We have is a very special free form conversation with Eddie Yoon, author of Superconsumers. He is also the category design guru to the Fortune 500. Recently, we collaborated on an article for Harvard Business Review “5 Ways to Stimulate Cash Flow in a Downturn.” In this episode, we bring that article to life as we talk about two big ideas: how to be thoughtfully aggressive and radically generous. Innovations Through Adversities Christopher and Eddie share some stories about what is currently happening in the US. Christopher acknowledges the fact that the figures during daily briefings are not just numbers, they are people who have friends, families, and relationships. “I just feel deep sadness and concern right now for all small businesses and large businesses. I think a lot of innovations will come through it, as it always does in adversities but this is one of those I cant wait to be on the other side of it.” - Eddie Yoon Thoughtfully Aggressive, Radically Generous Christopher shares how they have been thinking and researching the book they are working on and how these two ideas started to resonate with people in this time of crisis. “We have a unique opportunity now to be radically generous, best we can and that can be financially and thoughtfully aggressive. Some of our businesses are threatened. Most businesses are down in meaningful ways. As business leaders, we got to navigate through this the best we can.” - Christopher Lochhead Eddie shares that in a time of uncertainty, we don’t know what is going to work. However, if we lean into being radically generous, and thoughtfully aggressive, we'll be fine throughout this. “When you're in a crisis, you got to keep it simple and I think these principles are not that simple, but they are emotional. That's the key part, cause sometimes in fight or flight, your brain doesn't always work. Emotions are what you can hold on to and that's something people can use to discern. Is it a radically generous thing or not? Am I being a chicken or should I be more thoughtfully aggressive about it?” - Eddie Yoon No Best Time To Launch Than Now For companies and brands who got caught up in the planning stage of launching a new product, Christopher and Eddie give advice that there’s no best time to launch than now. “I think, that self-awareness is the thing that makes me feel comfortable. Category creation and design is the ultimate growth strategy. You should be doing it anyway.” - Eddie Yoon To learn more about how to be thoughtfully aggressive and radically generous. and more information about Eddie Yoon, download and listen to this episode Bio: Eddie Yoon is the founder of EddieWouldGrow, LLC, a think tank and advisory firm on growth strategy. In this episode, Christopher tackles an article that appeared in Harvard Business Review which he co-wrote with Nicolas Cole and special guest for today, Eddie Yoon. Eddie is the author of Super Consumers and is considered a Category Design Guru of Fortune 500. Today, we will discuss the thinking behind the article, specifically about the power of data flywheel and how high-growth companies used this to stay on top. Frustration with Misinformation Eddie discusses the reason behind writing this article with Christopher and Nicolas. Basically, it was sharing the same frustration about companies commensurate misinformation or misunderstanding on becoming the first-mover versus category creators. “I just think, not only are they being misled, companies are in the relentless pursuit of being first. Let’s think about how to actually build a sustainable advantage at a category queen.” - Eddie Yoon Furthermore, Eddie shares how he has observed this everywhere and that he is hopeful that people would take that energy that’s been misdirected to “being first”, towards building a flywheel. Missionary vs. Mercenary Eddie shares they did tons of analysis which basically asks “what’s your motivation for creating a category, are you a missionary or a mercenary?” He says that mercenaries see the economics and they try to shortcut what is the fastest way to get to 76% to get the valuation. On the other hand, Missionaries are those who care about the product and the category being screwed up and would work towards improvement. Eddie further discusses where radical differentiation would come in along with the transformational outcomes. He also says radical generosity is behind this. Data Flywheel Eddie shares the study they conducted for the article. Basically, he looked at 10 years worth of Fortune 100`fastest growing company list. He determined if he can identify fast-growing companies between those that were truly category creators. The markers he used were great product, service, company and data flywheel. “If you are growing in a very specific way, if you have this flywheel, your valuation is meaningfully higher. You have 5x market cap for every dollar in revenue.” - Eddie Yoon To hear more about The Difference Between a First Mover and a Category Creator and more relevant information from Eddie Yoon, download and listen to the episode. Today, Eddie Yoon unpacks a recent Harvard Business Review article with his co-author Christopher. Together, they answer some questions, concerns, and explain further why you should quit your corporate job and go solo. It's All in the Data Eddie and Christopher's HBR article has been receiving a lot of attention. Some of the people amid the buzz expressed their concerns about their thesis. But the data say it all: nearly 70% of solopreneurs make $100,000-250,000 in a year. This figure is almost twice as much as the average US household. And it is much higher than what Glassdoor reports the average US executive makes yearly—$121,500. It seems solopreneurs are doing as well, if not exceedingly better, than most executives. “If solopreneur was an industry and a company, everyone would be flocking to this industry in the same way that people did it for Silicon Valley or investment banking or consulting.” - Eddie Yoon Importance of IPOs Initial public offering (IPOs) have always been tech-related. But there are notable people who have done it in a non-digitized fashion. One example is Steve Hughes who launched a special purpose acquisition company and eventually skyrocketed as a solopreneur. To go solo, a bridge needs to be crossed. You must know your investor story and who your target investors are. You must also know why they should believe that you're worthy of your multiple. “I think that more people are figuring out that market exists and [so], ‘Why not me?'” - Eddie Yoon Breaking Out to Do Better So many people are afraid to break out because of the corporate mothership and the financial aspect tied to the choice. But there are those who confronted their fear of not making enough and ended up earning more while working less. The other odd benefit to going solo is that as an outsider, solopreneurs tend to be a lot smarter than those who are tied to a company. “Maybe that's the extra value that perspective gives you.” - Eddie Yoon To hear more about the ultimate way of monetizing yourself and making an emotional business case for going solo, download and listen to the episode. On today's episode, growth strategist and author Eddie Yoon joins us. He has written the book “Superconsumers”. Together with Christopher, he talks about failures, category design, marketing, and how introverts in an extroverted world can thrive by choice. “Failure is ultimately a good thing and being left out is ultimately gonna force you to carve out your niche.” - Eddie Yoon Three Things We Learned Niche down if you don't fit the mold This stands true in any setting where success in one's endeavor is the ultimate goal, including the business world. Bigger companies have a premium place for extroverts who can look the part of a successful individual in such environments. But for introverts who know what they do and are good at it, the prevalent pattern is to niche down and prevent oneself from playing the games that come with being part of the extroverted world of business. Introverts are more likely to find success as solopreneurs Introverts tend to be mavericks who process the world in a different way than most people do. They go against the grain by consuming a lot of information in solo or in quiet spaces, enabling them to come up with points of view that differ from the conventional wisdom fed to us. This unique way of thinking makes them exceptional, even if they don't fit in with the crowd. Like-minded people make you successful Most introverts are known to like it best to mingle with people who share the same way of thinking and learn the same way they do. And while this comes with the possibility of ending up lonely, being able to engage with people similar to you can actually be more beneficial. Going solo in an extroverted world run the risk of being lonely and missed. But people ultimately have the freedom to take the best path to their self-determined success. Eddie Yoon is the founder of EDDIEWOULDGROW, a think tank and advisory firm on growth strategy. Prior to that he was a partner at The Cambridge Group where he worked for 18 years, a strategy consulting firm founded in 1975 that specializes in helping CEOs and senior leadership teams within Fortune 1000 corporations drive growth by understanding how to unlock new sources of consumer demand. In the last 5 years, he has helped double numerous businesses-cable media company, food brand, beverage company, pet food brand, consumer robotics, standby generators-from several hundred million to close to a billion dollars. Key Takeaways: [3:40] Regardless of if you are a large company or an up and coming one, many people enter into “growth” with the mindset that it’s a competition, but that strategy rarely has long-term success. [5:19] Why only 1% of companies capture 80% of category growth. [7:34] For category minded growth, a great exercise is to pose a question for yourself within your industry, for example in a market where there is a steady stream of people purchasing fried chicken, how do you double the amount of consumers purchasing fried chicken? [8:13] There’s only three ways to grow your category: grow the number of people who consume your category, increase the number of units per person, or increase the price per unit. [10:05] Ask yourself, what are you famous for? And never forget that’s what you are famous for and that you will never lose that distinction. [14:47] Morbid or not, never underestimate the laziness of the American consumer. Making people’s lives easier to give you money is always a good thing. [17:37] In order to grow, you must first identify and target where your category might “spike” and recognize the potential that it could fail if you make a miscalculation on where the demand actually is. [21:37] Oftentimes, data scientists are unable to connect demand in ways that make logical sense. Typically, the answer does not like within the data, but within the consumer context. [23:20] For every Super Consumer out there, there are two to three people who would like to be like them but don’t know how. [26:34] People are not born Super Consumers. They evolve that way based on a series of life-triggering events. [28:23] Find the origin stories of your Super Consumers, and target your growth based on those demographics. [32:47] The magic of marketing is found in these outlier consumers. If you hear a reference to a place or for a service from three different, credible sources, you’re gonna go.   Mentioned in this Episode: www.FranchiseEuphoria.com/Franchise5 josh@franchiseeuphoria.com eddiewouldgrow.net Eddie Yoon

You just need to reinvent the way that it is being offered, and reinvent the way it gets delivered. That’s the key. • Disruption completely changes the way an industry works. You don’t have to be as big as Uber or Amazon. You just have to think about what can be done that the competition isn’t doing. • A company that thrives is one that knows that not every customer is the same. They empathize with customers and strive to delight them. These companies know they have a lot to learn from the customers. • Superconsumers are your customers who come back over and again, your loyal customers. They want and deserve sympathy, respect, and generosity. When the company delivers what the customer wants, the results will be dramatic and bigger than ever imagined. • Social media is a great place to find your superconsumers.
