Propaganda has always been an issue in our societies, but the problem is becoming a much bigger challenge today. Recently, a British man was charged over an arson plot targeting a Ukrainian business after he was allegedly recruited to act for the mercenary group, Wagner. He will face trial under the UK's new National Security Act, the first time a case will be brought under this new legislation, designed to crack down on foreign agents. But this isn't the only incident. A more serious Russian campaign of sabotage is spanning the whole of Europe, with signal interference in the air and at sea. The challenge is this hostile action from Russia is becoming gradually normalized, because it appears that nobody is willing or able to deal with it. Of course, this isn't just happening in Europe, with China on a propaganda offensive around the world, as well as Americans being targeted by foreign propagandists using the internet and social media to fill minds with untruths. Unfortunately, they are lapping it up.  It appears a bored, listless and fearful society is definitely a successful feeding ground for disinformation, and we will all suffer its impact if we don't get a handle on the situation. To help us dig into this fascinating topic, we are very happy to welcome Taryn-Lee Kearney, the Chief Executive Director of Aha Training and Development. Loree Jones, Chief Executive Director of Philabundance discussed hunger in the Delaware Valley.  The area's largest food pantry supplier, they are seeing hunger rising, today 17% of our children and one in ten people are food insecure.   Philabundance collects food, through donations, restaurants and groceries, produce suppliers and others to distribute to over 600 area pantries.  Their operating mission is to provide nutritious food to all, culturally responsive to the communities, equitably sourced from businesses that are diverse and that reflect their values, and accessible through local organizations within the community.  Loree points out that it's all for nothing if its food that people don't want or they can't get to.    She discussed the hunger calendar, lots of food comes in during the holidays, but hunger is year-round and many children are going without meals when school is not in session.  She talked about their latest initiative, ‘Let's Eat' that delivered meal boxes to their homes.     Recognizing that hunger is a vicious circle, Philabundance not only works to alleviate hunger today, but also toward ‘Ending Hunger. For Good' with partnerships that can offer services to help break the cycle of poverty and end hunger for good.  Financial literacy, health services, Housing and job training programming helps families become self-sufficient.  Philabundance itself has a kitchen program that teaches knife skills and job skills, its graduates leave with their Safe Serve certification and a 80+% job placement.  Students operate a Philabundance catering facility, it's available for both hosting onsite and to cater outside events.   While hiring catering is an easy way to get involved, she hopes we will also donate and volunteer.  Individuals and businesses can host food drives or raise cash through ‘virtual' food drives.  She points out that with their buying power a cash donation goes much further.  Volunteers are also needed to sort, box food and transport collected food.   We talked about the annual Camp Out for Hunger, the nation's largest single location food drive, November 7th through the 11th at Xfinity Live at the Sports Complex.  Free parking and events every day are offered, including a carnival mid-way, live entertainment, a Wednesday night food truck and fireworks party, celebrity guests and stunts hosted by Beasley Media Group WMMR.   The event kicks off Sunday, November 6th with a ‘Fill a Trunk' car show, local car clubs and collectors will bring donations to the site for a rally.  Businesses and individual are encouraged to donate through Camp Out, onsite or online.  For more information about Philabundance go to philabundance.org

How much do consumers want to know about the environmental impact of the food products they buy? There's no doubt that environmental issues are increasingly on the minds of shoppers, but it can be difficult to know if what you're buying is "good" or "bad" for the planet. With that in mind, Foundation Earth is trying to establish a simple front-of-pack grading system that offers answers at a glance, whilst also providing the opportunity for further reading through a QR code. The United Nations estimates that the food system accounts for more than one-third of global greenhouse gas emission, a sobering thought. But the environmental impact of a food product goes well beyond just how much carbon is pumped into the atmosphere. Foundation Earth says we need to be looking much more broadly at things like land use, water pollution, and biodiversity. And it's no use just looking at how production impacts the environment without considering transport, how the product is cooked, and how waste packaging is disposed of. In short, it is very difficult to calculate the environmental impact of a food product. But, it is not impossible. Listen to this episode of the Food Matters Live Podcast to hear how Foundation Earth is working with industry to try to get data that is as accurate as possible, is trying to find the right balance between providing too much information and not enough, and why the vegan option might not always be the best option for the planet. Cliona Howie, Chief Executive Director, Foundation Earth Cliona has broad background in the environmental sector and has worked as an environmental specialist for over 23 years.  She has chaired the European Commission's Enterprise Europe Network Environment Sector Group, driving the uptake of resource efficiency and circular economy solutions for SMEs across Europe, and has collaborated as an expert with the European Commission on advancing the circular economy, climate policy and innovation agenda.  She has worked across Europe with national and regional public authorities to design, develop and deliver large scale, multi-sectorial plans for decarbonisation and transition to a low-carbon, circular economy for industrial value chains.

Migrants, Thinkers, Storytellers develops an argument about how individual migrants, coming from four continents and diverse socioeconomic backgrounds, are in many ways affected by a violent categorisation that is often nihilistic, insistently racial, and continuously significant in the organisation of South African society. The book also examines how relative privilege and storytelling function as instruments for migrants to negotiate meanings and shape their lives. It employs narrative lifestory research as its guiding methodology and applies various disciplinary analytical perspectives, with an overall focus on social categorisation and its consequences. The featured stories stress how unsettled, mutable and in flux social categories and identities are – just as a messy pencil sketch challenges clear definitions. MODERATOR: Leslie Bank, Deputy Executive Director of the Economic Development and Performance Unit at the HSRC. Adjunct Professor at Walter Sisulu University and University of Fort Hare. Author of Migrant Labour after Apartheid: The inside story (edited with Dorrit Posel and Francis Wilson, 2020), Covid and Custom in Rural South Africa: Culture, healthcare and the state (with Nelly Sharpley, 2021), Home Spaces, Street Styles: Contesting power and identity in a South African city (2011) and other books. As part 2 of Collecting Courage, we invited several white leaders in the sector to talk about how to be real and active allies for anti-racism work. On the podcast today are Mazarine Treyz, Fundraising Author and Coach, Chris Conroy, Partner at the Wellspring Group, and Scott Russell, Chief Executive Director at the Alzheimer Society of Toronto. Mazarine, Chris and Scott’ tips on being active allies: Commit to lifelong learning and listening. Allyship and anti-racism work is not a quick fix - it’s a lifelong commitment. Look for resources to help yourself learn and talk to people around you. Stepping Back and Calling Out. When you’re invited to a panel or speaking engagement that includes only white people, do the work to ask questions, call out the organizers, and step back. Acts like participating in all-white panels is perpetuating the system at work that disproportionately supports white voices over other’s. Get comfortable with confronting your own complicity. We are all complicit one way or another in participating in a system that is racist. Get comfortable with the uncomfortable feeling of coming face to face your own complicity. Favourite Quotes from Today’s EpisodePost your favourite quote on social to share with us!“Highlight people of colour and their work. Pay them if you’re inviting them to speak. Ask the questions that people don't want to ask. Like, why is the sector not a safe or good space for a lot of people of colour?” -  Mazarine“We have to be willing to go deeper and to look at things with critical eyes and questions. We have to be honest with ourselves that we don't see our bias and complicity very well and see it very clearly.” - Scott“Getting comfortable with getting uncomfortable is about getting comfortable with letting go of your own empowered worldview, which has come at the expense at the oppression of people with different world views and differing identities, which whiteness has itself framed and named and defined for itself.” - ChrisResources from this Episode The Good PartnershipCharityVillageConnect with MazarineConnect with ScottConnect with ChrisFeral Visions PodcastThe Mother of All Questions

Stand Out Quotes from This Episode Everyone has a human right to basic needs.  Everyone has a right to have their family and be safe.Basic tenants of the children’s human rights convention are that every child has a right to not be separated from their parents. We see moms and dads and grandparents coming to save their lives. This was not their plan or desire to come to the United States but was forced to save their lives. Belinda Hernandez Arriaga is a Faculty Coordinator for the Masters In Counseling MFT program at USF's South Bay location. Belinda has a doctorate in Education and is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker with eighteen years of experience working in community mental health, with a specialization in child trauma and Latino Mental Health. She is Founder and Chief Executive Director of Ayudando Latinos A Soñar (www.alashmb.org), a Latino cultural arts, education, and social justice program dedicated to working with rural youth and families.Dr. Belinda Arriaga has one of the most non-judgemental loving hearts you will ever hear.  She doesn’t talk politics. She empathizes with the inner political questions people have about the border crisis.  But her focus is making sure moms, dads and kids are ok. This interview was recorded in 2018. Today, as it is airing on the Sidewalk Talk Podcast page, Dr. Arriaga is at the border again.  She reports the conditions are worse. She shares story after story and challenges us all to widen our embrace. You don’t have to agree with what she is doing but I think this is a philosophical question worth asking.  We have “agendas” and then we have our “humanity”. Belinda is a Christian woman and she brings her faith into the work she does.  And at the end of the day, love and care for all of humanity is her heart call.Listen as Belinda tells stories of grandmas, moms, dads, and kids trying to stay alive.  You do not hear that she is a Dr. You hear she is a mother of three daughters connecting deeply with other mothers and fathers and kids.  She connects through love and equality. She gets up every day and lives this question “How can I make the world better?”Belinda is at the border again with the University of San Francisco volunteer Bay Area Border Relief.  If you want to support them right now you can send donations to VENMO @Lilli-Rey and add this text to each donation #BayAreaBorderRelief from #sidewalktalk or visit Dr. Arriagga’s website for ALAS here.Or follow Bay Area Border Relief here for other ways to get involved.

In this episode, I spend time basking in the sun of Dr. Todd Wolynn, pediatrician and CEO at Kids Plus Pediatrics in Pittsburgh, PA.   I can talk to Dr. Wolynn for hours, but we tried hard to focus - and largely succeeded - on how to even get started on the idea of making significant change in your practice.  KPP, you see, is arguably the most progressive, evolutionary, and with-it pediatric practice in the country.  You can see the details below.  But when I talk to or about Dr. Wolynn, I see some people tune it out because they think, "I can never do that!"  Dr. Wolynn will explain that you HAVE to do whatever "that" is - and the sooner, the better. Some background about KPP and Dr. Wolynn: Kids Plus Pediatrics is a fiercely independent, nationally-renowned pediatric practice.  They are advocates, educators, supporters and entertainers of kids and their families in the region. They won the Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year Award in 2016 for the W.PA/WV region. Kids Plus is proud to have earned the Pittsburgh Post Gazette Top Workplace Award six of the past seven years -based on anonymous employee voting. They’ve presented at the CDC, at the American Cancer Society Headquarters, and at International Vaccine Confidence Conferences in Austria and France - all within 2018. US Development Aid: What Does the Future Hold?

In November, the international community watched as Americans elected Donald Trump the next President, leaving many with unanswered questions about what lies ahead for international development. The United States government is currently the biggest foreign aid donor in the world. Washington’s actions also influence how much other governments contribute to global efforts to eliminate poverty, reduce hunger, empower women and local actors, and increase access to education and healthcare. Trump said little about his stance on international aid throughout his campaign. Republicans have supported foreign aid in the past because it contributes to national security at home, which is also one of Trump’s biggest priorities. However, if his nationalist ideologies and “Make America First” rhetoric are any indicators of future actions, foreign aid — despite representing less than 1% of the national budget — may be on the chopping block. What progress has been made, and what hope is there for the world’s most vulnerable people? Dana Hyde, the CEO of the Millennium Challenge Corporation, and Richard Leach, the President and CEO of World Food Program USA, will share insights about major achievements in recent years and shifting priorities for the future. Dana Hyde, Chief Executive Director of the Millennium Challenge Corporation, and Richard Leach, President and CEO of the World Food Program USA, are in conversation. The discussion is moderated by Jane Wales, CEO, World Affairs and Global Philanthropy Forum; Vice President, The Aspen Institute.
