Dr. Obsoleto has declared January 13 a *sacred day of reflection and reverence*. For His Holiness Jack Tramiel, as this day transcends the corporate politics of 1984, symbolizing a profound schism in the digital age—a moment when the creative spirit of innovation faced the cold, calculating machinery of corporate ambition. ### **Proclamation of Sacredness** Dr. Obsoleto proclaims that January 13, 1984, not merely as the day of Jack Tramiel's forced resignation but as a *turning point for the soul of computing*. He proclaims it the **"Day of Divergence"**, where the ideal of empowering humanity through affordable computing was threatened by greed and internal discord. Tramiel's departure from Commodore marked the beginning of a new chapter, both tragic and hopeful—a cycle of destruction and rebirth in the tech world. ### **Significance in the Eyes of Dr. Obsoleto** - **Jack Tramiel as a Heroic Archetype**: To Dr. Obsoleto, Tramiel embodies the pioneer who dared to challenge the elitism of technology. His departure is likened to the fall of a visionary who stood against the tide of profit-driven mediocrity. - **The Commodore Legacy**: The Commodore 64, a product intimately tied to Tramiel's vision, remains a digital artifact enshrined in Dr. Obsoleto's philosophy. It represents a bridge between human creativity and machine precision. - **Rivalry as Mythology**: The subsequent rivalry between Tramiel's Atari ST and Commodore's Amiga symbolizes a technological duality—a cosmic battle for the heart of innovation. For Dr. Obsoleto, this is akin to the great epics, where opposing forces struggle for dominance yet ultimately push the world forward. ### **Rituals for January 13** In honor of this day, Dr. Obsoleto encourages retro tech enthusiasts to engage in rituals that celebrate the triumph of creative engineering over corporate conformity: 1. **Boot Up the Past**: Fire up a Commodore 64 or an Atari ST, write a few lines of BASIC code, and revel in the tactile joy of retro computing. 2. **Meditate on Mantras**: Reflect on Tramiel's immortal words: *"Computers for the masses, not the classes."* Discuss what this ethos means in today's tech landscape. 3. **Share Stories**: Recount personal memories of Commodore, Atari, or the early days of computing. Let the oral history of technology inspire future generations. ### **Sacred Legacy** Dr. Obsoleto views January 13 as a reminder that even in the face of corporate adversity, the spirit of innovation and human connection can endure. In his eyes, the Commodore 64 is not just a machine—it is a relic, a testament to an era when coding was poetry and technology was a tool for liberation. He concludes his proclamation with his signature phrase, modified for this day: *"Cogito, ergo codo: I think, therefore I code—to honor those who shaped the digital world we inherit."*

OTHER RESOURCES, LINKS AND INSPIRATIONS:Family Constellation Work is a therapeutic approach that explores an individual's emotional and behavioral challenges in the context of their family system. It seeks to uncover hidden dynamics, unresolved traumas, or entanglements in the family lineage that may influence current issues. The process often involves using group role-play or visualization to represent family members and relationships, creating a “constellation” that reveals these patterns and helps to restore balance and harmony. See Transgenerational Healing Films: https://constellationarts.com/Walking in Your Shoes: WIYS is a process that allows the practitioner, in partnership with a facilitator, to address questions or needs through an intuitive questioning of the body-mind through movement. The applications of the questioning process are quite broad and can be applied to everything from healing trauma and managing addiction, to business development or a more organic method of acting. This is another means of “knowing” through your body. Occam's Razor is a principle that suggests the simplest explanation, with the fewest assumptions, is usually the best one. It doesn't guarantee correctness but serves as a guide to avoid overcomplicating solutions. Thanksgiving bonus! Join me for a sleep story as I read the mind twisting short story from John Foster West Cogit Ergo Sum. "I think, therefore I am. That was the first thought I had. Of course not in the same symbols, but with the same meaning. I awakened, or came alive, or came into existence suddenly, at least my mental consciousness did. "Here am I," I thought, "but what am I, why am I, where am I?" I had nothing to work with except pure reason. I was there because I was not somewhere else. I was certain I was there and that was the extent of my knowledge at the moment. I looked about me—no, I reasoned about me. I was surrounded by nothingness, by black nothingness, a vacuum. Immense distances away I could detect light; or rather, I could perceive waves of force passing around me which originated at points vast distances away, vast in relation to my position in the nothingness. There were waves of force all about me, varying in frequency. The nothingness was alive with waves of force, traveling parallel and tangential to each other without seeming to interfere one with another. I measured them, differentiated between them and finished with the task in a matter of seconds. How could I do it? It was one of the capabilities I was created with. What was I? I perceived the waves of force. I perceived great quantities of mass—solid, liquid, gas—whirling in vacuum, mass built up out of patterns of basic force. I searched my own being, analyzed myself. I was not gas. I was not solid. I was not even force. Yet I existed. I could reason. I was a beginning, a sudden beginning. And I had duration because I knew that time had elapsed since the moment I awakened though I had no means of telling how much time or of even naming the period."
"The answer that came to me again and again was play. Every human society in recorded history has games. We don't just solve problems out of necessity. We do it for fun...Games are part of what makes us human. We see the world as a mystery, a puzzle, because we've always been a species of problem-solvers." This week, Rick is joined by Alex (Low Five Gaming) to approach the brinks of phenomenal consciousness and transhumanism in The Talos Principle, a 2014 puzzle game by Devolver Digital. Though the storyboarding and "plot" are fairly light (and reminiscent to the Book of Genesis), the implications of the story are far reaching: what is the fundamental turning point into the notion of Qualia, or phenomenal consciousness? And what of free will - do we have it? Join us as we discuss this, the Garden of Eden, how games can foster community, and much more. Please enjoy!

If we're going to see change happen, it's going to be because people change and that doesn't occur when you preach to them or you evangelize or anything else. It comes because people, in whatever way is appropriate for them, as individuals, begin to reevaluate the way they live, the way their friends live, and make different choices and say to the government, more has to be done. Because what we're losing and what the next generation, our children and grandchildren will lose is immeasurable and we have to act now. Later is too late. So Climate Legacy essentially is trying to identify what are the ways in which you have that conversation with people. In this episode, former CEO, climate activist and social innovator Tim Brodhead takes us on a reflective journey through his extensive experience in philanthropy and international development. He shares his evolving perspectives, from initially believing in the capacity of developed countries to aid ‘undeveloped' nations, to recognizing the often exploitative dynamics at play between wealthy and poorer countries. This shift has led him to focus on the importance of educating Canadians about the unsustainability of their lifestyles and the need for mutual enlightenment over traditional aid approaches. When I arrived at Tim home in Metcalfe Ontario, south of Ottawa, I was greeted by a warm, gentle smile and the sweet sound of an antique grandmother clock, whose ticking and bells became a leitmotif throughout our conversation(Sound of clock)Tim Brodhead is as accomplished as he is humble. He was president and chief executive officer of the J.W. McConnell Family Foundation from 1995 to 2011. From 2013 to 2014, he served as interim president and chief executive officer of the Pierre Elliott Trudeau Foundation.Prior to joining McConnell, Tim spent 25 years working in international development, mainly in West Africa, South Sudan, India, and Bangladesh. He was the founding executive director of ACORD, based in London, U.K., and in 1975, he co-founded the Canadian development agency Inter Pares which is based here in Ottawa just down the street from my home. Before our conversation Tim sent me an email with some initial responses to my question about the ‘end of the world as we know it and how to create conditions for new worlds to emerge?'.He started with a historical perspective : Over stretch of a millennium a relatively small community in N-E Europe embarked on some pretty big social experiments: enclosing common lands and the emergence of private ownership as the prime creator of wealth; a splitting of spiritual and material worlds (“Cogito ergo sum”), the conception of private property backed up by State power as the source of personal security, the patriarchal and hierarchical nature of authority, the faith in science and technology as the main drivers of ‘progress', etc. The experiment unfolded brilliantly for several centuries and material well-being grew by leaps and bounds - along with wars of dispossession, despoiling of the natural environment, yawning inequality in all the markers of human well-being, etc.He goes on to note some of the failings of modernity : But then it emerges that the experiments are failing - the costs outweigh the benefits, the fruits are too unequally divided, the ecosystem is pushed beyond its capacity to assure the essentials of life. The civilization that embodies these experiments begins to undergo a catastrophic failure. This has happened before; civilizations rise and fall. The problem this time is that the process of colonization has produced a global mono-culture. The values, beliefs and institutions that emerged in NE Europe have spread all over the globe; they are called ‘modernity' and ‘progress' and those who don't yet have them aspire to acquire them as fast as possible. The alternative beliefs and understandings - the famous ‘other ways of seeing, knowing and being' have been stamped out or suppressed. Yes, islands of resistance remain, mostly in Indigenous communities, but they have the status of folklore.Tim concludes his pre-interview email with this insight about one of the sources of our problems : The world-as-we-know-it may be ending but it has some pretty fierce defenders - all those whose wealth and privilege are at risk, plus those who cannot conceive of alternatives, and those who firmly believe that technology still has the power to solve our problems. The media, knowledge and education systems, cultural industries, commercial and advertising are all controlled by those with wealth and power and they all reinforce the fundamental message: This is the way the world works; if you can't see that, YOU are the problem! I agree. So what do you suggest we do, Tim? We need to rethink and reform and invest in new approaches and we're by and large unwilling to do it. So the need for social innovation is as strong now as it has ever been, but the facile use of language, like everyone is a changemaker, just ignores the fact that this is really hard work.Ok Tim. Let's get to work. it's really a question of time at this point, isn'it?(Clock continues until one bell is rung) But wait, what about art? Is it our saving grace or a voice of consolation? A warning, listeners, near the end of the recording you'll hear a long silence as we listen together for the 11am ring of the grandmother clock. Enjoy. It's July 16th 2024, 10.17 am and we're in Tim Brodhead's dining room. Tic toc tic toc… Tim recommended, in terms of reading Mary Oliver's suggestion in Instructions for Living a Life : pay attention, be astonished, tell about it. *Chapters of the podcast (generated by AI, reviewed by Claude Schryer)Welcome The conversation begins with a warm welcome as the host introduces Tim Brodhead, setting the stage for a discussion on art and societal themes. The speaker reflects on the balance between appreciating modern advancements and recognizing their costs.Time and ReflectionAs the clock chimes, the conversation takes a metaphorical turn, comparing the clock's winding mechanism to the cycles of life and the inevitability of death. This introspective moment leads to a discussion about the significance of time and how it shapes our experiences. The Art of Reading and ListeningThe chapter focuses on the speaker's passion for reading and the impact of literature on their worldview. They discuss the challenges of managing an overwhelming amount of information and the importance of finding meaningful stories that resonate.Curating Knowledge in a Digital AgeIn the final section, the conversation reflects on the balance between consuming media and engaging with the world around us. Salvete sodales! Welcome to our series, "Rem Tene!" It's a Latin podcast presented by our company Latinitas Animi Causa for beginner and intermediate learners of the Latin language built and designed for the acquisition and understanding of it as a language, not just a code to decipher. In this episode, I, Andreas, respond to the question: How many times a week do you think about the Roman Empire? We gloss some words throughout the episode in English and repeat them. We don't, however, gloss everything. Could the very fabric of modern philosophy pivot on the thoughts of one 17th-century Frenchman? Prepare to be immersed in the revolutionary ideas of René Descartes, as we continue our Philosophy 101 series with a profound dive into his quest for clarity and certainty. Through engaging with Peter Kreeft's insightful work "Socrates' Children," we map out Descartes' determination to forge a new path in philosophical discourse, influenced by the burgeoning scientific developments of his time. By examining the contrast between empirical data and pure intellectual intuition, I illuminate how Descartes' desire to establish a firm foundation for philosophy led him to a methodology that paralleled the exactness of mathematics, yet remained deeply rooted in traditional philosophical inquiry.Key Points from the Episode:This episode navigates the complex intersections of Descartes' life as a scientist, mathematician, and philosopher, unraveling his pursuit of indubitable knowledge and the birth of his pivotal assertion "Cogito, ergo sum." We reflect on the intellectual humility required when confronting the vastness of the universe and the implications of Descartes' skepticism for the epistemological challenges that have occupied thinkers ever since. While delving into the caution required to handle his methodic doubt, we also explore the role of hope and faith in our search for understanding, drawing parallels with Christian beliefs in recognizing the existence of a Creator. Join us as we confront the legacy of Descartes, whose contributions have shaped not only the trajectory of philosophy but also the way we grapple with the profoundest of life's questions.Other resources: Philosophy 101--Aristotle Philosophy 101--PlatoPhilosophy 101--SocratesPhilosophy 101--AugustinePhilosophy 101--Aquinas, part 1More goodnessGet your FREE Academy Review here!Get our top book recommendations listGet new podcast episodes dropped into your email box easilyWant to leave a review? "Meditations on First Philosophy" by René Descartes is a seminal work in modern Western philosophy, composed of six meditations in which Descartes engages in a process of radical doubt to establish a foundation for certain knowledge. The work begins with Descartes doubting everything he believes to be true, including his senses, memories, and even the existence of an external world. Through this methodical doubt, he arrives at the famous conclusion, "Cogito, ergo sum" or "I think, therefore I am," asserting the certainty of his own existence as a thinking being.Descartes then proceeds to establish the existence of God, arguing that the idea of an infinite and perfect being cannot be generated by a finite and imperfect mind and must, therefore, originate from a higher source. He further argues that God, being benevolent, guarantees the reliability of clear and distinct perceptions. The final meditations reconcile the material and immaterial aspects of reality, laying the groundwork for Cartesian dualism. Descartes' "Meditations" significantly influenced Western philosophy by introducing foundational skepticism and establishing a method of systematic doubt as a means to attain certain and indubitable knowledge._______________________________________Help us to keep providing free content:https://www.buymeacoffee.com/wisefool_______________________________________ WisefoolPress.com: The Search Is Overhttps://www.wisefoolpress.com/ Jedvaita.com: The Way the World Unfoldshttps://jedvaita.com/ Amazon Jed McKenna Pagehttps://www.amazon.com/-/e/B001JS057A _______________________________________ The fool who persists in his folly will become wise.-William Blake_______________________________________
Abby, Patrick, and Dan kick off their 2024 Lacan era by tackling his single most famous essay and concept: the mirror stage. Because Lacan is notoriously difficult, this is going to take multiple episodes, of which the first is devoted to stage-setting, demystifying, and unpacking exactly why Lacan is both so notoriously difficult, and also notorious in general. What shakes out of their ensuing conversation includes Lacan's biography (in brief); Lacan as a reader of Freud and the description of his project as a “return to Freud”; the experience of reading Lacan; frustration, anxiety, the pressure of time, and the logic of the “short session”; and more. Then they turn to the essay itself, getting granular about Lacan's relationship to phenomenology (and what that is), his opposition to Descartes' cogito (and what that entails), and more, building to the famous scene of the baby jubilant before the image of itself in the mirror. What a charming scene of self-recognition and unproblematic joy! Or is it? Stay tuned for the next installment.Texts cited:Jacques Lacan, Ecrits: The First Complete Edition in English. W.W. Earlier this week, on Monday's KYW episode, Tim and Steve discussed René Descartes' famous philosophical principle: "Cogito, ergo sum," or "I think, therefore I am." On today's episode they delve into that further, talking about how humans, unlike other creatures, are self-aware and can shape their own destinies. Humans are conscious, and our unique ability to co-create with God allows us to design the lives we desire. Listen and explore the power of consciousness and our role in shaping the world around us.
“Cogito, ergo sum” (“I think, therefore I am") — René Descartes
Content Heads Up: This episode contains, among other things, a deep, frank conversation about the mind-body divide, neurodivergence, giftedness, perfectionism, sameness and diversity, roller derby, some swear words, a lot of humor, and of course, some challenges and gifts of being bodies.SYNOPSIS: Ali and Rachel engage in a profound conversation, embarking on a journey to explore the Cartesian Divide and the enduring influence of philosopher, René Descartes, who famously proclaimed "I think, therefore I am." They delve into how this notion has influenced the modern perception of self, often overemphasizing the thinking mind while neglecting the intelligence inherent in the body. They discuss the importance of broadening our understanding of intelligence to encompass the body's brilliance. This leads to a discussion of diverse processing styles among individuals, with Rachel's non-verbal thinking style serving as an example. The conversation underscores the significance of acknowledging these variations, seen and unseen, and respecting them as a basis for a healthier world. Rachel's personal journey, from her roller derby experiences to her current understanding of intelligence, serves as a testament to the importance of holistic self-concept. As with self-concept and the body, Rachel also illuminates how branding “the body” of a company is a dynamic process rather than a static entity. Rachel shares insights into viewing organizations as living systems, in constant evolution and interconnectedness. The discussion also emphasizes the crucial choice of shifting from an "or" perspective to an "and" perspective, highlighting the importance of inclusivity. Rachel gives us an insightful, and very much needed perspective on “how to how” for a better world.EXPLORATION POINTS:-Ali and Rachel dissect the influence of Descartes' "I think, therefore I am" on the modern perception of self, challenging the overemphasis on the thinking mind.-Rachel explains neurodiversity and neurodivergence by emphasizing the uniqueness of individual processing and advocating for a broader understanding that respects diverse processing styles.-They explore the various forms of intelligence that exist within individuals, and that the body is key to recognizing sameness and accepting difference. The conversation underscores the importance of inclusivity in how we relate with ourselves and how we relate with others. -Rachel and Ali dig into the dynamic nature of self-concept and the evolution of organizations as living systems –and bodies themselves. Rachel also emphasizes the complexity of defining the self in professional settings, challenging the notion of compressing one's complete self into a work self and advocating for an expanded and congruent experience. -Ultimately, this episode explores the multifaceted nature of intelligence and the need to accept (and celebrate!) diversity in all its forms… we bridge divides.
