Eric's Perspective : A podcast series on African American art
In this episode, Eric sits down with pioneering video artist, performing artist and painter Anthony Ramos. They discuss his background - being raised in Providence, Rhode Island and tracing his ancestor's journey to America from Cape Verde. How he discovered his love for making art at a young age and how his mother and father encouraged his interests. How he cultivated his artistic abilities. How he began his studies as a Political Science Major… to converting to art — studying painting at Southern Illinois University, where he was a graduate assistant to Allan Kaprow and eventually received an M.F.A. from CalArts. Having a video studio in New York. A conscientious objector of the Vietnam war… being jailed for draft evasion… and how all of these experiences have shaped his life. The artists that have inspired him and the many exciting adventures he has had - while traveling widely in Europe, Africa, China and the Middle East during the 1970s and 1980s. Documenting the end of Portugal's colonial rule in Cape Verde and Guinea-Bissau. They discuss how his work has evolved through the years… being known as “The Grandfather Video" — to his passion for painting which is now his primary medium. Why he left the United States to now — living in the South of France and the exciting projects he has in store..! Guest Bio: Performance and media artist Anthony Ramos was among the earliest video artists to use the medium as a tool for mass media critiques and cultural documentation, and to examine media presentations of "truth." In his powerful but rarely seen video works of the 1970s, Ramos sought to combine art and activism, giving agency to marginalized individuals and communities. In his earliest black-and-white video pieces, Ramos engaged in forceful, direct performances for the camera, often using physical endurance and actions to confront political issues.Ramos has traveled widely in Europe, Africa, China and the Middle East. He videotaped the end of Portugal's colonial rule of Cape Verde and Guinea-Bissau, Teheran during the 1980 hostage crisis, and Beijing just prior to the Tiananmen Square massacre. Ramos produced a number of video works that critique the media through deconstruction and appropriation, and explore the relation of mass cultural imagery, African-American identity, and the politics of race in America. In the late 1980s he turned to painting as his primary medium.Ramos was born in 1944 in Providence, Rhode Island. He received an M.F.A. from the California Institute of the Arts, where he was assistant to Allan Kaprow. Among his awards are a National Endowment for the Arts Visual Arts Fellowship and a Rockefeller Foundation Fellowship. In the 1970s Ramos was a video consultant for the United Nations and the National Council of Churches. In the 1980s, he lived in Paris where he was a Professor at the American Center, and oversaw the television cabling of ten blocks of Paris for the first time. He has also taught at Rhode Island School of Design, New York University, and the University of California at San Diego. Ramos lives in Eyguieres, France. For more on Eric's Perspective, visit www.ericsperspective.com#ERICSPERSPECTIVE #AFRICANAMERICAN #ARTSUBSCRIBE: http://bit.ly/2vVJkDnConnect with us ONLINE: Visit Eric's Perspective website: https://bit.ly/2ZQ41x1Facebook: https://bit.ly/3jq5fXPInstagram: https://bit.ly/39jFZxGX: https://bit.ly/2OMTikTok: https://bit.ly/4cv8zfg

Kevin and Lauren are back this week with reviews of Transformers One, Twisters, Rebel Ridge, Avatar: The Way of Water, and Mother of the Bride. Lauren kicks off the show with a trip to the theater to see Twisters. It's not really a remake or a sequel, but it is about Glenn Powell, Daisy Edgar Jones, and Anthony Ramos chasing tornadoes, so it's not a bad thing! Overall it's a great summer watch with an engaging story and, of course the acting is solid. Give it a watch! Next up, Kevin takes us to his old familiar haunt at Netflix. Rebel Ridge, starring Aaron Pierre just dropped a few days ago and it's a great action flick. Pierre is a star on the rise after this one. The action is solid and displays a very unique "no kill" rule. The bits between that action are filled with excellent drama and this one is worth the time, for sure. We hop in our wayback machine next (ok, not that FAR back), as Lauren gives her review of Avatar: The Way of Water. In the best of ways, this is more of the same from the Avatar universe. the story is compelling, the acting is great, and the visuals are incredible. This one can currently ne found on Disney Plus. In a rare occurrence, Kevin had the opportunity to sneak peak a movie before it was released. He and his boys got ticket to Transformers One and this might just be the best Transformers film to date. The OG may win for nostalgia purposes, but this is an excellent story about the friendship and falling out of the two mining robots who would become Optimus Prime and Megatron. While this story is more told from Orion Pax's point of view, they standout character progression is the story of the breakdown of D16 to Megatron. Get your tickets now and see it opening weekend! In what might be one of the funniest reviews in a very long time, Lauren discusses Mother of the Bride on Netflix. This review may cost us the Netflix sponsorship we were never going to get. Lauren absolutely did not enjoy this film and you can feel it the whole review and it's so much fun! The review... not the movie. As always, thank you for watching. If you haven't already, don't forget to Like & Subscribe. We love new viewers! Also, leave us comments and let is know how we are doing and what we can be doing better. Enjoy the episode and have a great week! Facebook: @apncpodcast Twitter: @APNCPodcast Instagram: AllPopNoCulture

Kat and A.C. are starving for a blockbuster to make them feel something, as if the movies are actually, finally back. So, they saw Lee Isaac Chung's Twisters, and unfortunately—they're still hungry. Listen in as they hypothesize about what Glenn Powell's character was doing in the years before the events of this film took place (while Anthony Ramos' was “working for the military” and Daisy Edgar-Jones' was Being A City Girl). We drive our giant storm chasing pickup trucks directly from the theater to the studio to talk this super fun disaster, action blockbuster. Written by Mark L. Smith and Joseph Kosinski. Welcome to Multiverse News, your source for information about all of your favorite fictional universes. Hot off the heels of July's San Diego Comic Con, Disney continued their full court press last week with the D23 Expo, where a smattering of announcements were made. So, let's tackle the latest and greatest news from the House of Mouse's more geek-centric divisions Regarding Marvel Studios, Disney Plus was front and center, with a fair amount of official, as well as leaked footage, released; delighting fans worldwide: A fresh trailer for the WandaVision sequel series, Agatha All Along, debuted, accompanied by a live performance of an original song titled "The Ballad of the Witches Road." The Daredevil: Born Again trailer seemed to generate unanimous positivity, with hype moments such as the return of Jon Bernthal as the Punisher and Wilson Bethel as Bullseye. It also gave D23 audiences their first glimpses of the costumed vigilante White Tiger and a new villain, Muse. A first look at Ironheart also debuted, confirming the series is still on the way. Beside the return of Riri Williams, other new details include Anthony Ramos as The Hood and an appearance from Shuri. On the film side, the splash was not as big as SDCC, with much of that material being recycled, but new images and footage for both Captain America: Brave New World and The Fantastic Four: First Steps were showcased, which included a taste of Michael Giacchino's main musical theme for the quartet. Over in the galaxy far, far away: Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni showed off the first footage from The Mandalorian & Grogu, which will be the first new theatrical release for Star Wars since 2019, as well as the first based off of a Disney Plus series. The official trailer for the Jude Law-led Skeleton Crew debuted, giving fans a tease of the Speilbergian influence. We also learned more about Jude Law's character, a force user named Jod Na Nawood, via the plot synopsis. Lucasfilm also showed off some footage of the upcoming season of Andor, which confirmed more Rogue One character returns. Diego Luna also revealed the next season takes place over four years in a series of time jumps. Bringing it back to Marvel with their animation offerings, the D23 panel provided significant updates on several series: While Marvel Zombies is still “a while out” we now know it will be four episodes and rated TV-MA. Eyes of Wakanda will also be four episodes long. What If…? voice actor Hudson Thames, will reprise his role as Peter Parker for Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man, with Colman Domingo voicing Norman Osborne and Charlie Cox as Daredevil. The series will premiere November 2, 2024. Finally, honing in on Disney's “homegrown” projects, as Bob Iger promised, sequels were all the rage: Pixar won the day in terms of the amount of project news. A very brief Toy Story 5 teaser trailer indicated the return of Woody and Brad Bird was announced to return to direct Incredibles 3. Zoe Saldana joined the cast of Elio, which is now slated for May 2025. Hoppers was announced as the studios next feature, with Jon Hamm in a villain role. Dream Productions, an Inside Out spin-off series, and Win or Lose, a new series focusing on a little league team, were also announced. Trailers for Moana 2, Mufasa: The Lion King and the Snow White live action remake were released, as well as new details for Frozen 3 and Zootopia 2. Frozen 3 will get a pre-Thanksgiving release of November 24, 2027 and they released concept art. Plus Frozen 4 is already in early development and The “live action” version of Stitch from Lilo & Stitch also made his debut. On Saturday, Deadpool and Wolverine reached the milestone of becoming the second R-Rated movie in history to cross $1 billion dollars at the international box office. It is nipping at the heels of Joker to become the highest grossing R-Rated movie of all time.

The movie event of the summer has arrived! We saw Twisters in 4DX with motion-seats, wind, spraying water, vibration, smoke, and strobe lights! On a packed discount night at the Regal North Hollywood, Twisters proved to be the perfect 4DX movie that rocked our worlds for two solid hours. After sharing our recently rediscovered love for Jan de Bont's Twister (1996), we headed into the Pepsi 4DX with large Pepsis in hand. From the opening tornado scene, we knew we were in trouble. Twisters is directed by Lee Isaac Chung and stars Daisy Edgar-Jones, Glen Powell, Anthony Ramos, Brandon Perea, Maura Tierney, and Sasha Lane. Deadpool & Wolverine unfortunately kicked Twisters out of 4DX, but if you somehow get a chance to see it in 4DX, DO IT! And if you feel it, chase it! We got twins!!

In 1996, a summer blockbuster movie blew into theaters and knocked everybody off their feet. That movie was “Twister” and starred Helen Hunt and the late, great Bill Paxton. Now 28 years later, we get a long awaited follow-up to that tornado-terrific, earth-moving box office hit, called “Twisters.” Now instead of Bill Paxton, the rapidly rising star Glen Powell tries to fill his boots. He plays Tyler, who calls himself a tornado wrangler who likes to go viral and peddle his merch. One of his phrases, as he tries to entertain his fans, is “You don't face your fears. You ride em'!” We also have Daisy Edgar-Jones as Kate, who was a storm chaser until tragedy struck, and so now she stays out of the field. Just so the plot can move forward, she's coaxed back out into the wild, windy west to help some other storm chasers potentially save lives from a mass of tornadoes. All these characters bring their impressive and intricate modern day technology to this world of tornadoes, but no amount of tech will save you from the deadly, disastrously massive force of a tornado and the debris that it turns into lethal projectiles. Will Tyler take it too far in finding that rush? Can Kate do anything to give the people in the path of these fatal forces of nature a chance? Is it worth finding out? Check out this episode to find out! “Twisters” also stars Anthony Ramos, Brandon Perea, Maura Tierney, Harry Hadden-Paton, Sasha Lane, Daryl McCormack, Kiernan Shipka, Nik Dodani, David Corenswet, Tunde Adebimpe, Katy O'Brian, David Born, Paul Scheer, Laura Poe, Austin Bullock and Stephen Oyoung. Daisy Edgar-Jones stars as Kate Cooper, a former storm chaser haunted by a devastating encounter with a tornado during her college years who now studies storm patterns on screens safely in New York City. She is lured back to the open plains by her friend, Javi (Golden Globe nominee Anthony Ramos, In the Heights) to test a groundbreaking new tracking system. Andy Farnsworth joins KSL-TV to help audiences decipher #WhatToWatch for the weekend of July 19, 2024. The year of Glen Powell continues as he headlines, along with Daisy Edgar-Jones and Anthony Ramos, the "standalone sequel" “Twisters,” on the big screen. Over on streaming, Dave Bautista returns to lead an action-comedy streaming sequel movie called "My Spy: The Eternal City," which is silly but occasionally hilarious on Amazon Prime. Andy’s pick of the week is the Netflix documentary "Skywalkers: A Love Story," which is NOT about Star Wars, but rather some thrill-seekers who illegally climb the outside of skyscrapers and take photos/videos at the top. It's almost impossible to believe! And we have to mention the sixth and final season of the “Cobra Kai” TV series, also on Netflix, begins as the dojos prepare for the Sekai Taikai tournament and the final showdown with their arch-nemesis. The brains behind Fan Effect are connoisseurs of categories surpassing nerdy with a goal to publish a weekly "What to Watch on the Weekend" minisodes, taken from KSL-TV's Friday segment, and two deep-dives a month on shows, creative works, artists, local events, and other fandom topics. Based in the beautiful beehive state, Fan Effect celebrates Utah's unique fan culture as it has been declared The Nerdiest State in America by TIME, and is hosted by KSL Movie Show's Andy Farnsworth and KSL Podcasts' KellieAnn Halvorsen. It's another guestapalooza on this week's Empire Podcast, as Chris Hewitt has lovely chats with Twisters stars Glen Powell, Daisy Edgar-Jones, and Phizzy Pigtails aficionado Anthony Ramos [19:46 - 35:02 approx], and their director Lee Isaac Chung [1:39:17 - 1:56:06 approx]; and Beth Webb has a lovely audience with the marvellous June Squibb, star of Thelma (there are sound issues for the first couple of minutes, but they're quickly resolved). [1:01:03 - 1:13:59 approx] Then, Chris is joined in the podbooth by Helen O'Hara, James Dyer, and returning fourth chairer, Jeremy Dylan, to discuss the ultimate Mount Rushmore question, cast their eye over the week's movie news (including discussion of the rumoured return of the Russo Brothers to the MCU), and review Twisters, Thelma and Blur: To The End, while James bangs on relentlessly about a new Aliens documentary in which he features. This time it's more. Enjoy.

Evan is off this week, so Megan and Dave braved this week's releases. Actually, Dave didn't see TWISTERS (2:39) — Lee Isaac Chung's disaster movie legacy sequel starring Daisy Edgar-Jones, Glen Powell, and Anthony Ramos — so it's up to Megan to tell you, dear listeners, that it's kind of crap. She has some positive things say about it (Glen Powell, for example)…but not many. Both Megan and Dave saw WIDOW CLICQUOT (21:52), a period-piece biopic directed by Thomas Napper about Barbe-Nicole Ponsardin Clicquot who took over her husband's champagne business after his death. French people, chateaus, business? Dave's all about it (and all about Haley Bennett!). Megan liked it but didn't love it. Finally, they both saw ODDITY (39:07), Damian Mc Carthy's eerie horror film about a psychic (Carolyn Bracken) investigating her twin sister's murder, and his follow-up to CAVEAT. And they loved it! No complaints! Four stars! This movie is one creepy bastard! Over on Patreon, Megan and Dave talked about TWISTER, Jan de Bont's 1996 film starring Helen Hunt and Bill Paxton, because apparently the pain of TWISTERS wasn't enough. (We actually enjoy it!)
