Strategy in Action Davide Sola is Co-founder of Strategy in Action. He is a Professor at ESCP Business School and a listing professor at other leading business schools. He has more than 20 years of experience in strategy consulting at McKinsey and 3H Partners. Davide has written lots of articles, policy papers and his book "How to Think Strategically" can be purchased on Amazon. Now, married with 3 kids, living in London, he hails from Turin. Summary of the Podcast Introductions Graham and Kevin introduce Davide Sola, a professor at the ESCP business school in London. Davide provides background on his career. He's got previous experience in investment banking and private equity, as well as his current roles as a professor and entrepreneur. The connection between strategy and innovation Davide explains that strategy and innovation are closely linked. Strategy involves making choices to go from point A to point B, and innovation is the result of those strategic choices. He emphasises that strategy without innovation, and innovation without strategy, are both problematic. Successful strategy requires making tough choices about where to play, how to win, and what capabilities and systems to put in place. Aligning the organisation around strategy Davide discusses the importance of aligning the entire organisation around a clear strategic vision and set of objectives. He notes that often different departments or leaders have divergent views on the company's strategic priorities. Davide addresses this with techniques like the "strategy one-pager" to create a shared understanding. Moreover, there is a need for frequent strategic reviews. Plus, the courage to make difficult decisions about what to stop doing. Using technology to enable strategic agility Graham asks about the role of technology and AI in enabling more frequent strategic reviews and analysis. Davide explains that his company, Strategy in Action, aims to make strategic planning more accessible and iterative. This will be done through the use of frameworks, data, and intelligent AI agents that can surface insights and prompt strategic questions. I first met Avantika Daing, a General Partner & Managing Partner at Plum Alley Investments (and Tedx Speaker!) while she was onstage at an Entrepreneurs Roundtable Accelerator event. She was there to share a bit about Plum Alley's Investment thesis as well as unpack six pitches live from early-stage companies. Let's level set a bit so you understand Avantika's and Plum Alley's mission, which revolves around an important number that hasn't moved much in years, despite a lot of effort - 2%.  According to Pitchbook, in 2022, companies founded solely by women garnered just 2% of the total capital invested in VC-backed startups in the United States. Plum Alley only funds gender-diverse companies and works to create an ecosystem to help them not just get funded, but to grow and succeed. That's one of the reasons I wanted to bring Avantika on, to share some of her ways of thinking strategically about funding as an investor, how Plum Alley is working to create a more sustainable funding ecosystem for diverse founding teams, and how she coaches founders to be more strategic about funding, too. Watching Avantika on stage peel back the layers of the onion (one of her favorite metaphors!) on a company's story in conversation with a founder and work to understand the company's potential was fascinating - it's a tremendous act of intellectual rigor and curiosity. Her questions also reminded me that founders can make an investor's job a lot easier through more powerful and intentional storytelling. Another powerful metaphor that Avantika came back to in a number of pitches was the idea of a Basecamp. In other words, Avantika, as a funder, wants to know: Is your company building a core technology or defensible market position (a basecamp) that will provide you with multiple paths to success?  Avantika acknowledged that a “single story” about how your company will “win” or “summit the mountain” is powerful, but she was clear that she prefers companies that are creating a powerful “basecamp”...why? "As I take on more leadership responsibilities, I'm finding that I need more time to step back and do more planning and strategizing. How do I make that time productive so I don't just spin my wheels?" It's true that the more responsibilities you take on the more time you need to step back and plan things out a bit. You can actually keep falling behind if you don't step back and get a little strategic. It is actually a productivity strategy.   PLAN YOUR TIME TO PLAN First, you do have to plan the time. Block it on your calendar. Notice when you blow through the time block and do something else instead. You need to run a few experiments. Try different times of day. Try different techniques during the time you block. Give yourself a trial period maybe weeks or months FIND THE RIGHT TIME Everybody has a “most productive time of day.” It's usually a block of 2-3 hours when we feel fresh. Creativity is easier to access. You have the capacity to do things that require focus. Finding the right time for thinking time is about that space in the day when you are most alert and ready to engage creativity, strategy and imagination. If you are low on energy when you start, you'll likely quit and as the brain will go back to the easy thing. ENGAGE THE SENSES Another way you can help your brain be activated during your thinking time >> thus making it more productive >> is to engage your senses. It's not just reflection but writing too. Not just dreaming but drawing too. Not just planning, but sharing the plan or talking it through with others. STRUCTURE YOUR TIME One of the reasons your thinking time can turn into just wheels spinning is because you don't have a goal or a framework for your time. Having a target for your time will make it more productive. And, a framework can accelerate your thinking. Give you a track to run on so that you move toward your goal. The question was directed toward a common leadership dilemma—it's easy to get sucked into the details and focus on the tactical goals and immediate tasks, and lose sight of the bigger, strategic goals that advance a team forward in the long-term.

Great leaders build success by learning to think differently from the average person. Successful people have sought to master a single skill: The ability to THINK CRITICALLY. Critical thinking is the process of careful and deep thinking about a subject or idea. It includes being able to analyze and weigh facts, to carefully reason, and to make insightful connections. Here are five tips: 1. Learn To Accept Negative Feedback When someone criticizes your work, it doesn't feel good. You'll be tempted to defend yourself, or to close your mind. Don't. Steps to accepting negative feedback Recognize its value Ask for it regularly Reward it. Thank people for it Never punish negative feedback Listen actively Don't respond right away Don't refute the criticism or justify yourself Don't take offense. Don't interpret it as a personal attack. 2. Block Time To Think The whirlwind and urgency of the day is a very strong pull on your time. But don't confuse motion with progress. Don't confuse urgent with important. Critical thinking is hard work. So, when it comes time to analyze facts, block out time in your calendar to engage in deep thought, because it is important. Use some of the following questions to help you analyze: What is the problem preventing you from being successful? If you could solve the problem, what does success look like, how do you measure it? What are the facts and assumptions? What are some alternative solutions to achieve the goal? What are the pros and cons of each alternative? What is the best solution given the goal and your practical constraints? 3. Create The Conditions For Insight Quiet moments: Quiet moments help reduce external perceptual competition (e.g., sights, sounds) for our conscious attention or awareness, allowing the brain to detect weaker signals more readily. Looking inward: Looking inward, or thinking about your thinking (also known as metacognition), shifts the focus of awareness away from older, more established solutions, and away from external input. It also can shift your focus to your thought process itself, as opposed to just the content of your thinking. Positive emotion: Research suggests people are more likely to solve more problems with insight when in a positive mood than in a negative mood. Distance from the problem: When you walk away from the problem and allow your attention to drift, this frees up the conscious mind from focusing on very strong and well-rehearsed signals. 4. Zoom In and Zoom Out One pitfall that prevents critical thinking is focusing only on the detail and the short-term. Zooming Out is essential to big picture decision making. It helps you to put things in context and stress principles that are important, but perhaps you may miss some subtleties and nuances. Zooming In brings the details into sharp focus. Opportunities may look large and compelling, but may lack context. One trap of Zooming In is that the constraints of the details become "the problem to solve" rather than trying to achieve the original outcome. The best leaders work the zoom button in both directions. When faced with a crisis, they can address the immediate situation while seeking structural solutions. They can zoom in to see problems while zooming out to look for similar situations, root causes, and principles or policies that will help prevent the crisis from recurring. 5. Take a Break From The Problem You'll benefit by taking a break and letting all the facts settle in your mind. This allows you space to learn and adapt from your experience and room to process what you have been thinking about and release negative emotions. Welcome to another episode of B2B Marketing and More. I talked to many marketers in the past 6-8 weeks. All of us are looking forward to the re-opening of the economy. Yay! #can’twait   Update the buyer personas and messaging frameworks In the previous episode, I talked about the need to update your marketing plan to align with the reopening. I called out that don’t revise your marketing plan for the sake of revising; you need to understand the behavior changes of your customers which leads to the need to update your buyer personas. B2B customers don’t usually change our behaviors that often so we don’t usually update our buyer personas.   However, I think it’s important to evaluate your customers especially after the pandemic. Understand if there are any behavioral changes you have to take into account. And by the way, the behavioral changes may or may not have an impact on how they use your products. And if there’s a change in how they use your project, another factor you need to look into is your messaging framework. You need to determine if your value proposition and talking points need to change or not. So, evaluating your messaging framework and buyers personas are critical pre-requisites before updating your marketing plan.   Another capability that’s important for marketers to possess is to be nimble and move quickly. You need to develop the ability to think strategically so that you can connect the dots swiftly and identify what needs to change when a crisis strikes.     To help marketers think strategically, I created the “think strategically” series for my monthly webinars from May to August. The whole four months!   In May, I did a webinar on “How to Change Your Marketing Plan Again: Continue to Plan for the Unknown.” I summarized the key points of the webinar in my blog post: Important Templates You Need to Update Your Marketing Plan. I simply want to share some critical elements that should be included in the marketing plan, and I'll explain why these elements are vital. If you have an existing template, you can compare my recommendations with your current templates and determine if it's necessary to refine it. If you don't have one, you can check out my template as a starting point, then customize it based on your company's needs. To me, one way to judge if a marketer can think strategically is his/her ability to create a solid marketing plan. Michael Smith was the CEO of Australia and New Zealand Banking Group Ltd. (ANZ) from 2007 to 2015 following his retirement he remained an Adviser to the Board until July 2017.  He is the Chair of York Butter Factory (YBF) established in 2011.  YBF is the “destination point for innovation in Australia”.  He also holds the position of Senior Adviser Asia Practice at PwC. Prior to this he was President and Chief Executive Officer, The Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation Limited; Chairman, Hang Seng Bank Limited; Global Head of Commercial Banking for the HSBC Group; and Chairman, HSBC Bank Malaysia Berhad. He graduated with honours in Economic Sciences from City University London and in 2015 was awarded an Honorary Doctor of Science from City University London.  In 2013 he was awarded an Honorary Doctor of Laws from Monash University, Melbourne. Today’s show is a continuation of episode 102 where I talked about how many bloggers start out blogging from the heart while others have a strategic, clinical formula. The last podcast told the story of two bloggers who took these very different approaches. Both were ready to give up because neither approach tends to work alone. You have to blog with heart and have a strategy for success. In the last episode I suggested 7 ways to add heart and soul to your blog, and today I’m going to suggest 9 different ways to be strategic with your blogging. In Today’s Episode 9 Different Ways to Be Strategic with Your Blogging If you want your blog to be a business - treat it as one, change your mindset and treat your blog as a business today Have goals - If you don’t know what you are aiming for you won’t get far, define what success means to you, write down your goals then use as a filter for what you do Be strategic about your reader - do some work to understand who your reader is and what their needs, challenges, and dreams are, create an avatar as in episode 33 Know about your brand - What do you want your brand to be, define what you want people to say about you when you are not in the room Develop an editorial strategy - Don’t just write whatever pops into your head, put some strategy behind your content Define the change you are trying to bring about and map out the strategy What type of content will your readers respond to, think strategically about what mediums get the best response Think strategically about the length and frequency of content Experiment, learn and adapt Think about marketing - move beyond the build it and they will come strategy Where are your potential readers gathering? How can you participate in those places? What new technologies are they using, adapt your approach. What type of content do you need to create to attract these readers and get them to share. Check out episode 34 on shareable content. Hooks - How will you get them to connect and keep coming back. Find a hook to get your readers to come back. Ask them to subscribe, (for us email lists are always #1) and find secondary points of connection. Keep in mind what comes after they subscribe, find a process to lead them through Monetization - How are you going to make your blog sustainable? Research available strategies, I give a money map in episode 37 that lists a whole bunch of different ways to monetize. Building something of your own is a good option. Diversifying is a good strategy. Constantly be experimenting, tweaking and evolving - Run constant experiments on all of these different areas. These strategies may sound overwhelming, but just pick one area to focus on. Goal setting or branding can be great methods for kicking off your blog strategy. Then move on to the editorial strategy, or marketing, or whatever you need to fill in the gaps.
