A recent review of forest trends shows clearcut logging of old growth forests is continuing at unsustainable levels. I speak with Senior Policy and Science Advisor Jens Wieting.
The deferral of scheduled care at Ennis Hospital, UHL and other Midwest facilities this week has been described as "completely unacceptable". It's now two days since the HSE took the decision to cancel elective and day surgery as well as outpatient appointments for an indefinite period of time across UL Hospitals Group facilities. The Emergency Department in Dooradoyle remains open 24/7 while Injury Units and medical assessment units at Ennis, Nenagh and St. John's are all operating as normal. Irish Hospital Consultant Association President Gabrielle Colleran has been telling me the people of the Midwest have been abandoned "by virtue of what their postcode is".
Elad Gil is a serial entrepreneur, executive, and one of the greatest tech investors of all time, with early stakes in something like 40 billion-plus dollar companies: AirBnB, Anduril, Coinbase, Figma, Flexport, Instacart, Notion, OpenDoor, Pinterest, Square, Stripe… I could really go on. He's now managing a new billion dollar venture fund, for which he's the sole investor. Elad is also the co-founder of 2 companies: Color Genomics, a company providing genetic testing, software and clinical services for large-scale health programs – and before that, Mixer Labs, a company building location infrastructure for mobile devices that was acquired by Twitter. He worked as a VP at Twitter and also started the mobile team at Google. 0:00 - Intro 6:11 - Blank Slates and Decaying Institutions 8:16 - Western Pessimism and Agendas of Abundance vs Scarcity 12:30 - The Long Boom: Is Innovation Speeding Up? 16:26 - Are Startups Founder Limited or Market Limited? 19:26 - EIR Syndrome and Choosing the Right Market 21:41 - What Makes for a Good Investor, Operator and Entrepreneur? 24:05 - Positives and Negatives of Investing and Operating 26:17 - The Brand Value of Individuals vs Institutions 28:05 - Competing with Massive Firms 30:33 - Market-Driven Investing 33:23 - Starting Companies as Surfing Waves 36:09 - Age of Accomplishment and The Deferral of Adulthood 42:15 - What to Say Yes To 44:21 - Defense Tech and Complacency 49:25 - Private Markets and The Future of Venture 52:11 - Discontinuities in AI 53:49 - On Google 55:16 - LLM Oligopoly and Long-Term Scenarios for AI 1:00:41 - AGI and Sleeping 3 Hours a Night 1:03:19 - AI Doomerism 1:06:05 - The Deterioration of Speed 1:09:27 - Bureaucracy and the State of Nuclear 1:12:52 - Generosity and the Culture of Silicon Valley 1:15:19 - What Should More People Be Thinking About?

Motherhood is a wonderful thing, but it can be so thankless sometimes, so it's understandable that hardworking Karen, the "pillar of her family" (of three people) wants to take a well-deserved holiday to Paris. But first she has to get a passport, tell her family she's going, find out that her mum has dementia, find out that she's adopted, find out that her teen daughter is pregnant, drink too much, get asked if she has an eating disorder, hook up with her boss, hook up with her ex, and let everyone know how much she resents them. Will she ever make it to Paris? It's inconclusive.Plus, Harry and Stacey are entranced by Robert Pattinson's series of thin scarves, compare being a parent to hosting a podcast, and try to work out why Catherine Tate agreed to do this film.Don't forget to subscribe to Poster Boys, and leave us a comment and rating!Get in touch with us at posterboyspod@gmail.com Follow Poster Boys on Instagram @posterboyspod and TikTok @posterboyspod Hosted on Acast. A decision by the council executive to defer a meeting of the Ennis 2040 board has been slammed by an outgoing public representative. Ennis 2040 DAC, Chief Operating Officer Kevin Corrigan was due to appear before the council on Monday, but the engagement was cancelled by Council CEO Pat Dowling as it clashed with the visit of Minister Heather Humphrey's. Councillors expressed concern the meeting would not take place until after the local elections, but it has since been rescheduled for next Wednesday. Former Mayor of Ennis and Fine Gael Councillor Johnny believes the episode was an erosion of democracy.

A proposal that would allow data centers, advanced manufacturing and other uses on a 622-acre site adjacent to the White Oak Technology Park in Sandston appears headed for its third deferral when the Henrico Planning Commission meets later this week. The White Oak Technology Park 2 proposal, from Richmond-based developer Hourigan, is scheduled to be heard at the March 14 Henrico Planning Commission meeting, but in a staff report, Henrico planners recommended that it be deferred for a third time in three months “to allow more time for the applicant to improve their request.” Hourigan last week requested that deferral,...Article LinkSupport the show

I realise now that episode 1 of season 1 also started with the institution of ‘school' in some ways , but oh well, at least I'm consistent! Ep 1 is talking about craft schools, mainly, but also what it means to have a craft education. What's it for? What has it missed out? What does it promise? In the US, many of craft schools were made possible through the GI Bill, a state fund from the mid 40s that supported initiatives and education for returning veterans. Seems kind of unlikely in our current climate, but much of this government money was funnelled into craft and art education. A well known beneficiary might be Black Mountain College. Other schools like Penland School of Craft, and Worcester Craft Center began life as schools for European colonial-settler women to learn and perpetuate handcrafts to make a living. Both of these origins struck me as interesting, as, whilst we're obviously acknowledging the whiteness and colonialism that is inherent to this narrative, the schools were arguably set up with a social directive. The looming beast of capitalism means that the utopian promise of craft suggested by the likes of William Morris, Bernard Leach, or – in this episode – MC Richards, doesn't really operate that way, but I loved this idea. That if we look at the underpinnings of what craft education can offer us, and how it's operated in society, it offers us a way of being in the world that centres: people, environment, community, and not: profit, extraction and indoctrination into a failed state. Anyone interested….?Contributors:Michelle Millar Fisher https://michellemillarfisher.com/Tom O'Malley, director Worcester Craft Centre https://worcestercraftcenter.org/Sara Clugage https://dilettantearmy.com/Fabio Fernandez, director Greenwich House Pottery https://www.greenwichhouse.org/pottery/Clay Commons was written and produced by Eva Masterman, editing supported by Travis Roush. Since the early 1980's, there has been a ban on gay and bisexual men donating blood. Until now. In just a matter of weeks, Bloodworks Northwest will implement new guidelines set down by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, allowing gay and bisexual men to donate. At the Vancouver Donor Center in the the Portland Metro area, Dylan Smith and his partner Juan Gonzalez plan to be the first in line. Bloodworks 101 producer John Yeager sat down with these two young men to discuss why blood donation is so important to them. For Dylan it's easy - he works for Bloodworks. But there's more. Much more.

As of January, Bloodworks Northwest now has access to as many as one thousand new donors in the Pacific Northwest simply because an FDA deferral is being lifted. As Bloodworks 101 producer John Yeager tells us, that's because new evidence has led the FDA to remove the deferral requirement associated with time spent in the U.K., France, and Ireland due to the risk of vCJD also known as Mad Cow Disease. This comes as music to the ears of donor James Bancroft and as Bancroft can tell you - it's about time.

I hope this inspires you because it greatly motivated me as a female runner and excites me about the future we have in utilizing our voices more and continuing to fight for change! ___________________________________________________________________________________________ Get in touch with Fiona / coaching by Fiona: @englishruns www.englishruns.com ___________________________________________________________________________________________ Questions? In episode 149, I spoke with Fiona English who posted an open letter to the Boston Marathon in January 2023 to ask them to review their deferral policy, for women like herself who earned a Boston Qualifying (BQ) entry before becoming pregnant. The Boston marathon and the qualifying time is held in high regard globally. After running 17 marathons, through hard work and determination, she qualified running a BQ time at Paris Marathon in April 2022 running 3:27:05, after running 5:47 for her first marathon. When this podcast was recorded, the Boston Athletic Association (B.A.A.) policy had a strict no deferral policy. However during the recording of the podcast unbeknownst to Fiona and I, the B.A.A. posted on Instagram noting they changed their policy to allow for entry deferral post pregnancy. This is thanks to everyone that spoke following the post, but more importantly the pioneers before that made this final push possible. There's definitely more that needs to be done, one of those things is focused on the remaining three marathon majors, to follow suit in having progressive deferral policies. Experts tell us that on January 18th, 2023, Bloodworks Northwest could have access to as many as one thousand new donors in the Pacific Northwest simply because an FDA deferral is being lifted. As Bloodworks 101 producer John Yeager tells us, that's because new evidence has led the FDA to remove the deferral requirement associated with time spent in the U.K., France, and Ireland due to the risk of vCJD also known as Mad Cow Disease.
Tax Deferral and Risk Management for your Company with Ed Bryan It is not often that I get to dive into a topic that is totally foreign to me when we start the podcast. Usually, I have heard something about the topic and have a little knowledge. The 831(b) plan was a new thing – and Ed Bryan joins me to help us understand this tax deferral and risk management opportunity. Topics Mentioned: Insurance Tax deferral Risk management Plan Key Thoughts: It's like traditional insurance. But what you're doing is building up this money, we always say with the 831B plans, they're not worth anything when we set them up. There are no funds, and there are no assets in there initially, but after two, three, four, or five years, these things have the potential to be worth millions of dollars. Ed Bryan (15:42) I think that would be important to know how you are taxed in order to determine how much you're trying to put into an 831B plan, whether you're really trying to use it for long-term savings in some ways, or if you're really using it to mitigate risk. Michele (27:22) We've seen a significant upswing in the last three to five years in business owners looking for real cybersecurity insurance that covers things like phishing, social engineering, and those types of things. And we're seeing a lot of pressure there, because unfortunately, people that are attacking, especially those, those hackers and cybersecurity criminals, they know that small to midsize business doesn't necessarily have the awareness in the cybersecurity that a fortune 500 company does. Ed Bryan (31:55) Even in my coaching and consulting practice I work with my clients, I'm talking to their accountants with them, I'm talking to their bookkeepers, their financial analysts like we're working together, because everybody has a piece of the puzzle. He first ventured into real estate investing as a way of chucking his 9 to 5 job and allowing himself the freedom to travel and live his life without corporate obligations. Passive real estate income has allowed him to explore and adventure, without the need for full-time, hands-on management. Though he made a decent profit, he was frustrated by government taxing and only retaining limited gain. However, through using 1031 exchange or through moving into his real estate investments, he was able to maximize profits and build his real estate empire across four sites without paying a penny in capital gains tax. This episode kicks off with a brief conversation about Alex and Graham's first webinar for Clear Admit+ subscribers. It was a fun and intimate event, allowing your hosts to provide direct feedback on specific subscriber questions. The second Clear Admit+ webinar is scheduled for Monday, August 29. More details on Clear Admit+ are here: https://www.clearadmit.com/clearadmit-plus-members/ Beyond ClearAdmit+ news, Graham highlighted the recently published UPenn / Wharton class profile. Wharton is the first school to announce their class profile this season, and it certainly includes some impressive numbers. One element that your hosts neglected to mention is the drop in application volume (14%), which will likely be a feature of most class profiles for this season. Graham then noted how we are closing in on the start of next season's early deadlines, which begin at the end of August. He also noted a Real Numbers piece on the percentage of women in MBA classes. Wharton leads the way at 52% (this has now dropped slightly to 50% with the new incoming class) with Northwestern / Kellogg close behind. USC / Marshall, which had been the first top program with more than 50% female students, has dropped back to 36%. Graham also highlighted an upcoming webinar, scheduled for August 17, which brings together alumni from top programs who now work at firms like Microsoft and Deloitte to talk about their MBA journey. As usual, this episode features assessments of three real candidates, taken from ApplyWire entries on the site. First up we have a candidate who is originally from India, and now works in the oil and gas industry with an interest in seeking out sustainable solutions for less developed communities (based on their own childhood experience). The dilemma they face is whether they should retake their GMAT and push their applications to Round 2, or apply in Round 1 with a 720 GMAT score. We discuss the pros and cons, and also highlight an alternative pathway. Our second candidate works in the sports and entertainment sector for a consulting firm, and is a sponsored MBA prospect. They are planning to retake the GMAT (currently at 680) and are weighing whether they should discuss their outside-of-work experiences in sports betting. Finally we have a military candidate who is going to apply with 10 years of experience, much of this with the special forces. They plan to retake the GRE and potentially take HBS CORe. Their main question revolves around the process of deferral, and whether they can apply this season with the aim to defer to the following season. This episode was recorded in Paris, France and Cornwall, England. It was produced and engineered by Dennis Crowley in the City of Brotherly Love. Thanks for listening!
