As Donald Trump's 79 year-old Secretary of Commerce, Wilbur Ross was the oldest first-time Cabinet appointee in American history. Ross' mom, however - Agnes, a lifelong New Jersey schoolteacher and proud Democrat - probably wouldn't have been proud of her boy. As he acknowledges in his new memoir, Risks and Returns, Agnes always wanted her son to attend law school and was far from thrilled when Wilbur, then known on Wall Street as the “King of Bankruptcy,” became associated with Trump over one of his notorious bankruptcies. But as Wilbur confessed to me, he's still thinking, at the grand old age of 86, of making Agnes proud by going back to law school. Although, of course, that plan might be waylaid if Trump is, indeed, elected in November and invites the Wall Street financier back into his administration. GUEST Tarun Khanna is the Jorge Paulo Lemann Professor at the Harvard Business School (HBS), where he has sought for two decades to study the drivers of entrepreneurship in emerging markets as a means of economic and social development. At HBS since 1993, after obtaining degrees from Princeton and Harvard, he has taught courses on strategy, corporate governance and international business to MBA and Ph.D. students and senior executives. For many years, he has served as the Faculty Chair for HBS activities in India and South Asia. He was named the first director of the university-wide The Lakshmi Mittal and Family South Asia Institute at Harvard in the fall of 2010. Outside HBS, he serves on numerous for-profit and not-for-profit boards in the US and India, including AES, a Washington DC headquartered global power company, and India-based Bharat Financial Inclusion Limited (BFIL), one of the world's largest firms dedicated to financial inclusion for the poor. He is a co-founder of several entrepreneurial ventures in the developing world, spanning India, China, Southeast Asia and the Middle East. “Designers must design the conditions that enable things to be created.” John Wagner and Nadyeli Quiroz, recent graduates of the Harvard Graduate School of Design, first became involved in the Kutupalong refugee camp as a part of an option studio led by prominent architect Anna Heringer. They continued their engagement in the camp even after their studio ended – marking the beginning of a research project that critically looks at spaces of migration as well as a practice that promotes a new kind of design advocacy. John David Wagner works at the convergence of public space, design, and human rights. He received an M.Arch, with Distinction, from Harvard Graduate School of Design, and was a 2020 Irving Innovation Fellow. John is currently an instructor at Wentworth Institute of Technology and a post-graduate fellow at Lakshmi Mittal and Family South Asia Institute where his research focuses on the design and production of social spaces in refugee camps. Nadyeli Quiroz is an Architect and Landscape Architect with two master’s degrees from Harvard Graduate School of Design. Currently, she is a Research Affiliate at the Lakshmi Mittal and Family South Asia Institute and the 2020 Landscape Architecture Foundation Olmsted Scholar. Her ongoing research studies urban form in its intersection to territorial ecologies on spaces of movement and displacement. She is also an adjunct professor at Wentworth Institute of Technology. Sanjay Kumar currently serves as the India Country Director of The Lakshmi Mittal and Family South Asia Institute, Harvard University. It is an entity dedicated to connecting the University with all the countries of South Asia, prompting two-way intellectual exchange and knowledge creation.Prior to this, he was involved at leadership positions with SEWA Movement for about two decades that organizes poor self-employed women workers in the informal economy in India. Handling twin task of establishing SEWA in Delhi and overseeing the work of SEWA Bharat, National Federation of SEWA organizations, as its Director, he led several programs including advocacy, microfinance, livelihoods, waste-management, government linkages and skills for youth, to name a few. As a keen photographer, his inspiring images on the lives of women workers in India was exhibited at the House of Commons, London and other locations. He is voluntarily leading Edjustice People’s Campaign to rejuvenate the state-run educational institutions.
