Today's episode of "We the 66" is with none other than "The Godfather" actor Gianni Russo, who played the drunken, abusive son Carlo Rizzi in the iconic film. Russo overcame insurmountable odds to land that role: First, he was a child with with polio, and second he had never had a movie role in his entire life. He went from zero acting experience to starring in what many consider to be the greatest movie of all time. How did he get there? Well, he would tell you it came down to his mob connections. He started working for Frank Costello as a kid and gradually rose the ranks, beating his polio and allegedly sleeping with Marilyn Monroe along the way. After starring in "The Godfather," he became a successful nightclub owner in Vegas. On one fateful eve in 1988, he shot and killed a man in his club. The bad news, Russo says, is that the guy was an underboss for Pablo Escobar. Among many others, Russo recounts the outlandish tale of going down to Colombia to see Pablo Escobar and ask for forgiveness. He says Escobar only granted him forgiveness because he loved the Godfather. We discuss the mafia's involvement with various the most important figures and events of the mid-20th century, from JFK to Ronald Reagan.

Hollywood Godfather: My Life in the Movies and the Mob - Gianni RussoGianni RussoWith a singularly nebulous background, which, by his account, included stints as a Las Vegas nightclub emcee, radio personality and jewelry tycoon, and with comparatively little acting experience, Gianni Russo won the role of Carlo Rizzi in The Godfather (1972) on the basis of his screen test. Since then, Russo has remained busy as an actor, mostly playing assorted "wiseguys" and Mafia types. He appeared again with Marlon Brando in a small role in The Freshman (1990) where Brando parodied his Don Corleone role to good effect.https://amzn.to/3QuGT0fThis show is part of the Spreaker Prime Network, if you are interested in advertising on this podcast, contact us at https://www.spreaker.com/show/1198501/advertisement

On The Kenny & JT Show, actor Gianni Russo returns. Gianni played Carlo Rizzi in “The Godfather”, which was released to theaters 51 years ago this week.
GIANNI RUSSO was born in Manhattan in 1943 and raised in the then close-knit Little Italy, and later Rosebank, Staten Island. After reprising Carlo Rizzi in a brief flashback scene at the end of The Godfather Part II, Russo acted in more than 46 films, including Goodnight, My Love (1972), Lepke (1975, as Albert Anastasia), Laserblast (1978), Chances Are (1989), The Freshman (1990), Side Out (1990), Another You (1991), Super Mario Bros. (1993), Any Given Sunday (1999) and Seabiscuit (2003). Russo claims that he started a fledgling career in organized crime working as an errand boy and mob associate for Frank Costello as an adolescent but later abandoned the dangerous and volatile lifestyle of organized crime. The Staten Island Mafioso Tommy Bilotti was reportedly best man at Russo's wedding. Since the beginning of his acting career, Russo owned a Las Vegas restaurant called Gianni Russo's State Street at 2570 State Street on the Las Vegas Strip (closed in 1988), and reportedly defeated 23 federal criminal indictments on a variety of charges stemming from alleged organized crime associations. Russo is also a singer. In 2004, he released a CD called Reflections that pays homage to Dean Martin and Frank Sinatra. Russo owns a wine brand, Gianni Russo Wines, which debuted in 2009. In 2019, he published his memoir, Hollywood Godfather: My Life in the Movies and the Mob. Hollywood Godfather is Gianni Russo's over-the-top memoir of a real-life mobster-turned-actor who helped make The Godfather a reality, and his story of life on the edge between danger and glamour. Gianni Russo was a handsome 25-year-old mobster with no acting experience when he walked onto the set of The Godfather and entered Hollywood history. He played Carlo Rizzi, the husband of Connie Corleone, who set her brother Sonny―played by James Caan―up for a hit. Russo didn't have to act―he knew the mob inside and out: from his childhood in Little Italy, where Mafia legend Frank Costello took him under his wing, to acting as a messenger for New Orleans mob boss Carlos Marcello during the Kennedy assassination, to having to go on the lam after shooting and killing a member of the Colombian drug cartel in his Vegas club. Along the way, Russo befriended Frank Sinatra, who became his son's godfather, and Marlon Brando, who mentored his career as an actor after trying to get Francis Ford Coppola to fire him from The Godfather. Russo had passionate affairs with Marilyn Monroe, Liza Minelli, and scores of other celebrities. He went on to become a producer and starred in The Godfather: Parts I and II, Seabiscuit, Any Given Sunday and Rush Hour 2, among many other films. Hollywood Godfather is a no-holds-barred account of a life filled with violence, glamour, sex―and fun.

We journey with the internationally celebrated operatic conductor Carlo Rizzi as he revives Il proscritto after 180 years of neglect. Mercadante's opera was first performed in Naples in 1842, and centres on a love triangle set in Scotland during Oliver Cromwell's rule. The original cast were stellar performers, having previously taken lead roles in opera premieres by Verdi and Donizetti. The Neapolitans applauded Act One, but the following Acts were indifferently received, and Il proscritto fell into neglect. Complete with a newly edited score and world class performers, Luke Whitlock journeys with conductor Carlo Rizzi, artistic director of Opera Rara, as he prepares Il proscritto to be heard at the Barbican in London, after nearly 200 years of silence. From collaborating on a new performance edition, heading into the studio to record the opera for commercial release, to journeying to London's Barbican to rehearse and perform the work before a 21st-century audience, this creative process has been a labour of love for Carlo Rizzi and Opera Rara. Gianni Russo With a singularly nebulous background, which, by his account, included stints as a Las Vegas nightclub emcee, radio personality and jewelry tycoon, and with comparatively little acting experience, Gianni Russo won the role of Carlo Rizzi in The Godfather (1972) on the basis of his screen test. Since then, Russo has remained busy as an actor, mostly playing assorted "wiseguys" and Mafia types. He appeared again with Marlon Brando in a small role in The Freshman (1990) where Brando parodied his Don Corleone role to good effect.

I am lucky that so many of the conductors have been a joy to chat with and this week's episode is no different! Carlo Rizzi was very interesting and such a warm and genial person. I discovered that Carlo studies his opera scores differently from symphonic scores, he tells me exactly what it takes to be a successful Music Director of an opera house, and I discover what he might start doing when he reaches his seventies?! Our good friend Gianni Russo returns to The Kenny & JT Show. Of course, he played Carlo Rizzi in “The Godfather”. We pay him a surprise call because we caught the “Godfather” marathon over Father's Day weekend on Paramount TV. Of the many things we discuss, Gianni fills us in on early plans for the 50th anniversary of the original film. Plus, he talks about a one-man show he'll be doing on Broadway based on his autobiography, “Hollywood Gangster”.
Our next guest is someone you're probably familiar. He started life in the polio ward at Belview hosp in NY. Became a courrier for mob boss Frank Costello, had a hot torrid affair with Marilyn Monroe, a close personal friendship with Frank Sinatora, knew the Kennedys and has kept popping in history much like Forest Gump, whenever something major was happening. But you probably know him best as Carlo Rizzi in the Godfather, Gianni Russo is here with us now. Sorry Gianni, I can't even begin to do your story justice in such a short period of time. Gianni is the author of Hollywood Godfather, a multi-year bestseller. We explore his early beginnings in a New York City polio ward, his association with mob chieftain Frank Costello, his involvement in the JFK assassination, his torrid affair with Marilyn Monroe and her untimely suspicious death. Gianni goes into what happed with the RFK assassination and Sirhan Sirhan's, brainwashing. And his run in with Narco Terrorist Pablo Escobar and how he managed to escape certain death at his hands. Truly a fascinating life and one that Gianni says he has no regrets about.

Louis Giovanni "Gianni" Russo is an American actor and singer. He is best known for his role as Carlo Rizzi in The Godfather.
The Godfather, Rush Hour 2 I just read on impactful book called : Hollywood Godfather: My Life in the Movies & The Mob! I read it cover to cover because it was intense & fascinating. Actor Gianni Russo has led an intriguing life. Gianni Russo was a handsome 25-year-old mobster with no acting experience when he walked onto the set of The Godfather and entered Hollywood history. He played Carlo Rizzi, the husband of Connie Corleone, who set her brother Sonny—played by James Caan—up for a hit. Russo didn't have to act—he knew the mob inside and out: from his childhood in Little Italy, where Mafia legend Frank Costello took him under his wing. Along the way, Russo befriended Frank Sinatra, who became his son's godfather, and Marlon Brando, who mentored his career as an actor after trying to get Francis Ford Coppola to fire him from The Godfather. He went on to become a producer and starred in The Godfather: Parts I and II, Seabiscuit, Any Given Sunday and Rush Hour 2, among many other films. Hollywood Godfather is a no-holds-barred account of a life filled with violence, glamour, sex—and fun. Gianni Russo Wines launched nationally in 2009. And he has an expanded product line coming out this year. Born in Manhattan and raised in Little Italy and Staten Island, Russo overcame polio as a child to start his first “business” at the tender age of twelve, selling pens and erasers on the street corners. At eighteen Russo made his first trip to Miami, where he began to dabble in show-business, working in nightclubs and hotspots before deciding to pursue acting and move to Hollywood. His new book: Hollywood Godfather: My Life in the Movies & the Mob is an eye-opening read. All Rights Reserved © 2019 BuildingAbundantSuccess!! Riding Shotgun With Charlie #046 Gianni Russo The Hollywood Godfather! RSWC #046 Gianni Russo https://youtu.be/4-YzugXV96w But did you ask? This is going thru my mind. I couldn't let this chance go by. I asked my son if I should give Gianni Russo a business card and ask if I could drive him around. I put a card in my pocket before we went up to the table. My son and I went to hear Gianni Russo speak in western Massachusetts. Mr Russo is known as the Hollywood Godfather. He played Carlo Rizzi in The Godfather. We were in line waiting to have him autograph his new biography and get a photo with him. I over heard him say that he was doing a signing the next day at a Barnes & Noble. I figured I could get everything ready and film an interview the next day. He said "Yes! I should be free from 4 to 7:30 tomorrow." Gianni Russo has one of the most interesting stories. He used to deliver messages for Frank Costello, an old mafia member. He washed Marilyn Monroe's hair. He learned to act from Marlon Brando and singing from Frank Sinatra. He ran into Lee Harvey Oswald a couple days before Oswald killed JFK. He's got a story about re-enacting a cowboy movie shootout with Elvis at the International Hotel in Las Vegas. You can hear these stories on this episode in this episode of Riding Shotgun With Charlie. There's much more than these things, too. You can read all the stories in his new book, The Hollywood Godfather.

On this week's episode of He Sang/She Sang, hosts Merrin Lazyan and Julian Fleisher are joined by dramaturg Cori Ellison to discuss Verdi's mythical and timeless masterpiece, La Traviata. We also speak with baritone Thomas Hampson, who has been singing the role of Germont for 25 years. Hampson tells us how the complex and beautiful dilemmas that we find in this opera help us to better understand who we really are. Cori's YouTube pick (Maria Callas and Ugo Savarese, 1953): Merrin's YouTube pick (Anna Netrebko and Rolando Villazón, 2005): Julian's YouTube picks (Joni Mitchell): This episode features excerpts from the following albums: Giuseppe Verdi: La Traviata (Deutsche Grammophon, 1992)— Cheryl Studer, soprano; Luciano Pavarotti, tenor; Metropolitan Opera Orchestra conducted by James Levine Verdi: La Traviata (Deutsche Grammophon, 2005)— Thomas Hampson; baritone; Vienna Philharmonic conducted by Carlo Rizzi
Actor and alleged wiseguy Gianni Russo, who played the traitorous Carlo Rizzi in the original Godfather, stops by to talk about people he?s bumped off in real life (two, maybe three that he'll admit to), having sex with Liza Minnelli and Marilyn Monroe and taking acting lessons from Marlon Brando. Also, crime boss John Gotti and Panamanian dictator Manuel Noriega get mentions! (Did you know that Liza and Noriega briefly toured together in the '80s? Okay, we made that part up).
