This week, Shirley enters into a burgeoning relationship with a handsome pediatrician named Mark McKenzie. All seems to be going well, but there's a cloud on the horizon: he's recently estranged from his wife and is splitting custody of his young son, Bobby, with her. When Laverne discovers by chance that Diana McKenzie is Shirley's spitting image, it becomes clear that Mark may be displacing his frustrated affections on Shirley because of the resemblance. Shirley is placed on a collision course with her "twin." Will she hold onto what she's got? Meanwhile, Laverne, Lenny, and Squiggy bond with Bobby and Laverne tries to launch her folk singing career at Cowboy Bills. On pod, we talk the technical craftsmanship on display, the lively characterizations, and Cindy Williams' dual role performance!
On the seventh episode and season one finale of Enterprise Software Innovators, hosts Evan Reiser (Abnormal Security) and Saam Motamedi (Greylock Partners) talk with Diana McKenzie, former CIO at Workday. Diana has been SVP and CIO of Workday in addition to CIO at Amgen. Today, she sits on the board of Vertex Pharmaceuticals, MetLife, Change Healthcare, and Paradox, among others. Evan and Saam speak with Diana about the importance of being a customer facing CIO, the technology-driven innovations she's most excited about in the life sciences, and her experience being a board member after spending years on the other side of the table.Quick hits from Diana:On CIOs directionally oriented towards deploying new technology: “When we found a group of CIOs who were willing to embrace some of these newer concepts, you tend to cluster together and develop relationships. And then somebody in the group comes to the dinner and says, ‘oh my gosh, we're trying this, We're trying Snowflake, or we're trying that.' And then everybody wants to jump on board because it's a cool thing to be engaged with, but never just for the technology, always because you're trying to derive an outcome that's better for the business.”On being customer focused as a CIO: “The entire time I was a CIO, I never ever called the people that I worked with inside the company my customers. My belief has always been that the person that we are selling our product or service to is the customer and that's the one we have to all be looking at in the same way. Inside the company, we all have to be working together to make sure we're achieving that end. And by keeping myself and my team focused on the end customer, I think we're better at sort of deciphering what we needed to do internally.”On technological breakthroughs in the life sciences space: “We are working in partnership with the CRISPR company to develop a product called CTX001 and right now it's showing enormous promise in clinical trials for patients suffering from sickle cell anemia. It is all about editing their DNA so that it will produce this fetal hemoglobin that ultimately becomes a mature adult hemoglobin in the amounts that are needed so that these patients no longer have sickle cell anemia. So we're talking about a cure [and] you simply don't get to that without the application of technology.” Recent book recommendation: Not a Good Day to Die: The Untold Story of Operation Anaconda by Sean Naylor--Like what you hear? Judges Share View from the Center of the Ring[caption id="attachment_7733" align="alignleft" width="240"] The Prairie Christmas Dog Show judging panel on "pajama day"...[/caption] These judges share their 411 stories and their views from the center of the ring. This is part one of two from our panel discussion at the Prairie Christmas Dog Show in Regina, Saskatchewan. Our panelists share common paths to involvement with purebred dogs. Frances Smith talks about family connections and, bonus, the story of transporting Yorkshire Terriers from England to Argentina by ship. Obedience competition that started with a mixed breed dog brought obedience judge Diana McKenzie to purebred dogs. Sue-Ellen Rempel talks about coming to dogs from horses. You only get one chance to make a first impression and these panelists agree it really is a critical piece to judging. “I want to see type, quality, balance, and to know a dog is a dog, a bitch is a bitch,” Smith said. Rempel agreed, noting outline, angles and breed type are her first look.McKenzie added that she wants to see that each handler-dog team to be a really a *team.* Making the picture becomes a critical piece of success, as each judge has a picture in their mind of a “perfect” one of each breed. Essentials of type“Many people don’t exactly know what type is,” Smith observed. “Type is the essence of a breed. It’s what makes each breed unique and different from another.” Smith’s clear and concise definition of the six factors of type is magical. The six elements that define each breed: head, color, size/measurement, temperament, coat, movement.“Movement is breed specific. Temperament is type,” Smith said. Applying breed type to obedience performances, McKenzie offered a fascinating perspective. “With different breeds in obedience competition, you still have breed type,” McKenzie said. “Different dogs sit differently and at different speeds, for example. How straight they are affects score. Just because you’re fast doesn’t mean you’re going to be good. Sometimes slower workers are more precise workers.” Support this podcast
