Rusty Komori was the varsity boys' tennis coach at the Punahou School in Honolulu from 1994 until 2015. During his tenure, the school won the state championship each and every year. That's a record unmatched by any other coach in any other sport. But Rusty is not just excellent at taking a diverse group of teenagers and turning them into champions — he masterfully coaches employers on how to adapt his methods for the workplace, transforming typical office environments into ones that enjoy a culture of consistent success.  Rusty is the author of the recently published book Superior: Creating A Superior Culture Of Excellence. As he details in this week's episode, the core of success — in sports or business — starts at the top. If a dictatorial boss heads an organization, it won't achieve the same success as if a leader guides it.  “Love” may be the lowest score in tennis, but it's absolutely what you need to convey to be at the top of your game in business. It's hard to rank all the things I love about Russell Motter – history teacher, lover of great music, epic thespian, good cook, creative innovator, Atlanta Braves and Falcons fan, among others – but the fact he mixes a mean Sazerac, my favorite cocktail, sits at the top of the list. Russell and I taught together in the history department at ‘Iolani School from 2010 to 2014. When I say taught together, I mean it literally. We team-taught US History, merging our two classes into one very cool section that at times traveled to the outer edges of innovation in education and what history could be. (To see a very cool video about our work, click here.) But I get ahead of myself. Russell has a BA and a masters in history from the University of Hawaii at Manoa. He has been teaching in the history department at ‘Iolani School for 26 years, and was its department head from 2005 – 2013. Russell and I co-founded and co-directed the Education Innovation Lab at ‘Iolani School during the 2013/2014 school year. He has been a curriculum consultant for Punahou School's PUEO program; he coordinated ‘Iolani's capstone program for two years. Currently he is the course leader for ‘Iolani's APUS history program. Russell has also taught at the college level here in Honolulu. If you ever have a chance to read Russell's resume you will see that he has a miscellaneous projects section a mile long. Highlights include working on a team that brought technology to ‘Iolani's campus in the form of a K12 iPad 1:1 program, the second school in Hawaii to do so. I also served on that team with Russell. It was a blast. More than anything, in my humble opinion, Russell's work bringing incredible guest speakers to ‘Iolani School is a highlight. Speakers include Barbara Field, Kareem Abdul Jabbar, John Hope Franklin (a personal hero of mine), Wynton Marsalis and Isabel Wilkerson, Pulitzer Prize Winning author of the incredible book, The Warmth of Other Suns. Oh, I almost forgot, Russell, originally from the Great State of Georgia, acts in local theater productions here in Honolulu, is a master mixologist and, in an earlier life, was a hotel bellman. To say he has lived a rich and intentional life is an understatement. My editor, creative consultant and sound engineer is the wondrously creative, Evan Kurohara (SØZEN), a self-taught audio engineer and producer born and raised in Hilo, Hawaiʻi.  He is currently working in Honolulu and aspiring to reach new heights by dedicating himself to exceptional quality work through creative and analytical meticulousness (his words!).  Our original theme music is provided by my friend of 40 years, virtuoso pianist, Michael Sloan. Michael has produced 12 albums with over 100 songs and is featured in Apple Music, Spotify, and all the other major music platforms. You can also find his work at his YouTube channel. When I called Robert Pennybacker a “Renaissance Man” during my interview he seemed not to know why I attached the term to him. I can say with some confidence that folks in Robert's network see him as exactly that. He is a poet, writer, producer, director, traveler, technologist, deep thinker and the very definition of both a specialist and generalist. He is also one of the founders of HIKI NŌ, arguably the most remarkable state student news network on Planet Earth. This is no joke, listeners; I am not engaging in hyperbole. There are lots of student news programs around the nation, but none with the mission and vision, nor the scope and reach of HIKI NŌ. A USC Film School graduate, Robert has driven HIKI NŌ forward for 10 years now, the last year a remarkable pivot during this Covid-19 pandemic. He is the Vice President of Learning Initiatives at PBS Hawai'i, where HIKI NŌ lives.  This program's impact on kids is simply staggering and today we are going to hear how it was built and what drove Robert to move it forward. Robert Pennybacker's resume is long and deep. Early on he was a local television marketing director. In late 2000 he started his own advertising/production company called Pennybacker Creative, LLC, then joined PBS Hawaiʻi as Vice President of Creative Services in late 2007. His awards and recognition include the 1984 Regional Emmy Award for Television Promotional Spots; 3 Pele Awards (Hawaii's ADDY Awards) for excellence in advertising; he oversaw the promotional campaign for one of the most successful network affiliation switches ever (when Hawaii's NBC affiliate switched to FOX). Robert is an independent filmmaker who has written more than 20 documentaries about life and people in Hawaii. As I wrote earlier, he is a poet and writer. In 2007 he became the Vice President of Creative Services at PBS Hawai'i and oversaw all local programming, on-air promotion, interstitial production, station branding, and the production of on-air fundraising for the station, as well as management of personnel. Robert and I go back pretty far. We played high school football together back in the 70s at Punahou School. He was a tight end, I played center, which makes this moment special for me. In this episode I’m talking to Lisa Benshea who runs the members’ travel program at the Santa Barbara Museum of Art in California. It’s a relatively rare affinity travel program that doesn’t just offer great destinations, but makes sure there’s always a strong art or architecture component in the itinerary to satisfy its travelers’ interests. And they must be doing it right, because the program is about to celebrate its 50th anniversary. And even though art–-and museums in particular-–are a common part of so many visits to major cities whether it’s part of a group tour or individually planned, relatively few travelers book a trip specifically to see the art, or make it the main reason for choosing a destination. I talk to Lisa about this, about who those travelers are, and about what makes the art worth traveling for. We get into well-known great destinations for art, like Italy, but she also comes through with some surprising recommendations that most of us wouldn’t think of as an art destination, and at least one that’s probably not on your travel radar at all. We also talk a little bit about affinity travel in general, discover a task that all tour managers need to be able to pull off if the situation arises, and she drops a very tasty hint for anyone with a Nespresso machine. ---------- Lisa Benshea is the Travel and Special Programs Manager at the Santa Barbara Museum of Art. SBMA’s Travel Program, which began in 1972, typically puts on around 18 international and domestic tours per year for museum members. Lisa was born and raised in Honolulu, where she worked as a T.A. at the art school of the Honolulu Art Museum and would volunteer at events put on by the museum, where her mom and grandmother had both worked. She attended Punahou School for 13 years and went abroad twice on school trips. She came to California to attend Occidental College, where she earned her B.A. in Art History and was given the opportunity to study in Italy for six months. During and after college, she worked at museums and as an event planner for an autism organization, before taking time off to volunteer in India. When she moved to Santa Barbara in 2007, she found her perfect job planning trips for SBMA members, a job that combines her love for people, travel, events, and art. From Teach For America to leading her own classroom at the Punahou School in Honolulu, Hawai‘i, Torres opens up about her journey as a social justice educator. Throughout the episode we circle back to three major questions:What is my work in justice now, given my position of privilege? How can I make my kids feel safe/heard/comforted at this moment in time? How can I continuously reflect and grow in my own awareness about matters of justice in the world? We know that our students will face a variety of challenges, injustices and problems in the world. It’s not about what they will experience but a matter of how they might experience it. Social justice oriented educators strive to equip students with the tools to navigate the challenges (not necessarily solve them). We help students understand the “danger of a single story.” Finally, we explore the tension between staying aware and protecting our mental health/managing tumultuous times through self-care. When I first heard Dan Kinzer planned to walk the entire circumference of Oʻahu in order to find its “genius,” I immediately concluded I had to have him on this podcast. Even better, for this 7th “on the road” edition I wanted to catch him on the last day of his two-week walkabout. And so it happened. About 9:00AM on a Monday, as he walked his final miles along Kalanianaʻoli Highway in the morning Hawaiʻi sun, Dan, a cup of coffee in hand, paused in my dinning room and fielded my many questions. We talked about planet walking, exploring Antartica, his projects at international schools around the world and his love of deeper learning. Oh yes, we talked about the “genius” he found in every corner of this island of Oʻahu during 21 days of walking. Dan is a special thinker whose mind knows no limits. He is deeply devoted to justice, level playing fields, sustainability, service-learning, biomimicry and student agency. While standing up his Pacific Blue Studios, he serves on the Governing Board of an extraordinary public charter school called SEEQS. From SEEQS.org we get this wonderfully concise bio of Dan: “An avid traveler and adventurer, Daniel Kinzer spent a decade living, working, and learning in international schools, non-profits, and social enterprises across more than 60 countries on seven continents. Since graduating from Vanderbilt University with a degree in Psychology and Neuroscience, he has focused on nurturing explorers and change-makers by growing a learning ecosystem that can inspire and empower them. From 2016-2019, Daniel served as the Director of the Luke Center for Public Service at Punahou School in Honolulu, and as a Teacher Fellow for National Geographic and Ecology Project International.  He is currently completing a master's degree in the field of biomimicry where he's concentrated on marine ecology and innovative solutions to climate change and ocean-related challenges, as well as applying biomimicry to complex social issues, especially reimagining education. As of 2019, Daniel is launching and co-creating Pacific Blue Studios: a Pacific network of community and place-based, youth-led, design and impact studios leveraging biomimicry, indigenous perspective and cutting-edge technologies as vehicles to help realize a sustainable, resilient, regenerative and inclusive future in Hawai'i, across the Pacific, and around our Blue Planet.” To learn more about Pacific Blue Studios check out Dan's LinkedIn page: https://www.linkedin.com/in/danielkinzer/.  The post 19. Interviews by Brainard Carey

Maui has been Dick Nelson's home since 1975, when he arrived as the Director of the Wailea Arts Center. Hawaii was not new to him, for his family had moved to Hawaii from Sodus, N.Y. when he was five years old. He graduated from Punahou School, received his bachelor’s degree in art from the California College of Arts and Crafts, served as a Marine lieutenant in Korea, and returned to accept the position of Art Department Chairman at Punahou. During his twenty-two years with the school, he spent his summers painting watercolors. A sabbatical leave at Yale provided Dick with a once-in-a-lifetime experience to take the Josef Albers color course. There has been no greater influence on his educational career, and the residual benefits are very much in evidence today. He earned his master’s degree during his second sabbatical at Ohio State University. He now pursues his own career in painting and teaching. His days are currently divided between these two loves. He has brought a color process to watercolor painting which he discovered while working with printers. By incorporating the same three primary colors used in printing, he was able to paint the full range of colors in what he calls his Tri-hue palette. As a result of this approach, Dick developed a Tri-hue teaching and painting device. Although his teaching is primarily done in his studio today, he has participated in numerous workshops nationally and in Canada. In this episode, Christopher tackles an article that appeared in Harvard Business Review which he co-wrote with Nicolas Cole and special guest for today, Eddie Yoon. Eddie is the author of Super Consumers and is considered a Category Design Guru of Fortune 500. Today, we will discuss the thinking behind the article, specifically about the power of data flywheel and how high-growth companies used this to stay on top. Frustration with Misinformation Eddie discusses the reason behind writing this article with Christopher and Nicolas. Basically, it was sharing the same frustration about companies commensurate misinformation or misunderstanding on becoming the first-mover versus category creators. “I just think, not only are they being misled, companies are in the relentless pursuit of being first. Let’s think about how to actually build a sustainable advantage at a category queen.” - Eddie Yoon Furthermore, Eddie shares how he has observed this everywhere and that he is hopeful that people would take that energy that’s been misdirected to “being first”, towards building a flywheel. Missionary vs. Mercenary Eddie shares they did tons of analysis which basically asks “what’s your motivation for creating a category, are you a missionary or a mercenary?” He says that mercenaries see the economics and they try to shortcut what is the fastest way to get to 76% to get the valuation. On the other hand, Missionaries are those who care about the product and the category being screwed up and would work towards improvement. Eddie further discusses where radical differentiation would come in along with the transformational outcomes. He also says radical generosity is behind this. Data Flywheel Eddie shares the study they conducted for the article. Basically, he looked at 10 years worth of Fortune 100`fastest growing company list. He determined if he can identify fast-growing companies between those that were truly category creators. The markers he used were great product, service, company and data flywheel. “If you are growing in a very specific way, if you have this flywheel, your valuation is meaningfully higher. You have 5x market cap for every dollar in revenue.” - Eddie Yoon To hear more about The Difference Between a First Mover and a Category Creator and more relevant information from Eddie Yoon, download and listen to the episode. He is the author of the book, Superconsumers: A Simple, Speedy and Sustainable Path to Superior Growth (Harvard Business School Press, 2016). His book was named as one of the Best Business Books of 2017 by Strategy & Business. SANDCAST: Beach Volleyball with Tri Bourne and Travis Mewhirter

Maddison McKibbin was finished. Finished with volleyball. Finished with being overseas. Finished with not being paid. Finished with the shady ownership of international volleyball teams. Finished with it all. He had played the game long enough, beginning at Hawaii's famed Outrigger Canoe Club then onto Punahou School, where he became a three-time state champ, which preceded four years at USC, where he made a pair of Final Four appearances. And now there he was, in Greece, looking at his bed, where a random Brazilian man was laying, fast asleep. Evidently, the owner of McKibbin's team had signed a new outside hitter. He didn't tell McKibbin, though apparently he did give the new Brazilian outside the keys to the apartment. That was it. McKibbin was out. He was going home. Was going to finish his Master's Degree. Was getting out of volleyball.  Time for something else.  Riley McKibbin, Maddison's older brother of two years, had other plans. He was going to play in Italy. Would Maddison want to come, just to kick it for three months, drink some wine and hang out in Italy? For that, sure, he could delay grad school for a few months to hang in Italy. So long as he wasn't playing volleyball, he was in. And then Riley had another idea. “What if we give beach a try?” They had the talent. There was no questioning that. They had been raised in uber-competitive Hawaii, alongside Taylor and Trevor Crabb, Spencer McLaughlin, Brad Lawson, Tri Bourne, competing occasionally against AVP legends Stein Metzger and Kevin Wong and Mike Lambert. Both of the McKibbins had played in FIVB Youth tournaments, and they proved they were good enough indoors to compete and make a living at a professional level. The transition from indoor to beach sounds simple enough. It's a similar game with similar skillsets, where the underlying principle is the same: pass, set, hit. It, of course, was not. They weren't entirely sure what the state of their beach skills was, so they bought a handful of AVP volleyballs from Costco and exiled themselves to a court in Venice Beach, a few zip codes away from any serious players. And so there it was that you could find two professional volleyball players, practicing in Venice Beach, legitimately mortified that someone might see them dusting off the rust of a game they hadn't played for the better part of a decade. “We couldn't even hit it over the net,” Riley said in an earlier interview. “The transition from indoor to the beach is so hard. We're both indoor players, and making that switch is a lot harder than people think.” Unless, of course, you're the McKibbins. In the first qualifier they entered, not long after scraping the rust off their beach games, in New York City in 2015, they qualified. And thus the Beard Bros were born. Their relationship is both like that of any other siblings – fighting and squabbling wrapped in brotherly love – and yet it is also nothing like that of any other siblings. The McKibbins are partners in everything they do. They're roommates. They're business partners. They're AVP partners. They shoot the wildly popular McKibbin Volleyball videos together. They vlog together. They play together. Even when Maddison won AVP San Francisco while Riley sat out with an injury, even when he was fielding calls from Reid Priddy, even when he had no shortage of partner options, there was never any question whom he would be playing with: Riley McKibbin. “Riley,” he said on SANDCAST, “is the reason I'm playing volleyball right now.” And so it is that Maddison, so long as Riley is healthy, will not play with another who's last name is not McKibbin. They're a package deal. Whether they're vlogging about the frustrations of volleyball, filming a tutorial from Kelly Reeves on the nuances of bumpsetting, or practicing against Sean Rosenthal and Chase Budinger, they're going to do it together.  The only thing, for now, that it seems isn't on their agenda?  Shaving.

My guest this week is Yumin Choi, Managing Director of Bain Capital Ventures Healthcare team. Yumin joined Bain's Boston team last year after ten years culminating as a General Partner at HLM Venture Partners. At HLM he led a variety of investments across healthcare IT and services sectors, serving as board director for AbleTo, mPulse Mobile, Oceans Healthcare, Payspan (acquired by Primus Capital), Spinal Kinetics, and Vets First Choice. Yumin has a really interesting background... born in Seoul, South Korea, lived in Japan as a child and moved to Hawaii at age 10 where he attended the Punahou School, President Obama’s alma mater. He's an investor and mentor in several healthcare accelerators, including Blueprint Health, Healthbox, Startup Health, Rock Health, and 500 Startups. Yumin serves with me on the board of the New England Venture Capital Association, and on the board of overseers for the Boston Symphony Orchestra, and the oversight committee for Boston University’s Coulter Foundation. He also served as a lecturer in the Gordon Institute at Tufts University, where he taught entrepreneurial finance. I think my conversation with Yumin about the job of being a VC is probably the most illuminating I’ve had to date, focusing on the importance of building a network, looking for patterns in the dots of what can be hundreds of near misses and good ideas below the threshold of Yes, and staying open to opportunities regardless of their source or pedigree. Our second segment, though, is about the single event that probably shaped Yumin’s views on the value of healthcare innovation more than any other... his own diagnosis with cancer at age 31, and a subsequent treatment regime that - all by itself - almost killed him. This is not the usual blah blah about relationships in venture, folks, try as we always do to avoid that. My conversation with Yumin was about his journey to understand why what he was doing mattered, and I was inspired by him and his story in a way I hope you will be too. CEO and the founder of America Online, Steve Case in Silicon Valley. Steve recently released his first book, The Third Wave, on what the next era of the american startup ecosystem will look like for entrepreneurs. Steve is now the founding partner of the investment firm, Revolution partners which bets on tech entrepreneurs outside of Silicon Valley. So far they’ve backed startups like LivingSocial, Sweetgreen, Bigcommerce, and Handy. Steve became CEO of AOL in 1991 and led the company until the Merger with Time Warner in 2001 in a $164 billion deal that was eventually deemed one of the worst mergers in history. Case attended the prestigious Punahou School, where Barack Obama also went to high school. In 2011 the president appointed him to lead the Startup America Partnership, a nonprofit aimed at spurring the growth of new companies. His Case Foundation is devoted to employing the Internet for more effective and efficient philanthropy. Steve attended Williams College where he received a Bachelor’s degree.  Lets listen into the Founder of the company that got america online, Steve Case interviewed in Silicon Valley Last month.    Quick question. How many emails do you have in your inbox right now? A hundred? A thousand? Twenty thousand?  If your email is anything like mine used to be, the answer is too many. But here’s the thing—even though I knew I wanted to do something about it, I didn’t know how. I knew I’d miss something important if I just deleted them all, and there were too many emails to go through one at a time.  Thankfully I found SaneBox, and I can’t recommend it enough. SaneBox sorts through your email and moves all of the trivial stuff into a different folder so the only messages in your inbox are the ones you actually want to see.  There's also this amazing thing called BlackHole. Move an email into that folder and you’ll never hear from that sender again. It’s so rewarding.  Visit sanebox.com/startupgrind today and get an extra $20 credit on top of the already free two-week trial.   Check it out today and let me know if you love reaching inbox zero as easily as I do nowadays.  Again, that’s S-A-N-E-B-O-X.com/startupgrind
