This week, we're busting out the slammer and potentially wishing we were back in it depending on who you ask, as we team up with the canary-clad copper to take down a star-studded mob in a wildly stylish and outlandishly conceived blockbuster starring a charming old man incapable of doing action scenes, that's been seemingly buried in the Disney vault in the years since. It's 1990's Dick Tracy, directed and produced by Warren Beatty, and starring Beatty, Madonna, Al Pacino, Glenne Headly, Charlie Korsmo, Mandy Patinkin, Dustin Hoffman, Seymour Cassel, William Forsythe, Charles Durning, Dick Van Dyke, Paul Sorvino, James Caan, Kathy Bates and Catherine O'Hara. Most of these stars are unrecognizeable under the monstrous makeup required to make them look like their vintage crime comic strip counterparts, but Pacino made enough of an impression with a wildly comedic take on his typical mobster persona that he netted an Oscar nom for Best Supporting Actor, losing to Joe Pesci for GoodFellas. While Beatty is at least a decade too old to be proper fit as the movie's lead, it's his ambition behind the camera that makes the movie such a curiosity all these years later, as the film is either an enchanting dreamscape filled with unsolvable How Did They Do That movie magic puzzles, or a steaming pile of neon-drenched puke depending on which of our two hosts you ask. But that's okay, as we have some heated disagreement this week that is maybe the closest we've yet come to vintage Siskel & Ebert kinda stuff. Plus: We've both been to the theater and are happy to sound off on Ryan Coogler's latest as JMo and Hayley both greatly enjoyed Sinners in the cinema, and Justin's got a bonus theatrical field report on Drop, the latest from Happy Death Day director Christopher Landon. If you'd like to watch Dick Tracy before listening along to our conversation, good luck finding a physical copy, and Disney will seemingly never stream this thing on Disney+ -- possibly for rights reasons to avoid paying anything more to Warren Beatty, or possibly because they are cowards who are ashamed of the fun movie they made. Either way, it's tough to find outside of renting it on YouTube. Other works discussed in this episode include Creed, Fruitvale Station, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, Bram Stoker's Dracula, Puss In Boots: The Last Wish, Mad Max: Fury Road, Loki, The Accountant, The Perfect Storm, Bridge of Spies, War Horse, The Adventures of Tintin, Red Eye, Trap, Reign of Fire, Surrogates, The Expendables 2, The Last Boy Scout, Princess Mononoke, Hook, This Is The Tom Green Documentary, Cutthroat Island, Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl, G20, The Silence of the Lambs, Longlegs, Resident Orca, Avatar: The Way of Water, Blackfish, Batman ('89), Batman Returns, Batman Forever, Batman & Robin, Who Framed Roger Rabbit?, X-Men, Blade, The Shadow, The Phantom, The Rocketeer, Darkman, Speed Racer, Furiosa, Challengers and Sin City, among others. We'll be back (more than likely) next week, with another special in-theaters spectacular, as 100+ episodes after we covered the original film, it is tax season once again and we're back for more Ben Affleck and Jon Bernthal in The Accountant 2. So look for that next Friday, and until then we'll see you at the movies!!
Pamela Anderson starring films. Sarah Watt, Jeremy Downing and William Chen discuss The Last Showgirl (2024) and Barb Wire (1996). We begin by discussing Barb Wire and showering it with praise (excuse the pun). We celebrate the 90s-ness of the film. We talk about all the homages and connections we noticed in Barb Wire, including Casablanca (1942), Batman Forever (1995), Alien 3 (1992), Mad Max (1979), Romeo + Juliet (1996), Candyman (1992), Strange Days (1995), and Total Recall (1990). We praise the cast, including Xander Berkeley, Udo Kier and Temuera Morrison. We discuss the production values of Barb Wire, including the visual effects, action, cinematography and other production values. Our conversation explores the criticism of Barb Wire and how the tastes of audiences shifted over the 90s, making connections to Waterworld (1995), Cutthroat Island (1995), Hook (1991) and Charlie's Angels (2000). We move our discussion to The Last Showgirl, directed by Gia Coppola. We talk about the strength of the performances from Pamela Anderson, Brenda Song, Dave Bautista, Billie Lourd and Jamie Lee Curtis. We unpack the script, the tone, the direction and the ultimate aim of the film, with differing reactions from Sarah, William and Jeremy.
On today's show, we do a bit of "vampire vs werewolf" counter-programming as we pivot away from the Twilight Saga and step into the action-horror world...of UNDERWORLD (2003)! We talk about the mythology of this franchise, the behind-the-scenes drama during the filming of this movie, all of the characters essentially dressing the same, the retroactively-added scene from a later film added to Unrated Cut, the confusing tale of two Danny McBrides, & of course..."Gusher bullets"! We also discuss Footloose (1984), Cutthroat Island (1995), ads on Prime Video, & an important LTAS Declaration for 2025 and beyond! ———————————————————— To see images of the stuff discussed, look at your device's screen while listening! For decades there was a "pirate movie curse" that doomed every movie that dared to dip its toe into that particular pool. (That curse was ultimately broken by Captain Jack Sparrow, of course.) And the poster child for that pirate movie curse has got to be Renny Harlin's 1995 financial disaster Cutthroat Island. But fortunately we have frequent guest Fred Topel on hand to offer a firm defense of a movie that lost about $100,000,000 and helped destroy an entire production company. Happy Holidays! This week, Josh and Drusilla watch the Christmas-y RKO classic, The Curse of the Cat People from Val Lewton. From wiki: “The Curse of the Cat People is a 1944 American psychological supernatural thriller film[1][2][3] directed by Gunther von Fritsch and Robert Wise, produced by Val Lewton, and starring Simone Simon, Kent Smith, Jane Randolph, and Ann Carter. It tells a story about a young girl who befriends the ghost of her father's deceased first wife, a Serbian fashion designer who descended from a race of people who could transform into cats. The film, which marks Wise's first directing credit, is a sequel to Cat People (1942) and has many of the same central characters, but the plot is only tangentially related to its predecessor. Do you remember that phase of the internet where everything was about pirates? Like everyone would mention when it's talk like a pirate day and things like that. We go a little further back before all that with Cutthroat Island(1995). A movie you'll probably see a whole lot on lists of biggest box office bombs. It and Show Girls killed the studio that made it. Geena Davis is the daughter of a pirate captain. Her dad is one of three pirates that has a map to a massive buried treasure. Her uncle pirate, Frank Langella, kills her dad in his quest for the treasure. So it's something of a race … Continue reading "Popcorn Pulse 232: French Cutthroat"
This week on The Video Store Podcast, we're diving into some adventurous waters with four pirate films you might not have rented yet, but are worth a look. These films span decades, showing how Hollywood has captured the allure of swashbuckling adventures over time. Whether you're a fan of classic Hollywood, musicals, or big-budget ‘90s action, I've picked a lineup that I think captures the spirit of the genre in different ways. Here's what's on this episode:Captain Blood (1935)If you're curious about Errol Flynn's big break, Captain Blood is the film to watch. Directed by Michael Curtiz, who later went on to make Casablanca, this movie was released during the Golden Age of Hollywood and set the standard for pirate films to come. In it, Flynn plays Dr. Peter Blood, an Irish physician turned reluctant pirate, a role that became iconic for him. Olivia de Havilland co-stars, marking the first of eight films they'd appear in together. The movie was actually adapted from Rafael Sabatini's 1922 novel, and what's interesting is that Flynn wasn't the studio's first choice. Warner Bros. originally wanted Robert Donat, but when he turned it down, they took a chance on Flynn, who was then unknown. The film went on to be a hit, and Flynn's career took off from there.Treasure Island (1950) Disney's first fully live-action film was Treasure Island, adapted from Robert Louis Stevenson's novel. This film captures the heart of the classic pirate tale with Bobby Driscoll as Jim Hawkins and Robert Newton as the unforgettable Long John Silver. Newton's portrayal of Silver is what many credit with shaping the “pirate accent” we recognize today, especially that exaggerated “Arrr.” For a lot of people, myself included, this is the definitive version of Treasure Island, so it's a must-watch for anyone wanting a straightforward adaptation of the classic tale. The Pirate Movie (1982)The Pirate Movie is very different from the last two films. It is more of a campy, musical rom-com take on The Pirates of Penzance. If you're looking for a quirky, offbeat experience, this film, starring Kristy McNichol and Christopher Atkins, is definitely that. Though critics weren't fond of it when it was released, it's gained a bit of a cult following since then. One interesting thing about this movie is that it openly riffs on the Gilbert and Sullivan opera it's based on, adding a lot of modern (for the time) references. It's worth a watch if you're into musicals and don't mind a less traditional approach to a pirate story.Cutthroat Island (1995)Last up is Cutthroat Island, an ambitious, big-budget adventure directed by Renny Harlin and starring Geena Davis and Matthew Modine. Known mostly for being a notorious box office bomb, it has gained some appreciation over the years for its impressive stunt work, practical effects, and for putting a female pirate in the lead. Davis plays Morgan Adams, a captain on a quest to find hidden treasure. While the film's financial failure might have overshadowed its merits at the time, there's a lot to admire. It's also one of the last pirate movies before Pirates of the Caribbean would revive the genre nearly a decade later. If you're ready for a bit of pirate escapism, these four movies offer different takes on the genre, from classic Hollywood adventure to musical satire to large-scale nineties action. Listen to the show to hear a little more about each film and why they're worth watching, and maybe even renting, this week. This is a public episode. It's time again for our now-annual Turkey Month, and we're kicking off a November's worth of big budget turkeys with Cutthroat Island, the pirate movie that plundered Carolco of their last remaining doubloons, and sent Geena Davis' career as a swashbuckler off the side of a boat. CHAPTERS: (00:00:00) - The Nextlander Watchcast Episode 113: Cutthroat Island (1995) (00:00:18) - Intro. (00:02:08) - Our first turkey for November: Cutthroat Island! (00:07:37) - The Renny Harlin factor, and the initial (fairly different) pitch for this movie. (00:12:06) - THEY KILLED CAROLCO! (00:18:15) - The cast we got, and the cast we could have had. (00:23:30) - Listing off some of the myriad curses that befell this production (and some debate about Davis' stunts). (00:32:16) - Despite all the troubles, they pulled this one off at the box office, right?!? (No.) (00:38:49) - Addressing any lingering questions before we get into the movie proper. (00:43:58) - Break! (00:44:24) - We're back, and here's what the hell is happening in this movie. (00:54:21) - The introduction of William Shaw. (00:59:28) - I saved a guy who speaks Latin, what did you ever do? (01:02:26) - One of the few bright spots: the carriage chase. (01:04:41) - These puzzles suck. (01:06:11) - Time to dig up another uncle. (01:12:43) - Gunshot wound? No problem! (01:17:45) - An interminable mutiny before we finally get to Cutthroat Island. (01:25:31) - Oh look, treasure. (01:29:49) - Let's blow some stuff up for like 30 minutes. (01:37:11) - We saved the treasure! (...and Shaw!) (01:40:32) - Final thoughts. (01:46:04) - Some talk about our film for next week: Waterworld! (01:51:28) - Outro.

Renny has stories from casting to shooting to the emotion & cry charts he made for his actors. Yo ho mateys! One of the most unlikely franchises to become a multi-billion dollar grossing juggernaut was indeed Disney's Pirates of the Caribbean series. Led by Johnny Depp's iconic Jack Sparrow, the series has run five instalments (to date) and grossed an estimated 4.5 billion dollars worldwide. This is pretty incredible considering that, in 2003, the first film was seen as a huge gamble. Pirate-based swashbucklers hadn't been popular since the days of Errol Flynn, and modern attempts to revitalize the genre, including 1983's Nate & Hayes, Roman Polanski's Pirates and 1995's Cutthroat Island, were all notorious flops. Add to that the fact that Johnny Depp was going pretty far out with his “hero” Jack Sparrow, who looked much more like Keith Richards than Errol Flynn, and you had one nervous studio. However, the resulting film was an absolute smash, leading to four sequels of varying quality. In this episode of WTF You Need to Know About This Franchise (written, edited and narrated by Kier Gomes and produced by Tyler Nichols), we dig into the saga and give our picks for which Jack Sparrow adventures you should go on and which ones you can skip.
“Congratulations, Morgan. There's another town you've destroyed.”After the success of Die Hard 2 and Cliffhanger, director Renny Harlin wanted to establish his wife Geena Davis as an action star. He sought out a swashbuckling pirate adventure script for her to lead. Screenwriters Michael Frost Beckner and James Gorman had written an initial draft, but extensive rewrites resulted in multiple additional credited writers. With Geena Davis attached to the lead role of pirate captain Morgan Adams, finding the right co-lead proved challenging. Michael Douglas was originally set to play opposite Davis but dropped out due to issues over equal screen time. Numerous major stars were offered the role including Tom Cruise, Keanu Reeves, Russell Crowe, Liam Neeson and Daniel Day-Lewis before Harlin settled on Matthew Modine. With the stars finally set, cameras rolled on location in Malta and Thailand. But behind the scenes, the production was plagued with problems that led to massive cost overruns. Join us – Pete Wright and Andy Nelson – as we continue the 1995 Golden Raspberry Awards Worst Director Nominees series with a conversation about Harlin's 1995 film CutThroat Island. Here's a hint at what we talk about:We discuss the issues with the constantly evolving script and poor dialogue, along with miscasting of the leads and lack of chemistry between Davis and Modine. We also get into the impressive practical effects and action set pieces, despite flaws elsewhere. And we talk about the legendary reputation of this box office bomb that sunk Carolco Pictures. Here are a few other points in our discussion:Renny Harlin's strengths and weaknesses as a directorThe great production design and cinematographyHow the film hasn't aged particularly wellOur armchair casting for who could have been better in the lead rolesIn the end, we found CutThroat Island to be a mixed bag with plenty of problems holding it back yet still quite entertaining and delivering a romping pirate adventure. It makes for an interesting case study in a big budget production gone awry. We have a great time talking about it, so check it out then tune in. We're coming in hot and heavy with Cutthroat Island, one of the biggest box office bombs in history (adjusted for inflation). This film is a naughty nautical adventure of a lifetime that nobody wants to be on, including us. But here we are, doing what we do best and beating ourselves over our heads until the concussion stars start to look like hidden treasure in our mind's eye. ... moving on. Painful pirate production proves pathetic! Whore hates Morgan's homosexual hints! Firing on fine townsfolk! Putting a pocketknife in a person's posterior! Pointing piercy pokers in a person's penis! Damaging daddy's dermis with a dull dagger! Screech the boob-ruiner! Untreated scalp goo? Sewage pipe logic! Scribbly dome semantics! Mail order tavern wenches! Way too skinny quicksand sticks! Worm-fisted monkeys, and much, much more on this week's episode of The Worst Movie Ever Made! www.theworstmovieevermade.com Email us, make fun of us, and most importantly, recommend movies. Next week we'll be watching Morbius because Jacob emailed us and told us to watch it. This could be your life, but you're a coward.

Action Hero: Morgan Adams PSA: as any sea-dawg worth his salt knows, you can't embark on a voyage without a good stash of rum…and so, for this voyage on the good ship TLAH the rum was plentiful. Maybe too plentiful. Caution: side effects include giggling, arguments, nonsense and spontaneous rapping. Listener discretion is advised. How much actual stuff do we have in the world compared to what we need to make the 'Green Revolution' happen? This week's guest is another of those recently elevated to my pantheon of people I Must Listen To whatever they say and however they say it and I am genuinely thrilled to welcome him onto the podcast. Dr Simon Michaux has been a physicist and geologist. His PhD is in mining engineering and he worked for years in the mining industries in Australia. In 2015, he moved to Europe and became involved in urban mining, or reverse metallurgy, which is to say the recovery of essential minerals from existing waste - what we would call the beginnings of the circular economy - and from there, he moved to Scandinavia where he now works in the Geological Survey of Finland and is a regular advisor to the Finnish parliament. From all of which you will gather that Simon is deeply embedded in the actual physicality of the world we inhabit - and, because he's also committed to creating the future we want and need, he is growing ideas of the future we could inhabit. Of all the people I've encountered as I roam the digital web for ways we can shift our relationship with the living web, Simon is the one who has his finger on the actual logistics of what's going on - he can list the reasons why most of the targets for our transition away from fossil fuels are simply logistically impossible. It's not until you hear his crunching of the numbers that you begin to realise how much arm waving is going on in the corridors of power. How much raw self-delusion is being practice by the people who we still, at some deep subconscious level, trust to keep the show on the road. And I think we need to know this. It's hard. It's sobering. It's shocking, on many levels, but if we aren't grounded in reality then we're not going to build forward So hold onto your seats - this isn't easy, but we do need to know it. And then we need to plan our responses. Fast. Hello, fellow underdogs! We're back with Matt Belenky — film producer/film writer/film aficionado/Pittsburgh native — to discus one of the best Die Hard clone movies ever put to screen: Peter Hyams' 90's classic, Sudden Death. Matt recently celebrated Sudden Death's timeless charm and Pittsburghian ethos in the Pittsburgh Orbit article Terrorism in Overtime: Sudden Death Turns 25, and he fills us in on all the local details you'll want to hear: the casting of real-life Penguins broadcasting duo Mike Lange and Paul Steigerwald as themselves, the story being conceived by Karen Elise Baldwin (daughter of then-Penguins owner Howard Baldwin, who produced the film), and the strange circumstances in which the hockey game was filmed during the NHL lockout. We also talk about how well the film marries action genre tropes with the sports genre tropes, the fast clip at which the deaths pile up and the plotting skates along, whether or not this is Jean-Claude Van Damme's best or most iconic role, the savvy inclusion of the props/backrooms/corridors/interstices of the now-demolished Civic Arena, the hilarious culinary-themed kills (i.e., the death of the Pens mascot, Iceburgh, in an industrial-sized dishwasher), and the stunningly shot stunt work/action set pieces (i.e., the helicopter crashing into the Jumbotron). Oh, and to break the ice, we have a blast breaking down the entire slate of box office releases in late December 1995 (Waiting to Exhale, Grumpier Old Men, Nixon, Dracula: Dead & Loving It, Balto, Four Rooms, Tom & Huck, Cutthroat Island, etc...) — with each of us picking the one movie we'd choose to see if we had only enough allowance to buy a single ticket on opening weekend. Enjoy!

Yarrr! Shiver me timbers! 'Tis the 1995 movie that made us voluntarily seek Davey Jones' locker. We walk the plank of 90's spectacle filmmaking to reconsider a movie that no one boarded, and it still sank to the ocean floor despite extravagant sets, seemingly real boats, giant cannons, a monkey and the always watchable Geena Davis. ...and yet...
