As we enter into the holiday season, many of us look forward to celebrating long-standing traditions with family and friends, which is no different from us here on the podcast! While not necessarily as long-standing as some of the other classic holiday traditions, after 2.5 years on air, we on this podcast have established our own end-of-year tradition, which is to take a look back at some of our favorite papers or more intriguing manuscripts published in the Journal of Clinical Microbiology over the past year. In COVID-related news, Nature publishes a review of COVID-19 AI tools, emphasizing that most tools are still in development and largely unproven. Inserm selects Expert System’s AI support for its COVID-19 research and its group of over 10,000 researchers. Researchers provide in open-source a large annotated dataset of CT and X-ray images from COVID-19 patients, called the BIMCV COVID-19+. In regular AI news, Microsoft announces that it will not sell its facial recognition technology to police departments in the US until a national law is in place to help govern its use. On that note, a new federal bill in development, the Justice in Policing Act, contains policy guidelines on the use and limitations of facial recognition technology for police. OpenAI releases a commercial product API for accessing its AI models, to include the 175B parameter GPT-3, although other researchers are expressing concern over the lack of accountability on bias. Facebook announces the winner of its Deepfake Challenge, where the winning model achieved at 65% accuracy on a set of 10,000 previously unseen clips. And Boston Dynamics makes its robot dog, Spot, available for sale at $74,500 plus tax. In research, a team at Duke University introduces PULSE, which sharpens blurry images, in essence by exploring the space of plausible high-res images that could result in the blurry image. The report of the week comes from Perry World House, who published the results of a Policy Roundtable on AI hosted last fall. The Stockholm International Peace Research Institute and the International Committee of the Red Cross offer their take on Limits on Autonomy in Weapon Systems, by identifying the practical elements of human control. The review of the week from University of Waterloo provides an overview of text detection and recognition in the wild. MacroPolo provides a snapshot of Global AI Talent, using participants from the 2019 NeurIPS. Spring-Verlag provides yet another free text, from Eiben and Smith, on an Introduction to Evolutionary Computing. And NavyCon 2020 provides brief snapshots on “navies, science fiction, and great power competition” from a host of participants. This week, we speak with Luca Scagliarini with Expert System about a number of low-hanging fruit NLP applications within banking, including those for wealth management. He discusses where the advantage lies in terms of using NLP to decide on making investment decisions for clients. There's a lot of action in this space, and Luca does a great job of summarizing it. He also discusses where chatbots will go and how the customer interaction will change in the years ahead, including how customers will be able to use chatbots to take actions instead of just get simple questions answered.

Spotkanie organizują: Instytut Filologii Germańskiej UŁ i Midland Actors Theatre, UK  we współpracy z Instytutem Filologii Angielskiej UŁ. We would like to invite you to take part in a seminar devoted to the ‘Mantle of the Expert’ System, an innovative, enquiry-based method of teaching and learning, which uses drama and theatre techniques. In the system, learners are asked to think of themselves as people running a fictional ‘enterprise’ of some sort – a museum, publishing house, a polar station, etc. In running their ‘enterprise,’ they take on the responsibilities of an expert team and engage in a range of different tasks to learn new skills. The system has been widely used in schools, especially in the UK, and also in higher education, teacher training, and in business. In the course of  the seminar you will have a chance to learn about the method, and talk to ‘Mantle of the Expert’ practitioners from four different countries (Germany, Turkey, Portugal and the United Kingdom) who have been taking part in an Erasmus + project looking at ways of developing  ‘Mantle of the Expert’ in different contexts.
