Terrain Minerals Limited executive director Justin Virgin talked with Proactive's Stephen Gunnion about the company's current exploration efforts and forward plans across its Western Australia and Queensland projects. Virgin began by outlining Terrain's ongoing 3,500-metre drill program at the Monza and Lightning prospects, which form part of the Smokebush project. He highlighted the presence of strong gold and silver results, including “11 metres at 6 grams and 43 grams silver at Lightning” and follow-up drilling that has identified “two parallel structures... with potential for more.” The current campaign includes 17 holes, and Virgin noted that drilling is ongoing. He also detailed progress at Larin's Lane, a gallium and rare earths project situated nearby. Gallium is a critical material used in semiconductors, LEDs, and magnet motors. “There is no AI or quantum computing without gallium,” Virgin said, adding that the market is dominated by China, which controls 98% of global supply. Terrain's early-stage exploration has defined a JORC exploration target on just 5% of the prospective area, with recoverable gallium in clay regolith. The company has also recently secured the Biloela Copper & Gold Project in Queensland, a historic tenement with multiple mineralisation styles and rock chips up to 9% copper. A $1.8 million rights issue is underway, supported by the board, to fund continued drilling and development across key projects. For more interviews and updates, visit Proactive's YouTube channel. Critical minerals are required for the manufacturing of electronics, aerospace equipment, medical devices, and renewable energy technologies, making them essential for a country's economic and national security. These materials have been at the center of China's domestic and foreign policy for many decades, and China's ability to integrate internal industrial policies with foreign trade and investment policies has allowed them to gain dominance in the market. Meanwhile, the US has lagged behind China in terms of both access to and processing technology of critical minerals. The country has been heavily dependent on China for its critical minerals and struggles to find an alternative supplier.China's announcement to impose export restrictions on seven rare earth elements on April 4th has opened many conversations surrounding critical minerals, especially regarding the US and its supply chain vulnerabilities. What has China done to achieve their global dominance in the critical minerals sector, and what can the US do to address the overdependence issue they are facing today? To answer these questions and more, host Bonnie Glaser is joined by Gracelin Baskaran, the director of the Critical Minerals Security Program at the Center for Strategic and International Studies. Over time, mining evolved from a necessity for tools and pigments to a strategic industry powering economies and military advancements. This deep historical perspective highlights how mining has always been a fundamental pillar of technological and societal progress. The geopolitical importance of critical minerals – Modern warfare and advanced technology rely heavily on strategic metals like gallium, germanium, and antimony. These elements are essential for electronic warfare, radar systems, night vision devices, and missile guidance. The Chinese government, recognizing this decades ago, secured global mining and processing dominance, putting Western nations in a vulnerable position as they scramble to reestablish domestic supply chains. The rise of drone warfare and EMP defense systems – Military strategy is shifting toward drone swarms, where thousands of small, cheap, AI-powered drones can overwhelm traditional defense systems. This has led to the development of countermeasures like EMP-based defense systems, including the Leonidas program, which uses gallium nitride to disable enemy electronics. This new battlefield dynamic underscores the urgent need for securing critical mineral supplies to maintain technological superiority.China's long-term strategy in resource dominance – Unlike Western nations, where election cycles dictate short-term decision-making, China has played the long game in securing mineral resources. Through initiatives like the Belt and Road, they have locked down raw materials while perfecting the refining process, making them indispensable to global supply chains. Their recent export bans on gallium and germanium show how resource control can be weaponized for geopolitical leverage.Ethical mining and the future of clean extraction – Mining has long been associated with environmental destruction and poor labor conditions, but advances in technology and corporate responsibility are changing that. Major mining companies are now prioritizing ethical sourcing, reducing emissions, and improving worker safety. Blockchain-based tracking systems are also helping verify supply chain integrity, ensuring that materials come from environmentally and socially responsible sources. The vulnerability of supply chains and the need for resilience – The West's reliance on outsourced mineral processing has created significant weaknesses in national security. A disruption—whether through trade restrictions, political instability, or sabotage—can cripple industries dependent on rare materials. A key takeaway is the need for a “bulletproof supply chain,” where critical materials are sourced, processed, and manufactured within allied nations to mitigate risk.AI, decentralization, and the next era of industrial warfare – As AI becomes more embedded in military decision-making and logistics, the balance between centralization and decentralization is being redefined. AI-driven drones, automated mining, and predictive supply chain management are reshaping how nations prepare for conflict. However, this also introduces risks, as AI operates within unpredictable “black boxes,” potentially leading to unintended consequences in warfare and resource management.

Interview withMichael Walshe, Managing Director & CEO, MTM Critical Metals& Steve Ragiel, President, Flash Metals USARecording date: 21st of January, 2025MTM Critical Metals is advancing a breakthrough flash joule heating technology for metal recovery and mineral processing, originally developed at Rice University. The company holds exclusive global licenses for applying this technology to mineral ores and metal-containing scrap materials. The technology enables selective recovery of critical metals more efficiently than traditional methods, dramatically reducing processing steps and energy consumption. In lithium extraction from spodumene, for example, the process can achieve in minutes what traditionally takes three hours in a kiln, while producing a purer product.MTM is initially targeting high-value metals including lithium, rare earth elements, gallium, germanium, and indium. The addressable market for gallium, indium, and germanium alone exceeds $10 billion annually, while the e-scrap market represents a $70 billion opportunity. The technology's "feedstock agnostic" nature allows MTM to pivot between different metals based on market conditions. The company is finalizing the design of a one-ton-per-day modular pilot plant, scheduled for completion in February 2025. This plant will demonstrate the process on five different feedstocks: spodumene, monazite, niobium, antimony, and e-scrap. The modular design enables smaller-scale, distributed production with significantly lower capital requirements - approximately $10-20 million compared to $400-700 million for traditional rare earth refining plants.MTM's most advanced commercial partnership is an MOU with Indium Corp. to recover gallium, germanium, and indium from manufacturing scrap. The company's revenue model combines licensing fees, processing fees, and a share of recovered metal value. Even at one ton per day, the pilot plant could address a significant portion of US gallium demand, estimated at 400-500 tons annually. The company has secured investment from Pengana Capital and is pursuing partnerships with the US Department of Defense and Department of Energy. These align with government initiatives to secure domestic critical metal supply chains and reduce dependence on imports, particularly from China.MTM's technology is particularly relevant given the growing demand for critical metals in clean energy technologies and the urgent need for secure supply chains. The company's modular, efficient approach to metal recovery could play a crucial role in establishing distributed, domestic production capacity for these essential materials. The technology offers several key advantages: faster reaction times, lower energy use, reduced acid consumption, selective metal recovery, scalable modular production, and lower capital requirements compared to traditional methods.Learn more: https://www.cruxinvestor.com/companies/mtm-critical-metalsSign up for Crux Investor: https://cruxinvestor.com

Proactive's Tylah Tully breaks down ‘Just the Facts' of the latest news from Eclipse Metals Ltd (ASX:EPM). Eclipse Metals is progressing efforts to expand the rare earth elements (REE) resource at the Grønnedal prospect, part of the Ivigtût Project in southwestern Greenland. The current inferred resource is 1.18 million tonnes, containing 8,070 tonnes of total rare earth oxides (TREO). The company is re-estimating the mineral resource estimate by analysing historical drill core samples from a small section of the rare earth-enriched carbonatite complex, which accounts for only 5% of the potential mineralised area. Six samples will undergo x-ray fluorescent analysis to validate and refine resource data. Additionally, the TESCAN Integrated Mineral Analyser will align chemical and mineralogical information to enhance understanding of resource quality and distribution. Eclipse has defined a conceptual exploration target for Grønnedal of 175–245 million tonnes of REE mineralisation with grades between 6,000 and 7,000 ppm TREO. Results from these analyses are expected in the first quarter of 2025, after which the company will initiate drill targeting and planning in a bid to further classify and expand the resource.

Welcome to Top of the Morning by Mint, your weekday newscast that brings you five major stories from the world of business. It's Friday, November 15, 2024. This is Nelson John, let's get started. China's export restrictions are hurting the Indian economy. Essential materials like Germanium and Gallium have been banned from being exported from China, and are crucial for solar panel and electric vehicle production. Dhirendra Kumar and Utpal Bhaskar report that Indian companies are trying a workaround by rerouting these minerals and other critical machinery through Dubai. However, this proves to be costly as prices have increased by 10% and timelines are delayed by months. Such tactics also further widen India's trade deficit with China, draining foreign exchange. If your company does any business in the US, you're probably thinking about the implications of Donald Trump's return to the big seat. Law firms are inundated with similar queries. Krishna Yadav writes that law firms are advising their clients to include protective clauses in contracts such as 'Force Majeure' and 'Material Adverse Change'. They are worried that Trump's 'America First' policy can complicate investments as well as invite widespread scrutiny. Cross-border deals might then come to a halt until there's further clarity on international policy. It seems that automakers ar a rare breed — they don't want any subsidies. The government's ₹26,000 crore PLI scheme has only found takers for subsidies worth ₹500 crore so far. Alisha Sachdev reports that these companies are Tata Motors, Mahindra, Toyota, and Ola Electric. Primarily, the 50% domestic value requirement poses a major challenge for them, as they can't qualify for the scheme. Claims are likely to increase next financial year, when other automakers are more compliant and have bigger expansion plans. Would you let a robotic arm, controlled by artificial intelligence, operate on you? Leslie D'monte writes that an autonomous AI surgeon named the da Vinci robot is now on the market. It has been trained through imitation learning, like most other AI models. It could potentially revolutionize surgical procedures by replicating complex tasks such as suturing and tissue manipulation. Challenges include precision, cost, and regulatory compliance. And since these devices are entirely digital, a single cyberattack could prove to be quite harmful. Maharashtra is gearing up for its first state election since the split of its two key regional parties—the Nationalist Congress Party and Shiv Sena. With the second highest number of parliamentary seats in the country, it is a politically crucial state. Between the Mahayuti government and opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi, populist schemes and promises have taken centre stage to mobilize voters. In a state, where unemployment and rural distress are key electoral issues, will this guarantee a win?

Engage to support our work.Devin: What is your superpower?Eric: My superpower is really the ability to communicate. I'm a marketing person.Mivium, led by CEO Eric Tsai, is pioneering a new wave in semiconductor technology with gallium nitride (GaN), a material poised to replace silicon in a variety of applications. GaN not only increases efficiency but also reduces energy consumption in devices, a benefit that's especially valuable as AI and data centers grow in demand. “Our process keeps our production output clean, and we don't use toxic materials,” Eric explained. This shift addresses the environmental and health issues plaguing traditional semiconductor production. The company's unique GaN production technique offers substantial benefits, from fast-switching properties to downsized device components. “GaN has a fast-switching property... and it can perform double as fast and better,” Eric said, adding that it's currently being used in chargers, with plans to expand into data centers where it can dramatically cut energy usage. These advantages make Mivium's gallium nitride a significant contender in the drive toward sustainable tech.In a promising move for both the business and potential investors, Mivium is raising capital through a regulated investment crowdfunding campaign on Equifund. This approach allows everyday investors to support groundbreaking tech, which Eric himself champions as a crowdfunding advocate. By sharing Mivium's journey with the public, he aims to democratize early-stage investment opportunities, giving people a chance to invest in future tech with high social and environmental value. As Mivium's crowdfunding progresses, it may inspire tech enthusiasts and impact investors alike to support a cleaner, more efficient semiconductor future.Explore GaN chargers on Amazon.tl;dr:* Eric Tsai's Mivium focuses on gallium nitride (GaN) to replace silicon, improving efficiency and sustainability.* GaN's fast-switching properties make devices smaller, more powerful, and less energy-intensive.* Mivium's unique, clean GaN production process avoids the toxic materials typical in semiconductors.* Nevada's tech-friendly policies support Mivium's plans to establish a new “gallium valley” in Reno.* By crowdfunding, Eric brings everyday investors into Mivium's journey, making early-stage investing accessible. How to Develop Effective Communication As a SuperpowerEric's superpower is his ability to communicate complex ideas in relatable ways. As a seasoned marketing professional, he has mastered the art of translating technical concepts into simple analogies that resonate with diverse audiences, especially in high-tech fields like semiconductors. This skill allows him to bridge gaps in understanding, helping people grasp the value and impact of innovations, even without specialized knowledge. In today's episode, Eric shared how he explains the intricate science behind Mivium's gallium nitride (GaN) technology. Comparing GaN to "flour" for baking, he helps people visualize Mivium's product as a better alternative to silicon. By presenting the science as an everyday item, he enables audiences to connect with Mivium's mission. This analogy makes it easier for potential investors and customers to understand GaN's advantages, such as improved energy efficiency, which contributes to a cleaner, more sustainable tech future.Tips for Developing Effective Communication as a Superpower:* Think from the Other Person's Perspective: Approach communication by considering the audience's interests and needs. Tailor your message so they feel you genuinely care about them and their concerns.* Use Analogies to Simplify Complex Ideas: Find familiar comparisons, like Eric's “flour” analogy, to help people understand technical or abstract concepts.* Tell a Compelling Story: Craft your messaging as a narrative. A good story resonates more and helps audiences remember your message.* Conduct Surveys and Gather Feedback: Regularly survey customers and prospects to ensure your message aligns with their needs and experiences, making necessary adjustments to improve clarity.By following Eric Tsai's example and advice, you can make effective communication a skill. With practice and effort, you could make it a superpower that enables you to do more good in the world.Remember, however, that research into success suggests that building on your own superpowers is more important than creating new ones or overcoming weaknesses. You do you!Guest ProfileEric Tsai (he/him):CEO, Mivium, Inc.About Mivium, Inc.: Mivium develops advanced semiconductor materials to meet the current and future needs of society. Critical minerals are non-fuel minerals or mineral materials essential to the economic or national security of the U.S. They have no viable substitutes yet face a high risk of supply chain disruption. Critical minerals are used for many different purposes, including the production of advanced electronics, weapons systems, manufacturing equipment, and cutting-edge medical devices. They are indispensable for the transition to low-carbon energy sources. Last year, the U.S. Secretary of the Interior, with the aid of the U.S. Geological Survey, published a list of 50 critical minerals. China dominates global critical mineral supply chains, accounting for approximately 60% of world-wide production and 85% of processing capacity. However, the U.S. and several European countries are taking steps to build out their own ability to mine, process, and manufacture critical minerals. To discuss the implications of China's role in critical mineral supply chains and the responses of the U.S. and its partners, host Bonnie Glaser is joined by Abigail Wulf, vice president and director of the Ambassador Alfred Hoffman Jr. Center for Critical Minerals Strategy at Securing America's Future Energy (SAFE), a non-profit advancing transformative transportation technology to enhance energy security. Time Stamps[01:51] Vulnerabilities and Risks of Overdependence [07:07] Development of a Domestic Mining Industry [12:42] Environmental Hazards of Processing Raw Minerals [18:30] Impact of Export Controls on Gallium and Germanium[22:53] Diversifying Sources of Rare Earth Imports[26:38] The Critical Raw Materials Act[29:58] The Mineral Security Partnership

Christopher Grove: How China Manipulates the Rare Earth Market to it’s Advantage

Christopher Grove, President and Director of Commerce Resources, returns to the show as an expert on the rare earth element market. Electric motors are just one of the many users of rare earth magnets. China accounts for 70% of mining production and 85% of global processing capacity may be attempting to accumulate various rare earth projects around the world, leading to suggestions of manipulation. After a September 2010 incident between a Chinese fishing vessel and Japanese coast guard ships, China retaliated by cutting off supply of metals to Japan, prompting foreign companies to set up manufacturing within China to take advantage of the metals; this consequently made China the world's dominant magnet manufacturer. The largest chip manufacturers are in Taiwan and, due to U.S. involvement, China is considering restricting exports of gallium and germanium; these two metals are key for semiconductor production. Despite no longer being able to internally source enough rare earth elements, China is still the largest processor, allowing them to become a net importer while maintaining their market position. Monazite, a mineral feedstock containing other key rare earth elements, is another area of interest for Christopher. With China being an enormous importer of mineral sands, slightly radioactive in nature, they take advantage of the fact that these sands aren't being restricted like in other countries. Christopher is excited to watch the increasing demand for niobium-oxide, a material useful in battery manufacturing. He also explains some extraction methods--such as the use of solvents--and how technology is improving in an effort to make the process cheaper, less dangerous, and more eco-friendly. China imports large quantities of monazite from mineral sands, which are not as strictly regulated as in other countries. New extraction methods make rare earth extraction cheaper, safer, and more environmentally friendly, and there is an increasing demand for niobium-oxide for battery production. A good day to you, ladies and gentlemen. Welcome to The Wright Report, your daily news podcast. A wonderful holiday week to you all. I hope your Fourth of July celebrations were great. So for the rest of this week, folks, I'll be offering you short briefs that we'll dive into further next week. But we'll just cover the essentials for now. In Europe this morning, the leaders of Ukraine and Russia are both saying there will be an attack on Ukraine's nuclear power plant later today. Next, the fight between China and the US is heating up, with Beijing announcing yesterday that it would restrict the export of two key rare earth minerals Also on the International front, Mexicans in the United States just sent back a record amount of remittances home to Mexico — $5.6B in May, in fact. That raises the issue of whether some of that should be taxed for things like border protection services. And speaking of the border, we might have more Cubans making their way to America. That's because there's a duel crisis to tell you about this morning. First, upwards of 10% of Havana is without drinking water today, with old leaky pipes largely to blame. Second, demand for electricity is up 25%, but the grid has failed in different places throughout the country. We'll also discuss a remarkable injunction issued yesterday from a Federal Judge that blocks the White House and federal agencies from meeting and communicating with social media companies like Facebook and Twitter.

Researchers found initial phases of attacks against telecommunication providers in the Middle East in Q1 in 2023. The research states "We assess that this activity represents an evolution of tooling associated with Operation Soft Cell." While the exact grouping is unclear, researchers think it is highly likely that the threat actor is a Chinese cyberespionage group in the nexus of Gallium and APT41.
