Part 2: "The Demons Have Taken Over"In last week's episode, we discussed the 2005 vigilante killings in Bellingham, Washington. A man, haunted by the traumas of his own childhood, was on a mission to hunt pedophiles because he thought he was protecting the public, and more specifically, vulnerable children. He claimed he was inspired to do so by another 2005 case from Idaho, the murders of Mark McKenzie, Brenda Groene, and Slade Groene, and the kidnapping of the two youngest Groene children; Dylan and Shasta. Driven by a desperate desire to confront the man responsible for these heinous crimes, he sought to dispose of as many level 3 sex offenders as he could. In this week's episode we'll continue to discuss the Idaho case and what happened after the Groene children were taken and the history of the man responsible; Joseph Edward Duncan III.Episode Host: Emily RowneyFor photos and sources for today's episode, check out the Murder in the Rain Episode Blog. The 51st episode of our podcast, Rethink, is now available. The skilled nursing industry won't likely see material, system-wide change until the sector's stakeholders including CMS, operators, payors, as well as residents and their respective advocacy groups, can get on the same page. That's according to Focused Post Acute Care Partners CEO Mark McKenzie. The industry is ever evolving, he said, and while subtle improvements and strides will likely occur — like the move to private rooms — big changes will take big conversations. McKenzie has tried to make his voice, and the voices of his Texas-based team, heard at both the state and federal levels — especially as the state legislature will convene next year and discuss, among other things, potentially increasing nursing home Medicaid rates. He remains hopeful and believes state officials are more aware and have a much deeper knowledge of the challenges the nursing home industry faces than they did before. Operators in the state receive 154.98 per patient day even though the methodology says they should be making about $275 per patient day. I spoke with McKenzie on what adequate reimbursement looks like in the Lone Star state, the place in skilled nursing for heavily rural operators like Focused Post Acute Care partners, the need to staff up for higher acuity residents and more. In this episode of Rethink, learn: • The importance McKenzie places, and thinks others should also, on heavily rural operators in the skilled nursing sector • Whether CMS's changes to the special focus facility (SFF) program will make operators like Focused Post Acute Care Partners think twice about taking on such buildings in the future • The wins and ongoing challenges McKenzie's executive team faces with staffing

Mark & Heath welcome one of the rising Americans abroad, Joe Scally. Joe brings all the positivity in this one from his home in Düsseldorf, Germany. The guys get into the recent USMNT camp and Joe's inclusion in the senior team over the past calendar year, consistent playing time at Borussia Mönchengladbach, drawing Bayern Munich earlier this season and life abroad. He is just an all around positive dude and it will be impossible not to root for continued success for our guy after you listen to this episode. It's been too long OS fam but Heath Pearce and Mark McKenzie are finally back and on the road to Qatar. Mark joins us from USMNT camp and the guys get into a lot in this episode. They address our long break from the pod, the end of last season for Mark at Genk, why he wasn't playing and his recent run of form for his club. Of course they also get into everything USMNT including Mark's addition to this September camp and his goals for the next couple of months before the World Cup. The guys will be doing their thing every week until Qatar so subscribe to the feed so you don't miss an episode. Jason and Jared catch up after Gregg Berhalter announced his 26 man roster for the September camp... and then updated it even further due to injuries. The biggest surprise was at striker with Ricardo Pepi getting the call and Jordan Pefok being left at the top of the table in Germany. The guys debate why Gregg made this decision and if there is still a path for Pefok to go to Qatar. Plus, with Cameron Carter-Vickers and Chris Richards dropping out of camp with injuries - Mark McKenzie and Erik Palmer-Brown get the call up. The guys debate why they got the call over an in-form Tim Ream. Finally, Jared introduces a new game to the crew "Cap or Crap" to close out the show. Thanks to everyone who called in! Jason and Jared are back on a Sunday night to discuss the upcoming September International break. The guys predict their 26 man rosters for the break (not the World Cup!!) and which of the fringe players deserve a look this window. Sure, the Pulisic's and Aaronson's have secured their ticket to the World Cup but this is really the last chance for the likes of Haji Wright, Cameron Carter Vickers, James Sands, Mark McKenzie and Brandon Vazquez, etc to make their case for the Qatar squad. Who do you have filling out the last 15% of the roster? It's the business end of the season so no guest but plenty to discuss as Mark and Genk are pushing for the final Conference League spot in the Belgian Playoffs. The guys talk about Mark's recent run of form, the complicated playoff system in Belgium and other Americans dealing with the end of the season in various leagues in Europe. They get into an interesting conversation about the recent run of Americans moving for record fees and the expectations that come with that - is it always best to move to the biggest club available? Finally, the guys get into summer plans ahead fo a weird winter World Cup and setting up expectations for next season (yes, already). Many fans know Kellyn Acosta as the ultimate ish talker in the USMNT but he's actually a really level headed, thoughtful guy off the pitch. Kellyn stopped by the show to catch up with the boys about everything from his recent move to LA, recapping the intensity of the schedule this past year, facing off against Mexico here and abroad, trades within MLS and much more. He also shares some insight into how he is able to stay present during an unrelenting schedule and how he rewards himself for accomplishments in real time. Such an awesome conversation with one of the more thoughtful leaders we have had on the pod. It's been a few weeks but the boys are back with a great conversation about taking the unconventional path to success. In a world where players are pros at 16 or on the academy trail even younger, Christian Ramirez had to build his own path to professional football. He had no offers coming out of college from MLS or abroad and bet on himself in the lower leagues in the States. It eventually paid off and he made a name for himself at Minnesota United and has since enjoyed success at the national team level and now abroad with Aberdeen FC in Scotland. Christian is a humble guy who has a great chat with the boys about his career, staying ready for the national team, life abroad and making the move at what many would consider a late stage in his career. Heath and Mark catch up to celebrate the USMNT qualifying for the 2022 World Cup! It's been a 6+ month process... ok 4 year process and our guy Mark played a big role in revitalizing this squad. The guys discuss losing at Costa Rica last night and the mixed reaction post match, taking care of business this window, where they were four years ago when we lost to Trinidad & Tobago, their highs and lows from this qualification process and goals for the rest of this year.
