Judicial Watch has filed a lawsuit against the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) for allegedly failing to comply with multiple Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests concerning Jeffrey Epstein's associates and clients. The conservative watchdog group submitted four FOIA requests between February and March 2025 to various DOJ components, including the Office of Information Policy, the Criminal Division, the Executive Office for U.S. Attorneys, and the FBI. These requests sought records related to Epstein's activities and communications involving Attorney General Pam Bondi and FBI Director Kash Patel regarding the handling and potential release of Epstein-related documents. Despite acknowledgments and assigned tracking numbers, Judicial Watch claims the DOJ has failed to provide the requested information or justify any withholdings, prompting the lawsuit filed on April 8, 2025, in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia. The lawsuit references a February 24, 2025, Fox News report in which Attorney General Bondi stated that Epstein's client list was "sitting on [her] desk." However, a subsequent DOJ document release on February 27, 2025, was criticized for lacking substantive revelations, as it primarily listed already known associates of Epstein. Judicial Watch argues that the DOJ's actions violate FOIA and hinder public transparency regarding Epstein's network. The organization seeks a court order compelling the DOJ to conduct thorough searches for responsive records, produce all non-exempt documents, and provide explanations for any withholdings. Additionally, Judicial Watch requests that the court enjoin the DOJ from further withholding non-exempt records and award attorney's fees and litigation costs incurred due to the DOJ's non-compliance.to contact me:bobbycapucci@protonmail.comsource:DOJ allegedly violating FOIA over Jeffrey Epstein files

This is Part 12 in the series that covers the story of Billy Sol Estes, Mac Wallace, Bobby Baker and other members of Johnson's Texas inner circle. Part 12 continues  the story of Billy Sol Estes and addresses the episode which occurred in 1984 when Estes balked after agreeing to tell all to the Department of Justice. Estes had just gotten out of prison for the second time and was pursuing a book deal through the Moody Foundation when he hooked up with prominent Washington attorney Douglas Caddy.  The book deal was lucrative and Estes may have needed the money.  But he also needed immunity because he was going to discuss murders....lots of them, including the murder of JFK. After being boxed in at the Marshall grand jury proceedings by DA John Paschall, Estes had to make lemons out of his lemonades.  Listen in on what happened...and how Estes balked at the last minute after striking a deal with the assistant U.S. attorney of the Criminal Division at the Department of Justice. Hear Douglas Caddy tell much of the story in his own words. Caddy, a prominent Washington attorney took up the cause, but he too would be hoodwinked by Estes, when Estes at the last moment, refused to meet with the  FBI and justice department officials. All of these  men who were quite intertwined around Johnson at the time of the assassination. They  were involved in circumstances that were closing in on Johnson too and that provided him great motive in the killing of the President.  The story is extraordinary.  Rumors of Johnson's involvement began to swirl almost immediately after the President's assassination and there is a defined school of thought within the JFK assassination research community that staunchly believes in Johnson's involvement. His involvement  in both the assassination and its cover up. Join us in one of the most fascinating story tells of the Kennedy assassination and stick around as we will be returning to the Mexico City series right after we complete this min-series that was spawned by the recent release of the Billy Sol Estes and Cliff Carter tape that the two recorded in 1971. Folks, you just can't write this stuff. Even as early as 1964, rumors and serious concerns over  the lone gunman theory and the evidence that might contravene it,  were becoming a major concern for the government and the commission. Conspiracy theories were contrary to the government's stated narrative from the very beginning. This  real-life story is more fascinating than fiction.  No matter whether you are a serious researcher or a casual student, you will enjoy the fact filled narrative and story as  we relive one of the most shocking moments in American History. An event that changed the nation and changed the world forever.

Harry talks to Kristy Greenberg, former Deputy Chief of the Criminal Division in the Southern District of New York, about the burgeoning scandal involving the resignation of the acting United States Attorney and multiple other officials in her office and at Main Justice. The resignations all come in response to an improper command by the acting deputy Attorney General, Emile Bove, to dismiss charges against New York Mayor Eric Adams, notwithstanding that there is no question about the righteousness – i.e. the solid facts and law –that undergird the prosecution. Through Greenberg's experience in the Southern District and Harry's at Main Justice, they are able to piece together what has happened behind the scenes to date and what may transpire in the future, and all of it pits Bove, Bondi and Trump on the wrong side of the rule of law and Sassoon and Company on the right side. Long-term care providers and others have felt the sting of False Claims Act litigation more than they ever cared to through the years, but now there's a new, even more potent “whistleblower” program that could produce even more aggressive legal problems for providers. It's called the Corporate Whistleblower Awards pilot program and it started quietly in August. Despite the “pilot” in its name, one expert warns the label merely means federal officials are in the process of honing it to make it even more polished and lethal by the time it comes to determine whether to make it permanent. Paul Werner, a principal attorney with Buttaci, Leardi & Werner, explains that the new pilot is being conducted under the auspices of the Criminal DIvision of the US Department of Justice. It is “quite a bit more” than the False Claims Act, he says, for a couple of reasons. First, it doesn't limit its scope to federal healthcare payers and second, it focuses on allegations in a criminal — as opposed to civil — light. “I think anything the government openly describes as a ‘bounty program' should be concerning to anybody,” Werner tells McKnight's Executive Editor James M. Berklan in this McKnight's Newsmakers podcast. A veteran provider defense attorney who has dealt with various federal agencies for years, Werner delves into nuances of the new program especially pertinent for long-term care providers. He details who might be most likely targeted, and how, as well as how providers can steer clear of prosecution. He also discusses when the first accusations probably will be announced, making this a must-listen episode for anyone working in the sector.

The United Nations and World Economic Forum calculates that the cost of corporate corruption globally is $5 trillion a year, or 5% of the world's 2022 GDP. Corruption can hamper economic growth by discouraging investment, increasing transaction costs, and distorting market competition. It can perpetuate poverty by diverting resources away from essential services and benefiting the wealthy and powerful. It can undermine democratic institutions and erode public trust in governments. It can hinder sustainable development by diverting resources away from essential infrastructure and social services. The Foreign Corrupt Practices Act, or the FCPA – the government's leading weapon in this global war on corporate crime – has far-reaching implications for companies engaged in international business. For those who violate it the consequences can be severe. And with the recent addition of the Foreign Extortion Prevention Act (FEPA), the federal government has even more to work with. I had the pleasure of learning more about this fascinating and complex area of the law by speaking with two attorneys with Reed Smith who practice in the firm's Global Regulatory Enforcement Group. Mark E. Bini is a former federal and state prosecutor in New York, has led multiple multi-year cross-border investigations of corporations and individuals and has particular experience in investigations involving potential Foreign Corrupt Practices Act (FCPA) violations. As a prosecutor, he worked closely and in parallel with many domestic and foreign law enforcement agencies and regulators, including the United Kingdom's Financial Conduct Authority and Brazil's Ministerio Publico Federal.Thomas H. Suddath, Jr., is a former Assistant U.S. Attorney in the Criminal Division of the U.S. Attorney's Office in Philadelphia, has extensive experience conducting international and domestic internal investigations and frequently counsels companies on compliance and voluntary disclosure issues related to the FCPA. He has handled FCPA and other internal investigations in many countries including Russia, Poland, Turkey, Greece, Hungary, Czech Republic, Mexico and Colombia. Thanks to Mark and Tom for sharing their insights based on decades of experience. *******This podcast is the audio companion to the Journal of Emerging Issues in Litigation. Laura continues her interview with Josiah's warrior mom, Liz Hilderbrand. Two men, James and Donovan Cloud, were arrested and in custody by Monday 10th June for the White Swan Murders which took place on Saturday 8th June 2019. With the discovery of Josiah and John's skeletal remains, Liz believed charges would follow. That didn't happen.   A plea deal was offered to James and Donovan Cloud. It was taken by Donovan Cloud. rWotD Episode 2575: Apocalypse Production Crew Welcome to random Wiki of the Day where we read the summary of a random Wikipedia page every day.The random article for Wednesday, 22 May 2024 is Apocalypse Production Crew.Apocalypse Production Crew (styled as aPOCALYPSE pRODUCTION cREW or aPC) was a major MP3 warez organization founded by two individuals known under the pseudonyms acid^rain and Viper in May 1997. aPC operated well into the mid-2000s and was subject to raid during Operation Fastlink—a coordination of four separate simultaneous undercover investigations by the FBI, the FBI Cyber Division, the U. S. Department of Justice, the Computer Crimes and Intellectual Property Section (CCIPS) of the Criminal Division and Interpol. aPC was known to many as the first organized group to put mp3s onto the internet. Their efforts predated the scene and started with composing MIDI versions of popular songs. On August 21, 2003, Mark Shumaker (known by the pseudonym markalso), pleaded guilty to violating copyright laws and became the first federal criminal prosecution of someone who specialized in music piracy after having been raided in Operation Buccaneer. Shumaker was previously a leader of aPC, but at the time of the raid, he had retired his role. No members of aPC were raided as a part of Operation Buccaneer. They would five years later, however, be raided in Operation Fastlink which caused the disbanding of the group. This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 00:27 UTC on Wednesday, 22 May 2024.For the full current version of the article, see Apocalypse Production Crew on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm Russell Standard.

What happens when you buy somebody else's problems? A new policy from the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) is encouraging companies to disclose the misconduct of the companies they buy. The DOJ says it won't prosecute businesses that voluntarily report wrongdoing found during the mergers and acquisitions process. The government especially wants to detect misconduct that threatens national security or involves cybersecurity or foreign corruption. But detractors say the new rule could give a free pass to corporate crime. How do businesses know exactly what they should self-report both before and after a deal is done? And, how do they stand to benefit from the new policy? Join The Sidley Podcast host and Sidley partner, Sam Gandhi, as he speaks with one of the firm's thought leaders on these issues — Kenneth Polite. We conclude our interview with Liz Hilderbrand. She explains trying to come to terms not only with her son Josiah's murder but with the actions of the justice system to erase her son's existence from a multiple homicide. Liz recalls going to the sentencing of James and Donovan Cloud, seeing the faces of the men who took Josiah's life, and the cavalier almost jocular attitude of the courtroom. As Laura says, Josiah's case was used as a bargaining chip for prosecutors to secure a plea deal for one of the offenders. Liz also describes her shocking treatment post sentencing by the district attorney's office and their public complaint department representative who told her “she was not a victim”. Liz was denied the right to read her victim impact statement to the judge, but we are giving her the chance to read it today. Liz continues to fight to bring Josiah's case to trial. They also discuss the consequences of possible convictions in each case, including the range of potential sentences, the procedures involved in sentencing, and the likelihood that he would remain free on bond.  They also discuss the impact any potential convictions would have on his ability to remain on the ballot, possible challenges to enforcing any sentences should he win the election, and the possibility of obtaining pardons, whether by himself or President Biden for the potential federal convictions or by the Governors of New York or Georgia in the state cases. They also discuss a potential Constitutional crisis if he were to refuse to report to prison and potential solutions such as a special sentencing to home detention or delayed prison time until after presidential term.  .  Podcast Link: Law-disrupted.fmHost: John B. The FBI on Economic Espionage [Podcast]

Compliance Perspectives

Play Episode Listen Later Nov 16, 2023 12:43

By Adam Turteltaub Economic espionage sounds more like the stuff of a spy thriller than a day-to-day concern for business. Not so, as it turns out. To learn more we sat down with the FBI's Counterintelligence Division Unit Chief Matthew Charles and Cyber Division Supervisory Special Agent Michelle Liu. Economic espionage generally refers to stealing trade secrets for the benefit of an overseas competitor, often one aligned with a foreign government. An employee at your organization working on a sensitive project may be leveraged, frequently with the lure of cash and other payments. Typical targets include technology with potential military use and, of late, pharmaceuticals. To counter this threat, the FBI Cyber Division maintains partnerships with many private sector companies to identify nefarious conduct on their networks. Meantime the Counterintelligence Division looks upstream for actors coming into the US seeking access to US technology. So what should companies do? First, protect yourself. Encryption can be helpful along with limiting access to sensitive information only to key people. Make sure, too, to track who in your firm is accessing trade secrets. Also, be sensitive to unusual employee behaviors or changes in affluence levels. An employee suddenly downloading large files at night, emailing their personal email address sensitive information or whose debt problems have inexplicably disappeared could be engaged in economic espionage.  Just don't jump to any conclusions.  There could be legitimate reasons for these actions. Second, the FBI advises reaching out to them when an incident occurs. The FBI can't investigate without ongoing collaboration of the victim organization. They also advise that it is never too early to call them in, and if you do not want them there, they will pull out. Finally, take the time to leverage government resources. Be sure to familiarize yourself with the US Department of Justice's Criminal Division's Computer Crime and intellectual Property Section (CCIPS) website. You will find there information on reporting computer, internet-related or intellectual property crime. And, of course, listen in to the podcast to learn more about the risks of economic espionage and what you can do to mitigate it.

Former President Trump is facing criminal charges in Florida and New York, and indictments are reportedly likely in Fulton County, Georgia, and Washington, D.C. Two of these are in federal court; two of them are in state courts. Some have facts in common; some are seemingly unrelated. Trump is also involved in multiple civil litigations. And it looks like at least parts of these proceedings will be happening all at once. How does that work? Lawfare Executive Editor Natalie Orpett sat down with Brandon Fox, a partner at the law firm Jenner & Block and former Chief of the Criminal Division in the Central District of California, to talk through how it may all play out. They talked about the challenges Special Counsel Jack Smith's office and state prosecutors will face, how Trump's lawyers will leverage those challenges, and what judges are likely to do in response.Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/lawfare. On today's episode, Dennis speaks with former LEO and elected Judge, Eric Starnes & SCT case law instructor, Zach Miller. Eric Starnes is a conservative Republican, former law enforcement officer, and experienced prosecutor running. He is now the elected Judge of Tarrant County Criminal Court No. 7. A lifelong Texan, Starnes earned his Masters of Public Administration from the University of North Texas and his Juris Doctorate at Texas Wesleyan University. His roots in Tarrant County run deep, having served to keep his community safe for nearly three decades within the criminal justice system—both on the street and in the courts. Spending time on both sides of law enforcement has afforded Starnes a valuable perspective on justice… one that isn't learned in law school alone. During his more than 23 years of service with the Euless Police Department, he worked his way up from a patrol officer to Lieutenant of Investigations. In that capacity he oversaw the coordination of all criminal investigations, while managing a $1.6 million budget and a staff of eighteen. While in this position he testified in criminal trials on multiple occasions—providing him an experience that a vast majority of criminal lawyers do not have. This insight has served Starnes well in both his current role as a Tarrant County Assistant Criminal District Attorney, where he has worked exclusively for the last four years within the Criminal Division on both felony and misdemeanor cases. In addition to his years in private law practice, his dedication to jurisprudence has further led to his becoming both a published writer and a professor, educating students on the laws that surround the basis of the Fourth Amendment's search and seizure clause—a subject vital to the criminal court system. Experienced, Knowledgeable, Fair-minded… Eric Starnes understands the difference between being an “active” judge and an “activist” judge. He seeks to efficiently move cases through the court system—protecting taxpayer dollars and ensuring the professional and just treatment of all who enter his courtroom. Today, Dennis, Eric and Zach discuss Eric's background and career and clarify 4th Amendment case law, specifically seeking consent to search when you have PC.
