This audio is brought to you by Endress and Hauser, a leading supplier of products, solutions and services for industrial process measurement and automation. Cape Town's proposed second big commercial airport, the Cape Winelands Airport (CWA), should receive its first passengers in 2027, says RSA.Aero MD Nick Ferguson. RSA.Aero is the project developer, with the first phase expected to cost between R5-billion and R7-billion. Phase 1 will include a 3.5 km runway, taxiways, the terminal building and road infrastructure. The airport will be located in Durbanville, on the northern outskirts of Cape Town. CWA's customers are expected to come from Cape Town, as well as the nearby Stellenbosch, Paarl, Wellington and the West Coast. CWA will be partially built on the site of the current 155 ha Fisantekraal Airport, a private airport handling mainly general aviation. This facility was built in 1943 by the Allied Forces to protect the South African coastline during World War Two. The new development will see the site expand to 450 ha in Phase 1, in a northerly direction, and, ultimately, potentially, to the full 884 ha owned by RSA.Aero. "We'll expand incrementally and in line with demand," Ferguson tells Engineering News Online. "But the aim is to add hotels, cargo facilities, aeroplane maintenance sites, a conference centre and much more." "People always ask if CWA will be like the privately owned Lanseria, in Johannesburg," he adds. "The answer is yes, but it will be bigger, with a longer runway that can accommodate wide-body aeroplanes - which means it will be able to handle more international traffic, from more destinations, compared with Lanseria." RSA.Aero has already started the environmental impact assessment on the project. Ferguson aims to have this finished by early next year, with construction to start once the project has been given the green light. Construction will take approximately two years, with the first scheduled traffic set to land in 2027. Ferguson is upbeat about the airport's potential, as Cape Town International Airport (CTIA) cannot currently accommodate A380s - the world largest commercial passenger aircraft and the largest contingent in the Emirates fleet, for example. Also: "Johannesburg is mainly a transit hub for most tourists. They land there and immediately fly on to other destinations. If Cape Town is their final destination, then why not fly there directly?" CTIA is owned and operated by State-owned Airports Company South Africa (ACSA). Does this not place the privately owned CWA in direct competition with CTIA? Yes, admits Ferguson, but all major world-class cities have more than one airport. "Look at London, New York and Sydney - even our neighbour Windhoek has two airports." While the current Fisantekraal site is licensed as an airport, this licence will have to be expanded for the airport to handle bigger aircraft and more traffic. It also has to be classified as a designated airport, which will allow it to handle scheduled traffic. This process is mainly centred around airport security. "This means that if we achieve the desired milestones, we'll get this licence," says Ferguson. The more challenging matter will be an application to the national Department of Transport (DoT) for the site be licensed as an international airport. "This immediately means that the Border Management Authority becomes involved, and if you do not have buy-in here, you'll struggle to clear this hurdle," says Ferguson. "But, we believe we can show national government the immense value of building the Winelands airport, especially to international carriers and the environment. "We already have the written support of the City of Cape Town and the Western Cape government." Ferguson says RSA.Aero is in the process of handing in its international licence application to the DoT. Heavy Hitters RSA.Aero is certainly not short on experience and knowledge to succeed in its licence application, as it has some heavy hitters on it...

There is a buzz in Cape Town about the development of the new Cape Winelands Airport near Durbanville with the City Council throwing its weight behind the development. The site for the new Cape Winelands Airport t near Durbanville in the Cape has an interesting history as it was chosen and built by the Allied Forces during WWII. After it was required in 2020, the consortium of private owners set out to expand the airport to turn it into a transport hub and springboard for tourism in the region. According to an interview with Biznews, the Director of the Cape Winelands Airport Nick Ferguson said they were a step closer to reality with the first phase of the consultation process completed. The Airports Company of South Africa (ACSA) has objected to the development. The airport is set to launch its first flights in early 2027, ultimately offering a unique airport experience that includes wine tasting, a vineyard, and an outdoor amphitheatre. He also shared their strategy to initially position Winelands Airport as a cost-effective alternative destination for airlines who are currently burdened with carrying extra fuel when flying to Cape Town because their nearest diversion destination is O.R Tambo, located 2 hours north. This move not only promises financial benefits to airlines but also a significant reduction in carbon emissions. This strategic shift could potentially earn Winelands Airport the title of the World's Greenest Airport.

It's February 2014 and Hawks Warrant Officer Johan Combrinck has received a tip-off through Interpol that Bulgarian men were busy constructing a large drug lab in a mansion in the Cape Town suburb of Durbanville. On the evening of 24 February Combrinck parked his car opposite the house and conducted a steak-out. The smell of sulphur was in the air, a sign to Combrinck that chemicals used for processing drugs were nearby. In the house Combrinck could see movement. And then a man wearing a hazmat suite and gas mask appears in sight. It's the same equipment which Combrinck and his men use to protect themselves from hazardous chemicals when they destroy drug labs. The next day Combrinck and his Hawks colleagues arrive at the house with a court order. They knock on the door. The man who opens it introduces himself as Asen Ivanov. Sunday Times · TimesLIVE

If you've never heard of Banele Vakele or Tembela Wines, listen to this episode. He's such a charismatic guy, with a smile that stretches from ear to ear, and a soulful chuckle. Tembela Wines is the newest South African producer to join the Vine Street Imports portfolio. He makes a Chenin Blanc and a Syrah, sourced from regions you wouldn't necessarily expect (Durbanville for the Chenin, an area better known for Sauvignon Blanc, and a nice yin-yang mix for the Syrah from Constantia and the Swartland). In the words of wine critic Tim Atkin, “Banele Vakele is an exciting young winemaker who is rapidly making a name for himself.” Wine critic Neal Martin names Banele as one of the many winemakers who are “breaking down barriers, inspiring others and eroding the stigma that wine is supposedly made for one sector of society and not another.” In this episode you'll hear all about Banele's journey to becoming a winemaker, from his humble upbringings in Khayelitsha to stints in Burgundy, Oregon, and beyond. You'll hear him wax poetic about Natasha Williams of Lelie van Saron, Adi Badenhorst of A.A. Badenhorst Family Wines, Duncan Savage of Savage Wines, and the Verdelho vineyard that holds special meaning for him. And most importantly, you'll hear why Banele named his brand after his late mother, Tembela. Hosted by Charlotte Alsaadi. Special thanks to SNACKTIME for the music! His outspoken views on the South African government and what needs to change made him a fan favourite with the BizNews community. Rob Hersov – who has worked with Rupert Murdoch and Johann Rupert – joined the BizNews Power Hour to discuss his exciting African Gold SPAC. According to Bloomberg, the SPAC is targeting gold assets on the African continent and ‘raised a more-than-expected $360m ahead of a listing in New York on Friday. The 60-year old businessman joked that his mining magnate father – Basil Hersov – laughed when he was told about his son's latest business endeavour. ‘He really burst out laughing when I told him what I was doing. He said, ‘you've tried everything in your career to avoid getting into the mining industry and here you are, aged 60. He thought it was so funny.' In a BizNews exclusive, Hersov also revealed that he has purchased an airport in the Western Cape. Fisantekraal Airport – located just 13 km away from Durbanville – was built in 1943 by the British, says Hersov, and has four runways. ‘We want to build the Lanseria Airport of Cape Town. We're renaming it Cape Winelands Airport.' Hersov is no stranger to the aviation industry, founding Marquis Jet Europe – which he later sold to Warren Buffett. ‘Buffett called me in 2004 and said, ‘I'm buying your business', said Hersov to Alec Hogg in an interview last year.
Vanessa's guest on In the Zone on Friday, 18 June 2021 at 11:45 was Executive Mayor, Dan Plato. The Executive Mayor recently engaged with people living on the street in various parts of the Cape Town CBD, Greenpoint, Durbanville and along the N1 and N2, reaching out together with Reintegration Unit officials. This forms part of the City of Cape Town Give Dignity campaign, which promotes sustainable solutions to help people get off the street. The growing number of people living on our streets has become a topic that many of our listeners and community members in the Helderberg have expressed deep concern over. The City of Cape Town Give Dignity campaign aims to promote sustainable solutions and advocates for alternative, more impactful ways to help people living on the street to reintegrate back into society. By donating via the official Give Dignity SnapScan, or by giving directly to a NGO or shelter, residents can help to fund warm beds, social worker support, substance abuse rehab, and other support to help people rebuild their lives off the streets.

This week in Being Green, Glynis Crook speaks to Alison Davison, Head for Waste Minimisation for the City of Cape Town, about a pilot project to divert organic waste from landfills. In South Africa, a third of the food produced is never consumed and 90% of it ends up in rubbish dumps. There it produces carbon dioxide and methane gas, which is even more devastating for the climate. The good news is that national government is responding to the challenge and in the Western Cape, the provincial government has set a target for a 50% diversion of organic waste from landfills by 2022 and 100% by 2027. In February the City of Cape Town launched a trial project, providing residents with 5 litre buckets which they can take home and use for their food waste. Participants then return them to one of eight designated sites across the city where the container will be decanted, cleaned and handed back. At the end of June, the City will then assess whether the programme has the potential for further rollout. To find our more you can speak to staff at one of the drop-off sites in Belhar, Killarney, Hout Bay, Woodstock, the CBD, Claremont, Durbanville, and Somerset West, or e-mail: re.cycling@capetown.gov.za.

In episode 44, we talk to Brian Sango, aka The Property Guy, whose story reads like Paolo Coelho's "The Alchemist", so be prepared to believe in dreams. Brian is originally from Zimbabwe, he moved to Cape Town in his teens after having a dream about Table Mountain and the city. He told his mom about the dream and she suggested he move to Cape Town. So he did. He didn't know anyone in the city and started off as a parking attendant and cleaner at a Woolworths restaurant in Durbanville. One day, one of the waiters at the restaurant fell sick and he was asked to help serve customers and was soon promoted to a permanent watering position. During his tenure as a waiter, he met a couple that always wanted to be served by him and they'd always try to invite him to their offices. Little did he know that that couple owned the largest Remax franchise in the Western Cape; they eventually hired him as a PA and gave him a rent free apartment in Vredehoek. Brian stayed at Remax from 2010 to 2013 where he learned a lot about the real estate business, especially advertising and marketing. In 2012, he became a licensed real estate professional, left Remax in 2013 and joined a family business selling real estate. A few years later, when the company relocated to Johannesburg, he was invited to join another property company, where he was tasked with selling property online in Johannesburg and Pretoria, from Cape Town. Over a period of 5 years, he was able to sell 540 flats (apartments) online without ever having set foot in the apartments or neighborhoods where the apartments were located. His success in this business, led him to launch his own company, Property Made Easy, which works with clients all over the world and helps investors invest in the metros and township properties in South Africa. Niche Radio — A winery as imposing as Durbanville Hills was always going to need a cellar master with matching personality and skill. Martin Moore was that person, appointed in 1998 while the cellar was still under construction. Martin was attracted to winemaking whilst growing up in Worcester, spending many a weekend on a farm – attentively watching vineyards coming into production and wine being produced at a small winery. Come Wine With Us was privileged enough to be working with Durbanville Hills the last five years on specialized curated events. Known for their delicious crisp Sauvignon Blanc’s I went to chat to Martin about their brand NEW range called the ‘Reserve Range”. For the month of November, we will be hosting our last Come Wine With Us events for the year in Durban and JHB with Durbanville Hills Reserve Range. Be sure not to miss these special events. www.durbanvillehills.co.za
Niche Radio — Neal from Kids Emporium, Durbanville, Cape Town, shares with us the importance on getting their assistance on fitting a car seat for your car. Believe me, with baby number 3, I wish I engaged in this service on baby number 1. It can be such a hassle trying to install a car seat for the first, second, third etc… time, plus no two seats are the same and the associated complications with each car type. I also discuss a great idea of having a competition giveaway involving a lineup of parents having to rush from the starting line and compete on who can install the different car seats into the different cars the fastest. Something I quickly had to learn in travelling with my wife with Uber where you are being billed by the minute, plus the added distraction of two children, a service dog, and then person’s around you vying for your attention or a thief looking for an opportune moment. Kids Emporium is also offering R500 off their selective car seat models.
On a summer morning in 1997, a man was arrested with a plastic bag full of party drugs in a park in Pretoria. The man was Wouter Basson, also known as Dr. Death. As the number of people waiting for houses in the Western Cape edges close to half a million, desperate individuals and families have erected structures in some of the most unlikely places to live - cemeteries around Cape Town. While the City of Cape Town cannot quantify exactly how widespread the phenomenon is, it says affected cemetries include Maitland, Durbanville and Groote Schuur. Destitute people who've found shelter in these sites say while it's not the ideal place to build a life, it's the only option they have. Sisanda Nkoala tells us more
