Parts of Metro Detroit got as much rain in five hours as they'd normally get in two months, overwhelming our aging sewer and drainage system. I-94, as of this recording, is still flooded. The Fisher Building sits dark without power due to a substation being out. Thousands of basements were filled with water, and countless personal items lost across Detroit, Dearborn, the Grosse Pointes, and elsewhere. There's a lot to this story, and with such a catastrophic failure, there's no one answer. But a big part of this is climate change. Our infrastructure, in some cases built as much as a century ago, wasn't designed for this new climate we find ourselves in today.  So not only do we need to update our aging infrastructure, to help stop this happening again we need to think better. And do that, we need to understand climate change and how it plays into everything and why organizations like the Detroit Water and Sewerage Department as well as residents need to be aware of it and prepare for it. To give us a bigger lens, Sheril Kirshenbaum. She's a scientist who through her work at Michigan State University, PBS, and other places helps increase the understanding of science and improve communication between scientists, policymakers and the public. She's also the co-author of Unscientific America: How Scientific Illiteracy Threatens our Future. We're gonna talk about not just the flooding, but how it all works together. Our food. Our health and safety. Economy. And that not all hope is lost, but action is needed. Listeners have been asking for ways to help. It was April 2014 when the city moved from using water from the Detroit Water and Sewerage Department to water from the Flint River. After this change, lead leached from pipes into the water. That change resulted in 12,000 children being exposed to dangerous levels of lead, and at least 12 people dying. While years have passed and tests show the water quality in most areas is now acceptable to drink, many people are scared to drink it. The city has inspected more than 25,000 service lines and has replaced 85 percent of the pipes. However, the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic has put work on hold. Meanwhile, work continues to hold people accountable for the water crisis. Imagine water rushing through the pipes recently turned on to get to your faucet and into a glass filled with ice on a sun scorched day, only thing, the water isn't safe to drink but you don't know that yet.

A bonus pod this Friday, January 25, 2018. Despite its new owner’s promises to build a brewery, office space, a hotel and more, Detroit’s infamous Packard Plant is once again subject to foreclosure by Wayne County in 2019, according to notices published in the Detroit Legal News last month. That’s due, at least in part, to unpaid bills to the Detroit Water and Sewerage Department. But the amount shows up as tax liability. Although we haven’t been able to confirm the total owed for the water and sewage bills, adding up records found on Loveland’s property website shows that Arte Express owes $302,434 as of August 2018. That’s across a variety of properties that make up the north and south sides of the sprawling Packard facility. The Detroit Water And Sewerage Department said they wouldn’t be able to confirm the total amount owed across the numerous properties that make up the plant by the end of today. We’ve identified 42 parcels owned by Arte Express at the Packard Plant, with 41 subject to foreclosure on March 31, 2019. This includes the administration building that the pedestrian bridge fell from earlier this week at 1580 East Grand Boulevard. That parcel is listed as owing $5,587.99. Peruvian developer Fernando Palazuelo and his Arte Express company purchased the complex out of foreclosure in 2013 for $405,000. Lawyer 2 Lawyer - Law News and Legal Topics

There is presently a public health crisis plaguing Flint, Michigan. Lead contamination in the water has led to a major public health danger. Back in 2014, Flint changed its water source from the treated Detroit Water and Sewerage Department water to the Flint River. Since then, Flint’s drinking water has had a host of problems. This Flint River water then caused lead from aging pipes to seep into the water supply, causing extremely high levels of lead. Between 6,000 and 12,000 children have been exposed and they may experience a range of serious health problems. On January 21, 2016, the E.P.A. issued an emergency administrative order finding that “the city of Flint’s and the state of Michigan’s responses to the drinking water crisis in Flint have been inadequate to protect public health and that these failures continue.” On Lawyer2Lawyer, hosts J. Craig Williams and Bob Ambrogi join professor Peter Jacobson, professor of health management and policy at the School of Public Health at the University of Michigan and professor Peter J. Henning from Wayne State University, as they take a look at the Flint water crisis, the violation of public health laws, liability, the impact on the Flint community and their health, litigation and long-term effect.   Special thanks to our sponsor, Clio.

They discuss the city's effort to privatize water for their corporate friends. Michigan, with its dictatorial emergency managers that replace democratically elected officials, is ground zero for the fight against the corporate fascist assault on our lives. What is happening in Michigan can come to your town too!
