Wales' new Cabinet Secretary for Climate Change and Rural Affairs says his first job it to listen to farmers. It comes after unrest and large protests in Wales by farmers, angry about the Welsh Government's approach to farming. In particular, the way its tacking TB in cattle, stricter rules on pollution and the Sustainable Farming Scheme, which will replace EU subsides in Wales and requires farmers to plant trees on 10% of their land. We put their concerns to Huw Irranca-Davies.The UK Government has admitted that it unlawfully issued some licences for releasing game birds last year. The campaign group Wild Justice challenged the licences granted in the Deben Estuary in Suffolk and Breckland in Norfolk. While DEFRA concedes that it didn't follow Natural England's advice and that the assessment it carried out wasn't in line with the rules – it strongly refutes Wild Justice's claim that the decisions 'were tainted with the appearance of bias'.And we visit a farm in Herefordshire where they rear tens of thousands of worms to sell for live bird feed, for improving the soil, and for composting.Presented by Charlotte Smith Produced for BBC Audio in Bristol by Heather Simons

The Government has admitted that it unlawfully issued some licences for releasing game birds last year. The campaign group Wild Justice challenged the licences granted in the Deben Estuary in Suffolk and Breckland in Norfolk, saying that ministers had ignored the advice from the wildlife regulator Natural England, and that a proper assessment of the impact hadn't been carried out. By law under the Habitats Directive there must be an assessment of the impact of any release near Special Protected Areas, and advice from Natural England must be taken into account for a licence to be granted. While Defra concedes that it didn't follow Natural England's advice and that the assessment it carried out wasn't in line with the rules, it strongly refutes Wild Justice's claim that the decisions 'were tainted with the appearance of bias'.A new assessment of the UK vegetable oil harvest has been made and found that oilseed rape production this year could be reduced by as much as 38% compared to last year, partly due to less area planted but also because of the wet weather. Added to that, production of olives in Southern Europe is also facing climate challenges, and the price of olive oil has shot up.Some farmers coping with challenging weather will be thankful if they have income from a diversification on the farm. All week we're hearing how farms are running extra businesses alongside their core work. Tens of thousands of worms might not be the first thing you'd think of to help a traditional farm survive. But near Hereford, the Gorringe family have set up a sideline which is helping prop up their arable and beef business. Presented by Anna Hill and produced by Beatrice Fenton.

Dr Ruth Tingay is a conservationist and campaigner who has spent her career primarily focused upon the world's raptor population (that's Birds of Prey, rather than Veloci-...) Her career was inadvertently kickstarted through working at Heathrow airport's Animal Reception Centre. Here she welcomed back the UK's Red Kite population for their reintroduction to our country, as well as the usual pampered felines, escaped pooches, and boxes stuffed full of mystery birds. Throw Nile Crocodiles, an annual Mexican Hawk Migration of 4.6 million birds and the DNA of Golden Eagles into the mix, and you get an incredibly varied career that has leapfrogged the globe from Mauritius to Mexico then on to Madagascar and many other countries beginning with ‘M' besides. But since 2009, Ruth has been focused upon the plights of our domestic birds; shedding light upon wildlife crime through her Raptor Persecution blog, and through joining with Mark Avery and Chris Packham to spearhead their Wild Justice which is holding the Governments of Britain to account for ongoing enviro-failings and eco-crimes. Farmers in Northern Ireland have been left wondering what's next after a proposal to cull badgers to prevent the spread of bovine TB was quashed by a court last month, which found the consultation behind the cull was flawed. At the time, the Ulster Farmers' Union described the decision as "a major blow for livestock farmers"...saying it could now "take years before the issue of the TB reservoir in wildlife is addressed." The Northern Ireland Badger Group - which brought the legal challenge alongside Wild Justice - said "a farmer-led cull would inflict immense suffering on great numbers of healthy badgers." Farmers in England are being warned that even if they take up multiple options to 'stack' Government payments for environmental work under the new post-Brexit support scheme, they will not receive the same amount of funding they used to get, under the EU's Basic Payments Scheme. That's according to new research by the Agriculture and Horticulture Development Board, which found taking up multiple payments can bring stability to farm incomes, but that farmers have to judge how much it might cost them to take up the work, before committing to it. And brassica crops like cabbages or cauliflowers face many challenges in the field. Pests, diseases and the weather can all reduce yields and affect their quality, which can cause farmers to lose income. We hear from scientists at the University of Warwick, who have been working to develop new varieties which can be more resistant to difficult weather conditions, disease and pests. The shooting organisation BASC says itis taking legal action against the government over gamebird licences in England. Following a legal challenge by campaigners Wild Justice, since 2021 the release of birds like pheasants has been licensed by Natural England. Because of concerns about avian flu, this year the licence doesn't cover protected areas. Anyone wanting to release red legged partridge or pheasants within 500 m of a Special Protection Area, which protects rare, vulnerable and migratory birds, must get permission from Natural England. BASC says there has been no consultation on the change and it was announced too late to give shoots time to adapt. We start our theme for this week: agricultural estates. They are complicated businesses, with farming often at the heart but diversifications from holiday homes to shoots and micro-breweries helping to pay the bills. This week we're going to take a tour round the Holkham Estate in North Norfolk, owned by the Earl of Leicester. The estate covers 3500 hectares, growing salad potatoes, malting barley for beer, wheat and sugar beet, and maize for a biodigester. It includes forestry, a national nature reserve on the coast, grazes 900 beef cattle and 600 breeding ewes. It's also a tourist attraction. And a Leicestershire beekeeper says he has noticed a forty percent increase in honey production from hives near a solar farm. Presented by Charlotte Smith and produced by Beatrice Fenton.

Releases of millions of game birds in Wales could be subject to licensing laws. Natural Resources Wales is advising the Welsh Government to launch a consultation about general licensing for all releases and special licences in sensitive areas. The British Association for Shooting and Conservation has called the move ' a systematic attack' against game shooting. The campaign group Wild Justice has welcomed the move. The DEFRA Secretary has said fresh tests are being done to look for pathogens that could be affecting crustaceans off England's North East coast. Tens of thousands of crabs and lobsters were washed up dead on beaches there in the summer of 2021, and catches have been down since. Fishermen have blamed old industrial chemicals released by dredging, but a DEFRA inquiry found the deaths were 'most likely' down to a new disease or parasite. Last week we heard calls from local fishermen for the Government to open a new inquiry, after prawn catches started being affected too. The Efra committee's been told the government's now commissioning further tests. All week we're looking at new ways of managing farm waste. Some water companies are using micro algae to eat contaminants like phosphorus and clean up waste water before it's discharged. That same technology is now being tested on livestock slurry. We hear from a pig farmer who's trialling the system on her farm to better use pig muck as fertiliser. Presenter = Anna Hill Producer = Rebecca Rooney

On this episode, Dennis speaks with Best Selling Author, National Speaker and Thin Green Line Warrior, John Nores. John, a California native, grew up in a small town in rural Santa Clara County. The eldest of four, he and his brothers and sister (the wolf pack as their mom coined them) developed a love for nature and the outdoors at an early age. He initially began college with the goal of becoming a civil engineer but during winter break of his first semester, he fortuitously met a fish and game warden in the back country of Henry Coe State Park on a back-packing trip and was instantly inspired to become one himself.  Inspiration led to a certainty of purpose and as soon as he got back to school, he changed his major to Criminal Justice and began pursuing a career as a fish and game warden for the state of California. John has a Master of Science degree from San Jose State University in Criminal Justice Administration (1998), a Bachelor of Science Degree (1990) from San Jose State University in that same discipline and was inducted into SJSU's Justice Studies Alumni Hall of Fame in November 2018.Hard work and diligence led John to a diverse career he held for three decades. Beginning in 1992, he was hired as a warden for the California Department of Fish and Wildlife and retired in December of 2018 as a special operations lieutenant working directly at the state level, co-developing and leading his agency's elite tactical unit the Marijuana Enforcement Team (MET) and developed the CDFW's first sniper unit aimed at combatting the most environmentally damaging criminals working within California and impacting the nation.  The MET has been featured on Fox News, NBC Investigative Reports, CNN, Dan Rather Reports and highlighted on the Outdoor Channel's award-winning Patriot Profiles: Life of Duty documentary series.John's induction into the San Jose State Justice Studies Hall of FameThroughout his years of service he was a field training officer for new cadets,  conducted statewide, national and international training in firearms, defensive tactics, high risk warrant and arrest tactics as well as basic and advanced sniper training programs with special operations personnel from the Santa Clara County Sheriff's Office.  John was awarded the Governor's Medal of Valor for lifesaving and leadership efforts in 2007 and led allied agency dignitary protection details with the US Secret Service during the Obama administration. Today, Dennis and John discuss his time on the show "Wild Justice" on NAT Geo where California Game Wardens -- 240 in all -- patrol the state's 159,000 square miles, pursuing poachers, polluters and drug runners around the clock while making sure hunters and anglers follow the rules. In the second half of David's interview with Chris Packham, we hear how Chris originally wished to pursue a career as a wildlife cameraman, but a twist of fate thrust him into the arms of the Really Wild Show (or perhaps it was Chris who twisted their arms to let him in!) And from there, his TV career exploded! Chris clarifies exactly how his co-star, Terry Nutkins, lost his fingers, and how Chris himself was partially eaten by a vulture – you know, all the important stuff – and you'll learn how modern BBC natural history programming truly owes a massive debt of gratitude to the Aston Martin DB6!Nowadays, Chris is regarded as much for his environmental campaigning as for his TV presenting. As well as co-founding Wild Justice (an organisation campaigning for better and stronger laws and policies for nature), he has taken the Government to court over HS2, and is currently mounting plans for a march through London, a second “Walk for Widlife”, on behalf of our nation's depleting biodiversity. But he is also now taking some time out for himself. Chris explains his love of art, his true creative drive, how he has spent a life walking through sand and snow accompanied by Rothko and Rimbaud, and how he has plans now to spend the next few months making Brutalist sculpture. Far from art being at odds to the natural sciences, Chris sees science as “…the art of understanding truth and beauty.” Why not become a "Subscription Squirrel" on our Patreon, and help support the production of this podcast? The shooting industry is under pressure - according to BASC, the British Association for Shooting and Conservation. Rare, endangered animals are under attack from rich, powerful people who operate above the law. But this isn't a story about illegal poaching in Africa, nor animals being hunted for Chinese medicines. This is happening in the UK. Arthur Snell talks to environmental activist Mark Avery, former RSPB conservation director, co-founder of Wild Justice, and author of Inglorious, about grouse shooting, who really owns our moorland, and ending the persecution of raptors. “These grouse moors are wildlife crime hotspots.”  “Grouse shooting is seen as a posh, sexy sport. But it's only a sport if the grouses have guns too.” “So many birds are being poisoned, shot, or disappeared on grouse moors that it's impossible to ignore anymore.” “If you ever see someone killing a bird of prey, know that that is illegal.”  https://www.patreon.com/bunkercast Presented by Arthur Snell. Many Christians may not admit it but they probably have entertained the dark fantasy of avenging a loved one in a roaring rampage of revenge. Did the hit movie Taken, with its perfectly delivered and iconic dialogue, create this fantasy? Or did it merely tap into an unspoken desire? Does Liam Neeson's deep-voiced threat sound cool because we all have a deep-down desire for vigilante justice? Rarely do these movies wrestle with questions of ethics. Francis Bacon calls revenge “wild justice.” These films create a scenario where the hero's quest feels just. The wrongs they revenge are so potent that we desire justice, and we want it to be ‘wild.' It is worth thinking about the degree to which our pleasure in seeing the victim carry out vengeance is a departure from a biblical view of justice. This Postmodern Realities episode is a conversation with Journal author Philip Tallon about his online-exclusive article, “Wild Justice: Why Do We Love Revenge Movies?”https://www.equip.org/article/wild-justice-why-do-we-love-revenge-movies/Please note this article will be fully accessible by the public in the future, to get early access to read it now, please see our FAQ section on Early Access to Online-Exclusive Articles by clicking here. DEFRA has completed its review of ‘general licenses’ for shooting wild birds, after the campaign group Wild Justice made a legal challenge against them. Details of new licenses have been released which will allow people to kill wild birds for conservation, to protect public health and safety and to prevent damage to crops and livestock. Satellite technology is being used to identify farms which are allowing soil to wash off fields and into waterways. We join the Environment Agency out on SOIL PATROL in Herefordshire around the River Wye catchment. “The biggest change since farmers switched from horses to tractors” - that’s the scale of shake up required by Scotland’s agriculture sector for it to come into line with the government's targets on greenhouse gas emissions, according to a new report. The 'Farming for 1.5 degrees' inquiry sought to find a consensus with a panel made up of farmers, environmentalists and scientists. And all this week we’re taking time to listen to the thoughts of young people involved in food and farming. 15 year old Jessica Walker is the Soil Association’s Young Ambassador - her family run an organic beef and sheep farm. With more schools bringing in meat-free days, Jessica is questioning whether her peers really understand the arguments around the environmental impact of how food in the UK is produced. Game shooting has been under increasing scrutiny recently, with the RSPB coming out in favour of regulation. Now, the Government has announced that from next year, it will be introducing a system of licensing for the release of pheasants and red-legged partridges. It follows campaigning by Wild Justice, which claims the release of nearly 60 million non-native game birds each year in the UK is damaging the environment. Caz Graham hears from both sides of the debate. It's 15 years since the Hunting Act came into force, banning hunting with dogs. Since then there have been over 500 convictions under the Act, but the Countryside Alliance says fewer than 30 of the offenders were involved with registered hunts. It says most convictions under the Act have been for illegal poaching. We hear from hunts and saboteurs. The UK's fruit and veg growers are dependent on around 70 thousand seasonal workers to harvest their crops. They're mostly migrants, but this summer, with concerns that COVID and Brexit would mean fewer coming, the Government launched it's Pick for Britain campaign to encourage furloughed workers to get jobs on farms. Despite that, figures from the NFU show just 11% of pickers this year were UK residents. So why so few? We hear from one British fruit picker who was fired after failing to meet her daily targets, and speak to the NFU about what this all means for next year's season. And it's been a bad year for selling pumpkins...but even more so for selling GIANT pumpkins! We hear from one Lancashire farmer who's been unable to shift his enormous gourds. About the book: In 2009, Marc Bekoff was asked to write on animal emotions for Psychology Today. Some 500 popular, jargon-free essays later, the field of anthrozoology — the study of human-animal relationships — has grown exponentially, as have scientific data showing how smart and emotional nonhuman animals are. Here Bekoff offers selected essays that showcase the fascinating cognitive abilities of other animals as well as their empathy, compassion, grief, humor, joy, and love. Humpback whales protect gray whales from orca attacks, combat dogs and other animals suffer from PTSD, and chickens, rats, and mice display empathy. This collection is both an updated sequel to Bekoff’s popular book The Emotional Lives of Animals and a call to begin the important work of “rewilding” ourselves and changing the way we treat other animals.   About the author: Marc Bekoff is professor emeritus of ecology and evolutionary biology at the University of Colorado, Boulder. SUSAN JACOBY – "THE AGE OF AMERICAN UNREASON" American 15-year-olds rank 24th out of 29 countries in mathematical literacy. Americans are as likely to believe in flying saucers as in evolution. Depending on how the questions are asked, roughly 30-40 % of Americans believe in each. A 34-nation study found Americans less likely to believe in evolution than citizens of any of the countries polled except Turkey, and President George Bush says “the jury is still out.” in the summer of 2005 nearly two-thirds of Americans told pollsters that they believed creationism should be taught in schools alongside Darwinian evolution. Steve Colbert interviewed Georgia Rep. Lynn Westmoreland on "The Colbert Report." Westmoreland co-sponsored a bill that would require the display of the Ten Commandments in both the House of Representatives and the Senate, but, when asked, couldn't actually list the commandments. This stuff would be funny if it weren’t so tragic or dangerous. According to the Program on International Policy Attitudes, University of Maryland, among Bush supporters in the 2004 election, nearly 70% believed the U.S. had "clear evidence" that Saddam Hussein was working closely with Al Qaeda, a third believed weapons of mass destruction were found in Iraq, and more than a third that a substantial majority of world opinion supported the U.S.-led invasion. We can assume they were similarly uninformed about who benefits from Bush tax cuts, and the success or meaning of No Child Left Behind, Clear Skies, Healthy Forests, the Medicare prescription benefit, etc.? I believe there has been a concerted effort on the part of political and cultural advocates to encourage misinformation and the ignoring of evidence. In addition, their labeling of “intelligent” and “informed” as “elite” and “effete” implies that ignorance is somehow both valuable and under attack. I also believe that to ignore evidence – scientific as well as simply factual -- is primitive, pathological, suicidal, and an unfit way to run the world.
