Today I'm going to try something new. Instead of publishing an interview that I did myself, or a Q&A where I answer your questions, I'm going to use my platform to publish an interview conducted by somebody else. Now, this requires a bit of an explanation. My friend Desh Amila, who's a filmmaker and producer, organized an event with Julian Assange in 2017. He filmed the event at the time and then forgot all about it until a few days ago when he came across the footage by coincidence. When Desh offered to publish this footage using my platform, I was hesitant at first, because I worry that publishing this on my podcast would give people the impression that I support Julian Assange's actions, or that I support WikiLeaks as an organization. So let me say this upfront - I'm agnostic about whether Julian Assange and WikiLeaks have done more good than harm for the world, as their supporters must believe. It's just not clear to me, and my publishing of this interview should not be taken by anyone as an endorsement either of him or of WikiLeaks. As all of you are aware, I'm a big defender of free speech and transparency. Therefore, you might expect that I would always take the side of the whistleblower who reveals important secrets held by governments or powerful corporations. For example: I had Frances Haugen, the Facebook whistleblower on this show just a few months ago and I gave her a very friendly interview because I thought that what she revealed about Facebook was clearly a net good for the world. However, my support for free speech and transparency in general, doesn't automatically extend to every specific release of hacked information, especially in cases where that information could hurt people. You will be able to hear more of my thoughts on Julian Assange and WikiLeaks in the introduction to the episode.-Get 20% Off and Free Shipping with the code [20COLEMAN] at Manscaped.com. Host Toby Davis sits down with Desh Amila to discuss "Better Left Unsaid", his latest film. The premise behind Better Left Unsaid, lies in the unconfined analysis of the often violent extremism of today's Western political landscape. As liberal democracy becomes increasingly challenged in the West, we expose the dangerous tactics employed by the radical-left and far-right, alike. In a world where political polarization frames the way in which we live, a new path forward of unity is needed more than ever before. Desh also exposes the tech censorship and cancel culture surrounding the release and promotion of the film. Better Left Unsaid won the "Best International Documentary Feature" at the 2021 Anthem Film Festival and was the featured film at the 2021 FAIR Film Festival. The film was produced by Desh and his company This Is 42 and written and directed by Curt Jaimungal. Today, I have the pleasure of sharing a conversation I recently had with two of the minds behind the new documentary, “Better Left Unsaid”. In this episode, I am joined by director Curt Jaimungal and producer Desh Amila. "Better Left Unsaid" is a critique of extremist political groups, with a particular focus on the extreme left. The documentary is one part modern sociopolitical analysis and one part history lesson. I had a fascinating discussion with Curt Jaimungal and Desh Amila, the creators of a new documentary called "Better Left Unsaid".  It is great to see more people concerned with our political polarization. Link below to the documentary.Better Left UnsaidBetter Left Unsaid is an independent documentary that explores the dangerous tactics of extremism across the Western political landscape. For many, extreme right-wing ideologies are easily recognized by overt racism, ethno- nationalism, white supremacy, and the like. The extreme left, on the other hand, takes on a more philosophically nuanced position, which some argue is no less harmful, but often takes on a more understated form in public discourse. Confronting, impactful and reflective, Better Left Unsaid leads viewers on a nuanced exploration of the West’s past and current political disposition, which is often overlooked in classrooms and the mainstream media alike.LinksBetter Left Unsaid Film - https://betterleftunsaidfilm.com/https://bit.ly/blu_preorderDesh Amila's Website - https://deshamila.com/Curt Jaimungal's Youtube Channel - https://www.youtube.com/c/TheoriesofEverything/Desh Amila is a documentary filmmaker and serial entrepreneur. His first documentary, Islam and the Future of Tolerance featuring Sam Harris and Maajid Nawaz, became the #1 iTunes download worldwide (Documentary Category) during its release in 2018, and can be found on Amazon Prime. In 2011, Amila founded Think Inc., a first of its kind ‘edutainment’ company that tours intellectuals throughout Australia and New Zealand. The company’s debut event was a conference held in Melbourne, featuring speakers such as astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson, historian of science Michael Shermer, political activist Ayaan Hirsi Ali, and the late socio-political critic Christopher Hitchens. In 2018, Amila sold Think Inc. and launched a new media company, This Is 42. Born in Trinidad, raised in Toronto, Curt Jaimungal became interested in filmmaking while studying mathematical physics at the University of Toronto, where he founded the largest growing club on campus, the University of Toronto Television. From humble beginnings, he began his first feature film at 26, which focused on mental health issues. I’m Okay, a film about the depression, self-hate, and suicidal ideations that follow the loss of a long- term relationship, had several screenings in Toronto even years after the film’s release. Subsequently, he became interested in philosophy and psychology while starting Toronto’s first film incubator -- indiefilmTO -- where he taught filmmakers how to overcome psychological barriers that hold them back from filmmaking. Observing increasing political extremism, Curt began to suspect there is more to what motivates the extremes than the ostensible nobleness they proclaim, sending him on a journey that has led to Better Left Unsaid.

It is about 2 people who fundamentally disagree about a very tough subject. It’s a story of how they met, where they are at now, and how to talk about difficult topics. A trailer was played on the show, you can see it at amazon, https://amzn.to/2Mvd5jw Let's move on to the callers for tonight! First up we have Sierra from the USA. They are calling in because they feel the image of god is a snake or eel. and that saying snake in chinese is just syllables away from god. Desh points out that tonality is important in mandarin and that we know that language is manmade. Next up we have Jen, in SC. Welcome to Truth Wanted. She is calling because her brother passed away at 5 years old. She was told it was an accident and she learned that it was a suicide. Dan points out that it's never a bad idea to see a therapist. Jumping on over to Jeremiah in TX. He says he watches tons of debates on YouTube and puts theists on the level of flat earthers. Claims they don’t have evidence for belief and only keep it because it makes them feel well. Desh doesn't have interactions with flat earthers, lucky for him!Last up we have Jay from UT. He calls to talk about atheists and their political leanings. From experience, he notices atheists were conservative as religious people then moved to leaning left after being an atheist.Desh has a special announcement, his movie is included with Amazon Prime Also Desh’s next project is about politics, it's called Better Left Unsaid! Desh has since pioneered his career as an entrepreneur, entertainer, and educator on a global scale. ‍ After graduating from Melbourne’s Deakin University with a Bachelor of Arts (Media Arts: Screen Studies and Photography) in 2005, Desh soon realized that this was merely his first step into a world of many successes, many more uncertainties, painful growths and profound realizations. ‍ With a desire to inspire, Desh is on a mission to educate, entertain and enhance the lives of those he connects with. At no point has his career been a simple, single entity – it has always been multifaceted and ever-evolving. From rubbing shoulders with celebrity innovators, to a gradual transition from entertainment to education, before finally bringing the two together, Desh’s career and life story track the journey from consumer, to communicator, to creator. Most recently in 2018, Desh has launched This Is 42. The riveting and illuminating documentary, Islam and the Future of Tolerance follows prominent atheist philosopher Sam Harris and Islamist-turned-liberal-Muslim Maajid Nawaz, after publicly clashing in a debate over the concept of Islamic reform in the Muslim world. The two men reconnect several years later in an attempt at civil and honest dialogue. Sam and Maajid attempt to explore their real or imagined divides by clearly and rationally dissecting their disagreements. Through the course of their discussions, they tackle troubling passages from the Quran, the importance of the precision of language and terms (such as “Jihadism,” “Islamists,” and “radical,”) and the difficulty in finding helpful and honest responses in a fraught political terrain. Ultimately, this unlikely collaboration sheds light on the many confusions that afflict the public conversation about Islam and emphasizes how the virtues of open dialogue can help foster both understanding and tolerance in an increasingly polarized world. Sam Harris entered life as a public intellectual after 9/11 and soon found himself regardedas a leading voice of the “New Atheist” movement, along with Christopher Hitchens, Richard Dawkins, and Daniel Dennett. He spent much of the next decade writing books such as The End of Faith, Letter to a Christian Nation, and The Moral Landscape and publicly engaging religious scholars and apologists in highly contentious conversations. Maajid Nawaz was arrested and thrown into an Egyptian prison, where he spent four years  before beginning his slow journey out of radical Islamism. By the time he emerged, he had decided to dedicate his life’s work to reforming Islam from within. He started Quilliam, a counter-extremism organization. Islam and the Future of Tolerance tells the story of an unlikely conversation on a topic of grave importance, and how it changed two foes into friends. Director Jay Shapiro joins us to talk about his engaging and enlightening documentary.
