    Ivy Insights

The Authentically Detroit podcast is an absolute gem that I stumbled upon thanks to a friend's recommendation, and I have been hooked ever since. This podcast embodies everything I look for in a show - it is relevant, impactful, informative, inspiring, and reverent. The justice orientation of the discussions tackled on this podcast should be heeded by all city leaders and community development organizers. It is refreshing to see the hosts push their guests to critically engage with the questions and philosophies at hand. If there is one thing I would change about this podcast, it would be to edit each episode down to 30-45 minutes and update episodes three times per week.

One of the best aspects of The Authentically Detroit podcast is the engaging hosts, Orlando and Donna. They have a great dynamic that keeps me listening episode after episode. Their conversations delve deep into current issues impacting Detroit and the Eastside, providing valuable insights and perspectives that are not always heard in mainstream media. I appreciate their honest dialogue on politics, policy, and people. It feels like they truly care about their community and are committed to making a difference through their platform.

On the flip side, one potential drawback of this podcast is its length. Currently running at around an hour or more per episode, some listeners may find it challenging to dedicate such a significant amount of time to each installment. By condensing each episode down to 30-45 minutes, the content could become more easily digestible for those with limited time. However, despite its longer format, The Authentically Detroit podcast manages to hold my attention throughout due to its thought-provoking discussions.

In conclusion, The Authentically Detroit podcast is an incredible show that deserves recognition for its efforts in promoting grassroots leadership and equity-focused community development. It has quickly become one of my favorite podcasts thanks to its relevance and inspiring content. I am grateful for the recommendations that led me here as this podcast has had a significant impact on my understanding of Detroit and the Eastside. I highly recommend this show to anyone interested in justice-oriented discussions and those seeking to be informed about local issues.

This week, Donna and Orlando sat down with Cartographer and founder of Detroitography, Alex B. Hill to discuss how data-driven neighborhood classification aids in the discrimination of Detroiters. Detroitography is a project started by Alex to bring together Detroit cartographers and their work. In 2021, he wrote that although over the past decade, redlining has received increased attention in popular press and across academic disciplines, there's a larger story of spatial racism before and after redlining. Alex argues that spatial racism is not limited to a single set of maps, but is embedded within institutions. Now, he wants the long history of spatial racism teased out and examined as new data-driven practices have resulted in “orange lining” that generates inequitable opportunities for Detroiters. To read Alex's full write up of how spacial racism is impacting Detroit, click here. FOR HOT TAKES:DETROIT CHAMPION, FATHER, HUSBAND, DIES AFTER CORONAVIRUS DIAGNOSIS DETROIT 67 EXHIBIT BECOMES PERMANENT, DEDICATED TO MARLOWE STOUDAMIRESupport the showFollow us on Instagram, Facebook and Twitter.
