SF Giants cling to wild card edge—with tiebreakers on their side

The NL wild card race is living up to its name. The San Francisco Giants find themselves in the thick of a wild race to the finish, and despite getting rained out yesterday, the Giants had a great day. The D-backs, Reds, and Marlins all lost, which pushed the SF Giants into a virtual tie for the third and final wild card spot. However, the Giants' winning percentage is slightly higher than the teams they're "tied" with (AZ and CIN have played two more games and are 1-1 in them). The Giants also have important tiebreaker advantages. If they were to tie with the Reds, the Giants would win outright without playing a Game 163. The SF Giants only need to win one of their two remaining games against the D-backs to win that season series. The Giants and Marlins split their season series, and the next tiebreaker is intradivision record, which is also an advantage for the Giants. So their playoff odds are certainly on the rise and things would be looking good even in the event of an eventual tie. Giants chairman Greg Johnson made comments that he firmly stood behind Farhan Zaidi and Gabe Kapler. There had recently been some rumbling about discontent among ownership, particularly with Kapler, and that firings could be made if the team fails to reach the playoffs. But Johnson put that idea to rest, stating that both would be back in 2024. Luis Matos survived a roster crunch as Michael Conforto was activated. Matos has really been playing well, and so it was infielder Casey Schmitt who was optioned even though Conforto is an outfielder. Find and follow Locked On Giants on your favorite podcast platforms:

SF Giants' under-the-radar Wilmer Flores extension is paying huge dividends

Where would the 2023 San Francisco Giants be without Wilmer Flores? For the last six weeks, Flores has essentially been the SF Giants' offense. The Giants' decision to extend Wilmer Flores for three years, $16.5M is looking like a stroke of genius. Flores is having a career year in his fourth season with the Giants, so much so that he's essentially already been worth the entirety of the contract. The third year of the deal is actually a $3.5M player option, but if Flores declines it, it becomes an $8.5M team option. But the other moves the SF Giants made between the end of the 2022 season and the start of the 2023 season haven't worked out so well. Michael Conforto and Mitch Haniger simply haven't made the impact that was hoped or expected. Conforto has struggled to hit for any kind of impact power, and Haniger was ineffective before breaking his forearm and missing a bunch of time. Other signings like Ross Stripling and Sean Manaea also haven't been great so far. Luke Jackson and Taylor Rogers have mostly been good. AJ Pollock left last night's game with side discomfort. Marco Luciano was then promtly removed from the River Cats game. It is likely that Luciano joins the active roster, but it's not clear if he will get more regular playing time this time around. Another player to keep an eye on going forward is Wade Meckler, who's now hitting at the minors' highest level. Meckler looks like someone who will really contribute with the bat, which is what the Giants need desperately right now. Find and follow Locked On Giants on your favorite podcast platforms:

Marco Luciano debuts—and gets pinch hit for—in SF Giants' win vs. A's

San Francisco Giants top prospect Marco Luciano made his long anticipated MLB debut last night. Luciano received a standing ovation prior to his first at-bat, and again after he flew out to the right field wall on the first pitch he saw. Luciano also made a few nice plays at shortstop for the Giants. But after only two plate appearances, leading off the seventh inning with a two-run lead, SF Giants manager Gabe Kapler elected to pinch hit for Luciano. While the move may have been correct statistically, it took away from the entertainment value of the game, as so many Giants fans wanted to see Luciano. Kapler's decision earlier in the game to pinch hit for Michael Conforto with Austin Slater, however, was a good move. The difference is that at that point the game was tied and the go-ahead run was on second base with one out. Slater hit another pinch-hit homer, giving the Giants a lead they would make stand up. Slater is the best pinch hitter in baseball, but this move does highlight the disappointing overall season Conforto has had, and the fact that his poor performance against lefties means he will sometimes not hit against them. Most of the SF Giants' offseason signings have been significant disappointments. But all that matters is that the Giants beat the A's and swept this two-game series. The Giants' position as clear buyers had slipped following their ghastly six-game losing streak, but the SF Giants are in a much better position after two straight wins. They're only three games back in the NL West, and they are the top wild card team in the league. FanGraphs estimates the Giants' playoff odds to be roughly 65% with only four games remaining before Tuesday's trade deadline. Find and follow Locked On Giants on your favorite podcast platforms:

San Francisco Giants position players were top 10 in fWAR in the first half. The Giants scored more runs than the average team. They were better on the bases than the average team, despite being second-to-last in stolen bases. And importantly, the SF Giants were among the game's best defensive teams. Younger veterans like Thairo Estrada, LaMonte Wade Jr., J.D. Davis, and Mike Yastrzemski led the way, and the Giants mixed in some exciting young players like Patrick Bailey, Luis Matos, and Casey Schmitt. Many were very concerned about the Giants' defense coming into the year, and it simply hasn't been an issue. In fact, the Giants' defense has been a real strength. The Giants have been among the game's best defensive teams, with Estrada and Davis—two players many had questions about defensively—leading the way. Michael Conforto hasn't been great defensively, but he also hasn't killed the Giants out there in right field. The SF Giants certainly dealt with injuries in the first half, with Mitch Haniger out until September with a fractured forearm, and Estrada currently out 4-6 weeks with a broken hand. Conforto's been streaky at the plate, but other veterans like Wade and Davis have had very strong offensive performances. Bailey's emergence as the catcher of the present and the future was the best story of the first half for the Giants. He's been a clutch force at the plate and behind it. Matos has also been a bright spot, holding his own against MLB pitching despite being just 21 years old. Find and follow Locked On Giants on your favorite podcast platforms:

SF Giants lose Thairo Estrada—arguably their best player—to a broken left hand

The San Francisco Giants cannot catch a break. What they can catch, unfortunately, are broken bones. Thairo Estrada is the latest Giants player to go down with an injury, as he suffered a broken left hand after being hit by a pitch on Sunday against the Mets. The SF Giants already lost Mitch Haniger to a broken forearm, and they've dealt with numerous soft-tissue injuries to players like Mike Yastrzemski, Michael Conforto, LaMonte Wade Jr., Alex Cobb, and J.D. Davis. Thankfully, Yastrzemski was activated off the IL yesterday and Conforto returned to the lineup after missing a few games with a hamstring issue. It wasn't enough, however, to prevent another Giants loss. Logan Webb was really good over 6.2 innings, striking out 11 Mariners and allowing just two runs, but the San Francisco Giants were shut down offensively outside of Blake Sabol, who hit two impressive home runs. Sabol also cost the Giants a run with a passed ball and wild pitch that should have been blocked. The losses are piling up a bit for the Giants right now, as they've dropped six of their last eight games. They're now tied for the NL's final wild card spot, and their competition continues to win seemingly every night. Per FanGraphs, the Giants' playoff odds have fallen to about 63%, down from about 75% just a few days ago. The Giants need to get back on track and avoid spiraling into the All-Star break. All of these injuries have created opportunities for young players like Luis Matos and Casey Schmitt, but thus far those players haven't really produced. The San Francisco Giants got a huge boost when Casey Schmitt and Patrick Bailey were promoted to the majors and made an immediate impact. Is SF Giants outfield prospect Luis Matos next in line? Matos is tearing it up in Triple-A, but it's hard to see how he would find consistent playing time in the Giants' major league outfield considering the fact that the SF Giants have Michael Conforto, Mitch Haniger, Mike Yastrzemski, and Austin Slater locked into roles. Carson Whisenhunt and Reggie Crawford are also discussed in this segment. What has been the influence of new Giants GM Pete Putila? Is he behind the Minor League success and aggressive promotions that we didn't see for years under Farhan Zaidi and Scott Harris? Not necessarily. A lot of this has been a function of the fact that players the Giants believe in have performed well and earned promotions. A lot of those players simply weren't ready in previous years, but are more ready now. But Putila likely has had some significant impact on the process. Some San Francisco Giants rapid fire questions are also answered: Will Gabe Kapler ever get rid of the platoon system? If you had to buy a jersey, whose jersey would you get? Do the Giants have a legit first baseman of the future in the system? Have we seen enough from Brett Wisely? Assuming he stays healthy and continues to hit well, should the Giants consider re-signing Conforto? Who are the three likeliest Giants All-Stars on the roster? What's the expected record at the end of the year with the Giants' hot May? Do you envision the Giants being buyers or sellers in the deadline? SF Giants lose frustrating series vs. Pirates; why Game 2 was the "one that got away"

Just like the last time they lost a series—which was a while ago—the San Francisco Giants won the first game of the series but then dropped the remaining ones. Game 2 was "the one that got away" for the SF Giants, who had tons of baserunners, via both hits and especially walks, and they could only cash in one run. The Giants held the Pirates to just two runs, so all it would've taken was one big hit. Game 3 was always going to be tough with breakout star Mitch Keller on the mound for the Pirates. Giants outfielder Michael Conforto had an injury scare, which is exactly what the San Francisco Giants don't need as they already have key contributors on the injured list. Thankfully, Conforto's MRI came back clean and he is just day-to-day. Tomorrow is a well-timed off day in that case. Joc Pederson, Thairo Estrada, and Joey Bart are also out right now, but all seem relatively close to returning. Alex Wood pitched a clunker today for the SF Giants vs. a Pirates team he really must do better against. With Wood struggling in the rotation, Sean Manaea in the bullpen (but pitching well lately), and Ross Stripling on the IL, is it time to consider Minor League options such as Kyle Harrison and Keaton Winn? Those players and the likelihood of a callup are discussed. Find and follow Locked On Giants on your favorite podcast platforms:

The Giants were very much in danger of this trip turning into an utter disaster. While 1-4 is no one's idea of a good road trip through Detroit and Miami, the SF Giants were very close to being 0-5 after today looked like potentially another loss for the Giants, who improved to a still-miserable 6-11 with the win. Alex Cobb grinded his way through five innings, picking up eight strikeouts and featuring some really good stuff. The bullpen, much maligned so far this season, held the line after Cobb had allowed a single run. The Giants' offense, however, found itself in a familiar funk. They managed to score early (albeit only one run), but the did not manage to score often. The script flipped in the second extra frame. After going scoreless in the top of the 10th, and Camilo Doval holding down the Marlins in the bottom half, the Giants exploded for four runs in the top of the 11th thanks to two left-on-left homers by Michael Conforto and Mike Yastrzemski. The SF Giants need Conforto, Mitch Haniger, Joc Pederson, and Austin Slater back on the roster as soon as possible, as their absences have a ripple effect on the rest of the roster that means fewer favorable matchups than desiered, and recently it has showed. But just for today, the San Francisco Giants got a huge win and will return home on a happy flight across the country. Find and follow Locked On Giants on your favorite podcast platforms:

It’s the teams that don’t get much time in the limelight that Nantz works overtime for. He wants to tell their stories the right way. It makes this year’s Final Four a fitting time to go out. It was filled with teams nobody expected. A storyteller’s paradise, Nantz called it. The first lady, during a visit to the Colorado state capital in Denver, praised Iowa's sportsmanship and congratulated both teams on their performance. There has been talk of expansion over the last few years, but nothing has come to fruition yet. Taking their talents overseas is also not given with those jobs also at premium. Locked On Giants – Daily Podcast On The San Francisco Giants

The San Francisco Giants had an unforgettable offseason in the worst kind of way, with high profile misses on Aaron Judge and Carlos Correa. The Giants, of course, had agreed to terms with Correa on a 13-year deal before it all fell apart over medical concerns following his physical. Despite this seemingly like the definite time to do so, the Giants did not sign a superstar over the offseason. They did, however, make several solid moves. Mitch Haniger and Michael Conforto join the outfield rotation and address a couple of issues simultaneously. They push lesser defenders like Joc Pederson out of the outfield mix, and they also infuse some offense into a lineup that was quietly above average at scoring runs last year. The SF Giants didn't really have any major subtractions on the position player side (Brandon Belt and Evan Longoria found new teams, but neither contributed much in 2022), so Haniger and Conforto are straight up additions, not replacements. The Giants' issue in 2022 was run prevention, specifically caused by bad defense and an unreliable bullpen. Carlos Rodón joined Kevin Gausman in departing after an elite season, and the Giants replaced him with Ross Stripling and Sean Manaea. They're also getting Anthony DeSclafani back after he missed almost all of 2022 with an ankle injury. In the bullpen, the Giants' starting pitching depth bleeds over, and they also signed Taylor Rogers and Luke Jackson. Overall, the Giants look like a team that is on the fringe of the playoff picture, projected to have a win total somewhere around the mid-80s. Is Logan Webb the only San Francisco Giants player who's one of the Top 100 players in MLB? According to MLB Network, yes. But these kinds of rankings should be taken with a grain of salt, since player evaluations can fluctuate wildly year to year. Coming off their 107-win season in 2021, the Giants would've had several more names appear in such a list. Even this year, guys like Michael Conforto and Mitch Haniger could easily belong on such a list but it'd be hard to justify putting them in coming off so much missed time due to injuries. Alex Cobb, Thairo Estrada, and Camilo Doval also have cases to be on this list but were snubbed. Could the SF Giants pursue Manny Machado as a shortstop next offseason? Brandon Crawford is entering the last year of his contract, and the Giants need a star. Machado obviously fits the Giants, but would they offer him the chance to play short? Probably not, since he's graded out as a below-average defender there in his career, but it's an interesting thought. And what about Shohei Ohtani? The Giants might be hesitant to give a huge contract to someone who's primarily a pitcher (in terms of his value), but could they view him as an outfielder if his arm ever has a problem in the midst of a 10-plus-year deal? Probably so. What are some realistic floors and ceilings for the new guys on the team? Conforto, Haniger, Sean Manaea, Ross Stripling, and Taylor Rogers' outlooks are analyzed at length. And lastly, which San Francisco Giants hitter has the most aesthetically pleasing swing? It's pretty clearly one of the new guys... Some say the San Francisco Giants' tendency to give out short-term deals and deals with opt outs puts the team in a lose-lose situation. But that seems to miss the fact that, if the player has a good enough season to opt out, it means the SF Giants got good production for a year without having to take on the risk of a long-term commitment. There are certainly downsides to this approach, but it's clearly not a lose-lose. With that being said, how are the Giants looking next offseason? Who are their pure free agents, who has opt outs, and who's guaranteed to be back? Joc Pederson, Brandon Crawford, Alex Wood, Jakob Junis, John Brebbia, and Scott Alexander are the SF Giants' pure free agents. Michael Conforto, Ross Stripling, and Sean Manea can opt out of one more season with the Giants. And the SF Giants hold a $10 million club option with a $2 million buyout on Alex Cobb. The Giants are likely to be in need of a shortstop next offseason. Brandon Crawford is entering the last year of his deal, and the free agent market is pretty bleak. That's why it stings that the team didn't ultimately come away with one of the many star shortstops who were available the last two winters. The Giants will also likely be looking for an outfielder, and don't rule out a reunion with Conforto. The Giants seem hesitant to give long-term deals to pitchers, but they appear more willing to give multi-year deals position players. SF Giants' offseason has been emotionally brutal—but objectively productive

Two things can be true at the same time. The San Francisco Giants' offseason has been absolutely brutal—from an emotional perspective. At the same time, the Giants have made several solid moves that add up to a reasonably productive offseason to date. The one thing they haven't landed yet is star talent, after Carlos Correa's 13-year megadeal fell through last week over legitimate medical concerns related to his right ankle. The SF Giants started things off by bringing back Joc Pederson on a one-year, $19.7 million qualifying offer. Pederson was the Giants' most dangerous bat in 2022, and bringing him back is certainly better than letting him walk. He was a problem on defense last year, however, which is why the San Francisco Giants' signings of Mitch Haniger and Michael Conforto are so notable. The Giants didn't have any outfielders depart in free agency, so Haniger and Conforto simply push some of last year's outfield contributors out of a lot of playing time. The two additions figure to be near-everyday players for the Giants in 2022, and they allow Pederson to shift to near-full-time DH duties against right-handed pitching. On the pitching side, the Giants once again let an ace walk. Carlos Rodón was dominant for the Giants in 2022, but now he plays for another team. The SF Giants instead signed Sean Manaea and Ross Stripling to identical two-year, $25 million deals with opt outs after the first year. The Giants' rotation doesn't figure to have as much upside, but it is deeper. It's a solid collection of arms that could once again make the rotation a strength. Kyle Harrison figures to factor into the MLB team next year as well, and he could provide that upside. The Giants also signed Tyler Rogers' twin brother, Taylor Rogers, to a three-year, $33 million deal. There's still work to do, but so far the Giants should have a passing grade this offseason. It's not their fault Correa's physical turned up something unexpected, and that only happened a week ago. They deserve more time to pivot to alternative options. Correa himself is still unsigned and could possibly end up back with the Giants on a restructured deal. Find and follow Locked On Giants on your favorite podcast platforms:
