In a recent episode, we discussed part one of the establishment's sudden response to Trump's unexpected presidency in January 2017. Today, we run through part two of the timeline as it simply could not be encompassed in one show. As we noted previously, the hard reality is that the Intelligence Community, the Obama administration, and the political establishment never expected Trump to win. And when he did win, the intelligence community was suddenly faced with a very real problem. How do they cover up their actions? Their answer was to set out to destroy Trump's presidency. Or at least fatally hobble, or even cripple, the new Trump administration. As we stated in our previous show, the timeline of the establishment's actions in the first few months of 2017 tells the story of an establishment response to the very real threat that the young Trump administration presented to the long-standing, and corrupt, political structure of our nation. By way of quick recap, events were set in motion during a Jan. 5 meeting in Obama's office that included FBI Director James Comey, Deputy Attorney General Sally Yates, Vice President Joe Biden, and national security adviser rSusan Rice. Comey's first action was to tell Congress on Jan. 10, 2017, that he could neither confirm nor deny an investigation into Trump—despite privately telling Trump that he was not under investigation. In today's episode I speak with Helam Gebremariam who is a Litigation Partner at Cravath, Swain, & Moore in New York City where her practice focuses on antitrust litigation, contractual disputes, securities and shareholder derivative suits, and investigations. She is also deeply committed to doing pro bono work and serves as an Executive Board Member of the New York University Law Alumni of Color Association, as a member of the Board of Directors of the Immigrant Justice Corps, and on the Board of Trustees of the Vera Institute of Justice. She is the first Black woman litigation partner in the Firm's history. Helam began her legal career as a law clerk to Judge Robert Patterson, Jr. of the Southern District of New York and then after spending several years as an associate at Cravath worked at the U.S. Department of Justice as Senior Counsel in the DOJ's Office for Access to Justice and then as Senior Counsel to Deputy Attorney General Sally Yates. She then worked at WilmerHale in Washington, D.C. before rejoining Cravath in 2019 where she was elected to the partnership in 2020. She now serves as partner liaison to the Firm's African American/Black Affinity Group and as a Member of the Firm's Pro Bono Committee. She is a first-generation student who graduated from Columbia and NYU Law where she served as Editor-in-Chief of the NYU Law Review. SENATE GOP SET TO RAMP UP OBAMA-ERA PROBESPolitical Analyst // author of Founders Revolution MICHAEL LAW: Senate Republicans are preparing to ramp up their Obama-era probes, pushing the controversial investigations back into the spotlight as the 2020 election heats up. The efforts have sparked high-profile tensions with Senate Democrats and public rebukes from former Vice President Joe Biden’s orbit. They view the efforts as an attempt to meddle in the 2020 election, where Biden is the presumptive Democratic nominee. But with the Senate coming back to Washington on Monday, and the number of legislative days quickly dwindling, Republicans are preparing to step up their efforts. "In July we will be having some public hearings. ...There's a lot to be done between now and September,” Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) said during a social media Q&A, adding that he would “investigate the investigators.” Graham specifically singled out former Deputy Attorney General Sally Yates, saying he wants her to testify about a Jan. 5, 2017 White House meeting, which has been an area of interest for Republicans. At the meeting, then-President Obama and then-FBI Director James Comey discussed sharing national security information related to Russia with incoming national security advisor Michael Flynn.
