He joined Google in 2005 as one of the earliest European employees working on the Google Ad Platform and Google Analytics. After Google, he founded Qubit, a leading SaaS company in the e-commerce space, providing AI-personalised shopping recommendations to over one billion users per month across more than 300 leading brands. He sold Qubit to Coveo Solutions in 2021 and remains a strategic advisor at Coveo. In this episode, Graham charts the development of the latest iteration of the internet, which he's written about in his book called Web3: the end of business as usual. He also unpacks the value of user-centric design for organisations and teams, rather than just products.
Retailers are feeling the weight of competition now more than ever. Combine that with tight margins, continued supply chain, inflation and labor challenges, and it becomes abundantly clear that brands and retailers are in a race to remain relevant. But what does relevancy actually mean to today's consumers, and does the idea of relevancy vary depending on who you ask and what they're buying? And what about where they're buying from? To dive into these questions and more, I spoke with Brian McGlynn, general manager of commerce at Coveo, who came armed with the answers I was seeking. For listeners who don't already know about Coveo, it's an AI-powered software-as-a-service search engine that recently announced the launch of its Merchandising Hub, a new product developed as a result of the company's acquisition of Qubit, a leader in AI powered merchandising. They're doing some really cool stuff in the omni space so be sure to check them out and say hello at Booth 209 if you are attending NRF 2023 - you might even get a chance to try out one of their Maple Manhattans (I know I will be). About the guest: Having spent more than 20 years in the high-tech industry, Brian McGlynn's experience spans start-ups and Fortune 100 companies, including HP and IBM. He's held roles in sales, consulting, and general management. More recently as General Manager of Intershop's North American business, Brian spearheaded the company's growth into new markets with B2C and B2B commerce offerings. In his current role at Coveo, Brian brings a solid e-commerce expertise with a focus on search, content management, and customer analytics. Brian holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Telecommunications Engineering from the Rochester Institute of Technology and an MBA from Concordia University. Outside of work, Brian's voice can be heard on radio stations across New York State. Hosted and produced by Gabriella Bock, Head of Content & Production at RETHINK Retail. In this episode of the Futurum Tech Webcast, I'm joined by Brian McGlynn, General Manager of Commerce Solutions at Coveo to talk about one of my favorite topics: customer experience. And in this instance, we're discussing customer experience in the ecommerce ecosystem. Before we get started, some background. We've witnessed some major shifts in the last few years as it relates to customer experience. Customers are more savvy than ever before, they're more demanding than ever before, they are more impatient than ever before, and they have more options than ever before. The onus on brands is to understand and embrace this shift, and to position themselves to deliver top-notch, personalized, customer experiences at all times — and across all channels. Of course, this is often easier said than done, and that's especially true when it comes to search functionality in ecommerce situations. So, what can brands do to ensure they are serving up the optimum digital experience, especially when it comes to search functions? That's exactly what Brian and I talked about. Here are just a few of the things we covered: The current state of the customer experience when it comes to ecommerce The challenges organizations are facing when it comes to digital experiences How important search and product discovery for ecommerce are The different ways AI can improve the ecommerce ops and have adramatic impact on customer satisfaction How Coveo is helping customers capitalize on technology in order to improvetheir search functionality And if you'd like more information on Coveo, visit their SAP store page here. You can also find Brian on LinkedIn here, and he's more than happy to connect and answer any questions you might have on how improving search functionality for your ecommerce operations can be a game-changer.

Summary Using machine learning in production requires a sophisticated set of cooperating technologies. A majority of resources that are available for understanding how to design and operate these platforms are focused on either simple examples that don’t scale, or over-engineered technologies designed for the massive scale of big tech companies. In this episode Jacopo Tagliabue shares his vision for "ML at reasonable scale" and how you can adopt these patterns for building your own platforms. Announcements Hello and welcome to the Machine Learning Podcast, the podcast about machine learning and how to bring it from idea to delivery. Do you wish you could use artificial intelligence to drive your business the way Big Tech does, but don’t have a money printer? Graft is a cloud-native platform that aims to make the AI of the 1% accessible to the 99%. Wield the most advanced techniques for unlocking the value of data, including text, images, video, audio, and graphs. No machine learning skills required, no team to hire, and no infrastructure to build or maintain. For more information on Graft or to schedule a demo, visit themachinelearningpodcast.com/graft today and tell them Tobias sent you. Your host is Tobias Macey and today I’m interviewing Jacopo Tagliabue about building "reasonable scale" ML systems Interview Introduction How did you get involved in machine learning? How would you describe the current state of the ecosystem for ML practitioners? (e.g. tool selection, availability of information/tutorials, etc.) What are some of the notable changes that you have seen over the past 2 – 5 years? How have the evolutions in the data engineering space been reflected in/influenced the way that ML is being done? What are the challenges/points of friction that ML practitioners have to contend with when trying to get a model into production that isn’t just a toy? You wrote a set of tutorials and accompanying code about performing ML at "reasonable scale". What are you aiming to represent with that phrasing? There is a paradox of choice for any newcomer to ML. What are some of the key capabilities that practitioners should use in their decision rubric when designing a "reasonable scale" system? What are some of the common bottlenecks that crop up when moving from an initial test implementation to a scalable deployment that is serving customer traffic? How much of an impact does the type of ML problem being addressed have on the deployment and scalability elements of the system design? (e.g. NLP vs. computer vision vs. recommender system, etc.) What are some of the misleading pieces of advice that you have seen from "big tech" tutorials about how to do ML that are unnecessary when running at smaller scales? You also spend some time discussing the benefits of a "NoOps" approach to ML deployment. At what point do operations/infrastructure engineers need to get involved? What are the operational aspects of ML applications that infrastructure engineers working in product teams might be unprepared for? What are the most interesting, innovative, or unexpected system designs that you have seen for moderate scale MLOps? What are the most interesting, unexpected, or challenging lessons that you have learned while working on ML system design and implementation? What are the aspects of ML systems design that you are paying attention to in the current ecosystem? What advice do you have for additional references or research that ML practitioners would benefit from when designing their own production systems? In episode number seven, we meet Jacopo Tagliabue and discuss behavioral testing for recommender systems and experiences from ecommerce. Before Jacopo became the director of artificial intelligence at Coveo, he had founded tooso, which was later acquired by Coveo. Jacopo holds a PhD in cognitive intelligence and made many contributions to conferences like SIGIR, WWW, or RecSys. In addition, he serves as adjunct professor at NYU.In this episode we introduce behavioral testing for recommender systems and the corresponding framework RecList that was created by Jacopo and his co-authors. Behavioral testing goes beyond pure retrieval accuracy metrics and tries to uncover unintended behavior of recommender models. RecList is an adaption of CheckList that applies behavioral testing to NLP and which was proposed by Microsoft some time ago. RecList comes with an open-source framework with ready set datasets for different recommender use-cases like similar, sequence-based and complementary item recommendations. Furthermore, it offers some sample tests to make it easier for newcomers to get started with behavioral testing. We also briefly touch on the upcoming CIKM data challenge that is going to focus on the evaluation of recommender systems. In the end of this episode Jacopo also shares his insights from years of building and using diverse ML Ops tools and talk about what he refers to as the "post-modern stack".Enjoy this enriching episode of RECSPERTS - Recommender Systems Experts.Links from the Episode: Jacopo Tagliabue on LinkedIn GitHub: RecList CIKM RecEval Analyticup 2022 (sign up!) MLOps Coffee Sessions #95 with Ciro Greco, MLOps as Tool to Shape Team and Culture. // Abstract Good MLOps practices are a way to operationalize a more “vertical” practice and blur the boundaries between different stages of “production-ready”. Sometimes you have this idea that production-ready means global availability but with ML products that need to be constantly tested against real-world data, we believe production-ready should be a continuum and that the key person that drives that needs to be the data scientist or the ML engineer. // Bio Ciro Greco, VP of AI at Coveo. Unlike many of his finance leader peers, Jean Lavigueur has little difficulty in identifying where and when his path to the CFO office began. It was back in the early to mid-1990s, he recalls, when—after he had spent nearly 10 years with PwC—a charismatic entrepreneur client named Louis Têtu convinced him to join his supply chain start-up. Although this company was soon thereafter sold to Baan, Têtu and Lavigueur found that they had unmistakable chemistry—or at least this is what we must assume, given that 25 years later, the two Canadian entrepreneurs have built not one but two other successful companies together. The first was Teleo, a talent management company that the two men cofounded in 1999 and took public in 2007 (In 2012, Teleo was sold to Oracle for $1.9 billion). Their present firm is AI-powered ecommerce company Coveo, which recently raised $215 million when it went public on the Toronto stock exchange. Today, as a seasoned CFO, Lavigueur implores his CFO peers to widen their lenses. “With every crisis, there is an opportunity,” he observes, before recounting how nearly a decade ago, Microsoft—one of Coveo's largest development partners—acquired his firm's largest rival, precipitating a nail-biting challenge that led Coveo to make a strategic pivot. “We used the crisis to accelerate toward the cloud,” explains Lavigueur, who adds that the company fueled its new cloud ambitions in part by forging a stronger relationship with Microsoft rival Salesforce, whose offerings—unlike those of Microsoft—were entirely cloud-based. Advises Lavigueur: “When you see a crisis, use it to get better.” –Jack Sweeney

MLOps Coffee Sessions #66 with Jacopo Tagliabue, Machine Learning at Reasonable Scale. // Abstract We believe that immature data pipelines are preventing a large portion of industry practitioners from leveraging the latest research on ML: truth is, outside of Big Tech and advanced startups, ML systems are still far from producing the promised ROI. The good news is that times are changing: thanks to a growing ecosystem of tools and shared best practices, even small teams can be incredibly productive at a “reasonable scale”. Based on our experience as founders and researchers, we present our philosophy for modern, no-nonsense data pipelines, highlighting the advantages of a "PaaS-like" approach. // Bio Educated in several acronyms across the globe (UNISR, SFI, MIT), Jacopo Tagliabue was co-founder and CTO of Tooso, an A.I. company in San Francisco acquired by Coveo in 2019. Jacopo is currently the Director of AI at Coveo, shipping models to hundreds of customers and millions of users. When not busy building products, he is exploring topics at the intersection of language, reasoning, and learning: his research and industry work is often featured in the general press and premier A.I. venues. In previous lives, he managed to get a Ph.D., do sciency things for a pro basketball team, and simulate a pre-Columbian civilization. // Relevant Links Bigger boat repo: https://github.com/jacopotagliabue/you-dont-need-a-bigger-boat TDS series: https://towardsdatascience.com/tagged/mlops-without-much-ops (ep 3 and a NEW open-source contribution on data ingestion coming up) Open datasets for e-commerce and MLops experiments: https://github.com/coveooss/SIGIR-ecom-data-challenge --------------- ✌️Connect With Us ✌️ ------------- Join our slack community: https://go.mlops.community/slack Follow us on Twitter: @mlopscommunity Sign up for the next meetup: https://go.mlops.community/register Catch all episodes, Feature Store, Machine Learning Monitoring and Blogs: https://mlops.community/ Connect with Demetrios on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/dpbrinkm/ Connect with Vishnu on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/vrachakonda/ Connect with Jacopo on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/jacopotagliabue/

Between stimulus and response there is a space. In that space is our power to choose our response. In our response lies our growth and our freedom. - Viktor Frankl This is one of the most powerful quotes around today and if you consider it carefully and apply it to your life, you will see dramatic changes. This is what my guest today, Candice Faktor did. Candice has a long history of working in the tech industry in a variety of executive positions. Candice is someone who I admire deeply for many reasons, but especially for her leadership style. She exudes calmness and confidence and is a balance of both masculine and feminine energies. During this episode she vulnerably shares with me what the costs (and benefits) of being so achievement oriented and living in scarcity are. And what ultimately caused her to change her ways of leading and her approach to life. One of the keys to her change with re-examining space and how that quote above was the instigator and inspiration for her. This episode has so much wisdom in it, no matter where you are in life, you will benefit from it. I've listened to the episode multiple times already and every time I get something new! Enjoy this one and be sure to share with someone who also needs to hear it! During this episode we discuss: How to listen to your inner feminine voice and ‘alpha' sides Growing up with an immigrant background in a male dominated industry What is the cost of being achievement oriented and playing into society's norms? What happens if the #1 person you have to take care of is yourself? So that you can be in service of others Would you take a mid-life gap year? The most vulnerable answer Candice gave to a question that changed the trajectory of her life Living in scarcity and striving for more can lead to certain success but what about diminishing returns? We all have our own journeys, including traumas. Those can lead to results until a certain point… our job may be to heal from those Reimagining ‘space' The benefits of transcending your emotions Candice's Bio: Hi! I am the cofounder of Disco. Our mission is to help creators make a sustainable living teaching what they love. We believe the future is learning live together.
Coveo uses AI and intelligent search and recommendation technologies to personalize millions of digital experiences for customers, partners, dealers, and employees. However, Coveo for Commerce is transforming the way businesses sell online and its AI-powered solution is helping to deliver relevant buying experiences that is driving business growth. But I wanted to find out more about this experience intelligence platform. Coveo for Commerce is enhancing product and content discoverability, detects buyer intent, and automatically merchandizes personalized product recommendations that make business sense. “The experience economy is built on data and AI. Tech-first companies have trained people to expect personalized, relevant, and unified experiences. With Coveo, every business can be an intelligent experience leader.” Coveo Chairman and CEO Louis Tetu. However, personalization alone is not enough; businesses also want to increase the profitability of their customer lifetime journeys. In today's episode, I explore how this experience intelligence platform stitches together content and data, learning from every interaction, to tailor every experience using AI. I learn how Coveo for Commerce connects and unifies product catalogs and product-related content to provide shoppers with comprehensive, relevant information in their shopping experience. We also discuss how structured product catalog data can blend with unstructured content. Mark Floisand is Chief Marketing Officer at Coveo joins me on Tech Talks Daily to talk about all this and more. He has over 20 years of marketing, sales and general management experience in the technology industry, spanning blue chip and start-up companies across three continents, including Apple, Adobe, BusinessObjects, SAP, Total Defense, Untangle and WeVideo. Mark was most recently with Sitecore, a Coveo technology partner, where he led product marketing. Mark holds a Bachelor of Commerce degree from the University of the Witwatersrand, South Africa; and an MBA from the University of Durham in the UK.
The Get: Finding And Keeping The Best Marketing Leaders in B2B SaaS
Mike and Erica discuss the challenges and opportunities of building marketing teams at a hyper-growth company. Expanding from 65 to 500 people. Onboarding 50 new hires per quarter. Growing 50% YoY, A marketing team that's getting bigger and stronger each quarter – if that's not hypergrowth, then we don't know what is! We talk about how the role of a marketing leader grows and changes as the company grows, and some of the challenges with hiring ahead of plan, based on Mike's experiences at Coveo. We also talk about the need to balance ‘scrappy' and ‘scale' in a hyper-growth environment. For example, would you as a CEO hire a CMO who needed to ‘stoop' into the role (someone coming from a much larger firm that has already done a big revenue climb) or ‘stretch' into the role (someone who has not yet been the top marketer, or who comes from a smaller firm)? Mike offers 3 tips for anyone taking on a marketing leadership role in a hyper growth company: - Bring data to every marketing conversation, including data from existing marketing programs and data from across the company - to make themselves more credible to the leadership team. - Build a culture where people expect change. Embrace change, but also build a strong vision for what you are trying to achieve as a marketing team, along with a strong set of shared values. - "Hire people that scare you a little.” In our organizational design segment, Erica and Mike speak about specific org structure changes that Mike helped make to marketing at Coveo. He shares two - about centralizing shared services between customer acquisition and product marketing; as well as building collaborative crews who don't have a hierarchical responsibility to each other but work together on various time-bound or ongoing business initiatives. Finally, our last segment takes on trends that will impact marketing leadership in B2B SaaS companies for 2020. Here are some that stood out: 1. CRO titles and how that's going to impact the marketing org structure in high growth enterprises 2. Marketers mastering data for real revenue outcomes 3. More intentional role design for marketing leaders 4. Putting content marketing on a diet 5. The need for B2B SaaS marketing leaders to talk PE What do you think? What trends will impact the role of the B2B SaaS CMO in 2020 and beyond?

Ari Hoffman, Director of Customer Advocacy at Coveo, speaks at SparrowCast on the difference between customer marketing and advocacy.
Skilljar Connect 2018 In this episode of CELab, Adam shares his experiences from Skilljar Connect, hosted in Seattle on November 14 and 15, 2018. Adam shares his experiences in talking on a panel hosted by Maria Manning Chapman from TSIA focused on Content effectiveness and how to make training stick! Join us for this recap and tons of myths and misconceptions about content! This week on CELab, we recap another Customer Education conference: Skilljar Connect! Adam attended and spoke on a panel at the conference, and it was a great day spent with other Customer Educators. Let's face it: Aside from CEdMA (which we recapped on a previous episode) here aren’t many conferences devoted to customer education. While big conferences like DevLearn and ATD TechKnowledge are helpful for instructional designers and technologists, they aren’t often customer education oriented. I'd highly recommend them to anyone looking to learn more about instructional design, content development, and learning technology. But as a customer education professional, you often must make the leap away from the context of traditional L&D, asking yourself, "How does this apply to customer education?" So similar to how Gainsight Pulse is focused on the discipline of Customer Success, Skilljar Connect was a forum for Skilljar customers to discuss the discipline of Customer Education and share our programs. There were a lot of great peer companies at the conference -- tech companies like Zendesk, MapR, Zuora, Avalara, Looker, Alfresco, Coveo, Zenefits, Autodesk, Procore -- and of course Checkr! Overall the representation included a lot of innovative brands -- and some forward-thinking enterprises. These are usually the companies who are trying to think about things differently. They’re not pivoting from having Education Services teams. Many started in the cloud. This made Skilljar Connect a different forum than those geared more towards Education Services teams. Because of the companies represented, Adam noticed some different trends than at other conferences. Most companies here didn’t have certification programs, and the ones that did were more likely to use them as marketing or industry plays. Most companies weren’t charging for training, which is much more common for younger or smaller companies who never built up education P&Ls. A word from the VCs To open up the conference, Rajeev Batra and Doug Pepper, two of Skilljar’s investors, gave the VC’s perspective on customer education. Doug was an investor in Marketo and compared Customer Education to where marketing automation was years ago. Marketing teams didn't have a seat at the table. They didn't have data to make their arguments. They hadn't gone digital. Because of digital marketing companies and practices, smart companies were able to think differently about their marketing functions. Today, Customer Education has an opportunity to do the same.Doug and Rajeev also talked about “replacement markets.” In their view, the old category of "Learning Management System," has fragmented into many new categories. Most relevant to us, one new category is the Customer Learning Platform.Doug mentioned that he likes to invest along the customer journey. He started by investing in sales enablement and marketing automation platforms, then tools for Customer Success reporting. But he notices a gap between the to
Renegade Thinkers Unite: #2 Podcast for CMOs & B2B Marketers
One of the most sought-after goals in current B2B marketing is being able to deliver personalized content to clients in a sales cycle. This elusive skill is one of the foundations of Coveo, a company using machine-based intelligence to help clients deliver personalized content to their markets. On this episode of Renegade Thinkers Unite, Drew talks with Coveo’s CMO, Mark Floisand, about the latest account-based strategies that have allowed them to become experts at personalized marketing. As Mark explains, the company’s tagline “Making Business Personal” serves as the base upon which the rest of their business operates. Mark and his team are proving that it is possible to scale the personalization of content, if you use the right data. While taking advantage of account-based marketing, Coveo’s success has come from strategically utilizing the computing power that allows personalization at large. Mark also shares his insights on how to walk the thin line between helpful and harmful data usage when determining personalization. Learn how to deliver the right content at the right time. Subscribe on Apple Podcasts - Stitcher - or Podsearch What You’ll Learn Coveo’s account-based marketing strategy allows them to reach more markets than ever before When Mark joined the Coveo team in early 2016, he realized that not every account in Coveo’s market needed (or wanted) an in-depth sales presentation. He began to ask the question, “How do we cost-effectively reach the target audience we know we can differentiate to?” He and his team segmented out which clients needed an individualized interaction, which could be a part of a one-to-few presentation, and which could handle a one-to-many approach. By getting specific in the way they approached clients, Coveo was able to land 1 in 5 meetings and raise over $100 million last year. The full story is on this episode, and it’s one you don’t want to miss. Delivering personalized content CAN happen at scale - here’s how Coveo is delivering on that promise Nearly every B2B marketer understands the importance of delivering personalized content to clients; content that adds value to their purchase journey. But many are wondering if this can happen at scale, across dozens of platforms. Coveo’s team is proving that yes, it is possible! Mark tells Drew that it’s all about “Using as much information as you have access to, to make the best guess at what is going to be most statistically likely to be relevant to each individual.” Coveo’s machine-learning programs take data from website interactions, searches, clicked links, etc. and use it to create personalized content streams that can be delivered to clients when they need it most. They’re taking advantage of the world’s computing power and putting it to use. “Making Business Personal” is much more than a tagline, it’s a way of running the entire company Coveo not only uses the tagline “Making Business Personal,” they use it as a foundation upon which the rest of their business operates. Mark explains that “The more you can position an organization against the real goals that your target customer has, and the personal goals they are trying to solve, the more relevant you become.” The B2B market is no longer satisfied with cookie cutter sales pitches. They expect - and deserve - quality personalized content because they experience it every day as a consumer. Why should their workplace experience be any different? The future of marketing present amazing opportunities. As an industry, we waste a lot of interactions, but AI represents an opportunity to change that! On this episode, Mark Floisand, CMO at Coveo, tells us about how data can be our ally in an attempt to complete the work that can no longer successfully done by hand.
