Episode #354: Saravanan, an advocate for Myanmar's alienated Tamil community, illuminates their rich, yet overlooked, history. He describes an ancient connection, starting around 300 BC, through trade between Tamil merchants and the Mon people. Those early Tamil migrants eventually assimilated completely, suggesting hidden Tamil ancestry in many Burmese today. The colonial era marked a huge turning point. From just 19 Indians living in Yangon in 1852, the rice boom led to a surge of cheap Indian labor, which totaled 1 million by 1931. This forced migration through indentured labor, akin to slavery, fueled Myanmar's economy but also bred resentment. Saravanan details how discriminatory terms like kalar became linked to darker skin, creating persistent color-based classism. Anti-Indian sentiment escalated, culminating in the violent Rangoon riots in the 1930s. Then post-1962, Ne Win's regime deported many Tamils and nationalized their assets, while also banning their language and culture outright. For those who remained, this caused deep self-suppression and alienation. While modern media offers cultural revitalization, political participation remains severely limited due to lack of citizenship and fear of retaliation. Saravanan emphasizes that for Tamils, neither dictatorship nor democracy has brought genuine inclusion. He advocates for an “alienated minority committee” to actively integrate these communities, recognizing their history and providing legal and social equality. “Society has to take a step back, look at us and say, ‘Okay, these people belong to us. They have to walk with us, because they are part of us,'” he says in closing.

After a long hiatus we're finally bringing you season three. We're kicking off the season talking to Seran, a member of Solidarity for Eelam Tamils, a group focussed on education and awareness around the struggle of Eelam Tamils in so-called-Sri-LankaAnd just a warning that this episode contains non-descriptive references to sexual violence including towards childrenTamil Eelam is one of the most heavily occupied regions on earth. Eelam Tamils live under continued colonisation, ethnic cleansing and genocide by the Sri Lankan state. In some areas, there are still 2 occupying Sri Lankan soldiers for every 1 civilian. New colonies are set-up and constantly supported by the state.During the month of may, Eelam Tamils commemorate the lives lost in one of the Earth's largest massacres of the 21st century. Official statements by the International Truth and Justice Project point to around 170,000 lives lost in just the Mullivaikkal massacre during May 2009, and Eelam Tamil accounts point to a number higher than 200,000. It should be noted, that this is just one massacre, in a history deeply marked by Sinhala-supremacist anti-Tamil pogroms and government-approved massacres stretching back to the 1940s and 1950s. There has been no accountability or justice, and Sri Lanka has criminalised discussions of genocide, and banned memorialisation of those killed. This year, there was increasing legal and military repression of Eelam Tamil voices crying out for acknowledgement of genocide.Eelam Tamils are still subject to mass SA, mass disappearance (one of the highest rates of enforced disappearance on earth), displacement, torture, and even mass sterilisation in the Vanni region of Tamil Eelam. Other countries of Sri Lanka's imperialist family have continued to deny the rights of the thousands of Tamil refugees who have fled, and continue to flee oppression and torture in Eelam. We discuss the historical Eelam Tamil resistance movement against this genocide, what we refer to as "iyakkam". We also discuss the forms resistance takes today, and how recognition of genocide may be important to our hopes of future liberation. You can follow the work of Solidarity for Eelam Tamils on Instagram, and keep an eye out for upcoming events. This episode was made on Wurundjeri land and Boon Wurrung land. These lands were invaded, stolen and remain under occupation. J.R. Jayewardene served as prime minister and then president of Sri Lanka between 1977 and 1989. Sri Lankan history, politics and society is dominated by tensions between two ethnic groups. Ethnic divisions are intrinsic to countless countries, including many covered on this podcast before. The key question the Sri Lankan experience raises though is this: in stoking ethnic tensions, what is more important: how the government works, or who runs it?Today's subject demonstrates that in the case of Sri Lanka, the latter is true. During his presidency, J.R. presided over the so called Black July riots, which saw the deaths of 5000 Tamils in a single month. But even when he saw the results of leaning into ethnic division - and there was evidence of the results of doing so long before Black July- he wasn't compelled to stop. For this reason, J.R might hold greater responsibility for Sri Lanka's ethnic strife and ensuing civil war than any other Sri Lankan. My guest today is Dr. Asanga Welikala. Primarily focusing on constitutional theory and commonwealth constitutional history, Asanga is a lecturer in public law at the University of Edinburgh School of Law. He is also a Research Associate of the Institute of Commonwealth Studies, University of London.

Screen Southasia is a partnership between Himal Southasian and Film Southasia. In this Screen Southasia Q&A session, recorded on 5 February 2024, we speak with the filmmaker Jude Ratnam on his film 'Demons in Paradise' Synopsis Sri Lanka 1983 – Jude Ratnam is five years old. On a red train, he flees the massacre of Tamils instigated by the Pro-Sinhalese majoritarian government. Now a filmmaker, he takes the same train from South to North. As he advances, the traces of the violence of the 26-year-old war, which turned the Tamil fight for freedom into self-destructive terrorism pass before his eyes. He unveils the repressed memories of his compatriots, opening the door to a new era and making peace possible again. Demons in Paradise is the result of ten years of work. For the first time, a Tamil documentary filmmaker living in Sri Lanka is seeing the Civil war from the inside.

Sixty years ago, MLK declared “I have a dream”. As Australia votes on the Voice, we grapple with racism.  --- It's been 60 years since Reverend Dr Martin Luther King Jr. ascended the steps of the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C., declaring that “one day right there in Alabama, little black boys and black girls will be able to join hands with little white boys and white girls as sisters and brothers – I have a dream today.”  More than half a century on from King's dream, where are we in Australia on the vexed question of race relations?   In this episode of Life & Faith, we speak to fellow CPXer Max Jeganathan, who's recently written about the Voice and his own experience of racism in Australia – according to him, the “least racist” country he's ever lived in.   Max was born into a Sri Lankan Tamil family with close personal experience of the Black July riots of 1983, a government-sanctioned program of racial discrimination against minority Tamils. His family wound up in Australia as humanitarian refugees.   While Max is very positive about growing up in Australia, he's still experienced racism. Which provides a glimpse, perhaps, of the racial discrimination experienced by Aboriginal Australians on an ongoing basis.  --  Explore  Max's article on how the Voice is a question of love and moral imagination  Max's article on racism in light of the 60th anniversary of Martin Luther King's speech  The Martin Luther King Jr. segment from For the love of God: How the church is better and worse than you ever imagined.

At the time Para did not know that the causes went back to 1830 when the Tamil people were imported to Sri Lanka to work on the plantations in conditions that were not far off slavery. Para had spent his childhood in poverty by Australian standards but when the war began conditions got even harder. Survival required courage, ingenuity and in Para’s case the kindness of strangers.
