We welcomed Abi (aka Whitetail Abigail), creator and host of The Grit podcast, to our little corner of North Wales. We sourced some wild food, cooked over a fire and recorded this podcast episode.Abi is passionate about hunting and having more control over where her food has come from - and even more passionate about promoting women in wild food and fieldsports, giving a voice to what she sees as under-represented groups in this world. As we sat in the woods (accompanied by the sounds of rural life and Abi's dog wandering around) Richard and Abi discussed some of the lesser-acknowledged social and political aspects of sourcing wild food in the UK. We talk in detail about starting a podcast, generational differences between Boomers, Gen X, Millenials and Gen Z, the surprising statistics of firearm ownership in the UK, Abi's experiences getting started in hunting, the perceptions of hunting as a townie, whether the North American conservation/hunting model could work over here, and the visibility of women in shooting. We had a great time introducing Abi, Vic and Buck to Bilberries and taking Abi out to find some wild protein later on before cooking it all up and getting into some deep conversations.Links- Wild Food People on Instagram, Twitter, Facebook - @wildfoodpeople- Support the Wild Food People podcast on Patreon - https://www.patreon.com/wildfoodpeople- About Wild Food People - https://wildfoodpeople.co.uk/about/- Attend a course with Wild Food People - https://wildfoodpeople.co.uk/courses- Get in touch with us - https://wildfoodpeople.co.uk/contact-us/- Richard on Instagram and Twitter - @richprideaux- Amy on Instagram and Twitter - @agreenoutdoors-Abi on Instagram - @whitetailabigail-The Grit podcast - https://www.thegritpodcast.co.uk/
We recorded this episode live at the game fair where Richard Prideaux invited the crowds, celebrities and vendors to be our guest for a few minutes. We talked with dozens of people about wild food, the relevance of the Game Fair to conservation and land management and to try and put into words exactly what it is that they love so much about this celebration of the British countryside. The selection of interviews which you will hear includes words from a gamekeeper, cooking teacher, clothing brand, hedge layer, photographer, website designer amongst others, each as passionate as the last. We went expecting a variety of answers, but what we came away with was an unprompted consensus about the importance of wild sourced food and community. We had a fantastic time creating this mammoth episode, it has been an undertaking but hopefully this finished product paints a picture of what the Game Fair is all about. If you would like to find out more about any of the interviewees, we have included links below in the order that they spoke.Links- Wild Food People on Instagram, Twitter, Facebook - @wildfoodpeople- Support the Wild Food People podcast on Patreon - https://www.patreon.com/wildfoodpeople- About Wild Food People - https://wildfoodpeople.co.uk/about/- Attend a course with Wild Food People - https://wildfoodpeople.co.uk/courses- Get in touch with us - https://wildfoodpeople.co.uk/contact-us/- Richard on Instagram and Twitter - @richprideaux- Amy on Instagram and Twitter - @agreenoutdoors-Louisa Clutterbuck - Eat Wild - https://www.eatwild.co/-Mark Taylor - Three Valleys and Llanforda shoots - https://www.llanforda.co.uk/-Tom - Thomas Jacks - https://thomasjacks.co.uk/-Richard Negus - https://www.richardnegus.co.uk/-Becka – Hayles Fruit Farm - https://www.haylesfruitfarm.co.uk/-Oliver Massy-Birch – Fortis Clothing - https://fortisclothing.co.uk/-Andy Tarrant – Tarrant Refrigeration / Game Larder - https://gamelarder.com/-Geoff Garrod - https://www.geoffgarrod.co.uk/-Jonathan – Cheshire Gun Room - https://www.cheshiregunroom.com/-Sam Hargreaves – Tweedl - https://tweedl.com/-Joe Mann – Queen's College Taunton - https://www.queenscollege.org.uk/-Nicole Moore - https://www.shootinggirlwithanafro.com/-Phil Bowes-Josh – Brandecosse - https://www.brandecosse.com/-Toby Christie – Gordon Castle Estate - https://www.gordoncastle.co.uk/-Dave – Founder of Tackling Minds - https://www.tacklingminds.org/-Callum McInerney-Riley - http://www.primecreative.io/-The Game Fair Website - https://thegamefair.org/

In this episode of the podcast I was delighted to welcome on Lorcan Daly, a PhD Candidate from the Technological University of the Shannon. Lorcan focus has been around markers of fatigue in field sport athletes as well as recovery protocols in GAA. In this episode we dive deep into the effects of training vs games on the body, how long does it take to recover after a game, what factors affect this, what are effective recovery strategies for GAA players & how in season training should structured. Lorcan has a wealth of knowledge around managing load in field sports athletes and showed it all here. This podcast is packed with nuggets of information!
Ian Coghill has written the book that the RSPB, the National Trust, Natural England and Wild Justice ought to read. But they won't. He explains why moorland is so important to the UK, how gamekeepers have got it right when it comes to moorland management, and how the ‘conservation industry' (the organisations just mentioned) have got it so, so wrong. To buy Ian's book, visit Fieldsports.shop/product/moorland-matters-by-ian-coghill/
Jose Souto is possibly one of the most game focussed chefs in the UK. Born in London to Spanish parents, Jose embraces his Spanish cultural tradition, his English love of Fieldsports, his talent for cooking, and his vocation for imparting knowledge to others to really make an impact on the way we can all learn to access, harvest and cook game meat. If thats not enough, Jose has a passion for Birds of Prey and Falconry. It was a pleasure to spend a little over an hour chatting and learning more about this remarkable man.
We are joined by Charles Smith-Jones, an all round countryside man who specialised in wildlife management after completing a full military career in the Royal Welsh Fusiliers. Charles is the author of four countryside pursuit books which I recommend to all our listeners. They are packed with useful information and accompanied by a large library of photographs. Well worth having one, or more, on your coffee table!
In which we talk about The future of Fieldsports, Eye Dominance, Coaching, and Eddie blows a goose.
In episode 66 of The Country Gent Podcast, our guest is Simon Grace who tells us all about what he's doing to defend fieldsports to ensure that it has a future. You can find the whisky we tasted here. The post Defending Fieldsports with Simon Grace appeared first on The Yorkshire Gent.
A slight change in podcast style this episode as David and Aaron thought it would be a good idea to hijack the Fieldsports radio station and call Cia ap Bryn. you may know Cai as our star in the hunt & cook series. However did you know he works in the nuclear industry? Has discovered a taste for testicles thanks to his mate trigger, and he was born not only in the same village but in the same building as our very own David Wright! As you will hear Cai is passionate about hunting and cooking. Reconnecting people with the idea of hunting delicious, sustainable wild meat and cooking it over an open flame is something that we humans have been mastering and enjoying for millennia. To find out more about Cai and his company Game and Flames then goto: gameandflames.com
In episode 64 of The Country Gent Podcast, our guest is the one and only Tim Maddams. Links: Tim's fieldsports website. Filey Bay STR Finish. Whisky Gift Ideas. The post Tim Maddams on Cooking Game and Fieldsports appeared first on The Yorkshire Gent.
Jim and Nick toss a coin to decide which side of the debate to argue. Jim ends up defending the rising costs of all things associated with game pursuits whereas Nick gets to argue that it's all getting far too expensive. What do you think?
Marcus, has been blessed to work within the industry he loves. He is a fly fishing addict, and has participated in all aspects of fieldsports from an early age. His career to date has seen him manage a Coenraad Vermaak Safari camp direct from school, then move through a career of journalism where he was editor of the Fieldsports Magazine, before moving to business where he is now the Brand Director for Schöffel Country, whilst keeping a hand in journalism as a freelancer.
This months Newsround with the two grumpy old gits isn't too grumpy! We have some refreshingly optimistic stories from the game pursuits world and also make an announcement of a beautiful large solid Irish oak chopping board giveaway.
This months instalment of two grumpy old men trying to keep cheerful whilst searching out some controversial news stories related to the wide and varied pursuits of wild game. Don't take it too seriously!
Ross Ewing joins me from the British Association for Shooting and Conservation to discuss the current support available for the shooting industry in the UK during the COVID-19 pandemic, and how the Scottish Government have excluded all support for businesses involved in shooting and fishing. Something a little different this week. Jim and Nick sit down to review a few of the stories of the great outdoors that made headlines during the month of January. They aren't necessarily specifically fieldsports but all have a link somewhere along the way to our passion for game.
A good taxidermist needs to have not just artistic flair and well-honed skills in the mechanics of conducting the preservation but, possibly more importantly, a detailed understanding of the nature of the animal. How it lives, moves, acts. The best taxidermists have a passion for wildlife and all that it provides. Ingrid is definitely in that category. However, not only is she running a business from her passion but she is also actively involved in Taxidermy organisations such as the Taxidermy Association of Ireland where she is the secretary for Northern Ireland. For you Game of Thrones fans, Ingrid was a regular advisor and provider of all things ‘skin’ over the years it was filmed to ensure authenticity throughout.
To those of you in the shooting world Charlie won’t need any introduction. We were very fortunate for him to give up some time one Sunday afternoon whilst he was travelling to have a chat about Charlie himself. As you would expect he was far more generous than that and the conversation was broad. It was a pleasure to chat and hear his views on shooting, fishing and hunting in the UK today as well as about the man himself. Fieldsports Channel TV is certainly leading the way for online broadcast of Fieldsports activities in the UK. Not scared to tackle the tough subjects or people, the channel delivers engaging weekly videos with up to data news and views. If you haven’t watched it then make sure you subscribe to their YouTube channel sharpish!

Then we head over to the GWCT Game Fair for a case study discussion on community land use and access to resources such as hunting and fishing. A some what contentious issue with the current climate in Scotland, it is an informative debate, with podcast host Byron Pace on the panel adding his take. We ran out of time to discuss international models of public land use, but will return to this in the future. Large room many mics, lots of people and background noise, so although clear, the panel discussion audio isn't our usual standard.
