The Honourable Lady Rita Rae is a lawyer and judge, and the current Rector of the University of Glasgow. Early in her career she was a rare woman in the heavily male-dominated legal world. She went on to work on many high profile criminal cases over five decades as a solicitor, an advocate and subsequently a judge in Scotland's Supreme Court.Rita grew up in Plains, Airdrie, to the east of Glasgow. She was a shy child but earned the nickname ‘The Last Word' from her parents because of her need to argue her case when she felt something wasn't right. She was inspired to become a lawyer by her maternal grandfather, a noted advocate and anti-fascist from Naples. Her parents met in a munitions factory in Italy where her mother was working. Her father was a Scottish bomb disposal expert helping to dismantle munitions after the war. They married and moved to Scotland, but Rita and her brother were not accepted by her Scottish family because of their Catholicism. Rita became a solicitor in 1974, entering a world dominated by men. When told by a senior colleague that women were ‘emotionally unsuitable for court work', she set about proving him wrong. She became a partner in her firm at the age of 27, and was called to the bar in 1982, one of just 13 female advocates in Scotland at the time. She was made a Sheriff in 1997 and a Judge of the Supreme Courts in 2014.In 2021 she was elected Rector of the University of Glasgow, the first female working rector in the university's 570-year history.DISC ONE: Piano Concerto No. 2 in C Minor, Op. 18 - III. SynopsisOn today's date in 1918, the Metropolitan Opera in New York offered the world premiere performance of not one, not two, but three new operas by Giacomo Puccini. The three one-act operas are collectively billed as Il Trittico, or The Triptych. In order of their presentation at the Met, the triptych consisted of Il Tabarro (The Cloak), a rather sordid tale of passion and murder, followed by a sentimental tear-jerker titled Suor Angelica (Sister Angelica, after its Romantic heroine), and, for a comic finale, Gianni Schicchi, titled after the resourceful hero of its comic plot.Musical America reported a warm welcome for the three new Puccini operas, but did find Il Tabarro “in the main, black and brutal.” In that journal's opinion, the hit of the evening was the comic opera, Gianni Schicci. In particular, one brief soprano aria from that opera so pleased the first-night audience that it had to be encored.Over time, this little aria, “O Mio Babbino Caro,” has become one of Puccini's greatest hits and has even cropped up in the soundtracks of movies such as A Room With a View and G.I. Jane.Music Played in Today's ProgramGiacomo Puccini (1858-1924) Gianni Schicchi; Angela Gheorghiu, soprano; London Symphony; Antonio Pappano, cond. EMI 56587

Donald Macleod delves into the operas of Giacomo Puccini Giacomo Puccini was man of the theatre to his fingertips. Born in Lucca in 1858, into a distinguished family of church musicians, Puccini was never destined to follow in his forebears' footsteps. His fate was sealed when as a teenager he walked thirty miles to hear Verdi's Aida. He knew immediately that theatre was his calling and from that point on he wrote almost exclusively for the stage. A perfectionist and an often unreasonable taskmaster, Puccini agonised over each of his operas. Beginning with Manon Lescaut, the opera that launched Puccini internationally, this week Donald Macleod follows the off and the on-stage dramas of La Boheme, Tosca, Madam Butterfly, La fanciulla del West, Suor Angelica, Gianni Schicchi, Il tabarro and the opera he left incomplete at his death in 1924, his final masterpiece, Turandot. The stories on stage are interleaved with events in his personal life, from an early scandal over his affair with a married woman and some very dodgy skulduggery in his business dealings, to the suicide of one of his servants, a tragedy of such proportion, he was plunged in to a deep depression, haunted by the events for the rest of his life. This week, Donald Macleod celebrates a composer whose music expresses every human emotion, there's a host of landmark recordings, including the voices of Jonas Kaufmann, Angela Gheorghiu, Anna Netrebko and Roberto Alagna. We'll hear Mimì's touching calling card from La Boheme, in the classic Victoria de los Angeles version, while Renato Scotto pours all Madam Butterfly's hopes into the heart-breaking Un bel dì. There's the raw pain of Sister Angelica mourning her dead son, and the dark desperation of a jealous husband in Il tabarro. On Wednesday Callas and Gobbi's anguished, sadistic torture scene in Tosca still has the power to shock us as much as it did on its first night in 1900. It's high stakes and nail-biting tension in La fanciulla del West as Minnie trades the life of her outlaw lover on the outcome of a card game. Joan Sutherland's icy Princess Turandot, a magnificent pairing with Luciano Pavarotti's Prince Calaf comes on Friday along with a certain aria made famous by the 1990 world cup, heard here in the hands of another Puccini specialist, Jussi Björling. Music Featured: Manon Lescaut, Act 1: Donna non vidi mai Le Villi, Act 1: Preghiera: Angiol di dio Messa di Gloria (Credo) Crisantemi Manon Lescaut, Act 2: Dispettosetto questo Riccio!; In quelle trine morbide Manon Lescaut, Act 4: Sola, perduta, abbandonata; Fra le tue bracce amore La Bohème, Act 1: Mi chiamano Mimì La Bohème, Act 1: Pensier profondo!; Legna!; Si può Capriccio sinfonico La Bohème, Act 3: Donde lieta uscì; Dunque è proprio finita….Addio, dolce svegliare Tosca, Act 1 (excerpt) Tosca, Act 1: Ah! Tom Service talks to director Richard Eyre, whose celebrated production of Verdi's La Traviata for the Royal Opera House has clocked up 25 years. Soprano Angela Gheorghiu was its first Violetta, and Tom catches up with her, and with one of the production's more recent Violetta's, Ermonela Jaho. And starting at the site where La Traviata was first performed, just south of Piccadilly, Professor Susan Rutherford takes Tom on a tour of the streets of London to learn more about the city’s historical soundscapes as they’re reflected in a new book she co-edited with the scholar Roger Parker – London Voices, 1820–1840. Staying in the world of opera, Tom is joined by both Roger and the director Annabel Arden to review a new book on Rossini's operas in their time. Tom also hears from its author, Emanuele Senici. And we pay tribute to the conductor Mariss Jansons who died this week, with an interview he gave in 2017.

Oscar winning director Ron Howard has made an in-depth look at the life and career of singer Luciano Pavarotti, featuring interviews with his family and other stars such as Placido Domingo and Angela Gheorghiu. Classical music critic Fiona Maddocks reviews. The latest British Attitudes Survey is published today, but how are attitudes reflected and influenced by the culture we consume? Research Director from the National Centre for Social Research, Miranda Philips, and cultural historian Matthew Sweet discuss. The organisers of Port Eliot Festival have released a statement saying that this year’s festival will be the last for the foreseeable future. In an age when the festival scene - literary or musical - seems to be thriving, what has gone wrong for them? Colin Midson, the Creative Director, explains. Wendell Berry is a farmer and activist, and the great chronicler of rural America with over fifty books. His latest, Stand By Me, is a collection of short stories chronicling the lives of the small farmers of Port William, Kentucky, their relationships with each other and the place: the fields and woods, animals and birds, and the soil itself. He talks to Samira Ahmed about how the stories connect and span a century. Presenter: Samira Ahmed Producer: Hannah Robins

She discusses her affinity with the role of Tosca, and why she feels like the "black sheep" of the opera world. Bristol Old Vic is the longest continuously running theatre in the UK, and celebrated its 250th anniversary in 2016, which means it might just be old enough to house a ghost or two. The 1875 premiere of Carmen at the Opera Comique in Paris was met with shocked gasps and raised eyebrows. Both the story and its seductive heroine were shockingly risque for the audience and the critics in attendance. But the genius of Bizet's music was irrepressible, and the opera was a resounding success within a few short months. It remains among the most-performed operas in history.   On this week's episode of He Sang/She Sang, hosts Merrin Lazyan and Julian Fleisher speak with conductor Asher Fisch all about Bizet's masterpiece. We discuss why this opera is loved by opera newbies and connoisseurs alike, and Fisch shares a few of his tips and tricks for keeping an opera on track when it all starts to fall apart. We also speak with mezzo-soprano Clémentine Margaine, who is making her Metropolitan Opera debut as opera's famous femme fatale -- an independent, sexually liberated gypsy woman who trades her life for freedom.   Julian's YouTube pick (from Gilligan's Island): Merrin's YouTube Pick (Maria Callas, 1962): This episode features excerpts from the following album: Bizet: Carmen (EMI Classics, 2003)— Angela Gheorghiu, soprano; Roberto Alagna, tenor; Orchestre National du Capitole de Toulouse conducted by Michel Plasson
