Due to several big-time free agents still unsigned, some MLB players are talking players strike. Chip and Cern dig little into what started the 1994 MLB Strike. Chip and Cern review the Adam Wainwright clip where he is talking about a strike. Find out who is still unsigned, how much are they making and some Giants salary talk on this episode of the Chip and Cern Show. Bryce Harper and Manny Machado are the two biggest free agents that are yet to be signed and many think that owners are colluding against these big players and their contracts. Chip has some tips on how to get the strike does not look like some money grab. Chip and Cern learn up about what caused the 1994 strike and how it affected the game after that. Chip just starts reading off some stats from the 1994 strike-shortened season. Cern has a great point in saying the game of baseball isn’t ready for a strike. Attendance is down, and the game is tough to keep up with, so a strike isn’t a good one to take for the MLB. Here are the remaining free agents for 2019 MLB: Catchers Martin Maldonado (32, 0.9) Matt Wieters (33, 0.9) First basemen Hanley Ramirez (35, -0.2) Logan Morrison (31, -0.7) Second basemen Josh Harrison (31, 0.3) Logan Forsythe (32, -0.2) Brandon Phillips (38, -0.3) Third basemen Chase Headley (35, -0.4) Danny Valencia (34, -0.4) Jose Reyes (36, -0.9) Shortstops Manny Machado (26 years old, 6.2 WAR) Jose Iglesias (29, 2.5) Left fielders Marwin Gonzalez (30, 1.6) Denard Span (35, 1.5) Craig Gentry (35, 0.6) Matt Holliday (39, 0.1) Center fielders Adam Jones (33, 0.5) Austin Jackson (32, -1.0) Right fielders Bryce Harper (26 years old, 3.5 WAR) Carlos Gonzalez (33, 1.7) Jose Bautista (38, 1.0) Carlos Gomez (33, -0.5) Chris Young (35, -0.5) Designated hitters Evan Gattis (32, 0.0) Starting pitchers Dallas Keuchel (31, 3.6) Gio Gonzalez (33, 2.0) Clay Buchholz (34, 1.9) James Shields (37, 0.8) Edwin Jackson (35, 0.7) Doug Fister (35, 0.3) -- Retired (2/13). Brian and Roger looked back at the over/under predictions they made for the 2017 Mets season back in April to their occasional utter embarrassment. The boys also found time to shake their heads and try to make sense of the latest Matt Harvey injury news and losing Bartolo Colon yet again. Then they had a chat with writer and big time Mets fan Sean O'Connor (Hood Adjacent with James Davis, Late Late Show with James Corden) about Chris Christie, Steve Somers, Kevin James, Facebook message boards, trying to get James Davis to do a Garfield joke, having the absolute worst luck attending baseball games, the Mets chances of winning the wild card, naming your child after a former Met, renaming Brian's 'hot rebuild' idea, if it's ever too late in your life to just focus on throwing a knuckleball, how to get into comedy, and much more. To follow along with Brian and Roger with their predictions, consult this bad boy: https://goodfundies.com/the-2017-mets-over-unders-bf39b8fbc348 Watch 'Hood Adjacent with James Davis' on Comedy Central Wednesdays at 9/8 central, aka whenever Fernando Salas is on the mound, or whenever on cc.com.
4/15/17: Christian Yelich and Giancarlo Stanton hurt the Mets with crushing homers. Terry Collins shares his thoughts on the disappointing loss. Jacob deGrom discusses not having changeup command in a game in which he struck out 13, and Fernando Salas talks about allowing back-to-back homers to the Marlins.
Brian and Roger said goodbye to Adam Rubin and Ty Kelly and discussed the reunions of Jerry Blevins and Fernando Salas to the team, wondering if the two will bring the Mets to glory or nah. After Roger successfully proved in one important way how Jay Bruce is objectively better than Giancarlo Stanton, Brian broke down what the new ZiPS projections from Dan Szymborski say about the Mets chances in 2017. Then in the main event, Joe DeMayo of St. Lucie to Flushing battled Brian in the #StateoftheMets debate. The two argued over how well the Mets will do this season, if the payroll is big enough, what to expect from David Wright, if the Nationals are a threat to Mets' way of living, what to do with a problem like Jay Bruce, what one aspect of the franchise they would change if they could, and more if you could believe it. Then Brian and Roger chatted with DeMayo about Mets prospects of the past, including Dilson Herrera, because Brian has got to stay on brand, as well as Reese Havens and Fernando "F-Mart" Martinez, because the boys love to pander to the masses. In the mailbag, the "guys of Good Fundies" got their first ever voice memo. Listeners can send a voice memo or just an old fashioned email to goodfundies@gmail.com. It's free to do so.
Keith Law of ESPN released his farm system report and the Mets shined with a #7 ranking. Despite the Michael Fulmer trade and the promotions of Conforto, Nimmo, Rivera, Gsellman and Lugo, there is still a ton of value in the system. Michael Mayer of Metsminor.net joins Mike Silva to talk about this ranking. Michael gives comps to top prospects Amed Rosario and Dominic Smith. Hear his thoughts on how the Mets have fared in the international market. Can young arms like Justin Dunn and Thomas Szapucki allow the Mets to absorb losses to their young rotation? Finally, are there value arms in the system that will allow Sandy Alderson to pass on veterans Jerry Blevins and Fernando Salas in the free agent market? Michael and Silva address all this and more in the latest farm report.
Mike Silva is joined by Matt Ehalt of The Record to discuss the latest hot stove news with the Mets. Hear them talk about why letting Bartolo Colon go was the right thing to do, the Yoenis Cespedis market and whether Neil Walker will accept the Qualifying Offer. They also talk about the Mets lack of right-handed components in the lineup and how this isn’t an easy fix. Jay Bruce or Curtis Granderson? Matt tells Mike why Bruce will probably be traded. Finally he gives free agent predictions on Jerry Blevins, Kelly Johnson and Fernando Sales. Mike wraps up the show talking about how interesting the Veterans Committee ballot is this season, which includes former Mets manager Davey Johnson.
To celebrate the Mets making the postseason (yay!), here's a bonus installment of Good Fundies. This was the mailbag portion of the show Roger and Brian recorded a few nights ago that was just too entertaining (weird) to be put on the regular episode. They talked Fernando Salas, Jay Bruce, if David Wright should become the manager, and Brian asked Roger a couple of ethics questions after Brian promised Roger he wouldn't call him a monster again.
Tanner Roark and Robert Gsellman dueled it out in D.C., but Wilson Ramos hit a big home run in what ended up a 1-0 Washington Nationals’ win over the New York Mets. Ramos drove in the only run of the game with a 427 foot blast to center field in Nationals Park, taking Mets' reliever Fernando Salas deep to give the Nats 2 of 3 from NY in D.C. The win left the Nationals 87-59 on the year with a magic number of seven to clinch the NL East.
