Should old acquaintance be forgot and never brought to mind? … We'll drink a cup of kindness yet for the sake of auld lang syne. Happy New Year's Eve 2024 — and happy new year from Jay of the Dead's New Horror Movies, The Gold Standard of Horror Movie Podcasts! Episode 133 is a historic release for us! First of all, it is the three-year anniversary of our first release of Episode 001, on New Year's Eve of 2021. Second, this episode marks the highest number of hosts that we have live on the call at the same time — count 'em, nine: Behold, this episode features Jay of the Dead, Dave “Dr. Shock” Becker, The Gillman Joel Robertson, Mister Watson, the Southern Gentleman GregaMortis, Count Mackula (intermittently), the Persuasive One Dave Zee, Spawn of the Dead, and our Official Contributor and resident Horror maestro Kagan “The Fruit Brute” Breitenbach! Regrettably, Dr. Walking Dead Kyle Bishop and Ron Martin could not attend this recording; however, rest assured they were otherwise occupied in well-meaning and worthy pursuits! During this show, we host an auditory New Year's Eve party for you! In fact, the end of the episode even has a countdown for the ball-drop to 2025, so if you start playing this episode at exactly 9:56 p.m. (and 36 seconds) — in your time zone, then the runtime of this show coordinates with the 10-count down to 12 a.m. on January 1, 2025! Wooohoooo! So, if you don't have other New Year's plans, we hope you'll party with us. But most importantly, we are here to bring you our in-depth Feature Review of Robert Eggers' Nosferatu (2024) remake. We begin with SPOILER-FREE general thoughts. Then we give you our Ratings and Recommendations. And finally, we have a full-blown SPOILER discussion. All of these segments are indicated by the helpful time stamps below. Oh, and of course, we have our usual jackass antics throughout the show, but especially at the beginning and the end (so be sure to listen all the way to the end for a special surprise)! And Jay of the Dead even sneaks in a little Micro Horror Movie Review of the David Lee Fisher “Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror” remake from 2023, starring Doug Jones! “Succumb to the DORKness,” and ring in the new year with us! While it's still too early to call this a franchise review, we decided to give Damien Leone's Terrifier two-some the full feature review treatment. That's right! For this episode we dropped our individual rating segments to focus on Art the Clown's Halloween hi-jinks and all the sadistic glee that entails. Art would enthusiastically rate his films 10/10 on the Hilarity Meter, but we suspect that setting an all-time high on the Gore-Meter might be more realistic. And just because it's been a while, we're throwing in a deal: check out this episode at no cost to you, and you'll receive a Black Phone absolutely free!* That's right, Ethan Hawke wants to reach out and grab ya! When you peer into the mirror, do you like what you see? What about when you just get out of the shower? That probably depends a great deal on your age… Here in Episode 007 of Jay of the Dead's New Horror Movies, we talk about the increasing appearance of Naked Old People in Horror movies! Sure, we got that dilapidated “dish” in Room 237 in “The Shining” (1980). But the appearance of saggy and baggy bods has surely ticked up in frequency over the past decade with films like, “REC 2” (2009), “The Taking of Deborah Logan” (2014), “The Visit” (2015), “The Witch” (2015), “Hereditary” (2018), “Midsommar” (2019), “It: Chapter Two” (2019), “The Dark and the Wicked” (2020),”Amulet” (2020), and of course, that brings us to our big Feature Review of Ti West's “X” (2022)! In addition to the new Ti West flick, in Episode 007 your favorite Horror hosts also bring you reviews of The Exorcism of God (2022), Umma (2022), Off Season (2022), You Are Not My Mother (2022), and Bhoothakaalam (2022). And as part of our usual, genre-defining PSAs, we even briefly discuss a couple a couple of non-Horror movies, namely, Deep Water (2022), Beneath the Surface (2022). Also in Episode 007, Jay of the Dead reveals the unforgettable true story of how Dr. Shock earned the nickname, “Back-Door Becker.” We also read an email from Candela, our Norwegian high-school student friend, who responds to our hosts' answers (from Episode 006) to her question about American Horror movies influenced by the Cold War. Some of the boys were “deep in their cups,” as they say, while recording this episode, so our coherence may waiver somewhat from segment to segment. And of course, you will get seven, Horror-themed Specialty Segments from each host, including Jay of the Dead's It Could Happen to You Horror, Dr. Shock's Macabre Film History, Gillman Joel's Horror Lagoon, Mister Watson's Horror Hierarchy, The Dead Zone with Dr. Walking Dead, GregaMortis's Monsters on the Mantle, and Horror in Black and White by Mackula!
