The opportunity recently arose when Ermonela Jaho, one of the most outstanding opera singers, announced as the Artist of the Year 2022 by the International Classical Music Award, came to Wrocław. She performed for the first time in Poland during a gala at the National Forum of Music. The tremendous performance of Violetta in Traviata, moving Cio Cio San in Madame Butterfly, or the eye-watering creation of Sister Angelica in Puccini's Triptych - to speak of just some of the roles that Ermonela Jaho sang on the stage of the Metropolitan Opera, Royal Opera House and Paris Opera. Who today needs the emotions that these creations bring? What will be the future of opera in the era of new technologies? What does the singer regret, and what does she dream of? "Está pensada para hacerte reír, para emocionarte y, en último extremo, para romperte el corazón", ha añadido en su presentación en Madrid el director teatral Richard Jones, responsable de esta coproducción junto a la Royal Opera House de Londres y la Lyrics Opera de Chicago que ya pasó por la ciudad tras su estreno en 2017. Diana Navarro da vida a Concha Piquer en la obra ‘En tierra extraña' Serán en total 15 las funciones, hasta el 4 de enero, con el aforo al 100% tras la transición de "Parténope" para disfrutar de esta ópera que llena siempre las butacas de cualquier espacio donde se represente. "La Bohème es única", ha subrayado el italiano Nicola Luisotti, quien asumirá la dirección musical, antes de explicar algunas de las razones por las que la obra estrenada en 1986 no ha hecho sino acrecentar su magnetismo: "Habla de nosotros, de la juventud, con una partitura perfecta, cortita, pero con todos los elementos para disfrutar de la vida, del arte y de la música". "Escenas de la vida bohemia" El argumento, obra de Giuseppe Giacosa y Luigi Illica a partir del libro "Escenas de la vida bohemia" de Henri Murger (1822-1861), gira en torno a cuatro jóvenes (un escritor, un pintor, un músico y un filósofo) que sortean las dificultades económicas para entregarse con ilusión al amor y a un París efervescente antes de darse de bruces con la cruda realidad en forma de muerte. For her first solo album, 'Anima Rara', for Opera Rara, for whom she's already recorded Leoncavallo's Zazà and Puccini's Le Willis, Ermonela Jaho celebrates one of her great soprano predecessors, Rosina Storchio. Joined by the Orquestra de la Comunitat Valenciana conducted by Andrea Battistoni, Jaho offers a programme of verismo arias, some familiar but many less so. James Jolly met Ermonela Jaho early this year – face to face – while she was in London for a Wigmore Hall recital, and they talked about Storchio, the new album and both Puccini and Leoncavallo's takes on La bohème.

Staying in the world of opera, Tom is joined by both Roger and the director Annabel Arden to review a new book on Rossini's operas in their time. Tom also hears from its author, Emanuele Senici. Since her death in 1997, it's been fashionable in some quarters to decry the work of Mother Teresa among India's poor. Here fellow Albanian - the opera singer Ermonela Jaho offers an alternative view of the nun who dedicated her life to running homes in Calcutta and later around the world, providing food, shelter and care for the poor and dispossessed. Despite her hardline views on abortion and despite criticism over her dealings with some of the most brutal regimes, Mother Teresa was purely a force for good, argues Ermonela Jaho.
