is a Christmas Pudding anyway?? Memories of stirring the pudding for good luck Interpreting multiple versions of the same recipe More laughter 4 generations born in 4 different nations A non-food Christmas tradition from Robert's family that deeply affected me Listen Now to Robert & Lisa Related Episodes Related Recipes

Essay 5: Christmas PuddingA new series of essays written and read by the very popular Fiona Stafford, Professor of Literature at Somerville College, Oxford, following her much praised series of essays The Meaning of Trees and Composers and their Dogs. Here Fiona explores some of the world's favourite puddings, all of which have surprising stories and have become symbols far beyond the pudding bowl. Christmas pudding. A British icon, supposedly a classless, medieval religious symbol but which owes its modern prominence to Dickens. Exported as Empire Pudding, it is loved around the Commonwealth. There are surprising local adaptations in Asia (especially India) and the Caribbean, adding spices and exotic elements and renaming it as their own Christmas tradition. Thus it symbolises the reverse appropriation of imperialism. Key ingredient: dried fruit. Dates back to 4000 BC, much older than any religion, hence its role in nearly all of them. Christmas pudding is an example of the Victorians inventing many of our “traditions” we think of as older. Charles Dickens was a major creator of modern ideas of Christmas, with Mrs Beeton's recipe for 'Exceedingly Good Plum Pudding' (later Christmas pudding) whether flambéed or teetotal, establishing the British idea of Christmas centring on particular foods. Literary examples include Edward Lear's wacky villain, 'The Plum Pudding Flea'. Seeing and eating a Christmas pudding is like breaking into hot earth, a sweet, steaming mound of loam that looks rich enough to plant and grow the healthiest of Christmas trees; a universal substrate for a global festival. And then … there's the tooth-breaking sixpence-in-the-pudding tradition.Producer – Turan Ali A Bona Broadcasting production for BBC Radio 3
It's a somewhat festive episode this week, with discussions on Christmas pyjamas, strange Christmas pudding traditions, and Joe's contention that Rocky is a Christmas movie. The Christmas spirit soon gives way to the usual fare, such as debates on if Joe would look crazy with bleached hair and if Darren could play Marlon Brando in a biopic.

Emmy-winning screenwriter, author, cartoonist and performer Andy Riley is this week's guest - and rather appropriately, given the time of year, we're talking about the classic series six Goon Show episode The International Christmas Pudding. In a far-ranging conversation Andy and Tyler talk about his history with the show and some of the topics this specific episode raises - such as the old-fashioned notion of British prestige abroad. It was also the show in which Peter Sellers got into very hot water with producer Peter Eton for his behaviour. What triggered it? They examine the moral, spiritual and physical malaise inherent in most of the Goon Show characters, especially Thynne & Moriarty - at this point in the show's history the first signs of their wretchedness become apparent. Harry Secombe's performance and aptitude for getting a laugh out of fluffs is rightly praised, while Bluebottle comes in for a bit of flak. Having worked in radio, Andy brings his knowledge of tricks producers would employ to avoid under-running programmes, and we hear from audio engineer and famed Goon Show restorer Ted Kendall on how he managed to piece back together a shortened version of The International Christmas Pudding to its original length. Oh, and what's the connection between the Goons and hit US political satire Veep? Tune in to find out!
