In this episode, we sit down with Adam Rubin from DogandaJeep—a passionate road tripper who turned his dream of exploring Alaska with his Alaskan Malamute, Odin, into a reality. Adam shares how his love for snow, adventure, and the open road inspired him to move from Detroit to Fairbanks, where he's been living and exploring for the past few years. With the perspective of a seasoned traveler and winter camping expert, Adam offers practical advice on driving through Alaska in all seasons, camping in subzero temperatures, and traveling with pets. From unforgettable journeys up the Dalton Highway to tips for staying comfortable in extreme conditions, Adam's story is both inspiring and packed with insights for anyone planning their own Alaskan adventure. Episode Guest Adam Rubin is the Creative Director for the University of Alaska Fairbanks. After spending 10 years working for the Detroit Pistons of the NBA, he decided to make the leap and move to Alaska to camp and explore the Arctic region of North America. With his 10-year-old Alaskan Malamute, Odin, by his side, he drives an average of 30,000 miles a year, often embarking on 10+ day, 6,000-mile road trips throughout the North and the Pacific Northwest. When not working for UAF, he uses Instagram and YouTube as creative outlets to share his journeys with friends and family, showcasing the raw beauty of Alaska year-round. • Instagram • YouTube Resources Mentioned in this Episode - Alaska Overland Adventures - Alaska Overlander 4x4 Camping Rentals - Garmin inReach Satellite Communicator - Thermacell Mosquito Repellant - We're the Russos YouTube Channel - Newsletter sign up - Book 1: Take Risks - Book 2: Tales From the Open Road Book a 60 Minute Call with Joe Are you buying your first RV or have questions about RVing? We're (gladly) diving back into the Miffy-verse, talking cover songs and fortune cookies, and asking the question: How did Google search lose its luster??As expected, the @miffydances Instagram account is perfection. Cover songs—having a moment! Beyond the epic “Fast Car” moment with Tracy Chapman and Luke Combs, 50 Cent's "P.I.M.P.”, by Bacao Rhythm & Steel Band in Anatomy of a Fall, the Kelly Clarkson effect aka Kellyoke, Pedal Steel Noah, Boygenius doing “Cowboy Take Me Away,” Leon Bridges performing Bob Marley's “Redemption Song,” T Pain's On Top of the Covers album, the Like a Version YouTube show, and Norma Fraser doing Sheryl Crow's “First Cut is the Deepest.”The high five being 47 years old feels, stay with us, kind of like this tweet. Related: High Five by Adam Rubin and Daniel Salmieri is an excellent children's book by the duo who brought you Dragons Love Tacos.Fortune cookie–related things include Coming Soon's nickel-plated version, Chefanie's giant ones, and a recipe from Red House Spice. On the dismal state of internet searching, “The Tragedy of Google Search” by Charlie Warzel for The Atlantic. Other search engines out there: DuckDuckGo, Startpage, and Perplexity, seen in Laura Reilly's installment of the Why Is This Interesting? newsletter.Favorite covers, favorite fortunes? Dragons love tacos. They love chicken tacos, beef tacos, great big tacos, and teeny tiny tacos. So if you want to lure a bunch of dragons to your party, you should definitely serve tacos. Buckets and buckets of tacos. Unfortunately, where there are tacos, there is also salsa. And if a dragon accidentally eats spicy salsa . . . oh, boy. You're in red-hot trouble.

What happens when a designer decides to make picture books? What happens when she goes and gets creative with the illustrations? While remembered for many things, I'd say that this 1983 release is without a doubt the best known of creator Ann Jonas. You may remember it yourself. It's the picture book where you read it one way and then turn it upside down and read it the other. It feels like a dare, and comes off as the number one book Betsy had to produce when she worked as a children's librarian. Countless adults would come up to her saying, "There was this book when I was a kid and it was black and white . . ." They literally didn't have to say anything else after that. We have no doubt that this book blew little minds. It may not be the most plot forward of the picture books out there, but who the HECK cares? Show Notes: We mention a couple books in the course of this podcast. If you like this one, please check out Robo-Sauce by Adam Rubin, illustrated by Daniel Salmieri or the works of Bruno Munari. Doug Bauer has written a love story, "The Beckoning World". A man and a woman. A father and son. A love for a more innocent time. A lovely homage to America's midwest. And a love story about baseball. It's a simple book really—until it's not. Boy meets girl. Boy is a promising pitcher. Girl's father says, "You pick: my daughter or baseball." He picks the girl. But then the book veers back to baseball and the protagonist pitcher and his son are barnstorming across America with Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig. Sound implausible? Doug makes it seem perfectly reasonable. The Beckoning World is evocative of the early 20th century, conjures up small town baseball parks (you can almost smell the peanuts), and makes you feel like you know the Babe and Lou. Especially the Babe. And speaking of small towns, this week's bookstore is Fact and Fiction in Missoula, Montana. Give it all a listen. Today's interviews center on children's books with wildly different topics, but they both aim to make reading more accessible for kids. Nikole Hannah Jones, working with Renee Watson, turned the 1619 Project into a picture book called Born On The Water. They told NPR their goal was "to say to young people - to young Black Americans, you belong here." Next, Adam Rubin has on his collection of short stories that are all different but share the same title: The Ice Cream Machine. Rubin told NPR's Rachel Martin that there are so many ways to tell a story. This is an encore episode from March 2022.

Six stories, set in six distinct worlds.
Our interviews today are both children's books and even though they are about wildly different topics, they both aim to make reading more accessible for kids. Nikole Hannah Jones, with the help of Renee Watson, has turned the 1619 Project into a picture book called Born On The Water. They told NPR their goal was "to say to young people - to young Black Americans, you belong here." Next, Adam Rubin has written a collection of short stories that are all different but have the same title: The Ice Cream Machine. Rubin told NPR's Rachel Martin that there are so many ways to tell a story.

A difficult psychedelic experience once meant a hospital visit… or worse. Now, in the spirit of the Zendo Project and other psychedelic peer support organizations, we have a new hotline called the Fireside Project (call or text 62-FIRESIDE) and there's a lot that psychedelic therapists can learn from leaders like Hanifa Nayo Washington and Adam Rubin. On the show, we discuss the influence of ceremonial medicine and legacy psychedelic support organizations in informing Fireside. We talk about the value of community in mental health and how Fireside nurtures their own cohort of volunteers. We review the data from the first 18 days of operation and discuss potential legal issues. Finally as always, Hanifa and Adam share their advice to psychedelic therapists. Fireside Project Co-founder, Adam Rubin is a psychedelic harm reduction activist and crisis counselor. He has worked over 45 events around the world since 2015 with many different organizations including the Zendo Project, White Bird Rock Med, RGX Medical, and Take 3 Presents. He has given trainings to peer support volunteers, local psychedelic communities, and event medical teams. He has also written a series of zines titled “The It's Okay Psychedelic Harm Reduction Series” and distributes them for free. Hanifa Nayo Washington is Fireside Project's Cultivator Of Beloved Community. She is an award-winning cultural producer and the Principal Organizer & Co-Founding Practitioner of One Village Healing, a wellness and resilience initiative. Hanifa has been combining arts, healing, and activism to make the world a better place for 20+ years and in 2017 she released her 3rd album Mantras for the Revolution. In December 2018 Hanifa received a Phenomenal Women Arts Award from the Arts Council of Greater New Haven for her contributions and achievements in the arts. Nick and Ben discuss Adam Rubin's Dragons Love Tacos.
For 15 years, Adam Rubin was one of most well-recognized Major League beat reporters in the country, covering the Mets for the New York Daily News and ESPN. Despite amassing the largest social media following of any team-specific MLB reporter with ESPN, Rubin decided to leave the often laborious life of a beat reporter in 2017 to pursue a path in college athletics. Adam sits down to chat about his journey into journalism, his time with the Mets, and his new role with Stony Brook University. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app
