Episode 262: Face and Feel Your Fear is a reminder that fear isn't something to eliminate—it's something to understand, experience, and move through. In this episode, I share why fear, anxiety, self doubt, and uncertainty don't mean you're doing something wrong. Whether you're preparing to serve a mission, currently serving, or navigating life after your mission, I want to help you see fear as evidence that you're growing, stretching, and becoming the person God is helping you become. Using the story of David and Goliath, I explore what courage really looks like and why David's greatest strength wasn't the absence of fear but his willingness to face it anyway. We talk about emotional resilience, feeling your emotions instead of avoiding them, allowing anxiety to rise and fall, facing your personal Goliaths, trusting God, and recognizing that the challenges you're facing today may be preparing you for something even greater tomorrow. I also share conversations with missionaries who are learning that confidence isn't never feeling fear—it's knowing you can feel fear and still move forward. If you've been waiting to feel fearless before taking the next step, this episode will encourage you to stop waiting and start trusting yourself. You'll learn how to face your fear, feel your fear, and discover that courage, growth, and confidence are built by moving through discomfort, not avoiding it. Episode 262: Face and Feel Your Fear will help you see your struggles as preparation, your fear as information, and your willingness as one of your greatest strengths. As always, if you found this episode helpful, I want to invite you to subscribe if you aren't already, share this episode with your friends and missionaries you know, and write a review. I know this work will help LDS missionaries around the world and it would mean so much to me if you did. Matt Pearson, Senior Pastor of ClearView Baptist Church in Franklin, Tennessee continues the sermon series "FORMED: Wins and Warnings from the Life of David" with "David & Goliath - Formed by a Big God"
1 Samuel 17.17-50. The clash between David and Goliath is one of the best-known stories in the Old Testament. But it is not just about courageously overcoming overwhelming odds; it teaches about obedience, spiritual warfare, knowing that God is with us and how he wants to use us just as we are. 31 May 2026.
TDAgiantSlayer@Gmail.com The David Alliance Garth Heckman VERY FAMILIAR STORY - *TIED TO MY NOTES TODAY THE BUILD UP and DEMISE OF ISRAEL THE PEOPLE WANTED A MAN OVER GOD (They wanted a King)… Here is an old quote: when more than one votes… you can assure its the wrong decision. It wasn't a King that was truly the problem - BUT RATHER following a man, that was the problem. It was the peoples desire to follow a King over a prophet who followed God. ***No one voted a prophet in. ****People choose a King, God chooses a prophet. Saul offers false sacrifices Saul chooses to disobey Gods orders to wipe out the Amakalites Saul becomes erratic and tormented by demonic spirits Saul now operates out of fear *Israel and the army now saw their enemies the way their leader did - IN FEAR. The battle of David and Goliath was never really about David and Goliath. It was the culmination of Israel's spiritual decline under Saul, and the first visible sign that God had already been at work preparing a different kind of leader — one after His own heart. 1 Samuel 17 41 Goliath walked out toward David with his shield bearer ahead of him, 42 sneering in contempt at this ruddy-faced boy. 43 “Am I a dog,” he roared at David, “that you come at me with a stick?” And he cursed David by the names of his gods. 44 “Come over here, and I'll give your flesh to the birds and wild animals!” Goliath yelled. 45 David replied to the Philistine, “You come to me with sword, spear, and javelin, but I come to you in the name of the Lord of Heaven's Armies—the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied. 46 Today the Lord will conquer you, and I will kill you and cut off your head. And then I will give the dead bodies of your men to the birds and wild animals, and the whole world will know that there is a God in Israel! 47 And everyone assembled here will know that the Lord rescues his people, but not with sword and spear. This is the Lord's battle, and he will give you to us!”
When the subject of a historical account like this one tells you the reason why he will be victorious before he achieves his victory, we should probably pay attention to that right? So often when someone references David & Goliath, they frame it as if it's about a big guy versus small fry, and the underdog wins the day because of his ingenuity. Let's just make this clear: you and I are not David and this account is not about being brave and facing your giants. If anything, we are the cowering Israelites who cannot face our foe; we need a champion, a savior, to step forward in the power of God and rescue us from sin and death. 1 Samuel 17 - 1:02 . 1 Samuel 18 - 13:05 . :::Christian Standard Bible translation. All music written and produced by John Burgess Ross.Co-produced by the Christian Standard Bible.facebook.com/commuterbibleinstagram.com/commuter_bibletwitter.com/CommuterPodpatreon.com/commuterbibleadmin@commuterbible.org

Sunday School is a 2026 sermon series examining the classic stories of the Bible that every kid and adult should know, and what they meant to us now. In this message, Pastor Candace Pringle explores the story of David & Goliath, from 1 Samuel 17.
In this follow-up message, Claire reflects on how watching House of David drew fresh attention to the preparation behind David's victory in First Book of Samuel. Instead of centering on the moment David faces the giant, the teaching highlights the hidden years that shaped him.David—King David—was overlooked and unseen, yet his life as a shepherd became the training ground where intimacy with God was formed. Fighting the lion and the bear built courage and faith long before he met Goliath. When the moment came, David refused Saul's armor and trusted the God who had already proven faithful. Claire connects this story to modern battles—health struggles, work pressures, family burdens, mental health, and trauma—offering five “spiritual stones” for believers today:Prayer – cultivating closeness with God in the hidden placesGod's Word – anchoring life in truth and promisesFaith – trusting God's past faithfulness for present challengesTestimony & Community – drawing strength from shared stories and supportJesus the Cornerstone – building everything on Jesus ChristThe talk concludes by inviting listeners to name their own “battle cry,” praying for boldness, courage, and deeper trust in God as they face the giants before them. David Barbe grew up in Atlanta, Georgia, where he attended Ridgeview High School and began playing in bands during the 1970s. Barbe's parents were influential in his love as music as both his parents, John and Jane Barbe were big band musicians as well as creating Jingles.David Barbe arrived in Athens, Georgia in 1981 to attend the University of Georgia, and stepped straight into a music scene that would help shape his entire life. The move to Athens quickly found Barbe immersed in the creative energy of the music in Athens—playing with local punk bands like Bar-B-Que Killers, Mercyland and later Buzz Hungry . When Mercyland disbanded in 1991, Barbe didn't slow down. While taking the lead in Buzz Hungry, he caught the attention of Bob Mould from the band Husker Du and joined his band Sugar, a band that was part of an explosion of indie alternative rock, helping to shape Sugar's evolving sound before departing in 1995. Years later, that musical connection would come full circle with a reunion performance at the Treasure Island Music Festival in 2009.But one of the most defining turns in Barbe's story happened behind the scenes. A call from John Keane opened the door to studio work—and a whole new creative path. Under Keane's mentorship, Barbe mastered the art of production and engineering, laying the foundation for what would become an extraordinary part of his life, losing count of up to 400 albums he has produced, mixed or engineered. In 1997, he co-founded Chase Park Transduction in Athens, a studio that would become a cornerstone of the city's music legacy. From there, Barbe went on to produce hundreds of records—working with artists like Drive-By Truckers, Deerhunter, The Glands, Amy Ray, k.d. lang, and R.E.M.. Somewhere along the way, the number of albums he's worked on climbed into the hundreds—so many, he's stopped counting. And as if that weren't enough, Barbe continues to shape the next generation of artists as director of the Music Business Certificate Program at the University of Georgia—bringing his journey full circle, right back to where it all began.Barbe, a firm believer of family first — and his wife, Amy, have three children — a daughter and 2 sons. . He is a past president of the Athens-Clarke County Little League baseball league and has managed his sons' all-star teams to several city championships.Barbe's name has been equated as one of the best producers in Athens, attracting bands from all over. He has been a stronghold for musicians here for a long time and I don't see him stopping any time soon.Barbe gave me the opportunity to ask him about things he doesn't necessarily get a chance to answer often. Podcast Begins at 15:09#TopOfTheOrder: Sweet 16 & Elite 8 Rundown. We're breaking down the madness that led us to the Final Four. In the East, (2) UConn outlasted (1) Duke 73-72 in an instant classic to punch their ticket. In the West, (1) Arizona stayed hot, dismantling (2) Purdue 79-64. Meanwhile, (1) Michigan dominated (6) Tennessee 95-62, and (3) Illinois proved they belong by taking down (9) Iowa 71-59. Final Four Preview:The Heavyweight Bout: (1) Michigan vs. (1) Arizona. Two #1 seeds, two different styles. Is Arizona's balance too much, or can the Wolverines' 90+ PPG offense overwhelm them? The Contrast: (3) Illinois vs. (2) UConn. The Huskies are the postseason masters, but the Illini have been the most disrespected 3-seed in history. Can Illinois pull the "upset" in Indy?#ChoicesOfTheVoices: The Cinderella Drought. As we narrow the March Madness brackets down to the Final 4, one element that has become rarer these past few seasons is the Cinderella team. The lowest seed of the Sweet 16 was #11 Texas, not exactly a mid-major Cinderella story. The question from The SportsBros Podcast: Do you enjoy the tournament as much without the big upsets and small schools advancing as it provides more marquee matches, or do you like seeing the David/Goliath matchups later in the tournament?#WalkOffShot: Purely off the cuff. Goliath was a monster. This man was a giant, a beast; the Devil's own proxy. But God had His own champion. He sent a shepherd from Bethlehem to crush the monster's head. Does that remind you of anybody else? In today's study of 1 Samuel 17, we'll see the Gospel in OT clothing. Questions That We'll Answer: A) In what ways was Goliath a proxy for the serpent? B) What other types or shadows are in this chapter? C) How do Gen. 3, Rev. 13, and 1 Samuel 17 connect? Speaker: Dr. Toby Holt

What do you do when the giant in front of you feels impossible to defeat? On Family Sunday at Family Church, we gathered kids and adults together to revisit one of the most powerful stories in Scripture — David and Goliath from 1 Samuel 17. Through a fun and unforgettable live illustration, we were reminded that: Giants don't disappear just because we ignore them. You can't fight spiritual battles with worldly methods. Preparation happens in private before victory happens in public. Sometimes God removes the giant… and sometimes He gives you strength to face it. Parents, kids, families — this message is for all of us. Whether your giant is fear, anxiety, finances, marriage struggles, parenting challenges, or something no one else sees, the battle belongs to the Lord. We are called to fight in the name of Jesus — not in our own strength. If this message encouraged you, share it with someone who needs strength to face their giant today. #FamilyChurch #DavidAndGoliath #FacingGiants #ChildlikeFaith #faithinaction 00:00 – Family Sunday Introduction 01:00 – Why Jesus Welcomes Children 02:00 – Setting Up the Story of David & Goliath 03:00 – The 40-Day Standoff 04:00 – David Arrives on the Scene 05:00 – Saul's Armor Doesn't Fit 07:30 – Five Smooth Stones 08:30 – Meet Goliath (Live Illustration) 11:00 – David's Bold Declaration 13:00 – The Battle in the Valley 14:30 – What Giants Look Like Today 15:30 – You Can't Fight Like the World 17:30 – Preparation in Private 19:30 – Pray From the Heart 20:00 – Family Prayer Time 21:00 – Sometimes God Removes the Giant 22:00 – Closing Prayer

Today the 4 friends are taken back to see David and Goliath.
October 28, 2025We prayed together and sat with the David–Goliath account as a living picture of spiritual warfare. We noted how “Saul's armor” symbolizes the flesh and false teaching that never fits us, while God quietly prepares us in hidden places to trust Him. With the “sling” of faith and the “stone” of truth, we run toward loud enemies—fear, doubt, accusation—resting in Christ's sufficiency. We affirmed that our Shepherd corrects, protects, and leads; His love is never tied to our performance. We need one local assembly where we become a “joint that supplies,” sharing the overflow of His love.TopicsGod prepares us behind the scenes for intimacy and battle“Saul's armor” = flesh/self-protection/false teaching that does not fitThe sling of faith and the stone of truth overcome loud enemiesOur Shepherd's rod and staff: correction, protection, guidance, careSheep reality: we cannot feed, guide, protect, or cleanse ourselvesNo condemnation in Christ; accusers fall silent in His loveCleansed conscience vs. defiled conscience activated by liesOne local assembly: Christ the Head; we become a joint that suppliesLove not tied to performance—He performs what He requiresTrials soften our will so love can flow to othersKey MomentsWe refused “armor of the flesh” and ran in God's strength. We pictured faith as a sling and Christ's word as the smooth stone. We recognized how accusation tries to crush, but Christ defends and frees. We thanked God for fathering care and perfect timing in our stories. We closed with gratitude for our local assembly and asked for grace to rest in what He has already done.Practice This WeekWhen fear, suspicion, or irritation rises, pick up one “stone” of truth and answer it out loud in faith.Receive the Shepherd's gentle correction; let Him inspect and heal hidden “injuries.”Supply another member: share one overflow of encouragement you received.Guard fellowship: keep fleshly substitutes and self-protection off the table.Reflection QuestionWhere am I still trying to make “Saul's armor” fit, and what would it look like today to drop it and trust the Shepherd with the sling of faith instead?
The story of David & Goliath is often simplified for children, but in this episode we dive deeper into the reality: cultural context, raw humanity, and God's redemption at work. Scripture References 1 Samuel 17; Psalm 23; John 10:1–18 Main Takeaways - God fights for His people. - David foreshadows Christ's victory. - Faith is confidence in God, not self. Reflection Questions 1. What giants do you face? 2. How does this story point to Jesus instead of us? Pastor Scott unpacks the story of David and Goliath as more than a boy-versus-giant tale—it's a blueprint for faith under pressure, showing how David endured his brothers' contempt, Saul's doubts, and Goliath's mockery by relying on God's Spirit and the lessons learned in secret battles with lions and bears. We'll explore how that same Spirit equips us to face our own “giants” (and the enemy behind them), not with our strength but in the name of the Lord, and why walking in obedience and alignment with Christ renders the devil powerless.

Being that I recently finished watching Amazon Prime's new hit series "House of David," I begin this episode sharing my impressions of it. The series follows the biblical story of the ultimate under-dog David, who faces off against the most infamous giant in history, Goliath. Watching this series led me down a deep research rabbit hole concerning the origins of Goliath. Who was he really? Was he more than just a tall human as the mainstream narrative has lead us to believe? And who were "The Watchers" and the enigmatic "Nephilim" that the Bible, the Book of Enoch and other ancient texts and historians speak of? In preparing for his battle with Goliath, why exactly did David select five smooth stones from the stream? After his victory over Goliath, why did David cut off the giant's head and transport it to a far away city? What is the seed of the serpent and why does an ancient prophecy in Genesis seem to connect Christ's crucifixion with a mysterious location known as the “Hill of the Skull” in Jerusalem? You definitely do not want to miss this one…ISRAEL/ PETRA TOUR

SERIES: Open Door PoliciesYou don't even have to be a churchgoer to know about David & Goliath - it's a legendary account that has cemented itself in cultures throughout the ages. But what are we to make of a slingshotting shepherd boy who takes down a giant? With God fighting our battles, should we expect to slay our own giants as well? God doesn't guarantee that. But he does foreshadow a greater guarantee through the victory of the giant slayer: an open door to heaven for all who believe.

Pastor Carlos HuertasHave you heard that appearances can be deceiving? The story I bring you today is about a young man who was once again looked down upon, even by his own family. The army of Israel was ready for battle against the Philistines. They had formed ranks, and suddenly, their best weapon appeared: a very strong giant who was also very well protected. In addition to his weapons, he began to insult the army of Israel.1 Samuel 17:8-11 (NIV)- The Israelites were shocked and afraid. Have you ever been in a situation where you felt shocked and afraid? How did it go for you? It amazes me that the army prepares, for battle, but this giant makes them feel fear. Many people live in this way, full of fear, afraid of what will happen. Addictions are often the result of fears or anxieties. Infidelities are the result of insecurity. Divorces are often the result of a lack of commitment from people. We are dismayed and fearful, even within the church.1 Samuel 17:12-15 (NIV)- David was the youngest son in the family, the one who had to take care of the family's sheep. Even to his own family, he didn't seem very important. But David had found favor in the eyes of God. God Himself says to the prophet, referring to David, "I have found a man after My own heart."1 Samuel 17:22-23 (NIV)- This stirred something in David because he couldn't understand why his people were so afraid and in such a condition before this giant. He heard that whoever defeated the giant would receive a series of rewards from the king. His brothers got angry with him, but David went and spoke to the king.1 Samuel 17:32-33 (NIV)- David was neither a soldier nor a warrior; he was a shepherd. David knew that while he was in the fields, caring for his father's sheep, God was with him and gave him strength to fight against bears and lions. David had already experienced these situations. He knew that the battle wasn't his; it was God who was with him and fought for him.1 Samuel 17:40-45 (NIV)- David defeated Goliath by throwing his first stone, just with a stone.Isaiah 28:16 (NIV)- Isaiah talked about Christ Jesus, who would be the foundation for the church and all those who believe in Him. He gave himself as a sacrifice for us. Christ died for us when we fell short of God's glory. David defeated Goliath with a stone, and Christ is that rock on which our faith is built.Psalms 18:2 (NIV)- The Bible records that David had to fight with other giants. There were giants he could not defeat alone, and other people at his side beat them for him. This gives us an understanding of the importance of surrounding ourselves with people who help us fight. There are people here whose first step is to invite and accept Jesus as our Lord and Savior. Today, some people are fighting personal battles and have tried to fight on their strength. Today, you must rest and believe Jesus has already won the war.

When the subject of a historical account like this one tells you the reason why he will be victorious before he achieves his victory, we should probably pay attention to that right? So often when someone references David & Goliath, they frame it as if it's about a big guy versus small fry, and the underdog wins the day because of his ingenuity. Let's just make this clear: you are not David and this account is not about facing your giants. If anything, we are the cowering Israelites who cannot face our foe; we need a champion, a savior, to step forward in the power of God and rescue us from sin and death.1 Samuel 16 - 1:10 . 1 Samuel 17 - 6:03 . 1 Samuel 18 - 18:28 .
